- 64 year old Mandarin speaking immigrant Lidu Gong has learned te reo Māori, lifting him out of depression, transforming his life and that of his wife Susan, daughter Debra and mokopuna Chloe. Growing up in Communist China during the cultural revolution he moved to New Zealand on a student visa in 1996, is now a librarian at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and in full immersion on his Rumaki course. ➡️ SUBSCRIBE: / @thehuinewzealand

Aw this is so beautiful 🥺
My Aunty of Maori descent married a Chinese in Aotearoa in the 50s,60s. Through her Maori heritage her hubby Jock Lum learns to speak Maori and over time spoke it fluently.
The Hui, nice video I really liked it
That's so cool. I don't know my grandfather but he was Chinese. The crossover of Maori and Chinese culture is very cool.

If only we were all privileged enough to become professors at universities, we'd all speak multiple languages.

If one wants to learn,go ahead.
But don't force it onto all and sundry.
These are the Māori we want . Hopefully they replace the Māori that are here already

he understands old Maori....the conversation is difficult because it's basically English...if he learned conversations speaking with Kaumatua on Marae to even living with them for a little...
You come to the marae and speak te reo Māori with us. You come to our kura kaupapa Māori and teach. We ❤ Chinese people, language, culture etc too.
Chinese an Maori. Have the same DNA.
Love this why can’t Europeans they go on about learning so many languages ,I myself speak 3
Many do, I am māori born and raised. My partner is as pākeha as can be lol. As is his whānau. However 2 of the cuzzies kids are fluent as well as the cuzzy and the rest of the kids and the adults are all making a great effort to learn as much as they can (most of the aunties and uncles are well in there 60s). I'm proud of them and anyone who can even just give it a go.
They do, they just don't get mini-documentaries made about them.
