  • The Great North Run this weekend will draw 60 thousand runners to the streets of Tyneside and a TV audience of millions. But there's another international sporting fixture in Newcastle tonight that's proving much more controversial.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    Saudi Arabia is playing Costa Rica in the first of two international football friendlies at St James's Park, the home of Newcastle United. And the choice of venue has angered some of the team's fans.

      Saudi money is as dirty as any money, also a huge portion of Saudi wealth is the result of oil sales to the West. The difference though is regardless of them being evil billionaire parasites, people like John Henry or Mike Ashley don’t personally order hundreds of migrants shot on their border, air strikes on Yemeni school kids, executions of dissidents etc. although they do profit from similar things. I agree though there are many hypocrisies and contradictions in the reporting of these issues and I’d like scrutiny on wealth in football in general

    As a Saudi woman saying that ‏They do not care about women’s rights or human rights. They only have their personal interests
    ‏if she was right that her sister was imprisoned because of her defense of women’s rights ‏all Saudi women would be in prison!🙂
    But by her own admission, her sister was working as a spy for the embassies of countries that’s why she was imprisoned for 3 years, and I think it is too short. If she had been in another country, she would have stayed forever because it is an international security issue

    This concept of sportswashing is COMPLETELY wrong and idiotic. We are literally watching a video, and commenting on the human rights abuses RIGHT NOW. The fact they invested in Newcastle has meant that you've reported on their human rights abuses 10 fold. If they're trying to hide their abuses or "wash" it's having the complete opposite effect. It's obvious that sportswashing isnt a thing in this instance.

  • @harryjackson9384
    @harryjackson9384 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    For me personally it's sportswashing by the Saudi's. Having a Saudi team playing at Newcastle's ground is taking a step too far. The other thing I am concerned about is that the human right's problem's in Saudi Arabia is an issue. Me personally I didn't want this take over as a fellow football fan. If it's not club related fixture it should not be played at St James's park end of story. The other point is that they have I would say on the Newcastle United away strip by having it green and white the same colour's of the Saudi flag.

Iran/Qatar/Syria/Saudi/ are both as bad each other with human rights. Sometimes I can't chose who is worse then the other. Thing's like going to a bar before the game it's not allowed in places like Qatar and other places. If someone robs over in those

Also interesting that their spokesperson refused to answer pertinent questions from Vloggers who report on NUFC every week. They clearly weren't happy about answering questions which did not fit their biased narrative. There was a good mix of cultures at both games. Everyone intermingled, the atmosphere was great and the football was entertaining. A pity there was not more people there to enjoy it. Bring on the next visit and open another section of the ground for more spectators to enjoy the occasion.
