How is the quality of a Yamaha G2 made in 1993? I have heard that Yamaha G2 made in seventies and eighties were much better compared with those Yamaha G2:s which were manufactured in the nineties. Is that true?
I'm always a bit sceptical of such generalisations and particularly with used pianos I think we must really take each piano on it's own merits. So much depends on how well the piano has been looked after, tuned regularly, played but not hammered, kept in a stable environment etc. Having said that, I thought that the G series were given small improvements over time by Yamaha, until they morphed into the C series. I'm sure there are some G2s from the 70s that are great pianos, but lots would be needing a refurb by now. Yamaha's quality control has always been very, very good but I do find some Yamahas to be a little bit lacking tonally. This is a really good example though, not too bright sounding, plenty of warmth when needed and a really good range in tone as well as dynamics. We bought this piano locally from a church and I know it's history - it has been well cared for by a very good local piano tech, but only used for services once a week. It has a few little dents etc as you'd probably expect and reflected in the price of course. You're very welcome to come and play it! Matt - Berries Barn Pianos
