However, the constantly changing rules and new materials(the ball and the glue) introduced by ITTF have already killed the penholders and this kind of skills and techniques.
If this is really not trolling, slow the video down to 0.25x speed. Especially with that speed it is, bright as day, visible that he was shakehanding when he smashed the ball
3:16 Why Xu Xin stopped playing like this? It's not every time you need to backhand topspin, sometimes you can use the push (shoto), even finalize with it, just like Ma lin.
in todays TT PenHold players, if you don't have a solid RBH, you wont compete VS shakehand players by just blocking and pushing. look at XX now, he has a solid RBH shot when hes in a tight spot, and can pull off a quick topspin rather than pushing it back. but if he has the chance, he will pivot for a FH shot instead.
boy has xu xin's techniques and playstyle changed since then. so many times he just pushed the ball back when today's XX just RBH flicks nearly anything.
We don't see too many players that can win a fair amount of long rallies against Xu Xin. This is one of them. I would say it is almost 50/50. Ma Lin was near the end of his career. Overall, I think Ma is the better player compared to Xu Xin.
Well, you’re comparing a past-prime Ma Lin to a pre-prime Xu Xin which is kinda unfair. Ma Lin retired in 2013, 3 years after this match took place, and Xu Xin only joined the national team in 2006, 4 years before this match, and his prime is generally agreed to be in 2013ish. Ma Lin had more than a decade worth of experience, and I’d argue that since either player is in their prime, experience is the ultimate factor. The fact that a young Xu Xin could best Ma Lin, an amazing tactician, shows Xu Xin’s natural talent, and skill. Sure Ma Lin has the better medal count, but Id say Xu Xin is a better player, but lived in an age full of legends (Wang Hao’s career, Ma Long, ZJK, FZD etc).
Xu Xin is the octopus while Ma Lin is the honey badger. One could recover any shot while the other could initiate any nasty short attack. Amazing match!
So many old school penhold techniques on display here, especially we can see how XX stopped playing alot of old penholder repertoire in order to match new generations of SH playeds. These forehand flicks at 4:15 and 8:19 are particularly coo!
One have to admit that when two penholders play against each other, it's always a lethal battle. Sadly Xu Xin couldn't able to gain much fame in singles coz of intense competition with his counterparts in China but he's one of the most skillful player. Still going strong 👍🏼👍🏼
@@purpose6113this was in 2010, and yes Xu Xin used to use a lot more TPB. Around 2013, Xu Xin’s private coach told him to ditch TPB and focus more on rpb consistency, but before then, Xu Xin used much more TPB in his matches.
许昕这个时候打的多好啊,全台正手加推挡,现在练横打四不像,还把影响了正手。XU played better compared now. at that time his right hand was dominate. nowadays, his right hand is not so powerful, unfortunately his back hand also not so good, and may have a negative effects on his right hand.
The level of skill displayed here is just insane.

Are you here from Table Skills Xu Xin - Chinese Cloudwalker? :D

Junyi Yu yep, the purposes of why ITTF doing so is very obvious.
Penhold vs Penhold at its absolute best. Xu Xin plays some beautiful shots at the end to seal the match. What a match!!!
6:09 Ma Lin going shakehand on that smash :O Very clever.
Hector Brown he was penholding during the smash
Larry Shrekker no, he clearly wasn't
Krizbi he was doing a penhold smash, it's bright as day. professionals will rarely ever switch grips

Forgot to mention, you can even see the motion of him switching from PH to SH
Creativity, technique and fight spirit to the highest level
Two penholders = light-speed footwork. What an incredible match. Rarely seen these days as people rely more on BH rallies.
Dan lancar kembali serangan dg lawan kikia
7:43 xu xin´s top spin is so nice :)
The degree of difficult techniques displayed here will probably never be seen again in today's table tennis.
I guess what I'm saying is we likely won't see another penhold with techniques like Ma Lin or Xu Xin.
3:16 Why Xu Xin stopped playing like this? It's not every time you need to backhand topspin, sometimes you can use the push (shoto), even finalize with it, just like Ma lin.
Alan Gonçalves Pinheiro it may need a bit more time, judgement and adjustment to hit the ball like this, compared with the common 'make spin' style

Xu Xin has an amazing sidespin backhand shot. I love it!!

Nothing beats a good match between two crafty penholders :)
One of the highest quality table tennis displayed here
I was with Ma Lin during the whole game
The best penhold vs penhold match is a 1983 WTTC semi between Guo Yue Hua and Jiang Jia Liang. Guo the looper and Jiang the hitter.
Xu Xin is the octopus while Ma Lin is the honey badger. One could recover any shot while the other could initiate any nasty short attack. Amazing match!
best penhold clash so far

two of the best penhold players! 😃
I cant find any numbers but xu xin has some freaky long arms for his size... He's reaching shotsnoff the side of the table like its nothing
Insane speed and power, as if in a thrilling action movie!
im still mesmerised with the level shown here. Xu Xin went for imposible counter attacks.

Ma Lin still use so much penhold backhand shoto. This is the transition for the latter chinese penhold style like wang hao, which is superior.

Legend vs legend
Why does xu xin use so much traditional bh in this match?
This game was played in 2010 !!
xu xin has improved since that
in 2010, he didnt have training with wang hao. he does now wich is why his RBH got so much better
