Davenport Landing and Horseshoes North of Scotts Creek. I have friends who have been bitten at both spots. They aren't the type to allow news stories about but one of them almost died from the infection caused by the bite weeks later. I was knocked out of a kayak in October 1999 in front of our beach house in Pescadero. Only 30 feet out in about 25 feet of water. The force was scary large , I thought i hit a reef or something ..then she spyhopped me and I'll never forget that huge, fat cone coming out of the water and the black eye and my wife screaming like a banshee from the beach. My buddy at Horsehoes got spyhopped too, he thought it was a giant squid at first. I still go out but never in October.

Used to hang out on the SC pier eating and would watch a one armed guy swim to the end of it almost every day among many seals. Always expected him to lose the other arm or more any minute

You're brave. I haven't surfed since that time at Muizenberg in 1986 when this huge shadow moved underneath me and I crapped myself. Turns out it was a seal -- the bugger popped its head up next to me. ;)

This is an amazing story! I've watched a few shark specials and there is a belief that facing the shark with your board is the better position vs paddling off. Your instincts were wise. Glad you can smile, laugh and share this story.

I seen one at 4 mile too. Back in 97. It was pumping and about 30 guys out. So I said fuck it kept surfing. It was out by that left... they don't really come over to the right on a low tide I figured. Lol.

Probably surfed 1,000 sessions at the Mile over the last four decades and I can with certainty say something down there has eyeballed everyone in the lineup at least 900 of those days. And no doubt I'm batting a perfect thousand for every session north of Scott Creek and every beachbreak session from Rio del Mar to Monterey...

every time ive ever surfed 4 mile ive felt like i was being watched, that spot is just too spooky. if you walk along the cliffs t the north, directly around the corner there is a small beach where ive seen many hundreds of pup seals gathered on the sand, so i can only assume thats a breeding ground. that has to be why 4mile is so sharky

I have surfed since the late 70s in town, santa cruz, as well as north of town. Never saw a shark, however one time at Scott Creek, I was out, alone, and a surfer on shore paddled out to warn me. He said that a shark was sited at the break earlier. He then turned around and went in. I took a couple waves but could not shake the thoughts running through my head. I turned toward shore and ended my session early.

Waaay back in my day living and surfing in the Santa Cruz area my leash snapped at Four Mile on big day and sure enough the center rip current took it a couple of hundred yards out to sea. Knowing of what may lurk out there made for one the longest 15 minutes l've know.

4 mile is the safest place to surf for sharks. The inside section is very shallow. One time a bunch of dolphins busted in front of me, and I thought it was a shark.

Some might say you should not have riden the current out that way. But maybe that encounter was the Lord's way of giving you a warning. A warning that you wouldn't have gotten if you would have paddled out like normal. A fair warning that let you know continuing to surf the Wild Coast north of Santa Cruz puts you in the neighborhood of big White Sharks that are capable of taking out Elephant Seals. Fish that are less familiar with surfers, the one's that you're less likely to see near Santa Cruz.
Just south of Ano Nuevo near Greyhound Rock, I was walking on the shore near the 50 foot high bluffs. Returning to the parking lot, I saw a HUGE Bull Elephant Seal in less than 2 feet of water, with his rear flippers out of the water, resting on a rough rock shelf, and his body pointing out to sea. The bluff formed a pinch point near the shore where he was resting.
So to get back to my car, I had to walk right behind him. Instead of turning to one side or the other to watch me, that beast arched his neck straight back over on his body, looking at me with his giant head upside-down as I passed. Hmm, seemed a little crazy, something that big would be that flexible.
I'm familiar with large livestock, and this dude was at least 3 times the bulk of a 1-ton Limousine Bull. I estimated 15 feet long not counting his rear flippers. MASSIVE doesn't even come close to describing him. As he watched me pass behind him, his freak'n whiskers looked as thick as pencils.
Then it occurred to me, he wasn't sunning himself on a nice soft sandy beach. Nor did he give a schidt about a 240 pound man walking 4 feet behind him. That's when I thought of how big and bad a creature would have to be, to force his @$$ up on the rocks.
So I left him in peace and put some distance between us. I took out my binocular looking for a White Shark or an Orca. No joy.
Anyway, I am sure I'd enjoy the sensation of riding waves. But I couldn't keep my mind from bad vibes, even going out near Santa Cruz.
Nevertheless, north of Santa Cruz the water is different. Possibly too cold for the 6-7 foot juveniles you'll see at the Shark-Park off Aptos. The Wild Coast north of Santa Cruz is big shark turf.
I don't give a schidt what TV talking-heads say. Carnivores eat flesh. Sharks are carnivores that live in the ocean. If we put our flesh in the ocean, then you do the math.

Dude,,,,,, 1976 was when I got my DL. A kneeboarder. There were a lot of kneeboarders back then.
The inside bowl. Little harbor seals. They would hang on the reef. You would paddle back out and feel something brush up against you. Look down and see this little seal looking back up at you. Seen a guy in the lineup scream like a little bitch when one tugged on his bootie.

Sure fire way to not get attacked is don't go in the water. Why do people always say "sharks mistakenly ate or tasted a person"? Are they not made of flesh ?? And don't sharks eat flesh?? Being they do eat flesh and people are made of it , it seems they got it right to eat one when they do. It looks to me to be human arrogance to think that we are above the food chain. And thinking if a shark tastes us or eats one of us then it must just be a mistake. Which that thought itself is really the mistake. We all like to think that we are above all that nasty being hunted and eaten ,, but we are not.
If you want to take the risk of being tasted or eaten all the way in order to enjoy the water. Let us be clear , you are taking that risk , because you are on the menu. Thinking you're not is to lie to yourself and that is more dangerous.
We get to hear from so called shark experts (claiming they are anyway) that there's a extremely low chance of being eaten by a shark.
The lies of the likelihood of being killed by a shark is just that . A lie, making those experts , not experts at all , in math anyway. They count all the people on earth and divided by the ones bitten and killed. Not even counting the ones just bitten. Removing the people that don't go in the water from the equation (which are most of the people on earth) that number goes way up. Other lies include that "sharks don't want to eat people". Not true , people are made of flesh , and that is what they eat. If you want to take the risk as a trade off for the joy of using the water. Feel free to do that. But lies told to us and if you tell your self lies , keep in mind neither make you safer. It's your choice to choose . But humans are on the menu , for one very simple reason. People go into the water where sharks can taste and or eat them. So they do once in a while. Don't come back (if you even can) and complain you didn't know it could happen.
