      Haha! I hope I do them justice! I'm fairly new to them to be honest - I knew of the temperate garden varieties but all these non-hardy species are new to me. Can you recommend any other 'must buy' ones?

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I am admiring your Red Jewel as I have a Zebrina, but mine is the standard one, so if you ever pinch out a few sprigs am hoping you can fling the pinchings into an envelope * wink * * hint *. Following your last Tradescantia video I bought the Blushing Maiden and it arrived today and I am in love! I also bought a Spathacea Sitara 'Pink Inch' at the same time and I would recommend that, but I as it is new to me I am unsure whether it is a spreader or a trailer. I got them off eBay. I'll put some pics on my instagram.

      Yes of course - just email me your details and I'll send you some. I've just bought a couple more too - a T. Sillamontana and a T. Nanouk Lilac. Ebay is a saviour in the lockdown times! 😀

    Oooh maiden's blush? I had never seen before, so beautiful!!
    I have a sweet spot for Tradescantias, and own quite a few varieties and I could fill my veranda with those. They are semi evergreen (and almost a weed) for us here, and they all look like crap right now, after our horrible winter, but they always grow back, lush and beautiful, they are some of the hardiest plants I've ever had. My oldest one must be at least 25 years old and has survived frosts, snow, heatwaves, all outdoors, with NO CARE whatsoever for at least 20 of those years and didn't die. 🤪
    They definitely don't mind hard pruning, so go for it.
    Have a great day Jeff!! ☺️

      Yeah I've read about their invasiveness in some places. I like them for a backdrop to the blooms in my greenhouse. They're easy, look 'jungly' and grow quick. It's a win-win! The pruned ones are already coming back strongly - with no sign of virus I'm pleased to say. Have a great weekend, Valia, and thanks for your input - it's very welcome! 😀

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 they are just awesome. I just take clippings and place them directly into soil in other containers, in an effort to eventually have a groundcover in all of them in hopes of not having to deal with so many weeds... Not sure how invasive it is in a garden here, but I sure wouldn't mind at all.

    The zebrina and purpurea were very vigorous ground cover growers in Kenya ... I’ve never seen maiden’s blush 🤩 but the other 2 .. in Kenya... they grew like beasts! Interesting to see them in a greenhouse

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they're very invasive in some places. I only knew of the temperate variety up til last year. I just like them for a backdrop and to add to that 'jungly' effect. Plus, it's tricky for me to kill them! 😂

    'Red Jewel' is also a zebrina, its just the commercial cultivar/variety name (there are loads within T. zebrina). Plant Commelinaceae on FB is great for getting Trad identifications. Xx

    If you pinch out the tip to encourage side growth, will it ever grow out of the top again? I don’t want to pinch it out and then never have the choice to grow it longer. Also, do you pinch off the whole bit of stem above the leaves below it, or just the tiny new leaf out of the top? Thanks !

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In short - no. But why would you want it to? Wandering Jew is so vigorous you can leave any of the shoots to grow as long as you want them to and it'll happily oblige. And as for where to pinch, that's up to you. Wherever on the stem you pinch it, that will stop any further growth from the tip. Don't be afraid to experiment with it. If you make any 'mistakes', it'll very quickly recover and start to grow strongly again. In fact, any kind of pruning just makes it double its efforts. Good luck!

    Things I used to grow when I was a teenager .... which was a long time ago. Are there any that would be good in an outside summer hanging basket and can you recommend one that will tolerate cooler temperatures? I think I will be harvesting sugar snaps before lockdown finishes. I started growing them on an east window at the beginning of March and they some of them are starting to bud. So much tastier straight off the vine. Thanks for sharing, stay safe.

      They all seem to be OK down to about 5°C - and another lady from Greece in the comments here says her oldest one has survived frosts and snow - so I would just choose one and give it a go. The larger leaved Zebrina seems to be one of the most vigorous for me. Buy a cutting off eBay and you're away. They take literally days to root. And I love sugar-snaps - used to grow them too. My daughter always ate them all before they ever made it to the pot! Have a great weekend Patricia and I always appreciate your comments. 😀

    Hi Jeff! You were extremely helpful when I had questions about transcantia! I have a question about my philodendron mican; hope you can give me an idea of what is going on!💚🌿👍 I bought one recently,2 months ago,very small pot2 inch,replanted right away in a 4 inch plastic container. It's growing nicely in my south window. Temperature in Celina Tex is still 80s,. Just now getting cooler. The leaves have pin point size droplets of water underside of the mature leaves. Leaving dozens of marks underneath the leaf and when the sun shines through it appears spotted. 🙄😳👎What can be happening? Checked though,no pests? Have you ever heard of this?💚thanks,I consider you to be full of good information!💚👍

      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll give it a shot, Ellen, even though I haven't grown this plant. I've just looked it up - and I want one!🤣 So, the droplets of water aren't anything to worry about - it's just part of the plants natural transpiration of water from roots to leaves. It'll only happen on the underside of the leaves. In nature, the air movement would quickly evaporate the droplets so they wouldn't hang around for very long. You likely don't get that air movement where you have it indoors. I would slightly reduce your watering as it clearly has more than enough to be excreting so much water from the leaves. The marks from the droplets will likely be minerals left behind from either the media or from the water you're using. Try rain water or RO water. Good luck!

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 thank you very much! I didn't find that when I looked. I will hold back a bit on watering and use filtered water! It's something I haven't tried. It's such a beautiful plant and one that was very difficult to find here. It took me a year to get it. I'm hopeful now that I've got some new idea of how to possibly stop the spotting💚👍! Thanks again!
