I'm not Chinese and I don't speak Cantonese but as a kid in the 90s I loved watching HK movies, especially ones made by Wong Kar Wai purely for the aesthetics. They were just so beautiful and unique. You can tell some of them were influenced by what was going on in Hollywood at that time but HK filmmakers were able to create something more authentic and innovative then the Hollywood films that inspired them. It's like a student who studied a fake pretentious painting ernessly, ultimately better understanding the heart and intention it seeks to portray and ends up creating a painting the best represented it.
