  • A compilation of 26 preserved steam locomotives climbing one of the most notorious gradients in railway preservation on arguably the UK's premier heritage railway. The 1/49 section begins just after the motive power depot and continues all the way to the platform ramp at Goathland. While the climb to the summit is way beyond Goathland station and on easier grades the severity of the climb is in excess of 2.5 miles, the full climb from Grosmont is around three miles in length. I have been visiting the railway since I was a child but I have only been recording videos since 2014. The majority of angles that are captured cover the majority of the climb and are showcased in geographical sequence. Only one small section of line does not feature, that is line from Green End Bank to the start of the long straight to Beck Hole, which is about 500 yards give or take, this is due to the tightness of the land and the adjacent cutting/embankments.
I hope you enjoy the compilation of locos which I have been able to capture over the years. Locos featured

Excellent! Steam locomotives doing what they were made to do. No stupid music to spoil things...just beautiful working steam locomotives sounds/songs.
That's the way to make these videos. Thanks.

    Beautiful video.
I initially clicked on the video thinking it was a model railroad.
The scenery and it's colours are also beautiful

We are so fortumate to have so many heritage rrailways some of which are quite large charities. You rarely have to travel more than 50 miles in England and Wales to find a decent steam railway so there are plenty of opportuniies for video. Steam on the main line is also common with typically between 2-5 services most days through the summer.

This video is fantastic. The grades are a little easier than our 1 in 40 but these do make the engines bark nicely

Watching later in the film now and got to where you get some great shots where you do pan round and they are great, I always feel a surge of thrilled excitement as the loco fills the frame and slams past with an explosion of sound and runs away from you to complete the thrill of it all, wonderful stuff, thank you so much from an old man who can't get around any more to practice what I preach, very best wishes to you, Pete

THRILLING! THE STEAM LOCOS ARE REALLY THE MAJESTIC ROYALTY of Railways! The Audios and the Smoke Coming out of the Engines make the Locos Living ! Why did they not resort to pulverized Fuel Injection?

It's been tried and may yet be tried again. It would require complete re engineering of the grate and blastpipe at the least.

Many thanks, Phil and Liam, for a superb compilation on a highly imaginative theme. Even though we tend to take for granted the quality of your video (and audio) captures, these are outstanding without exception, representing a massive amount of filming effort. The adoption of geographical sequence adds to the professional impact, with varied angles at each location completing the effectiveness. I particularly enjoyed the double headers and top'n'tails, but those also serve to highlight the achievement of the single locos. I also like your artistic licence with the naming of 34092 and 34081! Kind regards, Bob.
p.s. Do you know if there is a map available with all of the location names (not just the stations), please?

It's often more down to local conditions over anything else, damp mornings when the track hasn't been used in a while are always worse whteber the engine. Normally improves after the first couple of trains mind.

The "1/49" you can leave junk "rolling stock" parked on and isn't one tenth long enough to be considered a real "grade" or even long enough for one of those dinky-ass "trains" to fit on all at once. And looks closer to 1 foot in 49 YARDS than 1 foot in 49 feet, lol.
