  • The NX Class was the first deep space explorer created by Starfleet in the 22nd Century before the Untied Federation of Planets existed. The Enterprise NX-01 was a pioneering vessel for many future technologies of Starfleet and would be the foundational vessel of Earth and warp design with its Cochrane Archer Warp 5 Core.

      There is a history of naval ships fighting above their weight class and coming ahead just by daring, attitude, and willing to risk it all to win.

    My favourite thing about the NX-01 is that it’s sort of named after itself. In universe, it was named after the space shuttle, then the NCC-1701 was named after it, but in reality, the space shuttle was named after the NCC-1701. Its a closed loop, and I love it!

    I find rather delicious the in-universe canon that the ship was named after the first shuttle (and subsequent vessels in the NX line were to follow the same convention) given the the first shuttle was named after Kirk's Enterprise following a fan campaign.

    The NX01 is one of my favourite ships, it’s just so on the edge of what humanity is capable of. When it’s pushed to 5.2 absolutely everything is shaking and the injectors catch of fire. Yeah, it was nice to see a Trek ship that looked like we could almost build it today, it gave the series great verisimilitude. If we could work out how to power a flight to and from the asteroid belt in a reasonable amount of time then I reckon we would build something very much like the NX-01 to mine those asteroids for their bounty of rare materials.

      I kind of agree, but how do we feel about it having a sharper saucer rim than the 'later' Constitution class. Does this look too futuristic (like other 90s-00s show craft) or are there reasonable explanations for it?

    • @wolfpack_104
      @wolfpack_104 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@originaluddite Not necessarily. The NX class prioritized function over form whereas The Golden era of Exploration (TOS/TNG eras) placed an equal amount of emphasis on ship aesthetics, both in their sleeker exteriors and interiors. It wasn't until the Dominion war and the attack of Utopia Planetia that they reverted back to more streamlined vessels

    • @originaluddite

    Yes! More! I get that people don't like the show (personally I find it mediocre, but interesting at times. Though Season 4 is one of the best Star Trek Seasons of all time IMO - feels a bit like a separate beast from Seasons 1-3 though), but the ship itself is a gem. More. Moar. "Differently spelled words for 'we need more videos on this' ".
    Also, I can't wait for another main story line STO episode. I wish they would create a possibility of being captain of like 3rd NX ship, or even Deadalus one during those years as an intro and background to new characters. Like they did for OG Star Trek. Take some part in Earth-Romulan War. Or maybe slightly later, first years of federation and you could serve on soon to be decommissioned NX-01 (as first officer - as usual). Separate from Archer's Gold Crew and strictly for decommissioning purposes. But then you're needed - and we all know how it goes.
    Sorry geeking out, thinking of possibilities. Would be fun if we could see whole technological development of Starfleet and play some good game spanning like 250 years.

      As one of the _Akiraprise_ fist-shakers, I don't think *we* doomed the show. I think the *contrived plots* and *poor treatment of the characters* doomed the show.
      Literally 2/3 of the episodes across *all four seasons* can be summed up by some combination of:
      1. Archer yells at someone, then punches or shoots someone
      2. Something horrible (likely in a sexual way) happens to T'Pol
      3. Reed trucks something up.
      If they hadn't done the Temporal Cold War, if the show's _big war arc_ had been against the *Romulans,* and if Mayweather, Hoshi and (let's face it) Shran had gotten more screentime, I think it could have gone for _seven._

    Humanity, coming out of a devastating WW3, stepping into a sector rife with political conflicts and the ever-looming threat of klingon aggression, while the romulans pull their strings from the shadows. Starfleet was pretty much forced to speed-run the tech tree in order to not become a casualty in various border conflicts.
    One thing, I am not sure if the Deadalus-class came before NX. There seem to be conflicting sources and since it is a bigger ship (thus overall resource investment), I would put first appearance after NX. Going purely by technology and design lineage, I would think of it as Starfleets first 'workhorse' line of vessel built around the great success of the Warp 5 project.

    There are many reasons why the NX-Class is my favourite, but its absolute refusal to say 'die' is one of them. The fact that the Enterprise could keep flying after the Battle of Azati Prime is incredible, let alone enter more battles, fly into a gravitic anomaly while overloading its deflector, and _then_ not only continue to fly for an extended period in an atmosphere, but fight against technology developed by aliens centuries more advanced in said atmosphere.
    They, and the crews that flew them, defined the phrase "where there's a will, there's a way."

    The NX-01 is my favorite Star Trek ship. I remember watching the show and thought the slimmed down look of just the saucer and nacelles was such a cool profile. If I remember, the NX-01 had plasma cannons that were under powered so they installed the phase cannons but wired it wrong (because Trip didn't have all the instructions?) and actually made it more powerful. My only complaint at the time was I thought the ship shouldn't have had a transporter in the 1st season. It should have been a later upgrade like the cannons.

    The NX Class started from my Ramizo grandmother's during the 1970s Cold War. I had many Star Trek ships too. The Delta flyer was mine. I was the one making the Star Trek TV series, except TOS.
    Nations should not annihilate each other. We need space techs and space ships, which already happened during Star Wars and Star Trek wars in the 1970s. So I think a few remaining advanced groups maintained their space techs and still have their Star Trek ships now, just CLASSIFIED.

    One small interjection. Doug Drexler corrected the NX class name the other day as the Enterprise class. Paraphrasing his words, the precedent that each class is named after the first ship built has been set long before Star Trek and they were following it.

    Although the show itself does have many issues I really wished it continued purely so we could witness the NX-01 come closer and closer to actual completion.
    Of course... one other thing I did like about this show is that comparitevly to things like the enterprise d or e the NX-01 constantly felt as if it was in danger (needing to go into catwalks to bypass dangerous areas, needing to be careful of weapon yeilds due to having no shields, needing to use shuttles to get to other ships or to planets surfaces when the conditions werent perfect due to the distrust or fiddlyness of transporters, which also involved needing to evacuate the launch bay because there wasnt just a permanent air shield, needing to be careful of its diplomatic relations else risk an unprepared Earth being attacked... I mean had the federation been established I doubt the Xindi probe would have worked) which overall gave the show a decent amount of tension... just wish it had been executed that little bit better... and that the higher ups hadn't axed it.

    This thing was over built. In some was it is more durable than later ships like the D and Defiant. Oh, I can feel the replies. To clarify, the power conduits of the NX can handle much higher loads compared to its warp core output, and the amount of internal bracing is insane. Later ships are more efficient with their design and use of recourses. The NX was not. It is a mass of overbuilt space steel. Can it hurt you with its pop guns, not really, but it will take more than you think to destroy it. After all not may ships can survive a tri-cobalt mine.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      No structural integrity fields to help, so it makes sense to overbuild it. Even when all the power is gone it still has its strength. I do think that’s a lot more sensible even after they’re an option tbh.

    I'd love to see the full history of in and out of universe history of the NX-01. I'd also love to see what followed directly after the NX-01 ships, if that info exists. I know TOS was 50 or so years after, but between STE and TOS's Enterprise what were the other ships that paved the way.

    I have heard two different explanations for polarised hull plating; one is that it makes the plating several times harder when EM energy is passed through it and the other is the one from this video; where the EM energy acts to disperse energy weapons that strike the plating. Not sure which is the true explanation.
