    There are several war games miniature companies that make pulp figures,which would certainly work. The aptly named Pulp Figures by Bob Murch, Copplestone Castings, Artizan miniatures has a line also. 1st Corps has cars and drivers from that time period. 4Ground has miniatures and terrain/buildings. That is just a small sampling.

    Kinda cool to see how much has changed over the course of a few years in regards to Cthulhu miniatures from when you first posted this and now. 🤔

    If you’re still looking for some 1920’s miniatures, Reaper has a line for Dead Lands Noir, which takes place during the Great Depression, so 1932. Close enough to take a look at.

    There are quite a few Heroclix that fit the bill, think Kingpin, J Jonah Jameson, muggers and thugs etc. They just need to be rebased which is not difficult to do.
    That Oddjob was called Tasker Henchman and it was part of Reaper's Chronoscope line. For some reason I also own that miniature.

    Id suggest picking up mansions of madness by fantasy flight. With all the expansions you'll get tons of investigators and monsters along with tiles. Its a fun game in itself.

    That one is Yig near the end. My favorite miniature for COC is from Grenadier Champions called "Normals" There is a middle aged lady holding a book who is just so perfect as a female investigator or librarian. She rocks. It's a 3 set and there is a Dilletente looking chick and a modern lady with a boom box (sucks) that is not useful for 1920's. Another favorite is Rafm's Professor who is checking out occult tome and is also decked out with his trusty dog but I use them as different folks.

    Great collection.
    I must have about half of these lead models plus a few others for PCs and NPCs, I've clipped some old Batman and Superman heroclix from their bases (police, thugs, mobstrers, thugs, reporters, etc) they are not so off scale, for monsters I have a few old cast lead deep ones and a few D&D Lovecraft inspired monster/abominations minis plus some I've crafted myself, only one card though, now I know what to hunt for.

    Some grenadier Miniature ranges are still in production. Look for the italian company Mirliton. They do fantasy and cosmic horror stuff, look for the Nightmare category. I also like the "back of beyond" range from Copplestone Castings and the "Pulp by Bob Murch" ranges (both still in production) which have a lot of interwar, pulp, Indiana-Jones style stuff which perfectly fits Cthulhu.
    But I am from Europe, so I don´t know if these are avaible in the US.

  • @moolate127
    @moolate127 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can still get the Grenadier minis through Mirilton Miniatures including the Call of Cthulhu ones, they are just renamed now and sold individually, Cthulhu for example is called Hellbeast now. You can find them in the 'nightmares' category in their website.

  • @ethanevenson3855
    @ethanevenson3855 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just as a slight correction or aside(and I could be wrong), Grenadier miniatures are generally 15mm scale to about 20mm in modern terms. Scale is normally relative to base size and the proportions of the figure, as opposed to just the height, though some companies(gw) mess this up as well. 25mm-28mm today is called Heroic scale, and the stuff from Reaper is made to look normal on a 1 inch base. In comparison, Grenadier looks a lot closer to 15mm offerings from the Flames of War lines than anything 25+mm. Scale creep is a factor for sure, but miniatures in that era weren’t really scaled right to begin with. I actually have some modern minis in plastic that are meant to be in Grenadier scale, as well as my father’s metal minis from AD&D. They’re almost bang on at ~18mm, though the proportions of the newer models are more accurate.
    Just bringing this up because I think it’s important when talking about figure scales. If you’re super concerned about heights clashing, you can always add extra height with basing material then stick the figures to washers before painting, bringing them closer to modern Heroic.

    Hi Seth, great show. I've been GMing in the UK for over thirty years now. Can't seem to let it go. Someone has probably pointed this out, or you know already. but just in case, there is a miniature supplier on ETSY, doing 28 to 30 mm figures that are very nice (especially the lady with pistol and leather flying helmet), called Mick's Bits; just right for 20s Cthulhu I think. Just wanted to get this out there. Thanks for some great entertainment and tips (I'm still learning) - Chris

    I've been looking at the plastic Pathfinder, D&D miniatures, they have a good Gug, Moon beast, Yithian, Elder Thing and Mi-Go and a few others. They are prepainted too and only a few bucks. Also check out Heroclix for Occultist. Cut them off their Heroclix base and glue them to small wooden disc from craft store. They look decent enough.

      @Gavgoyle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the Mi-Go, Gug, Elder, and moon beast are all good. There are a several very applicable from the DreamBlade mini game that could be very applicable to CoC, as well... like the various mad scientists, zombies, skeletons, the Gutsoup Golem, Whispering Imp, Bloodsucker, and, one of my favorites of all time, the Octorilla! A gorilla with an enraged octopus as a head!

    I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the Mansions of Madness game from FFF. There are lots of nice monsters and a few investigators in the box. FFF also released a now discontinued line of prepainted monsters and investigators that are quite nice as well.

    Reaper Bones Chronoscope makes a cheap source now... And the fantasy lines have easily CoC'd minis like robed cultists, a Shoggoth, a smaller (four tiles) Cthulhu demon and a huge $40 actual Cthulhu.

  • @rodneykelly8768
    @rodneykelly8768 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is four years late, but,
    Deep Madness (Diemension Games) has Lovecraft-esc figures that could be used for deep ones.
    The Rashaar faction from the game CARNEVALE (TT Combat) has some deep ones and cultist figures.
    Horrorclix (wizkids) had a Cthulhu figure whose size would be perfect for star spawn.
    Sometimes you can find them on Ebay.
    Strange Eons (Uncle Mike’s Worldwide) has some good figures and scenery pieces, but I don’t know if they are still in business. The web site is still up.

    I had a set of old CoC minis that were the same character in 3 poses. One was the professor with book, professor looked haggard, and professor looking crazed holding a gun to his own head.
    If you want some CoC beasties, I would look at the Cthulhu Wars game. Lots of minis, and they are big and chunky for the monsters. Also you get a good game.

    • @TheSmart-CasualGamer

      Holding a GUN TO HIS HEAD? Jesus, that's a bit morbid, even for Lovecraftian legends.

    • @B.-T.
      @B.-T. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSmart-CasualGamer RAFM's approach to PC minis was to depict a slow descent into madness. The final stage was usually darkly comedic in some sense. The investigator running away with the tentacle chasing after him was one such mini with the final stage of madness.
      It's kind of a spin on the 3-Stage Player Characters fantasy minis Ral Partha did, showing an adventurer leveling up and sporting better gear as a result.

    Just looking at this, it reminded me of an easy option for a lot of the more pulp era minis for the characters that are more "normal" people rather than the pulp heroes and quite good for investigators is to look at the O scale railroad miniatures meant for setups. There's a lot of them that fit the 1920's and are extremely cheap. You might end up with a pile of multiples, but it's normally still extremely cheap (Sure, you might have 5 of each mini in the set, but you're paying something like $20 for 50 of them).

    The middle miniature at 7:27 is from Space: 1889, I think. A ship's captain. Doesn't he have a telescope in one hand and a sword on his belt? Nice painting on these. The three packs from RAFM usually were meant to be three versions of the same investigator at different points in their investigative career. I also use Matchbox Models of Yesteryear. Love em! I like the ones that are 1:48 scale personally, which also goes with the model planes I sometimes use in scenarios. I got a 1:48 scale PT boat I hope to use at some point too. Great information. Thanks.

    So nowadays we have Cthulhu Wars as a source for monsters and cultists. But if you thought the RAFM deep ones looked to much like frogs, man you will not like the Cthulhu Wars ones. (a lot of the designs, IMO, are very tryhard and lame, but some manage to be solid)
    Your Proto-Shoggoth was an old Metal Magic piece from their Dunwich Detectives range. The line is still in production by EM4 Miniatures if you ever want more investigators and monsters.

    • @SSkorkowsky
      @SSkorkowsky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My best advice is just to come up with a fun character with a personality and whatever quirks or backstory you think would be fun in the long run (some ideas are fun for 1-3 sessions but get old once the novelty wears off, so find something you believe will be long-term fun). Make sure the personality would work well with other PCs who happen to be evil. Once done, figure out what alignment fits that character. Essentially, don't start with alignment and then build a character around it, but focus on making a fun character and figure out what alignment they are.
