      Even though this was clearly shot on a small budget, I loved Melanie's "Mad Maxine" type character. She was cool and sexy and I really wanted that Mustang. It was as cool as Max's car. I thought it was clever how she installed an early version of lane departure warning and the car warned David Andrews that he was going to crash. Never imagined that the technology would become real one day.
      And let's not forget Timothy Thomerson's performance as the nutty Lester. He just ate up that role. Nobody else could have done that role as well.
      PS: Sadly, Pamela Gidley, who played Cherry, passed away in 2018. Her family wished for privacy and wouldn't state a cause of death. Rest in peace. I also saw her in the murder mystery True Blue and the comedy The Little Vampire.

      My wife (well, ex-wife now) and I tried to watch this and we're disappointed about how little of the satire landed.
      The movie spends way too much time trying to excuse Sam as a "romantic" rather than what we'd call him today-"an incel dweeb who's too scared of real women, so he can only fuck a robot sex slave!!"
      Part of the problem with this movie is that it's predicated on the idea that Sam's point of view is a reasonable one in a society where sexual harassment laws have gotten out of control. When this movie was made in the 1980s, that was a very real concern for men who never had to deal with women objecting to being objectified before. Four decades later that point of view seems bizarre, given how frequently women are still sexually preyed on by men and how seldom that leads to any accountability.

It was cynical then and practically reality now as some colleges have students who want to hook up sign consent contracts. Some of those Japanese robots already have AI. It paints a future that's more believable now than it was in 86.
    It's got a good cast of people that can actually act, unlike most of the others like this of the 80s. It's got good sets, good stunts, and great locations. No gaping plot holes and the characters aren't stupid. I like the plot. It's one of the better of the genre.

    These reviews are fantastic and I LOVE the art you commission for them. Thanks for supporting indie artists! Like most of the films you cover I saw this thanks to a family video store/jewelry store named Michael Gerard Video in Arctic, Rhode Island. I used to hang out with the owner's daughter & an employee named Ernie who recommended stuff like this to me knowing how much I love cheesy films.

    That scene showing the actors in the multi ringed pit is actually the Three Kids Mine. From 1917 - 1961 is was actively mined for manganese. It's situated near Lake Las Vegas, which is a high end residential area. Funny to see that in this film!

    Nice review Brandon! I agree it has a quiet sort of charm to it and that Tim Thomerson is a show stealer as Lester. Despite having a career of B movies Thomerson was an excellent actor who could have easily been an A Lister given the opportunity.

    Thanks for doing this one! 👍 Cliche or no they just don't make em like this anymore. It's a mixing of all sorts of drive-in staples with good diverse cast, nice tongue firmly in it's cheek script and enough budget (10M) to show some flair onscreen. It's an enjoyable little gem that most growing up in the 80's genre fans (myself included) remember fondly.

    It really wasn't that far off, they did start experiment on the whole sex bot AI thing around 2010's, so 2017 was pretty close. Had it been around the beginning of 2020's then they would have been spot on! 😜
    I do hope Brandon does a Dollman review cause I'm pretty curious about it (though I might as well watch the actual movie, which I might do since my vacation starts soon).

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They started experimenting, but there are still no AI sex bots. Which is odd, because the hardware exists, and this year's new chatbots are surprisingly versatile. And yet, the closest we had in 2017, and the closest we still have today, is talking dildos.
      I guess the problem could be motor control, but I thought Hiroshi Ishiguro had already solved that.
      It's probably because the market isn't there. Human labour is still a lot cheaper.
