Does his ward ability work so that the opponent must sacrifice a legendary otherwise the spell targeting Sauron is countered?

Yes. The opponent must sacrifice a legendary in order to slip through the ward. I had it backwards haha. I will make amends. Thank you for bringing this oversight to my attention!
