When Led Zeppelin heard that they were being honored, they invited Jason Bonham to be with them in the honorees section. He turned them down because he said that he had a previous engagement. Little did they know that the previous engagement was playing with Heart, to honor them.

AND, Robert repeatedly said he hated the song, "I'd break out in hives if I had to sing it again....too long, who can even remember all the words." The best remake of a song I have ever heard. Heart does this song justice and even brings a tear to Robert Plant's eye. It is incredible. Then you have Jason Bonham on drums, the son of drummer John Bonham who died many years ago when he was little. John always wore that style of hat. It is emotional to watch and gives me chills every time I watch it. Led Zeppelin are one of Heart's influences and to perform this was a huge deal for these incredibly talented women.
THE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS is an event that honors artists from music, art, literature, movies etc. They bring on people who were inspired by them to speak or sing to them. Usually, the artists they are honoring are in the audience. So yes, that is Led Zeppelin watching them.

In 1978 the Kennedy Center presented it's first Kennedy Center Honors gala. The rainbow honor medal represents the large spectrum of performers in the arts. Dancers, singers, actors, playwrights, comedians, musicians, directors and producers have all been honored. Led Zeppelin, along with Dustin Hoffman (actor), David Letterman (late night host), and Natalia Makarova (ballerina) were honored in 2012. John Bonham's son Jason played the drums in this tribute to the band. His father wore the bowler hat that Jason had on so in tribute to John the chorus also wore bowler hats. I worked the Kennedy Center honors from 1992 to 2020 and was lucky enough to see this performance. One of the best experiences I had working in that building. You'll also see Debbie Allen, Stephen Colbert, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Kimmel, and Yo Yo Ma in the audience.

That is the ribbon that holds all the medals when an artist is honored at the Kennedy Centre Honors! The drummer in Led Zeppelin, John Bonham has died and Jason Bonham is playing in this tribute to honor the band and his father. It was a complete surprise to the band who had asked Jason to accompany them to this event. Jason had to decline because it was a surprise for them. In all of the years that the Kennedy Center Honors have been broadcast, we have been able to witness some of the most amazing performances that were delivered by top artists as tributes to those being honored. If you do a search on TH-cam for Kennedy Center Honors performances and scroll down the list, you’ll be absolutely blown by the number and variety of people who have performed over the years. A recent stand out is Adam Lambert singing “Believe“ as a tribute to Cher. Absolutely amazing performance that brought Cher to tears.

Heart (Ann and Nancy Wilson) were heavily inspired by Led Zeppelin in the 70's and the opportunity to pay tribute to their idols in 2012 when the surviving members of Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones) were honored by President Obama at the Kennedy Center ... and to be joined onstage by the late drummer John Bonham's son Jason Bonham on drums was epic.
The members of Led Zeppelin loved Heart's rendition of 'Stairway to Heaven'... and Ann Wilson was so happy to get Robert Plant's seal of approval.

Kennedy Center Honors are given by President's to exceptional entertainers. The Medal straps are on the medal the President presents.
When the curtain rose and the appeared, Jimmy Paige
Exclaimed "A choir? Why didn't we do that?"
The empty chair in the group was for John Bonham, who died in 1980.
Jason was invited to sit in his chair, but told the band he had a prior commitment he couldn't avoid.
