My dad was a general contractor and I am a real estate investor who does a lot of my own work. Guys, of all the dozens of vour videos I've watched on my smart TV, this one had me in tears! and I just had to break out my laptop and post this comment. Not only is the roof really, really beautiful, but the filming itself and the editing are both just beyond great - wow factor work. Congratulations!
I'm probably not the only 76 year-old widow lady who is an avid fan, but even so it might seem a little strange fare for an old lady's favorite relaxing entertainment. What could be better than watching men work? Nah, it's not that (well, maybe a little) - my father was a master cabinet maker, and all around Mr. Fixit in our home. And I always found something to make out of his scraps. Oh the smell of fresh sawn wood! In his early days he was a part-time lumberjack along the Oregon Coast, and we would go with him camping out in the woods. My Mom accidently walked out of the second story window of an old barn we found to camp in once, thinking she was on her way to the outhouse - she wasn't hurt, thank God.
TH-cam is my favorite go-to for relaxation, and if I see a new video from you it's the first thing I watch. I admit I have to pray for you all often, and thank God He has kept you fairly safe so far. Please keep up the good "safety first" work ethic. Praying before you begin a day's work is the best way to start your day.
It's going to take some real ingenuity and creativity to keep up the excitement when you build the house compared to this monster garage/apartment. Makes me so tired just remembering all that stinking mud! And because I live here in Hawaii on the Big Island, I was thrilled to watch your bathroom remodel on Kauai. Personally I am certain I could never live through any sort of remodel - the details, the roadblocks, the material limitations, not to mention the permits, the inspectors, the cost and the mess would send me to my grave. And I don't think I could ever be so lucky as to find anyone with a more dedicated eye to proper detail than you.

I've been thinking that just about the time the "Dream House" is finished I might just be ready to make my home user friendly for my 80's and 90's - slide out kitchen drawers instead of cupboards, walk-in shower, hall rails, garage remodel for live-in help, and whatever other modern conveniences that help people live out their lives in their homes might be available by then.
I wonder if that might be a Hawaii destination project the boys and your family might be interested in making their next project? Thankfully there is plenty of time to consider it, and I am sure your talented husband and boys might enjoy researching and documenting it for the good of so many seniors who want to be able to stay at home. The craziest roofing job I've seen done was when I remodeled a mansion in Maine. I hired a local company and 10 guys showed up at 7am with a 24' enclosed utility trailer with exterior boxes where they all pulled out a box with a belt, hose, bar, and nailer. They also had a dump trailer and two Equipter 4000 roofing trailers. The roofing dump trailers are unhooked and remote controlled around the house with scissor lifts that lift the dump body to roof level so they could strip the roof right into the trailers without any shingles hitting the ground. 4 more guys showed up around 11 just to lay shingles. These guys stripped and laid 30 sq in 6 hours and were on their way to do 40 sq of metal before they went home. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it. That black drip edge is such a great way to add detail for next to no money. Been pushing it for 5+ years now. Those shingles look really nice too. They must have been in heaven with no hips, valleys, skylights, ridge vents, and a single roof penetration lol. Looking forward to the next one!
Yeah I've seen that type of equipment before and roofers like that. On one job it was 4PM and no roofers yet so we figured they were a no show. They rolled in 5 minutes later and finished at 8PM... unreal
It’s really the only way to have an efficient profitable roofing business. Having good crew everyone knows their job, gets at it, get in get done.
It took a friend and me about three days to shingle a house with 22 square, and it was a LOT of work. Depending on the shingles you chose, they should easily last 30-40 years provided that they are installed correctly.

@@michaelmaas5544 Roofing has some of the highest margins so you don't really need all the fancy equipment. I was roofing summers at 11-12 yrs old and we would take 3-4 days on normal roofs. Boss probably charged $6-8k for ~$1-2k materials and $1-2k labor and made $1k+ per day himself. The outfit I described was the best I've witnessed across dozens of companies I've hired.
As a European used to brick walls, clay roof tiles... I usually laugh at the typical construction grade US "sticks and cardboard" home, but I gotta say, this build looks SOLID and those shingles you got there are no exception.

The Brits love their Elizabethan timber frame houses and Scandies have stave churches from the 1500s, then are surprised that wooden framed houses can be well built. It's more that America started with >4.000.000 km² of forests, and still has ¾ of that left.

Wow, I would be really careful about this choice. Asphalt shingles (AS) have been refined over decades in the worst conditions to the point that manufacturers are offering a lifetime shingle warranty for residential applications. It is true that hail can damage asphalt shingles (AS), but it takes a major hail storm. I am a licensed General Contractor in Arizona 40 years ago, AS roofs would wear out in just 10 years, and a lot of Arizonans stopped purchasing them. To their credit, AS manufacturers improved their products and started providing warranties to back their shingle roofs. At first, these warranties weren't very good, but they have improved tremendously. Arizona just had over 30 days in a row with temperatures over 110 degrees - the heat is brutal. Today, you can buy AS roofs with a legitimate lifetime warranty.
There are a lot of features I like about these shingles. They don't have surface grit; they are thick, which means that they should last a long time. I like that they bond to the roof and to each other strongly, really well. In many ways, they appear to be superior to AS. But the HUGE question is, will they last?
Overall, I think it is a good decision to try this roof, provided it is not overly expensive. It looks like a good product. Hopefully they have fully tested it in hot climates.

Naw, your logic in letting a roofer to do the job so you can get a solid warranty makes perfect logical sense. Also 6 pro roofers work faster than 3 pro builders.

That material telegraphs the imperfections in the roof significantly.
Trust me, you want to add a backing board for the TV. You don't want to limit your options on mounts. I work in home theater installation and have ran into way too many brand new homes that we ended up having to mount to a center stud and toggle the edges. Just do it and save the hassle.
Now, don't forget to add two brush plates/boxes with a larger conduit to pass your HDMI cables from your tv down to whatever entertainment center you choose. This will really give a minimal look and also once again save tons of headaches. You don't want cables hanging everywhere and running cables through insulation is no fun.
I would be glad to answer any questions on the AV side [Speakers, Wiring, ECT]. Sonos has some great simple whole home audio products that would really make this space pop.
P.S. I would lower the TV box down around a foot or two. You want your livingroom tv to be centered at eye level. On the other hand this can conflict with furniture, so you have may have to mount it higher than what is considered "ideal". At the end of the day its your space so don't get discouraged by the "TV TOO HIGH" crowd.
I’m not usually a fan of synthetic products . Plus I’m a metal roof guy . But I have to admit they look great !! They also look very high quality. If they really can handle hail then asphalt shingles should be a thing if the past
My guess is the limiting factor is going to be cost (as usual). I'd also love to know if that adhesive on the bottom holds up under freezing temperatures or if this is a warm climate product. if they do, this could be amazing for helping prevent damage from ice damming.

I've seen this man climb a scaffold like it was on the ground while 30 feet in the air, balance beaming trusses, sliding down a scaffold, he's a wild man. We’ve installed a ton of F-Wave roofing in & around Austin over the last 3 years. We love it, our homeowners love it, & yes, we’ve had a few tested recently with severe hail up to 3” & they don’t need to be replaced!
Great to hear that! I'm a custom home builder in the Houston area and would love to use this product. How does it compare in price to a traditional asphalt shingle? Does it seem to hold its color over time? Have you done any houses that have had this material on longer than 3 years?
@@marcussp83 Some slight fading has been observed but not visibly from the ground.
While cost can be a kicker for many, at $1,000/sq retail, it’s well-worth it in area prone to frequent & severe hail. It comes in more than double the price of a traditional non-impact-resistant architectural asphalt shingle. And, after what we saw the it withstand last year, the best bang for the buck.

What’s the life expectancy of this roof system?
F-Wave says 50-years but nothing ever last as long as they say it does. If you live in an area prone to frequent severe hail, I think if you can get 30-35 years out of it you've got your money's worth in lost deductibles. @@mikeyd5969

The shingles look great and I do love the aspects of them. The rake edge at the peak has a gap in the metal at the ridge @ 11:10 & the front overhang has a pronounced wave in the shingles @ 13:49. A 2nd overhang wave is @ 19:44. The first item I pointed out is on the roofers, but the second two are on yall for adding the overhangs later. Extending roof sheathing then adding overhang ladders would eliminate this, but the strongest overhang is a drop truss at each gable, and extending the ladders into the roof to the next truss. Not even corbels will solve this wave now.
I have exposed beaded stock overhangs of 20" with a 5/4" x 10" rake facia and the beaded stock is 51" and goes back to the center of the 3rd rafter 16" OC. My corbels are 4"x4". All exterior is 100% cedar.
I thought the humps had to be camera distortion but I didn't know the history of the overhangs. Crazy for a new build.

I'm a carpenter, done only a little roofing. I'm trying to understand if the wave in the shingles is just an aesthetic concern?
Unless there's some functional issue I'm not understanding, seems like a non issue. This crew is up front that it's the first new construction start to finish build they've ever done. A little wave on the roof that is high up and rarely seem, that's fine. I've watched enough of their videos to know on the finish carpentry and tile and all that is in our field of view every day, they'll get it better than most people are capable of, or have the patience for
@@steveschnaar5870it's aesthetic only. The only. If those overhangs were completely removed, the house would still have full vapor barrier and insulation once they install that. The only real point to having the overhangs is to move rainfall away from their foundation.
Saw the wave in the overhangs also. Would drive me crazy.

I think it looks great, where would the rain water go on a windy day when it’s hitting against the T on the rakes? …usually shingles are overhung for that purpose. I’m sure this was tested, but just not explained more in depth.

Yeah i do like the toughness of these they showed - esp the hail resistance. I lost my roof in a big hail storm not long ago (hi from Brisbane Australia) and this was big concrete tiles. Metal sheeting all up our street as well was obliterated. I like the idea of something that doesn't just shatter to bits and hail ends up punching holes into your living room.... or dent metal completely when the very rare and scary big one inevitably comes.

One other question not answered, but I suspect I am not the only one who has it. It looks as though installation costs are probably about the same as for asphalt. But what is the delta, if any in the material cost? The shingles look very similar to the Timberline I have on my house, and those are not inexpensive shingles, but at some point they will need to be replaced. Are the synthetics price competitive (material, I get that labor is labor). Thanks, and I always enjoy a new Stud Pack video.

That drone footage is awesome you could even see that at 23;49 as the drone was flying over the ridge the last courses of shingles underneath the capping were not the same size.
Looks amazing I'm sure it looks better in person we don't have shingle roofs in the UK unless it's a garden outhouse or shed
How well will the solar panels work on it?
That T drip edge on the rakes really worries me. Rain will get blown against the T and flow under the shingles there, and get pulled out into the field, potentially finding places through your roof near nails or other penetrations.
Typically the shingles are cut to overhang the drip edge by 1/4" or so, so there is not guaranteed spot where water will get under the shingles.
If that T profile had a fold or ridge an inch or two in from the T part, to ensure that there is airspace under the shingle so the water runs down instead of horizontally, it might work ok. And I suppose if the shingles are designed to allow water to flow freely under the shingle it might be ok.
The rakes worry me too
I wondered about this too. Typically you would step flash against an edge like the T so maybe they caulked the seam where the shingle meets the T flashing?
@@Jonnyeet I suspect that there is space under the shingles to provide a capillary break and the water would just run down without leaving the drip edge. I would still feel better if there were a moulded ridge to provide a water channel.
@Jonnyeet possibly..... feels like a step that would be particularly subject to installation error.... or failure down the line. Personally i don't like it

What is the pricing compared to asphalt shingles?
Wave shingles are a relatively new product, so I suspect their probably double the price of asphalt shingles. They "should" come down in price if they become more popular. I wonder if Wave has a patent on these shingles?
Your work is truly impressive. Here in Australia building is so very different to what is seemingly the norm in the US. To us, a lot of what is done there would be considered overkill but for most of us, the climate is nowhere near as severe as it is there which obviously affects the way things are done. In our main cities it never snows and we certainly don't get the extreme hot weather that you seemed to get every day in the summer.
We would regard 16'' centres for your framing as excessive and we have never heard of Zip sheeting to make buildings airtight. In fact, until not so long ago our regulations required all habital rooms to be provided with permanent fixed ventilation. Your electrical requirements are quite different also. Almost all housing is constructed with masonry (brick) cladding and timber cladding isn't used a great deal other than for spandrills and the like.
I love your shingle roof but that's another thing we don't see here. Maybe concrete shingle tiles but that's hardly the same thing. Slate is used in tiny quantities but its cost rules it out for all but the most expensive builds.
Having said that, I really like the way you do things over there and I'm more than a touch jealous of some of the materials you have available to you.
Why don't we use a product like the gang is using? I was wondering while watching, all I see are colorbond or teracotta roofs.
The whole zip sheathing / airtight construction thing is big on TH-cam but I don't think it's a large percentage of new construction in the US. Maybe in some areas, I dunno. Within the US there is also a massive difference in construction techniques between different areas.
@@woodsie001 I guess it's a case of supply and demand Woodsie. James Hardie dabbled in shingles a number of years back but that never amounted to much. We also used to use terra cotta shingles (as distinct from tiles) on expensive luxury homes but their cost is horrendous, the same with slate. Most tiled roofs use concrete tiles rather than terra cotta - again it's a question of cost. As I said above, I get a little jealous of all the products they have available in the States compared to here. I assume you're an Aussie to use the term Colorbond.

I would have had the roofers knock that out while they were there unless the porch roof will use an alternative material. Metal?

nah, that is good in a situation where drywall is already up. If it isnt and your doing your air leakage tests, its cheaper to go around and manually find and fill the leakage spots with pressurized home and smoke pens etc.
I honestly thought they might get them as a sponsor, it's such a cool process and would have loved to have seen it, although I don't know how many leaks they would have lol

Fantastic shingle, wish I had it a couple of years ago when we had to put on a new roof due to hail storm.
what are the price comparisons between these shingles and regular shingles?
For my relatively small house these were about $10k more. Had to go with regular old asphalt.
Is it just me or when they installed the drip edge at the peak there was no overlap? Which leaves a seam/gap at the very peak? Great video tho!! I love the new roof tech and you really found an installer that goes above and beyond!! timestamp 11:11 I know very little about roofs so I could be missing something.. nm ridge cap shingles. It was at the end :-) I have seen installers overlap the drip edge at the peak.

@@kc9scott They talked all about the method of installing caps with respect to prevailing winds. It's shown in the finished shots.
@@susanlovesjava4961What you’re talking about is the ridge pieces made of basically the same material as the rest of the roof. What I’m talking about is the gap between the two pieces of metal drip edge at 11:05. That area really should have a top metal piece to cover that gap. The final shots are from too far away to be able to tell if such a piece was put on.

You didn’t have to penetrate the roof for that vent: you could’ve gone out the side with a very nice solar powered positive venting upon-demand vent cap.

You don’t want screws in the bottom part of that flashing because that’s a roofing penetration that’s going to leak.
They could’ve done a better job shingling that pivot boat in to the shingle lines.
Shingles “cover” nails for a reason.
I think it’s so funny that better roof products have to mimic tar shingles.
It mimics slate in our opinion

I've roofed several houses, helping my dad. Even roofed for work for a summer. I can only imagine how much this cost you guys. Used to do roofs bigger than that in a day with just my dad and I. And you have 8 guys counting the foreman and safety guy getting paid. Anyways it looks super nice. And I imagine the clean up as super easy.
I showed my dad the video (he roofed for over 40 years) and he said it looks great but that lip on the rake is going to force the water underneath the shingle and the nail holes are going to loosen up over time and leak there. If the lip is absolutely necessary sealing those nail holes is necessary.
The roof was more interesting than your therapy commercial. Please don't do that again....

Amazing looking roof and I like how the shadow of the tree is projected perfectly into the corner at 23:25. The roofing contractor was outstanding and really knew his stuff and the workers did an awesome job!
Wish I could’ve seen a clip of the roofers cutting the shingle. I was curious as to how easy/difficult it was with a regular box blade.
Smart, strategic plan with out and pain in time allowed. I enjoyed it and it seem like a good product.
