Fujioka actually voiced Ryo's father in the 1st Shenmue game. Fujioka is like the Japanese Chuck Norris but more bad ass and very friendly. He is also a real life martial arts expert and his movie and TV career is amazing playing a hard boiled detective, a cyborg riding super hero and the champion of the Sega Saturn. You should see his commmericals on youtube, it is both fun and bad ass for someone in his 70s. His eldest son Maido also played as the son of Segata Sanshiro for Sega and Kamen Rider Ichigo in a short role in Kamen Rider Beyond Generations Movie.
Oh dude, right here too. I was hoping they'd smuggle him back to Japan and release him into the wild or something. But what we got was just...nup too soon...excuse me.
I can't blame this lady too much, since I'm an otaku/Japanophile that also can't speak Japanese. The difference is that reading artifacts in Japanese isn't literally my job.
It's kind of wild that J. Larry Carroll went from this almost immediately into his decade of writing for cartoons before moving into live action TV shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Diagnosis Murder. That's a WEIRD career arc.
Not really. Some TV writers have gotten their start writing for animated TV, pre-Simpsons. Chuck Lorre, Paul Haggis, Mark Scott Zicree and the late Sam Simon (he worked at Filmation and HATED the experience). Ron Friedman did the opposite after working on stuff produced by Norman Lear, Garry Marshall, Aaron Spelling and Glen Larson and brought quality to stuff like G.I. Joe and Transformers.
No wonder why that samurai looked so familiar. As a kid I was obsessed with the original Kamen Rider, thanks to my aunt from over seas sending vhs tapes. I got to check this movie out now.
Indeed, even if the differences between Tokugawa Era Japanese and Modern Japanese are perhaps akin to those between Elizabethan and Modern English. Both sets are mutually intelligible, but with enough differences between them that there'd be difficulties in understanding from time to time.
J. Larry Carroll deserves credit for working with Charles Band AND Gerry Anderson. (Carroll and his partner Bennett Karren wrote for Anderson's "Space Precinct" and "Captain Planet and the Pllaneteers").
That ending that wasn't an ending really got me ! glad these old studios tried something different. the opening reminded me of the Shaw Brothers productions.
Excellent movie review Cecil I love The Ghost Warrior it’s such a criminally underrated movie from Empire Pictures. Hiroshi Fujioka is terrific in this movie as the main protagonist.
Was hoping to see a Segata Sanshiro mention. Fujioka is awesome. He also had a new Kamen Rider movie a few years ago that was great. He's been in some weird stuff like "Kani Goalkeeper" about a giant crab that plays soccer.
I like how it all comes full circle. Fujiyoka did a full movie as his original Kamen Rider character in 2016 and his allies for the movie were the cast of that current season. Kamen Rider Ghost.
That building isn't a water reclamation plant, it's the headquarters of a mortgage company (although that building has housed many companies over the years). It has served as a futuristic exterior for many, many productions, notably as the "San Angeles Police Department" in "Demolition Man," (when it was GTE's headquarters) and more recently as a science lab on "The Orville". It's located at 1 Baxter Way in Thousand Oaks, CA.
That will be 79.99 with 4.99 for 5 additional shuriken and preorder now for a kitsune skin. Also we are aware of some technical difficulties with the pc port which we aim to fix within 12 months, Thankyou for your money.
Man, I watched this movie when I was a child and I almost completely forgot about. All I remember is a samurai fighting some thugs and wandering around. Cecil, thank you so much for all those lost flicks
I knew this film as SWORDKILL. Still is a weird choice for a title. GHOST WARRIOR is perhaps more fitting! I’m so glad that you finally got round to doing this film. It’s so underrated. Maybe could be considered (excuse the pun) ahead of it time?! Taking something from a different time. Like a Soldier. A Ninja. Or indeed a Samurai, and see what would happen?! Is a really interesting concept! Probably why it was an oddity back then? 🤔. The cinematography for ancient Japan at the beginning is beautifully shot! It has some influences of YOJIMBO about it. In certain shots. One of my favourite Ninja type of 80’s movies! Great stuff! 😊👍
I don't get to watch these films, but thankfully you do a great review of them. You do a great review and it must take some time to edit and do these videos, so a special thank you.
I've been watching your vids for quite some time now and really enjoyed this one. It had me laughing out loud. Your writing and timing are comedy gold! Keep up the good work!
Heya Mr GoodBad. I just wanted to say thank you so much for making me aware of this film as I’d never heard of Encino Man with a Samurai Sword before. I stopped watching this a few minutes in because something within my very soul said "nah, I need to see this" and went and got it off Uncle Torrence. I watched it last night drunk because that’s what I do on a Friday night before coming back and watching this video in full. I genuinely enjoyed the shit out of this film but did not expect (or want) that grim ending. Maybe I wanted them to smuggle him back to Japan and release him into the wild or something. Thanks buddy I owe you, big time.
Always a pleasure to see Hiroshi Fujioka in stuff. Man is a legit legend. Also... not to be that guy... but it's pronounced Kamen like Common. I don't like being a pronunciation AKCHULLY guy, but as a long time Kamen Rider fan, it just... urked a little hearing it said like that. Apologizes...
Shame this was Carroll's only time to direct. I've always thought this film's direction, cinematography, and overall look was really tight. The action was easy to follow, there is not an abundance of weird blocking issues, and some of the perspective shots of just featuring fairly ordinary interaction look terrific. Like the clip highlighted when the female lead returns the clothing and swords back to Yoshimitsu. The shot angled upward towards the protagonist looked great and broke up the dull shot-reverse-shot that was especially common for dialogue sequences on these lower budget films of the era. Carroll didn't seem to have much to work with considering the script and I would have really liked to have seen what he was capable of with a few more films under his belt.
You should totally have a look at Born to Fight (2004) it's a Thai Action movie by the guy who made the fight choreography for the first Ong Bak Movie (And it's a remake of his very first movie Born to Fight (1984)) with some cheesy english dub and the most amazing and creative Stunt work you'll ever see. Those guys are absolutely nuts, especially if you have a look at some of the behind the scenes footage you can find on youtube. This movie has my all time most awesome martial arts kick in any movie i've seen and is a highly entertaining movie once it gets going. The fight scenes almost hurt to watch, when you see how they actually hit the shit out of each other (with real burning logs).
It sounds like some read the frist couple issues of Frank Miller's "Ronin" (released late spring/early summer of 1983) and came up with a cheap script based on elements (and I mean the most barebones of elements) from it.
Ghost Warrior also benefits from one of Richard Band's most beautiful scores.
Apart from being the first Kamen Rider , Hiroshi Fujioka played Segata Sanshiro, the Sega Saturn Spokesman
Head-canon is that Yoshimitsu was slicing up people and cars for not playing Sega Master System
I see you are a friend of Justice as well!
People that use the term head Canon scare me 😱
Thanks, I was thinking during all the video “Is that Segata?”
Oh shit.
Okay that Toshiro Mifune line in your stinger and that "I served in the Pacific, too" line make this movie worth it.
Word for word that was what I was going to reply.
:)
If someone on this earth had to have their tire punctured by a 500 year old samurai it would be Harold. That guy can't catch a break.

very good actors

Another masterpiece overlooked by the academy
SEGATA SANSHIRO!
"OK, now I'm just being silly."
But silly in a good way. Nah, a great way.
:)
Maybe not Liberty but Farmers we've seen a few things.
Bump-da-Bum-bum bum-bum-Bum!
Nice of them to do the Unfrozen Caveman story with something other than a caveman or giant monster this time.
you forgot about captain America also got frozen
I can't blame this lady too much, since I'm an otaku/Japanophile that also can't speak Japanese. The difference is that reading artifacts in Japanese isn't literally my job.
i understand what japanese said but can't speak anything japanese
5:17 hahaha your jokes are fantastic as usual. man, love your humor!
Thank you! Glad you like it :)
"Well, Greg, it finally happened. The samurai just burned down my shi shed."
Now it's a shi shed.
(Shi can mean death in Japanese. And yes, I had to google it.)

They could've gotten an interpreter in like a day!!! 😂😂😂
But then they'd have to explain all the unfrozen nonsense.
Indeed, even if the differences between Tokugawa Era Japanese and Modern Japanese are perhaps akin to those between Elizabethan and Modern English. Both sets are mutually intelligible, but with enough differences between them that there'd be difficulties in understanding from time to time.
"Why don't they just get an interpreter?"
"So the movie can happen!"
@@PlutoniumBoss That, and bad writing!

Bushido Blade. A classic.
You call Farmers for Samurai insurance, Cecil! Everyone knows that.
J. Larry Carroll deserves credit for working with Charles Band AND Gerry Anderson. (Carroll and his partner Bennett Karren wrote for Anderson's "Space Precinct" and "Captain Planet and the Pllaneteers").
"Bifurcated......ooooh that's a big word"
I properly laughed at that. You just keep getting better and better with each video man! Thank you.
Thanks!
The plot is almost just like the 1978 book "The Far Arena" about a Roman Gladiator frozen in ice.😀
That ending that wasn't an ending really got me ! glad these old studios tried something different. the opening reminded me of the Shaw Brothers productions.
The actors made it believable, way more than the average for this kind of movies you discuss.
I learned a new word today--thanks Cecil for 6:09.
:)
Say what you will...these 80's movies delivered on every level.
They behave like comic book adaptations

Really makes my day when I see you have released a video. I know I'm gonna laugh and get a break from the craziness. Thanks Cecil!
You are very welcome! :)
I've saw this way back in the '90's when my dad got a load of old Betamax tapes. Now I want to see it again.
After that reference at the end, I'm wondering if you are interested in reviewing "Assault of the Killer Bimbos".
I've been working on that one for a little bit. Interesting history for a silly film. It was also wholesale ripped off by a much larger film.
@@GoodBadFlicks Are you referring to Thelma and Louise? That is what I was thinking of when I saw the trailer for "Assault of the Killer Bimbos".
3:10 That big ass ink stain on the security dude's shirt. LOL.
This seemed to have a good, yet tragic, story.
I remember renting this as a kid and I enjoyed it!
It was a very interesting fish out of water story for its time.

I saw this on TV when I was a kid! I distinctly remember the samurai taking out that car tire. For some reason I thought it would explode, lol.

The thought of a VR release makes me squee with joy
And would result in a very broken room.
I only saw this once back then because there were so many titles and I never had the chance to see it again. Now I'll look for it and watch it again
This movie sounds awesome! How did I never see this?
Man, I watched this movie when I was a child and I almost completely forgot about. All I remember is a samurai fighting some thugs and wandering around. Cecil, thank you so much for all those lost flicks

In Portugal, it was called "O Samurai que veio do frio", literally The Samurai That Came from the Cold... I had this in VHS when I was growing up.
I love this movie. Saw it a lot as a kid
I had a 1979 Plymouth Reliant with a genuine all steel driver-kill flange on the back of the drivers seat. They don't make cars like they used to. 😢
Sometimes you want an unqualified person so you can easily control, dismiss or blame them.
The building I believe is the Baxter building in Westlake Village, CA. It's been used in movies many times.
8:10 That shirt slice was a nice effect.
