You might want to listen to the score/piano roll once again, you can do much better! Without the precise left hand it does not make much sense I am afraid. Speeding up all the time does not help at all. We have too many of this kind of “stride” pianists in Europe, some actually better. Don’t support the stereotype that Stride was about speed and blistering figurations. James P was about form, laid back groove, subtle articulation and dignity all of which are in peril in this sloppy rendition of his seminal composition.
Unless I'm mistaken, the sloppiness you're referring to is actually innovation. It's more modern syncopation and such. I don't hear any technical sloppiness and this isn't a transcription so there isn't a score for him to check
@@ethanmulvihill7177 this piece was published, like an Intermezzo by Brahms, by the composer as little known piano score, but also lead sheet, piano rolls, recordings. Hence-and because it yields the best results-I assume the same standards of werktreue apply here, even though the publication of African American music is impeded by racist structures to this day and the reconstruction of the actual music is more difficult. On the other hand we would be delighted if we had piano rolls by Haydn. Everybody learned the piece as it was written (or via Johnsons rolls), Johnson himself, Waller, Ellington etc etc. and today we need to be careful to base our interpretation on the best sources not on whims; that is the respectful thing to do.
I can garantee you he knows the original for shure! He played in front of me Maple leaf rag as played by Jelly Roll Morton, so we can be safe with Emmett, he did his homeworks ;)
So good it makes me want to.....shout 💖
Great execution of this tricky J.P. Johnson piece. 👌Wishing you a truly wonderful Tour.

What just happened?😅
More like 'Carolina Relax' rather than 'Carolina Shout'.
Nice try, but a pale shadow of Fats Waller's version.

Your lack of chill is astounding, man.
