I always liked this group because they were not like anyone else. Great soft yet powerful vocals, wore suites, clean cut. Although I liked them when they first started out as New Wave. Their first hit song was To Cut a Long Story Short. They are wearing kilts in the video. Very different before they changed to 80's pop contemporary music.
Check it Jamal and see the difference in their style.

From Wikipedia: "Salad days" is a Shakespearean idiomatic expression meaning a youthful time, accompanied by the inexperience, enthusiasm, idealism, innocence, or indiscretion that one associates with a young person. A more modern use, especially in the United States, refers to a heyday, a period when somebody was at the peak of their abilities-not necessarily in that person's youth. The quote "salad days" is from the Shakespearean play Antony and Cleopatra and is spoken in Act 1, Scene 5, by Cleopatra.

A quick breakdown of Spandau Ballet:
Tony Hadley - lead singer with that wonderful voice that he has had since he was 14.
Gary Kemp - in the beige suit, lead/acoustic guitarist and the band's main songwriter.
Martin Kemp - bass guitarist, Gary's younger brother, in the grey suit with Gary.
Both Gary and Martin are also actors.
Steve Norman - saxophone (and bongos!).
    John Keeble - drums.
I would love to see you react to Through the Barricades about love through religious, political, racial and social divides. Bring a box of tissues!

Jamel, Rush army soldier here...I’ve been married for 25 years. When we started dating, we exchanged mix tapes (remember those days? 😁). She sent me all these 80’s new wave songs...like Spandau Ballet. I sent her 120 minutes of Rush songs...and we’re still married! LOL! She has started watching your channel for the 80’s stuff. Need you to do Mother of Pearl by Roxy Music. That will be a joyous reaction for our home. PS...when are you gonna do more Rush? 😎

If you're gonna react to these guys, you really must react to Duran Duran. There was a, probably mostly fan based competition between the two bands. I don't think I've ever seen you react to DD, which is pretty mind blowing considering how well known they are. Also, not to be shady or anything, guess which band is still actively touring and recording after 40 years? 😉 Duran Duran just dropped their latest single a couple of weeks ago off their 15th album! What has SB done lately? 🤷‍♀️ Please react to "Invisible" by Duran Duran. Then you can take a reallyyy long deep dive into the past 40years for bangers and ballads galore.

I liked SB but Duran Duran was my favourite and they were all about style too ! Jamel really should go down that rabbit hole of their 80s hits: Hungry Like the Wolf, Union of the Snake, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex, Rio, Say a Prayer, Girls on Film, Is there Something I Should Know

For some obscure reason, Duran Duran achieved greater success in the US (mind you, so did Depeche Mode and they were considered a "ridiculous" band by most of the UK media and audience and their peers). With the exception of three songs, Duran Duran is Spandau Ballet for four year-olds.

@@CandleLight1974 Spoken like someone who believed all the negativity being shoved down their throat about this band. Try expanding your horizons. SB is one dimensional and over.

    • @CandleLight1974
      @CandleLight1974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@dipsydoodle7988 Absolutely not. Spoken like someone old enough to know and remember their "music". What negativity about the band? There was hype if anything. Duran Duran are one of the most overrated bands of all time. Their lyrics were thrown together because they happened to rhyme, their melodies were plinky plonky puerile, their image was the ultimate cliche, Simon Le Bon looked like a baked potato and sounded like a fog horn (whenever I hear Do They Know It's Christmas, I roll about when he comes in sounding like he is waiting for surgery on his adenoids) and only John Taylor had the looks to compensate for the lack of talent.
You suggest that I should expand my horizons and then comment that Duran Duran are the band still making music and touring. A lack of awareness that is as sad in its desperation for attention to a band whose "new" music has gone unnoticed as it is in its being so typical of middle-aged "I only listen to who I liked in my youth".
You suggest that I should broaden my horizons and then seem (or pretend to be for your own convenience) unaware that Spandau Ballet reformed, toured and recorded again a few years ago until Tony left again. They then went onto make the mistake of a recruiting a young soundalike to replace him and, unlike other 70s and 80s bands who are now recording and performing with a new lead singer, it did not work for that sheer reason. Those other bands have recruited great singers who can sing the band's catalogue and have the stage presence to pull off a performance but do not sound like the original lead singer and, therefore, do not come across as their own tribute band. Duran Duran bang on so much about still making music (though it is barely heard outside of TH-cam) that their constant "We are not just an 80s band" line is spoofed in comedy sketches. Their new offerings are almost as embarrassing as the fact that two of them are still trying to get away in the 60s with the make-up that they wore in their 20s and 30s.
You suggest that I should expand my horizons and then go on to end your comment with something as eloquent and erudite as "SB is one dimensional and over"? Dear me! I wonder if you even realise how embarrassing it is for someone old enough to have been a "Duranie" (what a ridiculous name) to be so immature. Thank you for proving what was constantly said back then that Spandau Ballet were the thinking fan's Duran Duran.
You suggest that I should expand my horizons by listening to Duran Duran? Seriously? You are funny.

I saw Spandau Ballet in concert when this album came out and they were excellent. The fans stormed the stage at the encore cutting short the evening, grabbing and grasping at the band. It was nuts that reaction. There is a FANTASTIC documentary on the band, "Soul Boys of the Western World" which I saw in the theater but is on TH-cam in its entirety. The band documented everything and there is footage from their first gig onward and it is a "warts and all" look at the band. I hope you might get around to some of their other hits like "Lifeline", "Only When You Leave", "Highly Strung", "Communication", all great if you like "True" and "Gold".

True and Gold are 2 of the greatest, finest songs I've ever heard...and they form part of the equation of the Two-Instantantly-Very-Recognisible-Songs type of bands from the 80s (not that their other songs ain't worth it thou), like Wham (Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Careless Whisper), A Flock Of Seagulls (I Ran and Space Age Love Song), ABC (Poison Arrow and When Smokey Sings), Level 42 (Lessons In Love and Something About You), Heaven 17 (Temptation and Come Live With Me), Alphaville (Big In Japan and Forever Young), New Order (Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday), OMD (Electricity and Enola Gay), Frankie Goes To Hollywood (Relax and Two Tribes), Wang Chung (Dance Hall Days and Everybody Have Fun Tonight), Men Without Hats (The Safety Dance and Pop Goes The World), Thompson Twins (Hold Me Now and Doctor!Doctor!), Altered Images (I Could Be Happy and Don't Talk To Me About Love), The Motels (Only The Lonely and Suddenly Last Summer), Missing Persons (Words and Destination Unknown), Talk Talk (Today and It's My Life), Go West (We Close Our Eyes and King Of Wishful Thinking), Simple Minds (Don't You Forget About Me and Alive And Kicking), Naked Eyes (Always Something There To Remind Me and Promises Promises), Glass Tiger (Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone and Someday), The Cutting Crew (I Just Died In Your Arms and I've Been In Love Before), The Psychedelic Furs (Ghost In You and Pretty In Pink), Cock Robin (The Promise You Made and When Your Heart Is Weak), The Style Council (Shout To The Top and Walls Come Tumbling Down), Big Country (In A Big Country and Look Away), Icehouse (Crazy and Electric Blue), and Ultravox (Dancing With Tears In Your Eyes and Vienna), just to mention a few...
