I remember watching this in 94/95 eating McVities Gems from Tesco, at the age of 4/5. Even to this day, the wipeout sound fills me with this dread by nostalgic feeling, absolutely love it!
For me, this was the superior version of Wipeout. Fast and furious, right to the point and with some awesome sound and visuals. The Bob Monkhouse version was more sluggish. Actually, to be fair, it did give you a better chance to play along at home. The whizzy Paul Daniels version made it difficult to get a good look at the board and have a think. But the most annoying thing I found with the Bob Monkhouse version, and I'm sorry to criticise the master, was that he would always pre-empt the board and virtually tell you whether the answer was right or wrong, before it was actually revealed. It took away the suspense of the Wipeouts.
This exactly. It feels so wrong to ever suggest that the Bob Monkhouse version of anything isn’t the definitive version, but when it comes to Wipeout the later version is inferior in pretty much every respect. The only thing that was a slight improvement was the endgame, with the buttons being on the screens themselves rather then that white panel that some contestants never seemed to really understand. But otherwise it’s like the whole production team made a decision to make it as boring as possible.
It seems fast and furious but perhaps it's because these Challenge TV versions have been edited to within an inch of their life - originally on BBC1 they would have run to about 27-28 minutes, but on Challenge they needed time for an ad-break, hence why it's down to 22:50.

The voiceover artist is Kara Noble, who was at the time a co-presenter on Capital FM's radio breakfast show.
A simple game concept but fun to watch and play as well, I would imagine. Paul did a fine job with this first iteration of the show
