I've got a pioneer gm-a200 I would love to send you so you can do a test on it. I'm sure it's very rare as I cannot even find info on it so I have no idea how to hook it up unfortunately.
@@michaelhollon5332 yeah I've spent hours today looking up info on it. Really interested to know if it's one of pioneers first car amplifiers. It was made in 84. So I'm kinda nervous to hook it up and test it honestly.
Big D. You might want to have that amp checked. As it was a promotional product where MA wanted to show case their abilities and the 4 channel was highly underrated, I wonder if there is something going on electronically on the sub side. Just a thought.
I ran the hk2000 and hk12's for a minute years ago. Honestly I miss it . The subs were ribbed like the new gold letter kickers. I can't say anything bad about my experience. Ty sir for sharing 👍🤞
I think there was something wrong with the sub side. Either that or MA cheaped-out since this was supposedly a promo item. Contrary to what most are posting here, during the particular years MA was making this line, their products were no slouch and they did rated. Granted, they did rated at 14.4 or higher, but they always performed. They made a 1200w monoblock version of this amp. My guess is that's what internals were on the sub side of the amp.
Looks like a few of the caps had leaked. That could explain the issue. (Dark stuff on the board next to the base of a few of the caps not under the fan).
I had the MA audio 4400 watt RMS class x amplifier in high school and that is the most powerful amplifier to date I've ever had I really wish they were still in business
Jesus, Big D, the cool factor on this amp is through the roof. I remember back in the day getting into car audio I was always struck by MA audio equipment because they posted the craziest numbers for wattage for all of their equipment. Ended up with 2 12" ALUMQs on an Audiobahn HCT2300 for my first system. Man I miss that system. People shit on those old school companies but like most of em at one point they made great equipment.
Whether or not it was done intentionally, placing capacitors directly in the airflow of a fan is a good idea. The cooler you keep those capacitors, the longer they'll last. I see it all the time where electronics manufacturers place capacitors right next to high heat dissipating components, like right up against hot heatsinks or power resistors. Guess what fails first? You guessed it, the capacitors!
Fans definitely need replaced. Maybe when you figure out whats wrong with that one channel. You can bring it back to the dyno and see if the results improve. The sub side should have done its ratings and some. Other than that a very impressive amp. Almost looks like dj equipment.
Agree. Just made a comment about this. Was sponsored back in the day with all MA Gear. With steady voltage at 14.4, they easily gave you rated. MA Gear in this particular era was quite good actually. Popular at competitions in my area.
The one channel with the issue was on the 4ch side, not either of the 2 sub channels. It appears the sub channels were overrated and it was obvious to me the 1 ohm 2500 watt rating could not be true as 1/2 ohm stereo said 900x2. That should equate to 1800 watts at 1 ohm mono.
@1:53 I still have an MA2601HX, always wished I had a pair to strap, but never managed to get another one. Thanks for the overall page view BigDWiz, kind of funny seeing the MSRP of these. Not bad amps, I was always into MA Audio, but nothing special either, I always felt mine never quite did rated power, still, it held up running 0.5-ohm just fine. I loved the look of these amps, just beautiful.
I worked for a MA AUDIO/AUDIOBAHN direct dealer in Massachusetts for a few years around the turn of this century. We also sold Ultimate Audio, DHD, KOHLER, & Fultron/Memphis Audio. I had a few talks with these companies directly about some of their designs. I also spoke with Alma Bates.... Personally I compeated in USAC AUDIO DRAGS w/ a 88' FORD RANGER SUPERCAB using a MA HC 4002 AMP, 4 15" DVC 6ohm MA subs, 3 caps, 3 batteries and a 3-disc Jensen head unit. 152-153dB consistently in drag competition with this setup was nothing to sneeze at. The 35c/36c output chips where the same as used in top amps by SOUNDSTREAM and the TI TL494 Chipped unregulated power supply was tried&true reliable. The HC series of MA AUDIO amps were not junk, I wish I still had that amp today.... 😎😎😎
Damn, I badly want to help a friend of mine find a new amplifier, just in case....because I would love to see you dyno his MA Audio "400" Watts RMS @ 4 ohm amp. I say "400" Watts, because it has been modded, massively. And it has been modded since about 2002-2003 not long after he had bought it brand new. It still runs BEAUTIFULLY to this day, hooked up at 1 ohm. He won several sound competitions in our area, even when he was in classes above his pay grade, so to speak. His total cost for his entire setup was about $2,500.00-$3,000.00 for speakers, stereo, amp. and subs and box. He beat a kid that had nearly $15,000.00 total in his system at one point. MA Audio built some surprising equipment, and their 400 Watt RMS amp was super easy to modify and took to it extremely well.
It's still pretty sweet, I would love to us something like that for a home theater setup. Should give them a dollar pr watt rating and compare today's dollar to then.
This app looks nice, my friend had some of these amps in his camaro. Here in the UK, I will have to dig up the magazine, but it was from about 2k4 (2004)......
I think this will be best to mount on a display so people can play with all of the adjustment knobs. It is a great lesson to see how frequency adjustment affects sound
I used to have two 15-in MTX thunder 9500 dual voice coil 2 ohm subs in a 6 cubic foot box push by an MA audio amp that I can't remember the model number of. Nothing I have ever seen not at the competition level it is hard as that. My pickup I had it in had to have three or four frame repairs because it would beat the rivets out.
The stereo output was very good, more than i expected. Then the sub test was kind of what i was expecting from mobile authority. On the bright side at least the heatsink is full unlike the low end of mobile authority.

I'm not to surprised at the subwoofer rating levels. Back in 2002 there were all kinds of Flea Market brands coming out big from Audiobahn, Ma Audio, Visonik, UltraLinear, Thump!. Just to name a few. I tried them all and some products were good others were obviously weak and way overrated. Lol I went ahead and did a full Audiobahn system install this year on my truck mainly for Nostalgia purposes and i gotta say their products still sound good for being so old. Just sad to see them and all the other brands i mentioned above all went of business. Lol
Sometimes I hate being right. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I would like to see the more common M/A amps tested. I suspect they will underperform as well.
They always looked good. Especially the ones with the VU meter and the nice handles. They made nice flush mount installs. They always seem to be overrated. With that said I never had one die on me. I had my hands on a few back then.
The shop I worked at sold MA , I really felt bad for the customers that bought the subs and amps. I’d seen many woofers brought back in toasted. Amps were rated robustly and performed average. Just wanted to say that amp is a great looking addition to your collection.
I dug an amp out of my shed I forgot I even had but can't find anything on the web about it, it's a Cyclone 1600 watt model number CA-1494, have you come across one of these before, it is made in China so it may be just some off brands that faded like the hair bands but as I remember this thing really slammed but I was young and was happy with anything louder than stock, it only has one 40 amp fuse so from watching your videos it couldn't even come close to 1600 but if you come across one I would like to see it on the dyno.
with only a 40 amp fuse at best it could maybe do 500 watts but a pretty good rule for older amps anyways is add a 0 to the fuse rating. so a 100 amp fuse would mean it should do 1000+ watts and if a amp is rated for 1000 watts and has a 150 amp fuse you have a pretty good chance it will do 1500+ watts

Cool video Big D. I don't ever recall seeing that big ole amp in any of the magazines from back in the day. Considering that I have an MA amp at the house that has a bad potentiometer in it(didn't realize it until after the fact that I had repaired the power supply section and put it all back together 😡)... hopefully that is all that's wrong with your amp. Don't know if that amp has the same type(brand) of potentiometers...but the one that I have to replace is very crappy. ✌
@@wal Yeah...hopefully it is. Forgot to mention that I also had a Punch 100.2 where one channel was doing rated power and the other channel wasn't. It too had a bad potentiometer.

I'm goi n with JBL's in the doors, & 2 15" CTS in a cab below read seat F150 supercrew. 208 watt/4 channel Sony bluetooth/cd/fm. Will provide alt. Amp for subs controlled by Sony head. Stock (or close to it) appearance. You keep it longer that way. Lol. Nice vid, but too many teasers. More meat please... 😎
When the test first started..i noticed something seemed to be wrong with the amp! You say one channel is weak, plus the sub channels massive fail.. I'd say it needs repairing properly! Including new fans as those bearings are definitely dead lol shame i live so far away, i'd love to service it haha.. What a unique and awesome looking amp! The faults just make me want to probe and rev engi it, some schematics of it would be freaking awesome! Also makes repair much easier of course.. Wow.. I want one to run indoors! Hah..make an interesting surround amp wouldn't it? Who needs a center speaker anyways? Quadraphonic 4 channel sound with 2 subs = better than 5.1?!
@@wal Of course I would lol I'm no thief! I wouldn't have the room to keep it, I'd have to wall mount it or something and have a bank of power supplies, caps and batteries lol! 😄

I don't know what the results are going to be with this amp but I had two MA audio 12s and a ma audio amp 4 channel on my mids and highs and on my subs and with an old school pioneer premier head unit with the dolphins and race cars on the screen saver and sold the vehicle it was a 1996 Chevy Blazer but I believe I purchase these subs amp mids and highs in the 2000 error and i know this guy who still has the subs mids and highs amp and the pioneer premier CD player still working in 2020 everything still working fine and the Blazer still putting around banging
Even though the company lied its still a beautiful amp and is apart of bass history. The 30ban eq is awsome complete control. Its somewhat impressive however the low power is definitely a turn off and let down
with the 4 channel side numbers going so far over the rated power makes me wonder if the sub side doesn't have a power supply circuit problem that is bleeding off voltage...there is no way I believe that MA would deliberately put an amp of that caliber out with one side under performing that much.....
So, if you test at a specific frequency, and the massive MA has a crapload of EQ controls.....wouldn’t you want to turn the gains all the way up to test for maximum capability? I’m not an audio expert, but this just seems to make sense to me. That’s not to say you want to run it that way, but MA might have published its ratings based on everything cranked. Will an amp like this clip at a different level if the appropriate level on the EQ is changed? I also realize that cranking it up might induce clipping faster......but that was the eighties. 😎

did you already compare with McIntosh mc4000m ? am corious with the sound quality comparation
Oh that Mac is a dream amp
@@wal yes , well, that make me more corious with the sound comparation . Here that amps . It's blow up and I send to the factory. Just 1 day only and get burn again. So make modification at the power supply more powerful. th-cam.com/video/0Kzb6QHuLrw/w-d-xo.html
It could be as simple as the pot 👈😜
@@wal
Yeah...hopefully it is. Forgot to mention that I also had a Punch 100.2 where one channel was doing rated power and the other channel wasn't. It too had a bad potentiometer.
KILLER FIND!!! BET YOU PAID PRETTY MUCH THE GOING RATE, WITH A RARE FIND. LOVE to catch a find like the old Fosgate 600watt (?) Amp. I don't need elaborate, just need CLEAN. 😎
Coulda also swore the later model could run at half ohm loads too
Well packaged, Watched the Sundown tutorial?
I did the tutorial about packing amps 5 years ago...
Yeah they're late to the party, but then again... Their amplifier prices are too. Glad we got Orion.
This video was released on my birthday.
That would be sweet! Too bad it would cost a fortune to ship round trip and it sounds like you may not want to return after shipping 😊
@@wal Of course I would lol I'm no thief! I wouldn't have the room to keep it, I'd have to wall mount it or something and have a bank of power supplies, caps and batteries lol! 😄
Wonder if that amp would be better in a 4 way system with a true sub amp??
It should work great for this setup
Can you test the amplifier impact hc 550.2 ?
I always liked all the products you you do all the time on TH-cam is a lot of different things that you do and you know it say I do like everything that you do your tests are accurate and enjoy every minute
I find it so weird that you have to turn it upside down to hook and unhook cables lol.
Can you explain the breaking resistor thing?
In some of the pictures it looks like the Caps were leaking?
I'm wondering if they've leaked or if that's just schmoo for vibration damping.
It's glue for vibration protection
That would look good in a ol Impala!
Yessir!!
Should have tried 16v for ratings I know hardkore versions are 14 and 16 rated for higher numbers
Gotta run the sub side on half a ohm to get any power of it
Those caps look like they may have leaked and that would explain the reduction on power output
Even though the company lied its still a beautiful amp and is apart of bass history. The 30ban eq is awsome complete control. Its somewhat impressive however the low power is definitely a turn off and let down
I never been a fan of ma audio reminds me of audiobahn
I believe at the time they were both owned by Anaba Corp.
Same company. Also visonik
I believe they made thump speakers too.
for sure, ma was garbage. cool looking amp though.
@@xfiringsquadx and I think Alphasonik when they popped back up as well.
with the 4 channel side numbers going so far over the rated power makes me wonder if the sub side doesn't have a power supply circuit problem that is bleeding off voltage...there is no way I believe that MA would deliberately put an amp of that caliber out with one side under performing that much.....
What a BEAST!!!!
Cranking everything to the right won’t make more power. Just would make it distort sooner
1,000 watts on the sub channel... Id still run it.
Won’t fit in many trunks, but would be a cool show piece!
Love that slap knock-out clip. He got knocked the $%#@ out !
