Cool! One question though : Are you using the FM4 in the TB mode? Cause mine adds an extra volume every time I kick it... And I've read that in the normal config the extra volume wasn't there anymore (cause the extra volume is always there then)
Yes I am using it in True Bypass mode. There is infact a little volume bump, but, as you can hear, it's almost a cool feature as those filters need just tiny bit more volume to stand out better!
I've tested this and the result is that the extra volume is still present even in the non-TB mode. But i've noticed this bump was louder when the "tron up" effect is used (in TB or not). The clean sound with non-TB mode gives some treble back but I guess it depend on the pedal chain you are using (something which is easily modified with a good EQ).
Perfect, thank you. Maybe I am not experiencing this volume bump because of Ce-1's compression. Anyway, just to warn people, is it still usable even with this little bump or is it a huge problem? This may interest a lot of guys out there
Fantastic Man! Then sound was very good! I think just that Led part but I really enjoyed your video and answered all my questions and am sure everybody else's. Thanks man
Nice one will, I’ve just bought a secondhand FM4 off EBay in UK and waiting for it to arrive, I’m sure I’ll be creating many crazy filtered guitar sounds in no time!! I stumbled across your video which I enjoyed just for your explanation into controls and obviously your sounds, I watched all your video as it would be rude to just skip through it to get to the ‘Throw away your television’ part 😂🤣 anyway thanks for the insight into your pedals and sounds, I can’t wait for my FM4 to arrive now, cheers
Will, I bought a Little Big Muff, and a DOD FX65 Chorus (BSSM ERA) ... I already have the WH10, DS2 and ZOOM G1. In what order should I put the Big Muff? And the DOD, can I put it last? I want to sound like John Frusciante ... It's true, 01- DS2 02- LITTLE BIG MUFF 03- WH10 04- ZOOM G1 05- DOD CHORUS (BSSM ERA) ? THANK YOU !!!
hatacamadaba Yes, I am still working on it. But it sounds clean in comparison to the FM4... The FM4 "distortion" it's the result of a poor digital tracking... An unwanted effect that is actually pleasant!
Hi Will. Nice video. Do you have any suggestions for substitutes for that line 6 FM4. Thank you so much Will. I'm a John Frusciante fan as well. Love your videos.
Hey Ethan. I have the same "issue" so I'm working onto a digital pedal which can do the same and more (but more compact). The digital effect part is over, but i still need to implement digital controllers which are the most difficult thing... I hope to release it one day
It depends. During live he alternates Moog 101+cp251 to the WH10, according to how he feels.. but generally on the record he used a low pass filter (not like a wha)
Great video will! I'm thinking on buying the fm4, do you know how does john to get that AWESOME sound on the Federation Square Jam? I know he uses FM4-delay-and his wah, but I'm not shure how he sets the obi-wah mode and delay. Anyways thanks for the dedication and keep it up with this videos!
How are you powering your board, especially fm4? Isolated power brick or factory power supplies into a strip? Fm4 is tricky to figure of which power supply bricks will work with the ac dc conversion. I have the line 6 power supply but want to use a compact power supply for all my pedals.
Not using Line 6 pedals anymore, but.. if it can help… I was using a Truetone cs power supply. You should be able to power Line 6 pedals with 9V DC but using a reverse polarity cable. I believe Truetone provides you the right cables inside the power brick package
@@WillGalluccio I’m very interested in buying your chorus ensemble pedal and wah pedal. Is there a place I can send a Private message about those pedals?
@@bobbykoalaproductions No, it's a step filter. Could easily be a MURF or a Low Pass Filter with a precise step CV controlling its swing. It's quite complex, but I'm sure it's not FM4.
Hey. I personally think you can only use this pedal if you have the following two pedals with it: an equalizer , which will fix both volume changes and the huge problems with treble/bass fluctuations with this pedal ....and a boss line selector , which you can use to turn on/off both your fm4 combo. This also makes it much better for on the fly use. If you start using this set up you'll begin to understand the importance of an ls2 and why the rare few people consider one or many ls2 pedals to be so important for pedal board usage.
Good sound! I also use FM4. The question is, when using a spin cycle, in my environment, the speaker makes a swooshing sound when I'm not playing, is that the same for you?
Julian Knoll - AI3JeWelz I am still "fighting" with those Moog pedals so I would first of all learn to use them really really well and only after this make a video about them! Thanks anyways for the idea!
Yes I am still struggling with this stuff and leaning how to record properly. I made some progress but I still need to improve a lot in recording! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! :)
I'm also somewhat new. it's all about the experimentation. Generally you want to move the mic from between the outer edge of the speaker and the edge of dust cap till you find something that you like. I also find that condenser microphones can be a little bit more forgiving when it comes to mic placement and a lot easier to get a good sound with.
Thank you for your tips. Yes, it is quite difficult and you don't get really consistent results every time... but it's really fun to experiment with! It's incredible how placing a mic differently can change your tone drastically. Thanks for your comment anyway!
Ruben Aguiar No. Although I am planning to use it because I need a volume boost for solos in live contexts (as I play in a band) and I am trying to find a way to place a booster in the fx loop without affecting tone drastically.
Hi Will, would you recommend this pedal just for the dani california watery effect if i dont want to spend a lot of money in the moog pedals?, and what do you think of the boss ce-2w in comparison of the original ce-1?
Javier C I wouldn't recommend you this because it boosts a lot of volume and it would be quite unpleasant. Plus I have never found a setting that could emulate that as I wanted.. if you want then try to get this, but honestly I wouldn't. The waza chorus isn't the same sadly!
Javier C The thing is that there is nothing around at that price. I will also release before the end of the year an effect which does the job, but it will be a little bit more expensive then 200$. At this point go for the FM4.. you can always enjoy other kind of effects from it, so it's like buying a lot of pedals... It isn't the best thing in the world but there aren't other solutions...
I think I found a pedal that might do the job, the Electro Harmonix Blurst, it’s pretty much a low pass filter that modulates the filter cutoff point with an LFO, seems like it’s just what the moog pedals do, right? Do you think I’d be better off buying the FM4 or that pedal? Thanks again so much Will and sorry for asking so many questions.
Honestly, at the point where I am, I don't remember anymore if the "improvisation" that I do is in my mind because I heard it from John before or not haha, sorry :)
My bad! I remembered it was also in the original recording.. In Live At Slane Castle, during "Ten more reasons why i need somebody new..." There's an effect present, that might be from the FM4, do you recognise it? Thank you!!!
The Slane Castle show has got some post recorded parts. Keeping that in mind, usually in a live perdormance he used his Electric Mistress for that effect during the song.

Hi. Have you tried similar setups using line 6 m9?
No, but m9 effects are exactly the same, so they should completely work

Ok Will. Thank you so much.
You can look into the Line 6 M5. It has over 100 effects, with distorsion, filter and modulation.
How is the name of the effect for throw away your television? Not the pedal, the effect
Random step bandpass filter (?)
So for those little parts in Dani California John doesn’t use the Ibanez WH10?
It depends. During live he alternates Moog 101+cp251 to the WH10, according to how he feels.. but generally on the record he used a low pass filter (not like a wha)

What is the size of your pedalboard? 32”, or larger?
Will, do you think Josh is using any of the FM4 modeling effects during the solo in Sick Love or is it just fuzz and an octave pedal?
should be Black WH10 into Tone Bender or something similar
Do you or anybody know what the settings for the Line6 M5/M9/M13 Obi-wah would be?
Wouldn’t it be the same? The knobs have the same settings, at least for the M5.

Before!

Dani California verse and bridge 2 similar tone can be achieved by Line6 DL4 "Sweep Echo" Delay 0, Repeats 4, Tweak 8, Tweez 8, Mix 6.
i gotta be honest this was way to long a simple tone demo and a picture of the settings would have done the same in 2-3 minutes
I just have one phone to record, so that would mean moving the camera angle every time because I needed to pick it up to shoot the picture
