  • Granger Smith Podcast Episode 165: School always seems frustrating and boring, but I can’t emphasize the importance of school enough. It’s not necessarily about the information that you’re learning, it’s about learning how to learn. Learning how to overcome challenges and navigate social dynamics. The root of the issue is that school is difficult, and that’s the reason why you want to quit. Join me as we chat about this topic and more!

Was a little shocked by the comments from the school-hating crowd, but I'd like to remind folks that education today doesn't have to look like it did when most of us were growing up. Yes, many public school systems have problems, but the stories we're hearing on the news aren't telling the whole story. They're focusing on the bad stuff because they know it gets attention. Today you have many options when pursuing education. We have charter schools, private schools, homeschooling, online schooling, and combinations of all of the above. Pursuing an education is what you make of it, just like Granger said. It is always worthwhile, and learning is something we should do for all of our lives.

Thank you Granger for your message about school. My daughter, who finds school hard, complains every morning about having to go. Some days it is a battle to get her ready and out the door. I turned this podcast on while driving her to school and it helped open up the conversation between us about why it’s important. We had a much better morning and I pray your words stick with her.

School teaches you about life. It’s about interacting with peers and instructors. You learn networking. Social skills. The educational subjects are just the foundation of new learning. If you have children you may need to help them with math, science, English. You need to finish and get your diploma. McDonalds won’t hire without a diploma. Give yourself the 2-3 years and finish. No reason to rush Spencer. Good luck.

I agree with most of the former, I disagree with the latter. One is capable of learning for themselves after a certain age, I dropped out in ninth grade and now in my late 30s owning a business and seem to understand knowledge and life more than most college graduates. Yes, they are exceptional at specific skills but that’s it, most lack tremendously in common interactions with normal people. In the end, as a dropout I gravitated to books about real issues, and networked outwards and upwards.
Yes I did get my ged when I was 21.

As a husband of a public school teacher I can say that they are not allowed to fail kids anymore because it could affect them mentally 🙄 we’re basically holding these kids hands and as long as they show up they pass. Total crap and ruining the future of this country. The only incentive they have to pass is if they are on a sports team and are only allowed to fail one class a semester in order to be eligible.

Wow Granger I’ve listened to several of your podcasts. And you are amazing at this advice thing. I am absolutely amazed at the advice you give. I especially love the advice you gave the 15 year old who didn’t want to finish school. And again the advice you gave the young father who lost both his baby and wife. You are really good at this and I love listening so much.

If spencer or anyone like him I’d reading this. I was Spencer. I worked full time my junior/senior year of high school. Didn’t finish my senior year. I’m 22 and regret it. Nobody explained the point of why it’s important. The mindset and character it builds if you really commit to it. Wasn’t that long ago I was there. Trust me it’s worth finishing well.

In my opinion public school is not where you learn to learn. School forced a children to be surrounded by same aged children, all to rememorize certain facts and certain event in order to pass a test. It's to start children early to become workers. It's how their system was set up. Children learn and are more eager to learn when it isn't forced, when it is something they are interested in and when they have the freedom to explore things. Instead they are usually lock away inside walls, told when to use the restroom, when to eat, where to stand, where to sit, when to talk. Sounds more like a prison if you were to ask me. I'd go out on a limb and say - high schools teach you that to get anywhere in life, you must have a hunger for money, to be perfect and popular in the eye of society. Otherwise you will just work at a drive thru somewhere or cleaning tables. Anything that can be taught in a classroom could be taught in a way the student cares about outside the classroom. Little Johnny likes monsters trucks. He could just as easily learn to count 4 tires on monster trucks as he could learning how to count to 4 on a worksheet. And chances are he would understand it faster if it's put in a way he enjoys.
This kid that sent in the comment; he has the right idea! I'm proud of you, whoever you are. Work hard and stay focused! I don't know where you are from or what your circumstances are, but public high school may not be your only option. Explore other way to obtain an education. I know many kids of high school aged being homeschool, taking half their day for education and the other half work toward their dream. You don't have to set at a desk for 7 hours a day to learn. Check your state laws, see if there is a better way out there. Good luck, man. I wish you the very best! May God bless you.

A hunger for money? You mean capitalism? I went to public schools and had a great education. I came home from school and got more from parents as well when they helped with homework. I had fantastic teachers and made many friends. Life is what one makes of it. You sound like a victim because you were taught to be a victim.

@@amandahartung6287 Exactly my thought! This kid hasn't learned about writing a proper paragraph by the age 15, I don't think the last three year is going to help him anyways.

Government education does not teach you how to learn you’ll have a better chance turning gay than learning anything useful in government schools. And it’s kind of funny that the analogy you use is if he completes high school he’ll be working for someone else where he could focus more on working now and by the time he’s 18 he could have a very successful business made.

    • @user-hi1dj9kq8v

Actually great government teaches do teach one to learn. Parents also help. And also no one teaches anyone to be gay. One is born with their sexuality. No one has ever chosen to be gay. Your ignorance and hate is really apparent!! Stop using Christianity as an excuse to divide people and hate them. Let God be the judge
