Hands down the most informative, non-biased, easy-to-understand instructional video on the three types of Chlorine Alternatives. This video describes what each one does and does not, and accurately / honestly offers the pros and cons of each type of system. I have to give kudos to Above Ground Pros as they offered great information to the general public.
I just came across this as we are about to install an intex ultra frame pool (our first home pool ever), the info is amazing, so far the best explanation of alternate chlorination methods I came across!
Been in the pool maintenance for over 40 years this is a knowledgeable man. I also sell alternative systems but you must maintain a .5-1ppm chlorine level for them to work. City water is usually about .5. Uv and ozone are great at breaking down chloramines
this is by far the most informative detailed video explain each one of the systems in the wonderful organized fashion. the person explaining everything was absolutely pure perfection. I only have one question I am building a large 25 foot waterfall going into a large swimming pool and I would like to go with the ozone generator is that a good choice?
Chad thank you for sharing such great information. I'm looking at purchasing a DB pool and they have an Ozone generator as an option as well as a Pool Frog Dual. I had a saltwater fish tank for many years and the debate to use Ozone or not goes on and on with nothing definite. It looks like it has many advantages in pool usage, so now I just need to see if the pro's outweigh what the cost might be. I'm still waiting for a quote. I think I've watched 10 of your video's just today and have learned so much. I'm doing the same thing with my pool as I did with setting up my SW fish tank, research, research and research some more. Thanks again!
Sad part is that most municipalities are switching to a chloramine based disinfecting system for our water. Seems to be going backwards from what the pool industry is trying to avoid. Another very informative and interesting video. Thank you!
Insanely great video. What about combining two of these methods…ionizer and O3 so you can eliminate all chlorine? Can O3 be used as the supplemental oxidizing agent needed when using an ionizer?
Thanks for this video..very informative info….since we only can use our pool for 3 months and it is a steel pool I will continue to use standard chlorine ..even though prices are through the roof it still will work best for me..
Good info. Some I already knew, some I didn't. The repitition got on my nerves 1-2 times would be fine for me. I realize some people need to hear things 4-6 times before it sinks in. You answered my question about a salt system on a stock tank pool (galvanized steel). There is another youtuber showing how to install one on a stock tank. I guess he'll be replacing his pool in about 5 years. Thanks for the info!
Great video. Easy to understand everything. One question though: Would it make any sense to add an ionizer or an ozone generator to a saltwater system?
Thanks for a great video!!! Do the ozone generators make the pool water more sparkly looking? If you were choosing a system, what would you choose -- chlorine, chlorine with either an ionizer or ozone generator, or a salt system? And why?
Great Question! I would LOVE to hear his opinion! I have very high positive stance for him as looked around at other videos and NOTHING compare to quality and Quantity of information he gives and breaks it down that it’s Siri understanding
ok you answered my question from your other vidio. steel and salt ill be buying a new pool in accouple years frame is steel so yea makes sence. thanks. just hate to think of the all resine pool. im already 54 by the time my pool fals apart i may not even wont a pool anymore. so do i salt or leave it alone. dam you really gave me something to think about. great vidio
i bought a cheap intex salt water generator 129.00 at walmart, bags of salt are around 5 dollars each. so i spend much less with salt than i was with chlorine, and the water is much smoother with salt.
if you had an above ground pool, which system would you personally use??? love the video. very detailed and great information. I'm thinking that the one with the least amount of maintenance would be the salt water..
Great training video. Quick question: I am going from salt system to the ionizer system, will the salt in the water cause premature failure to the electrodes? If so, should I reduce the salt content by draining some of the water, let's say half, and refilling the pool to normal level? Thanks for the help.
Thanks so much for your informative symposium! We are favoring the ozone system. So we have a couple questions: In our desert location (Las Vegas), we have a stubborn problem with 'mustard algae' - a free-floating yellowish algae that clings to walls. As such, it wouldn't be exposed to the ozone. Do we then rely upon the level of chlorine to suppress the algae, or do we add a copper/silver algaecide? ALSO, where would the generator be positioned in the system? We understand the ozone molecule is extremely reactive, so if would it damage cartridge filter pleats if mounted after the pump? Similarly, is there risk of damage to PVC piping and valves if mounted downstream? Perhaps it's best mounted upstream of all equipment, on the supply line from the pool? Your comments appreciated, THANKS so much for your contribution!!
+Brian H Vedder to prevent mustard algae I would highly recommend you use a mustard algaecide like you spoke of as a weekly preventive. That would be good enough. You would want the ozone hooked up as the last thing in the system right before the water goes back into the pool.
Very informative thank you. Your explanations are excellent! Would you please explain how Baquacil chemical pros and cons and how it compares to the other systems? My local pool distributor deals with this chemical as a chlorine alternative. Thanks
Hello! I made myself an floating ioniser with a solar panel and 2 copper pipes, seems to work great but how do I test my copper level and how do I control my pH? Thank you very much
Hey chad. Great explanation. This methods could be combined? Like a salt system + ozone generator. I was thinking about ozone would be removing the salt or chlorine with the reaction hapenning together in the same pipe...
Yes ---I have a salt water pool and a solar ionizer and I only run my pump about 3 hours a day and have salt set on 25%. this saves a bunch on my electric cost. My pool water is like a glass of water. the pool stays clean. Bob
About the Ozone section, I see there is an Oxygen pool system ad and it seems like its adding that directly in the pool. They show a jet streaming into the pool. Is that safe? It seems somewhat contrary to what you said. Whats your take on that?
You hope this helps out? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! My only quibble is with the statement that salt systems don't raise pH levels. As an owner of one, I can emphatically say that they absolutely do raise pH levels. You definitely have to regularly add dry acid or muriatic acid to bring pH levels down.
Hi, great video. We live in FL looking for above ground pool. Any recommendations as to brand? I am thinking of a salt system. Don’t know anything about pools! Will be looking next a your academy- ty for info!
Thanks for this vid Chad :) I am in Ireland but after searching for an alternative came across this great video. I have a Bestway Summer Escapes pool with the frames and I think you call it resin, not sure of the material to be honest :o I bought my pool for my 4 Bichon (dogs) to use with me but I am very wary of using Chlorine, is there a good alternative that will be safe for them?
@@abovegroundpros Wouldn't the use of an ionizer and an ozone generator cover each others weak spots (sweat, oils, etc) eliminating altogether the need for chlorine?
Salt (sodium chloride) just temporarily donates its Chlorine to the Hypochlorite that kills the overgrowth and then turns back into regular salt. The electro-lysis is how electricity separates (lysis = part goes to positive electrode & part goes to negative electrode) the salt's sodium from its chlorine enough to let the desired hypochlorite form. Because the salt mostly gets recycled, it lasts a long time. The surfaces that get electrified do slowly crud up though, so ones you can clean will save you frequently* replacing cartridges that keep the electric surfaces sealed up (just make sure the electricity is off before cleaning the electrolysis surfaces). When cleaning the electrolysis cell isn't enough, that usually means the crudded surfaces have degraded (they all do eventually), so the life- expectancy will depend on how thick the original electrode surfaces were. They're generally titanium, but that's usually a coating (not solid), so figure out how thick that coating is.
Very good video information !! This video help and convince my client to buy our industrial 80G ozone generators for big pool . Video demo are also available on our Chanel . Thank you for your good work!
They would konflic with each other so you don't want to do that. For instance salt in a salt system would damage the core of an ionizer and the copper content in the pool for the ionizer would affect the ozone.
has anyone investigated iodine (another halide, like chlorine and bromine) as a health alternative? iodine was historically used as a drinking water purification. iodine is also still used to treat wounds and in surgery, and these days most of us are iodine deficient, so a dip in the pool would be like a supplement treatment :) If very little chlorine is required, perhaps iodine becomes affordable ?

This guy is a wealth of information. Thank you for educating me at the age of 60 as I will be spending 75,000 on an in ground pool.
Good luck with that pool..hope you have it and enjoying it
Merci pour la vidéo! La plus explicative que j'ai trouvé. Très bien expliqué.

Awesome brother! Very informative and mostly I like your style
Very educational - thank you! Just wondering why you didn't cover bromine as well.
Amazing video. You probably saved me several hundred dollars. Bravo!
Damn, GREAT TALK. I wish you could have given us the startup speech when we opened our salt pool 13 years ago.
Wow, this video and information and how you tell and show it... Amazing, seriously!
Very nice work. Thanks for putting this together so well. You are very professional and very clear about each item. Wonderful. Totally worth watching
highly recommend ozone and ultraviolet light systems. Best feeling water avaliable
Care to mention any specific BRANDS AND MODELS? (its a jungle out here!)

What are your thoughts on using an Ionizer and ozone system, such as the Clearwater RC-50 and OZ-50 with a Hayward automatic chemical feeder?
Very informative thank you for taking the time to make this video
Awesome information . Thanks.
Hello! I made myself an floating ioniser with a solar panel and 2 copper pipes, seems to work great but how do I test my copper level and how do I control my pH? Thank you very much
You'll have to get a copper test kit and any normal test kit will test your pH for you.
Very informative and will help me make my decision
So what system today, in 2021, would you recommend for a new construction in-ground pool? Traditional Chlorine? Salt? UV/Ozone?
Excellent explanation of the various options, thanks Chad!
Thanks for that information, if it was your pool, what would you use?
Salt
What system would you use with a fibreglass pool
which ozone generator is recommended
Any comments on uv light systems?
Is PERFECT: All the answers you need (pools water treatment related) in one place
Hey chad. Great explanation. This methods could be combined? Like a salt system + ozone generator. I was thinking about ozone would be removing the salt or chlorine with the reaction hapenning together in the same pipe...
Oh and if yes. It will worth it to be combined?
Using just one of them woould reduce chlorine use so greatly, that combining the two would not make a huge difference.

Look around for Baquacil. That doesnt use chlorine at all.
Hi Chad that was great thank you for sharing your knowledge. Could you share some info in the Oxymatic systems for me please . Thank you
Would the same 1.5 times a day circulation of the pool water by the filter with ozone generator also apply to an in-ground pool?
I think you should make a new video a part 2 for now
Excellent info.
Thank you!
what is a good ozone generator
very good information
Does adding a uv light to any or all of these systems...aid or help me ? Tks, enjoyed ^open discussion ^ of alts ...
I think your chlorine level would be so low with these systems that it wouldnt give you much of a difference to add it.
THANK YOU
Is it possible to use these systems in conjunction with one another?
There would be no purpose to it.

Why does an Ozone generator require 1ppm of chlorine while salt and ionizer systems require only 0.5ppm??

my alternitive is nothing just water
Baquacil
Sometimes very repititive. He said 5 times that salt systems require a pool designed for it
