I think Gavin Harrison said on some interview that he actually records his own voice on the click telling himself which section is coming etc. So he doesnt have to stress about remembering anything and he can focus on actually playing. If I remember correctly..

I'd call Tesseract demo days “djent” for sure. Since Altered State they've definitely expanded their sound to more progressive than djent.

    • @Shorjok

They've simply redefined what it means to dj0nt

I feel like TesseracT use Djent in a prog-metal way, calling them strictly a Djent band would be like calling them a jazz band cause that have a Saxophone solo in a couple songs.

Always found it way more reliable to learn things by ear rather than reading sheet music. When I was like 12 i was getting bored of sight reading and decided to learn all of Planetary Duality by ear and ever since I can learn anything with my ears... besides this, Jay is a mad man for learning this stuff by ear.

My fave comments from Craig in this video:
*"Think my Dad told me to punch them in the nose."
*"That's some big brain, Rainman s**t."
*"Waiting for LeBrie's autotune rig to show up."
    😂

They are djent imo. I think djent is so frowned upon that, if it sounds good “it isnt djent”. Ive seen tons of people put periphery and monuments in the metalcore category for the same reason

  • @derrickseidwalk6423

I feel like Tesseract falls somewhere in between djent and progressive. Progressive I feel usually comes along with more flashy playing, solos and the such. Tesseract, while they are all incredible masters of their craft, aren't known for being overly flashy or ripping solos that I personally incorporate with progressive metal. They however groove above the best of them. However between the key changes, meter changes, style changes, they incorporate a lot of qualities you would find in progressive metal. I think that's what makes them such an easy band to love. They cross different tastes of music to attract many different types of listeners. Overall, take the most talented and creative rhythm players in the UK, give them an incredible vocalist....Tesseract.

i was at this gig and i am probably in the minority saying this but i thought the sound was better for them than dream theater!

I saw Dream Theatre at Download right after Animals As Leaders and I thought the DT sound was trash in comparison

    • @tomgleeson-hammerton2060
      @tomgleeson-hammerton2060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven't seen DT since Portnoy left, but I remember them being one of the best sounding live bands, even in shitty venues. I know Portnoy was very fussy about live sound and presentation, so I wonder if that has slipped a little bit?
Having said that, I've seen Tesseract live twice, and they are so clean. I think they mainly use DI don't they? Everything is just so clear and crisp with them.

I can get behind the last statement 🤣. Happens more often than not, that I stop listening to a song/band the second the vocalist opens their mouth. Or songs I heard without vocals in a drum play through for example and with vocals I can't listen for 5 seconds. I wish, more bands would release their music with and without vocals.

Early tesseract was djent. Now they are primarily classified as prog-rock/metal. With that being said there is still some djent style rhythms sprinkled throughout there new music and done very tastefully.

I always thought that way I'd learning was normal. I was taught by a music school jazz teacher. I play metal and hard rock. He tried teaching me how to read notes on the kit and I just learned by watching him and knowing how to count. It's like one big math problem once you know what you're doing.
