- Is the Picasso Museum in Paris worth it? I wasn't sure how I'd like it, but the Picasso Museum is definitely worth a visit (especially if you're a huge fan of Picasso's paintings). Side note I was in Paris in May loved every single moment and already have alert on kayak to watch flights to return. I understand in some small way your love for the city. The Picasso Museum in Barcelona might be the definitive one. Shows his work from a child, where he was a realist and evolved into cubism. Jay explained that evolution and related it to his own work. We can do the same in our lives. That might be his most important lesson. After seeing his art in Madrid as well, last month, I'm a real fan.
But I'm also a big fan of Jay's, too. Loved this VLOG.
I've heard the Barcelona one is fantastic
I just read an article from last year that Claude Picasso has been asking Musee Picasso to stop lending out the artwork to other museums, including the Barcelona one. Barcelona has the collection it has because of the Paris museum! He complains that the works are too fragile to keep lending out (21 exhibits in France alone in 2018 and more this year). They've lent out 5,000 of his works which he claims are just to capitalize on the Picasso name.
You’re as ordinary as ordinary gets. Add to that your art vocabulary and knowledge are not enough to express how you feel about Picasso even if you did understand art. You’re about having fun and new experiences. Big and bright you like. Like a cave man seeing fire for the first time. You need more time and experience. It’s not always exciting bright and new. Enjoy your brew.
@@JaySwanson the architecture is medieval. When I saw his childhood sketches I said to my inner child: your childhood work is much better. I’m not the kind of man resin who would compare my childhood art to Picasso but I just did.
The big orange sculpture is by Alexander Calder. There's a show on currently at the PM which includes work by Calder.

As a self-proclaimed art nerd, I did enjoy this museum when I went in April. I also, like another viewer noted, knew the backstory with how the paintings and works were just to settle his estate and what his family wouldn't mind parting with. Picasso, like VanGogh had a very complicated and sometimes misunderstood point of view and mind overall. Whats even more interesting (and one of my favorite tidbits from my many Art History courses in college) is that MANY of his paintings are actually in layers... meaning there are paintings UNDERNEATH the paintings you see displayed. I caught myself staring at many to see if it were possible to see the underlying paintings. lol. Also, the evolution of the "Bull" lithographs were lovely and Im glad to see you appreciated them too because I remember studying those and his simplistic ability to draw a bull. Did you also see the bull video of him there? :) Thanks for the great videos as always!
Heading to Paris this weekend. You're videos have been super helpful!! We have the 'tap out' rule in my family. Visit any museum or church and after 90 minutes - if you're not into it, tap-out!

When I was young and learning about Picasso it was difficult to relate. As I get older (as an artist) I envy his ability to just go for it without much inhibition or conformity. I like that aspect, being able to be free and unconcerned as to whether the art is LIKED or even accepted, or valued. Obviously his art was well received and made him wealthy, but still controversial and confounding :) Especially liked this video!

@Yvonne: I think you've figured it out. Art is useless by definition. Whether or not someone likes it is irrelevant, so throw convention and care out the window and amaze yourself. If someone likes it, so much the better! As long as it makes you smile, c'est bon !

I had a similar experience at the Picasso - went in dutifully as a Picasso ‘meh’ guy w/wife who had a keen interest...left with a far greater appreciation. The way they have it set up and the emphasis on his progression and ‘how the sausage is made’ aspects really spoke to my creative process struggles/successes. Also walked right by Clark Dog on the way (closed 😭).

The best Picasso museum is in Barcelona. It is dedicated to his life's work. Starting from the beginning at the age of 12. At that age, he was painting in a classical way, a master before puberty. That's the museum that will make you admire the genius that he was. I was on the same boat, feeling as if his paintings were a bit narcissistic in his portrayal, but the museum in Barcelona changed all that for me. Although Paris has fantastic museums, Barcelona is incredible in its diversity and depth of collections. The Carnley's would love to be your translator and tour guide ;)

The bull was always a significant icon in his art and his life. His father had taken him to many bullfights when he was a child and his love for the sport carried o throughout his life.
My day at musée Picasso...with my art teacher friend...the only reason I went...my feet freezing from being wet from the rain...the building blew me away...and I actually liked some of his art...my art teacher friend Deb...who also follows you...was in heaven...it was worth the visit as it was just near to us....see you tomorrow...oh...and I liked musée Montmartre more!!...xx Kerrin and Leia xxx

Great memories of our time there, in April. Thank you for taking us along. The audio we rented from the front desk was a must as it really explained the works of both these men. Picasso and Calder.

When you see an artists progression it does start to make more sense. In school they stick with one period in the artists life or their most famous works. It is hard to get where an artist is coming from. So glad you gave it another try. Going from meh to ok. Yes some of his sculptures creep me out too!! 😳 Yay on the office!!! Have a Wonderful Day!!

Hi Jay, like you I'm far from Picasso's no. 1 fan (I much prefer Monet and impressionism) but I do appreciate how others may be drawn to his style.
I found it interesting when you related Picasso's evolution of style to that if your channel - I never considered that before but it makes perfect sense.

Thank you for the tour. You are correct that Picasso doesn't qualify for any humanitarian awards and he is at the same time a visual genius. What artists are gifted with is an ability to see the world differently, and it is his personal vision that is intriguing. I wanted to ask about a couple of things that I didn't see in your video on the Marais. This is where Victor Hugo lived and his home is well worth a visit. Most of us know of Hugo as a writer, but he was also a visual artist and his museum had wonderful examples of his artwork. There was also a death mask of Hugo which fascinated me. The other thing you did not mention or show is that the Marais is the location of the old Jewish Quarter and there is quite a history that accompanies that.

Love Brewdog! They were the nicest, most affordable spots (they had 2) to go to in Stockholm. Especially for food. I’ve always liked Picasso. I was introduced to him as a child and you saw what he’d most recently done through his early work. He was still alive when I was a kid. I have a few mugs with Picasso paintings on them.

Picasso is not one of my favorites either but it was good to have a look around. I tend towards the Old Masters more. My brain doesn't connect with a lot of abstract styles. Thanks, Jay.

I'm definitely in the meh camp regarding Picasso. The museum was well hung and the building itself made the 14 euros worth it. I'm glad you took us there, plus your video eye made it more interesting. The guy as you left Peloton was all spazzed out, wondering if he shouted anything. Yay for the office!!! !!!! I went to the Picasso Museum on a Friday, when it was supposed to be open, and it was closed! I walked around for about 30 minutes and came back, and it was still closed. (?)
I had the same experience. I was bummed.
The museum looked awesome but those waffles were the star of the show in my book! hahah

I went in May. If I can remember correctly, it IS covered with your museum pass. I'll be honest with you, I was a bit bored here. Very sterile environment. Made me want to take a nap.... But that's just me.

That’s the museum that was closed the entire four years I lived in Paris! 😂 Finally glad to see it in this vlog. I went to the Picasso museum in Antibes, which is super cool and I recommend highly. He had an entire period where he was working with pottery, making plates and such- I had NO idea he was into that until I went to that museum. It’s in a gorgeous building, too. So if you’re ever going down south, A) I recommend Antibes and B) I think it’s a great museum to see there. Thanks for this! 🙏🏼👍🏼✌🏼

"was it worth it"?....you might have found it more so if you actually knew that you were visiting the Calder-Picasso exhibit and that many of the sculptures in your video were created by Calder NOT Picasso. Calder-Picasso exhibit at the Picasso Museum in the Marais until August 25. Oh well, as usual and unfortunately, what's primarily worth it for you is the coffee, waffles and snacks..

I would spend DAYS there, as well as Museu Picasso in Barcelona. This is as good as it gets for me. I'm neither educated nor sophisticated, but I know what I like. Maybe he was insane, maybe he had synesthesia as some have claimed. I don't care; right out of the park. This is as close as I will ever get to transcendence.

I had the pleasure of taking a sixteen session class on Parisian art and architecture at the art institute of Chicago in 96 BEFORE visiting Paris and London.
My trip to Paris included the Rodin , Picasso d orsay , giverny , and the one with the murals. I stay at the hotel du louvre and went to the louvre. We also spent time at notes dame and sunset on the rooftop.
Picasso had a wild life with many mistresses. Perhaps because Chicago has such a wonderful collection I was educated about many styles of art.
This museum was closed for five years to renovate.
The calders were different and are all over the us.
The difference between boomers and gen x ( I’m 54 and on the border ) and your generation is at times , am absolute lack of respect and education on so many topics.
The space invader game caters to the absolute dumbing down of your generation and unfortunately my daughters . She is 21 but scored an a in Spanish art and architecture when studying in Grenada because she has a cultural
Education in art opera symphony etc.
if you are going to live in such a beautiful city with a history of these things then a little research or education to understand what you are talking about or trying to experience goes a long way.
A Calder is a Calder.
You don’t have to like Picasso. You don’t even have to like one of his periods.
But you should respect him and his colleagues work during different Times. You are also in the old Jewish neighborhood.
You could also feature the famous restaurants Picasso and his contemporaries frequented.they are still there.
I saw the Picasso exhibit at the d’Orsay museum in 2018, and I still don’t like him.
