  • The waterfall visualization in Power BI is explained through an example. By examining a specific time period, you can determine whether your sales or profit are rising or falling. This allows you to identify the most influential products driving these changes in sales or profit.
This chart has Category, Breakdown, and Y-Axis sections. The output will be in the form of bar charts. In this example, I will tell you about the five most important countries that impacted sales from 2005 to 2006. In a Waterfall chart, the default maximum breakdown is five, but you can increase or decrease this number. Now, consider that I keep the breakdown at five. There is a column section in which green represents an increase, so it will show the top five influential factors that increased sales in green. Red represents a decrease, so it will show the top five influential factors that decreased sales in red. The rest fall under Other Categories, which are shown in yellow, and Totals are represented in blue. But you can change these colours.
On the Y-axis, you can change the range from the value 2,000,000. This will start the scale from 2 million, so the length of the bar will increase instead of keeping it on Auto. Similarly, you can set up the maximum range.
You can make the breakdown dynamic, allowing you to break down data sometimes by country, sometimes by product, etc. If you want to break down based on different categories or dimensions, go to the Modelling tab and select the Parameter option. Under that, choose the Fields option. You can add fields (categories or dimensions) and reorder them. Then, drag and drop the field into the Breakdown section of the Waterfall chart.
