Discovered Drach maybe two years ago and he continues to amaze. So glad that he is having the success he is because no one works harder at it. It's stunning how much content he puts up week after week--always informative and seasoned with just the right amount of that droll British humor. Especially like it when he does joint projects with other TH-cam presenters like Ryan from Battleship New Jersey or Rex from Rex's Hangar and also when he has the true academic historians like Jon Parshall on as guests. It's a tribute to Drach that these "serious" historians respect him enough to take part in episodes on his channel. He has a wonderful personality and his love and passion for the subject is very obvious--and enjoyable.

During one of the Gulf of Sidra incidents in 1986, the network evening news was talking about US Navy operations while showing film of a Soviet destroyer (the Soviet navy was not mentioned in the story). I had come up with an opinion of what was needed to be a good TH-cam person and it was the first 3 items on your list. So - I got that right. I also got right the fact that while I had the Historical Background - I had none of the other.
The best I can do is try to add something in the comments, so that's what I try to do.
I really do appreciate all the hard work that you and some of the other better Channel Owners put into your videos.

History is a somewhat mutable concept. Who will tell the story of today in about fifty years from now? How in the world could a mind of a human be interested in what happened one hundred twenty five years ago? Can facts 'on-the-ground' be interpreted from various points of view? Imagine what if.

Forget websites and the like, how many Bulletin boards, hosters (geocities) or internet providers will survive longer than 20 years these days?

As a former service member, I am extremely skeptical of any "military" historian who is not a veteran or government official with gainful, relevant experience or archival access. Historians who lack military service are not qualified to lecture on the meaning of a subject they have never engaged with on a professional or personal level. It seems obvious enough to me that I as an Army Infantry Veteran should confine my remarks to Army and Infantry Matters and never lecture on either Naval or Air Force Matters. Why then does this commonsense rule of authority not apply to Civilian Historians such as this TH-camr here? No amount of "expressing limitations" can ever make up for the fact that popular civilian historians are more concerned with revenue and audience growth then they are with the underlying military facts. The simple fact remains that their conclusions are by definition off base. Literally! It is deeply unsettling when you realize that most historians lack passion for the subject of their historical matter. A civilian, or otherwise non-authoritative, historian's only passion can be for the abstract, amorphous notion of "writing history". This is the sort of writing that creates myths rather than giving facts back to the world! I have zero confidence in a historian who says he "got a passion for the Navy" after he visited a Navy ship and then refused to join said Navy! His claim of passion for Naval Matters must be false and cannot accurately reflect his true feelings about the Navy!

Your requirement could only be applied to those writing about recent warfare. No one living now could write about hoplite warfare in ancient Greece, for example, or steppe warriors before the invention of the stirrup. Indeed, you recent experience could lead you astray. How did Alexander command his men? Can you assume he could rely on modern concepts of discipline and a military hierarchy? The best thing I have read on how Alexander might have led was by John Keegan, a lecturer at Sandhurst for many years but never a member of any armed service.

Your comment is pure BS. I was in a 400-level WWII history class in college. I was the only non-history major. The class also included a few veterans as students who took advantage of the GI Bill. It was the easiest class I ever had. I had the highest grade and set the curve on all the exams. No one else came close to me...including the veterans.
According to you Norman Friedman, John Keegan, and others have no business writing books.
