    Hi Marty. Thanks for the video. It helped me give a further explanation to the quartz crystals in watches and how they work. Your hands on approach is really helpful.

    Hey can you help me explain how this thing communicates its vibration back to the clock? I get that it has two wires connected to it (let's call this the input) to provide it with a specific frequency, but how does the clock get the output of the Quartz? Does it go over the same two wires as the input? That'd be confusing...
    (For the rest it was seen to be isolated by a metal tube)
    Thanks for the tear-down video.

    • @martyjopson
      @martyjopson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am a bit vague about this myself. The way I understand it, any small input voltage across the pins of the oscillator will have inherent random fluctuations. These will start the oscillator vibrating and this will build and drive the voltage oscillation to the crystals resonant frequency on top of the base line supply voltage. So you measure the oscillation using the same pins.Which is, as you say, confusing

    This is an older video and I love that explanation of why they are used in clocks because of the divide by circuitry can bring the pulses to 1 pulse/sec. I have been able to check any XTAL except for thes little tuning forks. I have tried many circuits like colpitts but just cant seen to see a reading from these on my scope.

    Dear Mr JOPSON,
    I rarely comment on anything but now I sincerely hope that you are, or were a teacher/ professor because you have that wonderful ability to make anything delightfully interesting.
    And if you are not, please find a way to do so because we need passionate, knowledgeable and yet entertaining people like you to teach and prove our younglings that it is easier to fall in love with science/ a learning field, rather than it is to hate the teacher.
    It should be.
    Thank you.

    Beautifully simplistic. I had been googling the crap out of the quartz in a clock and everything stated it looked like a tuning fork but still I drew a blank…until just now. Thank you. Any chance you are available for baby sitting two boys aged 5 and 7 that keep asking me questions like what is a quartz clock… make that 3 boys as I’m quite interested in all stuff that nobody pays attention to because we live in a world where others more interested in such things, take care of such things so others don’t have to, kinda thing

    How do you pick up the vibration of Quartz into a signal ?

    • @martyjopson
      @martyjopson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As the quartz relaxes, it emits a pulse of electricity. This is partially used to keep the quartz vibrating by feeding it back into it. But it is also used to provide a signal that is fed into a digital divider that produces a once per second pulse to drive the clock.

    • @hanniffydinn6019
      @hanniffydinn6019 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marty Jopson holy fuck yes, squeezing A crystal creates electricity so the movement caused by electricity will cause an extra release of electricity ! Thanks..... I'm just waiting for my time Crystal watch which pulses by itself without power !!!

    • @martyjopson
      @martyjopson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hanniffy
      Thanks for your reply and thanks for watching the clip. This is the piezo electric effect - deform quartz and it produces electricity, but also in reverse, apply electricity to quartz and it deforms (changes shape). It's really just a cunning way of converting mechanical energy directly to electrical without the need of magnets. The quartz in your watch uses the power from the battery to set up the vibration and maintains it with a constant extra trickle. The emitted pulses are used to a) time the insertion of that continued electrical trickle and b) provide a time signal. Apologies if that was not made clear.
      On a separate note, there is no need to be so sarcastic and rude. Maybe if you had phrased your response more politely it would have been altogether nicer for us both. In future if you don't understand a response, maybe mocking sarcasm is not the best way to continue the dialogue.
      Respectfully yours
      Marty

    Hi
    How can I Make
    24 Hours And 45 Minutes Clocks Measurement
    Let's Say For Other Planets
    well Actually My Circadian Rhythm Is 24 Hours and about 48 Minutes on Average
    I have Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder
    Dspd Non-24 Hours
    some People Call Me Martians
    I Know It Is Frustrating To Wake Up 45 Minutes Later Every Day
    But I accepted This As a 32-year-Old
    i am interested To Make Clock That Tracks My Body clock
    Do You Know Any Html Or JavaScript Or Any Other Codes To make
    or Is there any Html Codes Of Martian Time
    That I Can change It From 39 Minutes To 45-48 Minutes?
    If Not
    How Can I Slow Down A Quartz Clock To Run little Slower
    let's say Capacitor or Resistors
    3% Percent Slower
    But Not Pendulum Clocks
    Cuz That's The Easiest One
    Thank You So Much, Sir
    I hope You Have Some Solutions For Me

      Oh and I arrived to your vid because it was the most accurate (title) one for what I wanted to know. I was thinking about this because I was thinking about the Human Heart, and the human heart is kind of the purpose of a crystal because well idk. I was just thinking about the human heart. Not the pump mechanics but the way it works electronically speaking

    • @theblukatlife

      Ok i arrived to this si·no·a·tri·al node
      ˌsīnōˌātrēəl ˈnōd/
      nounANATOMY
      a small body of specialized muscle tissue in the wall of the right atrium of the heart that acts as a pacemaker by producing a contractile signal at regular intervals. So this is kind of like the crystal ok but how does that SA gets it energy, like is it like a special component that does it automatically? I mean this website my.clevelandclinic.org/services/heart/heart-blood-vessels/how-does-heart-beat explains medically how it works but I wanted to know the explanation of Engineer work. I see some capacitors and resistors there and some controllers and all that but is not clear. Do you think you can explain Electronically Engineer speaking how the heart works? The first thing is, How does the SA works by itself well, I think the brain sends an impulse but what if the human has a death brain, how does the heart still pumps. So where does the energy to make the SA still works. This thing is making me crazy I need to study more
