    All the Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Nomos that have come and gone in my modest collection have never taken my Sinn556 ‘s crown of most loved watch.
    Even sitting next to the Tudor Black58 in the watchbox, the 556 is the one that sings to me.

    The 556A has by far the best legibility of all my watches. I visited the Sinn factory in Frankfurt shortly after I bought the watch in 2018. Bang-for-buck wise, I think Sinn makes the best tool watches. Plus the best, super-informative catalogues! 👍

    Love this video Pete. So refreshing. Boring can be beautiful. I been told my daily (Certina DS1 Chronometer, you've reviewed it) is monochrome and boring and that is just fine with me. For me, it's the perfect watch. Not everything has to be stand out unique or desperate for attention. It can be simple, strait forward, do the intended job and be beautifully boring. So nice to see someone else is with me on this. Cheers.

    This is my first watch and thus the one that got me into watches. It's still my daily wear toolwatch. Bought it after my first €20.000+ job around give or take 15 years ago. I just delivered the finals to the agency and walked down the street, not really windowshopping but I was a man in bonis, when I saw that watch in the window. I knew nothing of watches but I had to have this one so I bought it. For exactly the reasons this video states. I knew nothing of watches but I do now. Thanks for this video Peter, it's so spot on.

    Fantastic video made by an obvious Sinn fan. I have the 556i. It feels sometimes chunky on the bracelet but it is compact. It is the quintessential Sinn. Its dimensions are in between a Tudor Black Bay 36 and Black Bay 41. So, if you wanted a high quality tool watch that isn't obviously copying another watch , this may be a nice choice.

    Peter … excellent video again. Watching it today while wearing my 556i (coincidence that it came up to bat on the day I’m watching your vid). Your assessment of your piece and Sinn, in general, is spot on. I own a 104, U50 & U1 SE as well, and don’t know which of these is my favorite but am aware that while they all bring something different to the table … their DNA is the same. I will be chopping my collection hopefully in half very soon to find more wrist time for my Sinn’s (and other preferred German-made watches). In fact … all of my Sinn’s, Damasko’s, Nomos’, Stowa’s and Muhle Glasshutte … are staying put!!!

  • @gentlmentlmn

    I'm a designer and, indeed, I bought this watch as my first 'proper' watch for many of the reasons you list Peter. Number one, I am a big fan of modernist design and I love German design specifically. I find no watch brand at Sinn's price point (or even above for that matter) quite approaches Sinn's level of well thought out and timelessly designed dials. You'd have to jump to the IWC Mark or the Moonwatch to get something similarly on point design-wise... at 5 or 6 times the cost. Nearly every element is placed in JUST the right spot. Fonts, the style and length of the hands, and the length of the indices are all carefully considered on the 556A. It all just works in that simple, "boring" yet brilliant way as you point out. Whether you've been trained to pick up on these visual elements or it just 'feels right' to you - many watch lovers these days seem to be realising the silent brilliance of the 556 design. I also agree with you on the robust quality feel of the case and the watch as a whole. It feels overengineered and damn well indestructible. I'm personally a big fan of the Pilot watch aesthetic. There's just something about that simple, ultra clear and readable dial. It feels like the humble 556 is finally getting the recognition is deserves - especially the less talked about Arabic numbers version (556A). I bought mine in 2018 when there were very few TH-cam videos about it. I almost talked myself out of it because it was so simple... glad I didn't. It has been a slowly building love affair since then. It's now my go-to, most worn watch. It's versatile and oh so satisfying to look at. Mine's been keeping an average +4 seconds a day measured in 4 positions on the timegrapher - a very respectable result in my opinion. In short, it's an amazing watch!

    • @jermiazhang
      @jermiazhang ปีที่แล้ว

      As a designer, what do you think of the 556 i?

    • @gentlmentlmn
      @gentlmentlmn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jermiazhang Also a good looking watch. The i achieves a more dressy look by being glossy black rather than matte. Also, it has greater simplicity with markers and hands only. The only text is the Sinn logo and the word Automatik. But this simplicity comes at a price (in my mind): there is more negative space on the dial. It looks like the hands are floating in a sea of black. The white markers run along the edge but there is a lot of black in the centre. This makes the dial look slightly bigger than on the 556A. By contrast, in the 556A the numbers take up more space on the dial, crowding it a little more and causing slightly less negative space. I prefer this look and find it a bit more balanced. I also happen to like numbers on watch dials - so that's personal preference too. The other difference between the 2 watches, of course, is the placement of the date window. On the i it's at 3 o'clock and on the A it's at 4:30. I don't mind the placement at 4:30 although I have to tell you the date is SO tiny it's almost useless to me (I am middle aged lol and my eyesight is not what it used to be). But at least it's subtle. Certainly the Sinn 556i is a stunner. Hope this has been helpful. I'd say go for the one that captures your heart more.

    • @Marco-kn8rg
      @Marco-kn8rg 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gentlmentlmngreat analysis, I might add that the 556A makes less noticeable the extremely short hands due to the less negative space. I had the 556i and changed It to the A only because of this, I could not stand those tiny hands, IMHO i think It is as if they were designed for the A diam

    I have the 556ib (indices in blue) and (for me) it’s beautiful and there’s nothing boring about it. In fact, it catches peoples’ eyes because of the remarkably clear crystal, the stunning blue dial, and the gorgeous applied indices. And yeah, it’s straightforward and simple but far from boring.

    I like the dial styling but I never noticed the 430 date window before and I love a 430 date since it doesn't take away an hour marker. I also have a similar wrist size and love the 39mm give or take size depending on the lug to lug

    Well said and felt.
    I've owned 2 of the same Sinn 104i white dial. I keep thinking I will open another 104. I think besides your Sinn model family you presented here, if you could go with an extra feature such as a timing bezel, the 104 and U50 are excellent, as well, to be that easy to read purpose built tool watch. They are both 41mm, but they wear surprisingly smaller than started dimensions and does it very well.
    I do have a Sinn and it's that 103 Klassik 12 you featured on your channel not that long ago. It's a bit more beastly in scale compared to the other watches I've mentioned. But, it wears better than thickness dimensions may indicate. And, it definitely makes me feel like I have a handsome quality chronograph from Sinn.

    A few months ago my friend and I were talking about his super clone "Rolex" watch. The conversation turned to what my favourite watch is. So I grabbed the Sinn catalog (more like a book TBH) I happend to have. I showed him the 656 I have been lusting after. Later that evening I saw that I had ordered said catalog in 2007. I have been looking at that 656 for over 14 years... With the 656 being discontinued for some years and having the funds needed, I bought myself a 556A. No regrets whatsoever, what a brilliant watch. I love the high contrast dial/hands combination and the total lack of superfluous clutter. The date is there when you need it but it draws no attention to it. It's bold and very legible. Boring is good with this watch.

    Thank you for your excellent and intelligent review. I own the 556a with the bracelet, too. I debated getting the 556i, which I also like, but this was the look I wanted. The satinized finish gives the watch a toolish, yet attractive quality, and it fits great on my 6 1/2 inch wrist. Importantly, it keeps great time, too, approx +3 per day. As for the small date, I know where to find it, and I find it when I need it. I like that it doesn't dominate the dial. Also, as you said, the legibility is among the best to be found, and that's important to me. The 556 series (and other Sinns) are very well built watches, so it would be hard to go wrong with whichever Sinn one might choose.

    I've got two 556, the Mother of Pearl and the blue, and they are perfect daily, I love them, they are like jewels and competing easy with my other much more expensive watches.
    Unlike you, Peter, I don't like the H links bracelet, I find it too brutal, but i admit that your 556A fits better on this bracelet.
    Thus, I suggest you'd give a try on a rugged NATO strap, it's giving a new dimension to this model.

    Outstanding content - that’s how a watch should be reviewed, with a personal touch. It’s such a subjective hobby that approaching reviews subjectively makes total sense. As a brief aside - it’s not a divers extension, but rather a flight suit extension. I’ve used the extension on mine (556i on h-Link) to pop it over my jacket sleeve when hiking in cold temps. Saves using a nato which I’m not a massive fan of.

  • @Spit87
    @Spit87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Agree with everything you said! I've owned one for a couple of years and it's perfect. I find it's one of those rare watches that you might not be able to understand it's appeal until you have it in hand and try it on. I also have just finally got my hands on the new 2021 Speedmaster and was planning on selling the 556a to put the funds towards that.....but I find myself unable to let go of the Sinn, and might even enjoy wearing that a tad more than the Speedie. What is going on!?
    Ps. Without a bezel, 38.5mm is the ultimate size for a sports watch

    That’s why I like my Movado Luno Sport, The most simple time teller doesn’t even have a second hand. After my Fitbit blaze craziness and insanity, I was relieved to get it, just simple.

    • @erwinl1007
      @erwinl1007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Movado Luno Sport might be beautiful stylishly, but it is not a good watch functionally. It has no indices, little to none water resistance, and has a quartz watch movement, and not to mention a horrible price tag. Thanks for mentioning it, it reminded us not to buy this movado watch in any given circumtances. Might be a harsh comment here but i have watched enough of Peter’s videos to understand what feature is still necessary in a watch. Do enjoy wearing it in great health.

    • @RJtoon1

      @@erwinl1007 oh spare me! You think this is my only watch? Takes about three days to learn how to read a Movado watch. Anyone with half a brain can do it and that includes you. I don’t need some condescending watch snob telling me what I should buy, It’s subjective so don’t go around telling other people what to do! I don’t go around telling you what kind of car to buy or what to name your kids.
      I saw your list of favourite watches and for your information there’s other types of watches that are not all dive watches, they all have a purpose. So don’t be so single minded.
      So basically don’t be a troll dissing somebody’s opinion or choice and then apologize thinking that makes it OK, And then you hide behind the fact you “learned enough from Peter” to know what a good watch is. I don’t think Peter would recommend going around dissing on other peoples watch choice purchases in here!! I have heard him say 1 million times the word “subjective.” So you are not the be-all end all.
      “Functionally,” it has been flawless. Just because YOU need hour markers to help you figure out the time doesn’t mean other people can’t read it, it’s the cleanest dial known to man.
      “Oh I’m so sorry to be harsh but that’s my opinion”
      “No video content” created by you, yeah that tells me everything. If you want to fight so bad go to Ukraine or become a politician. I would never pay full retail on a $1050 watch Cdn price! But THANK YOU for being so CONCERNED ABOUT MY FINANCES! So if you don’t know something, don’t speculate and diss man not cool. OH NO ITS A QUARTZ WATCH!!!!! I wanted a quartz for a quick “grab and go” but you never bothered to ask me about that did you!? When I want your opinion I will give it to you.

    As another proud 556a owner i totally agree with all the feelings you've described. But would disagree about the lume not long lasting: the deep black background compensates for not the brightest lume. So C1-lume turned out to be not as big of a problem, as i initially thought. It easily lasted though the darkest nights and even the dimmest moonlight is plenty enough to distinguish the sterile white markers and all three hands. Perhaps this watch would only benefit, if the second hand was coated like Stowa and Laco fliegers tend to have... I've seen some Sinn enthusiasts modded their 556's that way.

    It's great fun hearing you talk about this so passionately. This time, with respect and appreciation for all your arguments, especially the things regarding the industrial aesthetic, reliability, utility and practicality, for me, as a graphical design piece, it is mainly just big and brash. And because there is little visual appeal on the dial and the emphasised all-metal look is rather monothetic in its continuous satin surface, I'll also grant you the boring! In fact the diminutive date is one of the more interesting things about it, but I don't find it effective or appealing. You refer to the chocolate dial Sinn, and on that model I am convinced of the utilitarian elegance. Most of all though, my remarks here just reveal that where I appreciate sports watches, I always sit on the dressier side of the fence. I'm not sure if I'd ever be in a situation where I feel that need my watch to be that much of a tool.
