  • American jazz pianist Jason Moran, who composed music for the films Selma and 13th, performs "Carolina Shout" LIVE at the Kennedy Center.
    Part of:
Two Wings: The Music of Black America in Migration
Filmed live on Sunday, April 14, 2019 @ 8:00 PM
Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz Jason Moran and mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran’s deeply personal new concert experience examines the Great Migration-the major demographic shift following emancipation in which millions of African Americans left their homes in the South for the North, West, and beyond. These men and women brought their unique musical tastes and awareness with them, as well as new concepts of instrumental excellence with African American rhythms.

I like this....but when I click the 'like' icon, it takes me to a google page instead of letting the like be counted...mmmm.
So as not to be misled, always ask: 'who, what, when, where, why, who told you that, are you willing to put that in writing (if defamatory) and how' to minimize the effect of deceit. Being right makes everyone happy; being happy must have some roots in truth or there is no peace for anyone.

I Love the Kennedy Center because of nights like this. It was elegant and full of jaw dropping talent. Being in a room where "IT" happens; JAZZ in all definitions. It was a wonderful gift. Thank you!

I like how he starts slower and ramps up with intesity! Although he never gets to the "cutting" speed tho I'm sure he could. Great interpretation!

Forget what I said about "cuttng" speed.

@@bobbymobay Personally I don't like this version but speed is not the reason. Both James P. Johnson and Willie The Lion Smith played Carolina Shout in many different ways including at a slow pace and no-one could suspect these two of lacking in the "cutting" department ;)

And here I was happy to see how great musicians tackle the marvel of stride music, but it turns out that if you strip stride from its playful syncopations, rich melodies and simplify its full chords left hand you will simply not achieve any swing at all.

Amateurish rendition. Cannot believe this is the Kennedy Center. Ahmad Jamal is a jazz great, as is Keith and Chick and Herbie and Dick Hymen. This is a joke.
