  • Transformation Through Moʻolelo, Mele & Hana Noʻeau, Session 2: Lei Hulu (Feather Lei) on January 27, 2021, presented by Hōkūlani Holt & Joyce Yamada
Hawaiian culture can incorporate physical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional well-being through skillful work. Hawaiian cultural practice transforms through discovery.
Gain an appreciation for and learn about yourself through moʻolelo, mele and hana noʻeau.
Session 2 - Prepare your feathers and then load the key with thread. (See Session 1, for more details: • Kaula | Transformation... )
In preparation for the lei hulu workshop, please prepare all of the feathers in your kit, keeping the first and second cuts in separate containers. The leftover feather piece, if any, may be discarded or saved to make feather flowers. Your supply packet will contain either one or two different color feathers for the flower petals and green feathers for the sepal. As you cut the feathers, keep the various colored feathers in separate containers.
When cutting the feather, snip/cut only the quill (center shaft) and not the feather. The quill is more pronounced on the back of the feather, therefore snipping from the back of the feather is usually easier.
Third arm set up - A third arm kit gives you an extra hand to hold the lei. One example is to add a barrel swivel and clip to a C-clamp attached to your worktable. You may also use string and a clip with the string tied around the end of the lei and tie the other end to something stationary, such as the back of a chair.
If you want to continue creating beautiful feather lei, a C-clamp 3rd arm may be purchased from a home improvement store
