Winifred Atwell's arrangement of The Black & White Rag. PLEASE NOTE - MICHAEL SANDS DOES NOT OWN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS SONG AND IS UNABLE TO SUPPLY IT.
I recently experienced just how difficult this version is by putting it on youtube and you do a fantastic job. If you can smile and wink at the same time you have got it made Jace
truely brilliant. i have wini's version of the sheet music for this (as you played it), and am trying to learn it (i played the george botsford original version ok-ish, but wini's version is better !), you are an inspiration and more. love it.
Thanks for the comment- I'm glad you enjoyed my performance! To be called "amazing" is every pianists dream and I thankyou for saying it! Do you really think I'd ever stop playing?!!
Thanks for such a flattering comment! I learnt from the age of 6 and finished when i was 18 (passing classical grade 8 with a distinction i'm always proud to say!). I love to play the ragtime music and think Winifred Atwell was the best pianist the world has known. To have someone say i play like her is a great confidence boost and thanks again!
Thankyou! Glad you liked my performance! This kind of music sounds better on an out of tune piano..but it isnt a requirement- just suites it quite well!
Thank you SO much! I'm awfully happy to watch your outstanding vids. I LOVE this music (have this CD of Winnifred Atwell) Keep playing and keep posting these wonderfull videos, please.
Well Played My Man!!! I remember this tune from the BBC Micro game "Repton", which sent chills down my spine while I was playing it! (the game, not the piano!)
What a great old piano you have there. You can't tune a piano to sound like that...it's something that comes with age. I once heard that Winnie Atwell searched London and district before she finally found one in a pub that sounded just right and it went everywhere with her. You may never equal Winnie...but you come damned close!
Michael - I've saved all your videos to a playlist and enjoy them over and over. There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. The music is good; your interpretation is fantastic; and the quality of recording is very professional. I'm keeping an eye out for the CD!
yes I did...I tried to reply but my computer is having trouble! Will respond when the problem has been sorted..thanks for the comments though- much appreciated!
What a charming memory to carry with you- a testament to Winnie's warm and generous personality that captured the hearts of all who met her. Thanks for you kind comment re my performance- i do hope you enjoy my next uplaods due in september!
What a lovely thing to say- I'm very flattered thankyou! I'm playing at the Blackpool Opera House in a couple of months so keep a look out on my profile page for details!
Thanks for such a motivating comment!! I intend to up-load more as soon as i can! Glad you enjoyed my performance- and i hope you keep watching and enjoying!
Mr. Sands ,how long does it take to play music like that ,on that level? I am playing piano since two years and i want to play like you ,so ,how long does you need for one of that songs?
Yes I am really playing! I wouldnt be sad enough to pretend to play on a live website haha!! Thankyou for your comment..I'm very pleased you like my performance.
i've just bought myself this song...i love it! you are on my favourites. lol. you also done the charleston...where did you find the music from for that? i can't find it anywhere!
I thought I would never again hear such accomplished playing on the piano. Michael Sands simply is the best pianist around today. His style is effortless, his interpretation flawless and his technique is simply unbelievable.
Stunning !!!......my daughter and her friend won a big tap dancing duet competition using Black and White Rag for the routine and I fell in love with the tune(as well as their performance) as a result....to see the music perormed like this is amazing......keep going my friend you are a star !!
Bloody brilliant mate!!! Playing a piano is like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time- damn near impossible!!! You make it look so easy... :)
Been playing this repeatedly for a while now, and still amazed how good it is. If I don't actually watch while it is playing - I am convinced it is Winnie Atwell!
Thankyou for your comment- I'm pleased that you feel my Performance is flowing etc. The Album of Rags are very deceiving as they say " the original arrangement" not "Atwell Arrangement"!! Keep a check on the internet (in particular ebay) as now and again copies of her original arrangements come up for auction.
I wish I was a music student! I learnt from the age of six and passed Grade 8 with distinction by the age of 18. I play entirely for pleasure now...although I'd love to play for a career one day! Thanks for your comment- its very much appreciated!
Flawless performance! Would be good if you could find a better setup to record. A more acoustic room with better placement of a good quality microphone. The setup does not do justice for your grand performance.
I think the secret to the sound is taking the front off. An upright sounds radically different when you open it up, and that extra "bite" IS the ragtime sound. BTW, I LOVE the way you play this! To say it's perfect would NOT be exaggerating. Moosie
amazing! that really is a great song played by a top notch pianist, well done! super great ragtime tune, that will never loose its quirky sound! especially when played so well! 10 out of 10!!!!!! :-))
As has been said, that was magnificent. I have been playing from svratch for 16 months and have been struggling with the trio sections in may of the joplin greats. I hope to God I can eventually be half as good as you.Brilliant!
Future generations, thank you to humans like you, will be able to enjoy this fantastic music. Thank you for the present and future generations. You make today an special day for me!
Thank you for a magnificent re-reation of this favourite number. It was brilliant! And boy do I envy your ability to play by ear. Myself, I'm hopeless without the dots. Thanks again! :-)
It is intersesting to note that out out of all the Winnie recordings released all these years only one (that I am aware of) actually credits her version as "Botsford arr Atwell). All the rest simply credit George Botsford as the composer even though it's her version. Might explain some of the confusion.
Did you receive my email? You deserve all the credit you get-and yes I will agree; Winnie was and still is the best pianist the world will ever know best wishes.
And who on Earth are the 21 people that can possibly "dislike" this?
WoW, you look like you are having a ball. You made my day. Can't wait to hear the rest. Nice smile bet all the girls are running after you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Please keep watching!
This guy is absolutely amazing, undoubtedly the best version and the best piano player on the tube or any where.
I recently experienced just how difficult this version is by putting it on youtube and you do a fantastic job. If you can smile and wink at the same time you have got it made
Jace
Brilliant playing and I love your piano. You ought to do arrangements of your own and record.
ohhh i am so glad Zipster sent me here i love it u have a new subscriber! i love ragtime music! bravo!
The smile at the end sez it all, he enjoys it as much as us!! :)
This guy is fantastic
I sure you would garner Winnie's approval if she was still with us.
truely brilliant. i have wini's version of the sheet music for this (as you played it), and am trying to learn it (i played the george botsford original version ok-ish, but wini's version is better !), you are an inspiration and more. love it.
Amazing performance. May I ask what kind of piano that may be?
Awesome job
bourré de talent !!
j'adore !
wow
fantastic
Thanks!
Well-played!
Wow your left hand doesn't hurt!?
The best version I've seen since winifred herself. just amazing
Thanks for the comment- I'm glad you enjoyed my performance! To be called "amazing" is every pianists dream and I thankyou for saying it! Do you really think I'd ever stop playing?!!
That rendition young man, is so faithful to the original record I had, absolutely BRILLIANT!!!! loved your version.
This was my favourite song to play on my grandparents pianola as a kid :) still love it!! 👍 🎹😁
Thankyou..I'm so glad you feel I am a worthy tribute to the "Queen of the Keyboard herself"!!
can almost see Ray Reardon chalking his cue!!
Thankyou- I am 21yrs old and have played all my life (mostly by ear). I'm so glad you enjoy my music!
Thankyou! Glad you liked my performance!
This kind of music sounds better on an out of tune piano..but it isnt a requirement- just suites it quite well!
Thank you SO much! I'm awfully happy to watch your outstanding vids. I LOVE this music
(have this CD of Winnifred Atwell)
Keep playing and keep posting these wonderfull videos, please.
I love how relaxed he looks. Like it's just the simplest thing ever. And I love ragtime. Great video!
I learnt from sheet music initially- now play from memory always
I love how you play a full chord at 1:48. It's usually just the single note (or octave on it) but the full chord is cool.
Fantastic!
You're only a wink and grin away from surpassing Winifred herself.
Keep em coming
I bought the sheet music- although I've always prefered to play from memory. Glad you like it!
I don't think I can state enough how brilliant this
Micheal thank you for this music...its lovely to see its kept going you are a wonderful player....fabulous...
Thank you- I'm very flattered that you have my playing on your favouries.
Try ebay for charleston as its been out of print for years.
Dude.. holy shit !
I was just listening to Atwells record.. and then I randomly searched on youtube.
Your version is flawless.. It's beyond believe !
Well Played My Man!!!
I remember this tune from the BBC Micro game "Repton", which sent chills down my spine while I was playing it! (the game, not the piano!)
Winnie is smiling somewhere.
What a great old piano you have there. You can't tune a piano to sound like that...it's something that comes with age. I once heard that Winnie Atwell searched London and district before she finally found one in a pub that sounded just right and it went everywhere with her. You may never equal Winnie...but you come damned close!
All in good time! Its difficult to find time to record when you work in an office Mon-Fri!
Wow! Uncanny! If I wasn't watching I would swear that it was Winnie herself on her 'other' piano! Brilliant job.
This is a great piece and you play it exactly the way it's supposed to be played. 5 stars!:)
After seeing this played at a concert, I resolved to find it, and after seeing this, I resolved to learn it.
O...M...G!
A love for piano playing, a love for ragtime....and many hours of practice!!
What a great player! Sounds just like Winifred! Can't wait to see and hear what he's posting next for us. Want a CD to play in the car!
Oh, WOW! Thank you Zipster08 for sending me to hear this phenomenal ragtime pianist! kingofthekeyboard you are MARVELOUS!
Thankyou so much for your comment- I'm very pleased that you feel I am a worthy artist to pay tribut to "The Queen of the Keyboard".
What a charming memory to carry with you- a testament to Winnie's warm and generous personality that captured the hearts of all who met her.
Thanks for you kind comment re my performance- i do hope you enjoy my next uplaods due in september!
Incredible, incredible. Way to keep the music alive. So delightful.
What a lovely thing to say- I'm very flattered thankyou! I'm playing at the Blackpool Opera House in a couple of months so keep a look out on my profile page for details!

Oh yeah, *****, it's just impossible to "dislike" this!!! Perhaps the 21 people who did this are just jealous... ;-)
Yes I am really playing! I wouldnt be sad enough to pretend to play on a live website haha!! Thankyou for your comment..I'm very pleased you like my performance.
say, I would love to hear you play the Maple Leaf Rag
tHANK YOU for posting this delightful share...!!!
i've just bought myself this song...i love it! you are on my favourites. lol. you also done the charleston...where did you find the music from for that? i can't find it anywhere!
Haha! Thanks for the compliment..I like to try to re-capture the feel that Winifred herself intended the piece to have..glad you enjoyed it!
Nearly the same as my '78 of Winnie pounding her Other Piano. Here there is none of the surface noise of a shellac 78rpm record.
I thought I would never again hear such accomplished playing on the piano. Michael Sands simply is the best pianist around today. His style is effortless, his interpretation flawless and his technique is simply unbelievable.
You Sir. Are a genius. Wonderful.
I would give anything to be able to sit down & just play something like that.
The true definition of AWESOME.
Stunning !!!......my daughter and her friend won a big tap dancing duet competition using Black and White Rag for the routine and I fell in love with the tune(as well as their performance) as a result....to see the music perormed like this is amazing......keep going my friend you are a star !!
What a charming message- thankyou! I too am a big fan of Jo Ann Castle and I'm pleased you think I am a good pianist aswell!
Bloody brilliant mate!!! Playing a piano is like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time- damn near impossible!!! You make it look so easy... :)
And yet another shining example of musical excellence. Love the smile.
hard and noisy ^^ that's the way i like it :D no seriously that was an awesome vid!
Thankyou! I'm so pleased you enjoyed my performance. My piano is a 70 yr old "Gerhard"!
Been playing this repeatedly for a while now, and still amazed how good it is. If I don't actually watch while it is playing - I am convinced it is Winnie Atwell!
Very good mate well done
Thankyou for your comment- I'm pleased that you feel my Performance is flowing etc.

you are amazing ive never seen anything so brilliant i can go to sleep happy now after hearing your sweet song
I wish you well in mastering the piece- let me know how it goes!
Thankyou..I try to re-create Winifred's style as much as possible as all my videos are a dedication to her great talent.
It made in 2007 they may not have go cameras.
Thanks for your comment. I'm so pleased you enjoyed my performance and also the sound of my old upright piano!
Thankyou! I'm very pleased you enjoy my music. I will be uploading more videos as soon as time permits!
woot i love this! I'm going to download and play this! :D
I think the secret to the sound is taking the front off. An upright sounds radically different when you open it up, and that extra "bite" IS the ragtime sound.
BTW, I LOVE the way you play this! To say it's perfect would NOT be exaggerating.
Moosie
If you did that you'd never again hear Winfred Atwell playing the Piano in eternity because talent like his is only found in Heaven!
This is one of my favourite piano rags and you play it brilliantly. Thank you.
BRILLIANT!! I am in awe. My eyes are popping out in amazement, that was faultless!
Truly amazing
A very talented young man an absolute pleasure to listen too, keep it up boss :)
Wow! It's really fun to watch, you play perfect!
amazing! that really is a great song played by a top notch pianist, well done! super great ragtime tune, that will never loose its quirky sound! especially when played so well! 10 out of 10!!!!!! :-))
This kid is just to good, what else can you say.
As has been said, that was magnificent. I have been playing from svratch for 16 months and have been struggling with the trio sections in may of the joplin greats. I hope to God I can eventually be half as good as you.Brilliant!

I am very flattered by your lovely comment. It thrills me to know that you (aswell as other people) enjoy my performances. Thankyou very much.
Thank you for a magnificent re-reation of this favourite number. It was brilliant! And boy do I envy your ability to play by ear. Myself, I'm hopeless without the dots.
Thanks again! :-)

Fantastic, nicely done. I played that one for years, could never get it quite that good. Great piano to play it on too!
ugh. I love this. Play this to me and I'll marry you any day.
damn it nice and fast :)
and of course: zipster sent me
What brilliant fun you must have had playing that! Great playing!! Thank you!
Did you receive my email? You deserve all the credit you get-and yes I will agree; Winnie was and still is the best pianist the world will ever know best wishes.
