Interesting note about the C-Bill; its the generalized currency BECAUSE ComStar controls all interplanetary communication. The C-Bill is backed by the HPG. One C-Bill is equal to a set amount of data that can be sent through the HPG (I forget exactly how much but its like, three, four pages worth of data). An unchanging, unmutable, physics-backed standard that can't ever change because the HPG system has a hard cap on its capabilities.
Which makes sense in a universe where precious metals and similarly valuable elements have become FAR less rare than before, and even stuff like Germanium (which was the basis of the Star Leauge dollar for a while, and before that the Hegemony Dollar) are found all over the place.
Plus, the C-Bills value stays the same no matter what, anywhere, any time. Doesnt matter which House your in or what you're doing; if you want to send information, its gonna be through an HPG. Thats required.
This is opposed to, say, House Bills (or H-Bills) which are the internal currency of whatever nation you're in, and their overall value fluctuates as most money does in relation to whatevers going on in the nation currently.
(Something tells me Liao bills werent worth all that much during the 4th Succession War for example).

Proof of Work currencies have their value backed by the electricity cost of maintaining the network. Because each "miner" expends work to perform math functions, you can expect the owner of that miner to demand a certain level of value from the hash they complete. While it's a bit messier than the HPG since computational technology is evolving and becoming more efficient, the premise remains that the value is backed by the cost of electricity. It's not crypto's fault that a bunch of old world bankers caught wind of a system that would invalidate their fractional reserve banking scam and derailed it through wild speculative trading schemes.

When Comstar first formed, im not surprised noone paid much notrice to them taking Terra. I mean if your neighbour broke down your fence and took a shit at your backdoor, you're not going to pumnch out the mailman when they brazenly rob the house across the street

    • @KillerOrca
      @KillerOrca 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

Technically the Lyrans noticed, and were planning an invasion of Terra...but then, OUT OF NOWHERE, unmarked military forces arrived and annhilated their stockpiled supplies and the force garrisoned there.
Then left without ever saying a word.
No one claimed the attack and no one ever found out who it was.

    • @liljenborg2517
      @liljenborg2517 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

As things were ramping up for what would become the First Succession War, EVERY faction wanted Terra and were making plans to take it. The whole point to the "succession" wars, was who would succeed to the position of First Lord - and any faction that actually held Terra would be able to claim "moral high ground" - or at least the "possession is nine tenths of the law" ground - in the contest. When forces showed up and cleaned out the five factions "security garrisons" in the system - and, at first, nobody knew who they were - and then Blake demanded everyone respect Terra's neutrality, he effectively took that move off the table. And everyone respected Blake's call for neutrality, first because he threatened interdiction - and your financial sector would be crippled without being able to stock trade on an interstellar level - but second, because if _he's_ holding Terra as a neutral system, then the Kuritans or the Liaos or anyone else wouldn't be able to hold it, either.
So, at first, he got away with it because, before things got utterly insane as the war ground on, the five House lords saw it as a practical thing - a neutral middle ground, and an important bit of ground that none of your rivals could ever claim. They also needed to maintain their communications links, and as advanced as the five houses were back in the day, the Terran Hegemony had kept the HPG as secret as they could, so they didn't want to make Blake angry.
He was able to keep getting away with it because before too long, all five of the Successor States were too dependent on ComStar (for news, for communications, for diplomacy, and for interstellar currency exchange) to think about crossing them.

Comstar had one huge advantage: control of ther HPG's. Operation Silver Shield followed a total communication black out. And managing such vast star empires requires the quick flow of information. Just look at why the Terran Alliance failed and why the Reunification Wars were so slow: slow speed of information. Just think of our time: holding an empire together in the old times required trust into your subordinates doing the best for the realm and not their small slice of territory. And when you in your capital hundreds of miles away hear weeks after an invasion of the actual invasion you can think about the rest. That and Blake had already secured all states respect Comstar's neutrality and territory. And every time Comstar issued a communication interdiction it hurt (House Davion was so far the only realm to somehow mitigate said interdiction thanks to the Black Boxes)

you are a-miss on your description of space travel. the jumpships make a near instant transit from point A to point B. the power bank recharge only takes 1 to 4 DAYS.
the real issue is the travel from Zenith or Nadir points of the solar system. the jumpships arrive at either of these locations. then the dropships separate from the jumpship and travel to the planet. this is the time factor. the dropship transit time is between 3 days to 3 weeks.
in practice, many jumpships also have a massive battery which allows multiple jumps. thus, a jumpship which normally travels up to 30 light years, can in fact, travel up to 60 and 90 light years - nearly instantaneously.
the recharge time of the battery is only a single day.
depending on the target planet, travel time from the jump point to the planet and the dropships engine burn, you can actually make planet-fall approx 48hrs after initial departure. spend the time to "dump" your cargo. then take off and return to the jumpship. another quick jump and be home...
entire round trip, approx 5 DAYS...
    not months.

i think it takes months for actual trips that go anywhere, to use American cities as a basis, since that is what I know, traveling from New York to Philidelphia, cities that are so close that thier metro areas almost run into each other. if that takes 5 days imagine any kind of legitimate travel, across the country.

    • @bruced648
      @bruced648 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@jeremiahplaysWOW yes and no. the jump itself is not what is taking time. upon arrival at the planetary system, the jumpship is at either the nadir point or the zenith point (north or south) of the sun. the distance from the sun is based upon the gravitational pull. the real travel time is going from the zenith or nadir to the planet itself.
a low gravitational pull star means the zenith or nadir will be closer to the planets, thus a shorter travel time (1 to 7 days). a stronger gravitational pull can cause the zenith or nadir to be further away, thus a travel to up to 28 days.
using your example, you fly from New York to LA and the 'jump' takes 10-20 seconds. the next step is to take a taxi to your hotel. that varies due to distance the hotel is from the airport.

And to the people who think that Comstar and Mechanicus are very oddly simmilar- it is not a case of plaguerism, but a case of taking inspirations from the same source (quite possibly).
And this source is "A Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller- bet ya didn't think this lore comes with a reading requirements, huh?
The same book also inspired Fallout and the tennets of Brotherhood of Steel (back before Bethesda'sin house writers shaited the bed and made the stains everyone elses problem)
And it is both ammusing and lovely how Steve's whole tactic is both being severely uninformed and not kowing himself what he will do next. He is a literary drunken fist master who would bumble his way to victory through any universe you would throw him into, the writters have no power over him as he doesn't even care to have powers over his own powers.

I love ComStar. They're so insanely broken/overpowered because they were the only ones willing to actually maintain the communications system, then used the remnants of the SLDF to protect it. Blake was a fucking menace, but unfortunately, he was fucking right. He had seen the writing on the wall about how the Great Houses had been behaving for centuries and went "Well, there's about to be a power vacuum and it's going to get so much worse." And took the only steps that were possible to limit it, in making the HPG network neutral and separate from everyone else. Then ComStar went and stole Earth, then it went badly from there.

Comstar was the only organization that could operate the HPGs en masse before the 1st succession war, and the great houses planned on replacing them knce they trained people.
    +
The deification of Jerome Blake was his own plan becaue he thought that the only way comstar's purpose could be achieved was through the ability to stand the test of tume found only in religions like Christianity. Toyama messed this up by maming the organization zealots, when Blake wanted moderates.
    +
The comgaurd was not an elite organization. It was driven to victory mostly by fanaticism and gokd tactics.
    +
Comstar lost. A lot. Especially in the lrad up to yhat clan invasion. They couldnt stop the lostech Renaissance, one if their primary objectives.
    +
Nobody knew what the heck comstar was doing most if the time. Most people thought they were just neutral observers. Even hosue lords like Hanse Davion, a political mastermind, thought they were harmless before they were forced to play their hand. My sources for these last two paragraphs: the Warrior Trilogy, Wolves on the Border, the Price of Glory.
    +
Clan wolf has significantly worse plot armor, and y'all simp for it.
    End tldr.
You guys get so much wrong/omit so much cricial information here. Lets begin at the beginning: C-Bills and the HPG network. Ill start with C-Bills. The reason why everyone uses C-bills id because theyre backed by the HPG network, its a certain amount if transmission time and/or data. So its constant and fixed, inflation just doesnt exist because of the hard limits of the HPG network. This means that while House bills, or H-billd fluctuate, C-Bills are always worth about the same amount.
The HPG network is a very complex beast, and few outside of comstar knew how to use it prior to the first Succession war, nostly operators of the great houses' mobile hpg networks. The houses initially agreed to comstar neutrality becauee they planned to replace them eventually with their own people, and because Jerome Blake tricked each of them into thinking the other house lord's had already agreed to the deal, which woild keave them at a significant disadvantage if it had been true. After the devestation of the 1st succesion war, they didnt have enough time or tech to rebuild after that.
You completely missed that the Deification of Jerome Blake was Blake's own intentionally plan. His purpose for comstar was to preserve the knowledge humanity had, so that once humanity had finally ended it's petty squabbles or nuked itself enough, comstar could emerge and reforge a new star league, one without the great houses. He saw that his secular organization wouldnt last, so he instead made it religious, as the only things that really survive throughout the ages are religion, like the catholic church which had endured for thousands of years. He knew Comstar needed that same longevity, so, he created alternative versions if his journals and told Toyama that after his death, he had ro go about creating the religion. Sadly, Toyama screwed it up. Instead of getting the moderate religion that Blake had wanted, Toyama created a zealous organization bent on fulfilling the prophecy no matter what, even if that required getting their hands dirty.
That whole thing is key to Comstar, and you dint even mention it, and just skirt around the all the hardships and setbacks comstar faced. Comstar has lost, and badly. The Federated Commonwealth and the 4th Succession war and the war of 3039 are excellent examples of this, where despit their best efforts, the Fedcom defied the balance taht comstar had carefully crafted, forcing comstar to act far more openly than previously and making them lose their technological grip on things.
Also, you blew the Comgaurd's capabilities and effectiveness way out if the water. On tukayyid all they had going for them were numbers, good equipment, and fanatascism. They didnt have many elite troops, most of them were green or regulars. They beat the clans because of Focht and their fanatascism to blake's word.
Notice something? You say that comstar has the hand of the author behind it, and you dont even realize that by the time of the ckan invasion, one of their top priorities, the monitored decline of technology throughout the inner sphere, had failed. The Helm memory core ensbled the great houses to reclaim a lot of lostech, and comstar failed to contain that breach. By the time of the clan invasion, lostech has been reintroduced to line units. Comstar lost the tech battle.
Also, most people, even house lords, have no idea what Comstar is doing behind the scenes. This is really well illustrated in the Warrior Trilogy and Wolves on the Border, where we, the omniscient reader, can dee what they are doing, but the main characters, one of which is Hanse Davion, First Prince of the Fedsuns, has no clue what's going on with them or most of what theyre doing, even their most blatant actions are hard to understand for one if the greatest tacticians in the history of inner sphere politics.
Clan Wolf's plot armor, a faction you guys simp for, is so much worse. They get Nicky Kerensky to join them, they delay the clan invasion by 60 years, they almost win against EVERY OTHER CLAN in their trial of refusal against operation revival (ehat the clan's called the clan invasion), and the they, as a "punishment" are guven the highly coveted honor of invading the inner sphere. They, against all rhyme and reason defy clan culture and think about how wars are actually fought traditionally, with supply lines, something that runs counter to how the clans fight. They win in tulayyid when everyone else aside from the Bear's fail. They even benefit greatly from what little they list in Tukayyid, losing their SaKahn which let Phelan Kell, a nobody to the Clanners who had no buisness in leadership step into the role, whcih saves them during the wars of reaving. In the wars of reaving, when they finally get beaten by the Jade Falcons, they have a splinter group break off (which is fine) BUT THEN they come back as "The Jade Wolves" before becoming just the wolves again. WHICH MAKES NO FREAKING SENSE. Jts completely out of character for the falcons. They just win and win and win and win. Even in the Ilclan Era all they do is win. And you claim comstar, a factionwhich loses, had limitations, and has a rich and interesting history and motivation is a mary sue faction? Nah bro.

Comstar's end goal, which he conveniently left out, was to be the savior's of humanity. Once all technology failed, they were to emerge as the house lord's collapsed, creating a Star League where the great houses were a non-issue, and all could have access to the great technology of the Star League. They didn't worship technology, they worshipped the Star League and the tools which they used to forge that great empire. The Mechanicus on the other hand, are trasnhumanists. They want to "ascend" human form and become machines, worshipping technology because of their god, a machine god. They worship the tech, not its makers.

Sorry had to be said but at th-cam.com/video/vKiFt02GBIs/w-d-xo.html you said that every other faction respected Comstar's neutrality, this isn't actually true. The Houses during this time had forces on Terra which was also home to Comstar, with the Houses originally planning to try and takeover Terra to not only have a better claim to the 'First Lord' position, but to also control the Prime Circuit (Think HPG station hub that is centre to everything). Comstar literally killed all the House forces on Terra and declared that they owned Terra (and the Sol system) and that any attack against them would mean that they'd shut down the HPG of the attacking nation (and not the others, if they didn't attack Terra). The only reason that the Houses accepted this was not only because the Succession Wars were just beginning, but also thanks to the fact important communications that were vital to their nations weren't under threat of the other house, For the time being, they would attempt to gain control of HPG station/Comstar itself for a time. Until ROM sorted them out and the Houses decided that it was too much to try.

Hey I'm not a Comstar apologist but if you look at the whole universe of the lore, from the Amaris Civil War all the way to the foundation of Comstar with Jerome Blake you can also look at Comstar as the father of the Inner Sphere while all the great houses are children who do not stop blowing themselves up with nuclear and chemical weapons. I was anti Comstar up until I followed the events of the Amaris Civil War and I absolutely understand why Blake wanted to have a monopoly over communication. It's because the great houses are too stupid to get along and always want to plunge themselves into border wars and all out war. In reality Comstar is a necessary neutrality to make sure the great houses do not nuke themselves into nuclear annihilation because they keep breaking their own Ares Convention oaths.
I find it most ironic that the Clans and Comstar were the main factions that clashed the hardest on Tukayyid since Kerensky and Blake were good buddies that respected each other before the great exodus. Even Blake gave Kerensky's great exodus fleet safe passage by disabling the HPG networks so that no one would interrupt the migration fleet. It was ironic Blake's and Kerensky's successors that always manage to screw everything up, much like anyone in our reality tends to as well.

The existence of the Star League baited the Successor states into mistakenly thinking they could become the *new* star league, and thus resulted in the Succession Wars, and the two most absolutely insane factions of the setting, Comstar and the Clans are both direct offshoots of Star League organizations.
