Our reporter gained access inside some such 'juvies', and met with minors in the system. In Utah, the authorities are rethinking the conditions of detaining minors. In Texas, on the other hand, the principle is simple: major crime, major penalty. No excuses. Either way, the US justice system is very strict against crimes committed by juveniles.
Why go hard on a first time juvenile,he is just going to get worse. Teach them ,work with them ,an hour a week exercise is inhumane ,90% of the world's jails give you at least 2 hours a day 1 in the morning after breakfast and 1in the evening ✌️

You should always do your due diligence and investigate I know several people who would be on the other end of the spectrum where they blindly trust inmates/criminals over police

My daughter is a juvenile defense attorney in Baltimore. She has dedicated her life to serving these young kids navigate their way through the system fairly. Most of them, neatly all of them, come from terrifying family situations where the parents are on drugs, incarcerated or just very poor. They are in bad school systems and can’t afford the things they need to go to school. They struggle with parents who abuse them and mental instability, along with many different diagnosis they can’t get help for. They are lost with no guide. My daughter recently spoke before the legislature on behalf of these kids, begging the laws be changed so that when a kid is arrested, they must have an attorney present before being questioned. The law passed and on my daughters first weekend being on call for a juvenile suspect, she got a call that the suspect was 12 years old and being charged with murder of his father. My daughter told him not to speak. He didn’t. I’m time it was revealed the kid was being sexually abused by his father for years. The kid broke. Thank God he had representation and people like my daughter are there to fight for the rights of kids like this. My daughter says she does not want kids as the kids she represents are like her own. She is a beautiful light in this dark world and I thank God for her and her mission everyday.
Students who get their act together and prove to the court they learned and have taken steps to correct their lives they can ask the judge to seal their record. It’s up to them if it destroys the rest of their life. I highly doubt that this is this kids first time in trouble. Teenagers are being allowed to go on birth control, have abortions, take hormone supplants, medical castration, change their gender all without their parents knowledge. If they can make those type of life altering decisions they are certainly capable of being held responsible for assault. Toddlers know that there are consequences for hitting someone. I can’t understand and hope I never understand people who think it’s wrong to hold teenagers accountable for violence on other people or property.
Felt SO BAD for the guy Austin. They didn't even care for the torture and humiliation done by his dad. They directly sentenced him for bloody 40 years, this is RIDICULOUS. When he'll be released at the age of 55 he won't be able to connect to the real world, everything will look unfamiliar to him. 40 years sentence is WAY TOO LONG. He'll have to spend the golden time of his life in prison? I don't know, but I'm feeling like crying for this young lad. 😭😭😭😭😭

to be fair, she was talking to the kids. So she probably wanted to scare the kids by having that vile attitude. With that said, the thing that bugs me the most was actually at the beginning 2:25 where she made it clear that dehumanization and humiliation is the best method. And I love that the documentary shortly point out that her way doesn't work.
The minor that killed his father was screwed by a lazy court appointed attorney. If he was being beaten daily and he finally lost it, a Texas jury would have shown mercy. He might have gotten something but nothing like 40 years. The justice system is so scary because it is so very far from flawless. I hate to even think about how many innocent people there are sitting in prisons around our country.
I'm lucky to have been born in western Europe. In my country, the Netherlands, we don't have a jury but instead we have three judges. A jury is easily swayed by emotion whereas the judges only listen to logic and what is the legal truth. If you don't have money for attorney you get one appointed by the government, this could mean you'll get an average skilled attorney but it could also just as well mean you get one of top 10 criminal attorneys in the country, as the appointed attorneys are basically random and I believe every attorneys office is obliged to do a fair share of these appointed cases a year. Also whenever you get an atyorney that forgets something or isn't doing his job properly, the judges makes sure to fix the mistakes so you will always have a fair trial.

I grew up in fostercare and spent time in juvenile detention, had loads of issues and didn't care if I lived or died. Luckily for me when I became a dad I made the changes in my life so my son never ended up with a life like I had. He's on his way to college a year early for engineering. Kids need people who care about them and not just saying I love you but showing with actions, taking the time to teach them. I never hid my childhood for my son but wanted him to learn from my mistakes and I couldn't be more proud. Sadly some people just have a bunch of kids and don't care about their future or think about what kind of life they will one day have if they aren't focused on education. If you focus on education early and put the time in younger, you'll be able to have a much better life when older, taking trips, not having to work for little pay. Makes me sad to see these kids. They're in jail for doing wrong but they never had a chance. They were robbed of childhoods at a very young age. If they can't learn now from this, they will end up a lifer or dead from street violence.
Exactly. Ran away from a abusive foster care and ended up having to be rescued by police on a mountain from there I was done could care less. I was lucky and turned my life around and my children never endured what I did.
it's disturbing that they let people like that work in prisons, in a position of total power over inmates. I believe prisons are full of psychopaths but they're not necessarily behind the bars...
American schools are giving me prison vibes. So bizarre to see since my schools were very relaxed. The only security we had, was usually 1 old lady keeping an eye on the students clothes in the hallway.

My heart hurts for these kids...I was adopted at age 3 by a minister's family....adopted mom hated me and beat me almost daily....my dad trained minister's so was gone alot...when he was home my mom acted like I was awesome...she was always threatening juvie..accusing me of drugs when I didn't even know what weed was til I was 20 yrs old....was always in my room due to trying to stay away from my mom...she even wrote me a 7 page hate letter saying I wasn't a dog she could return to the pound.....so was determined not to be a mom like her...my son when in 5th grade was staying off and on with his dad...leaving my son and daughter to get themselves to school til one day got called from the grade school that my son had been skipping school to play video games with his friend....he got truancy....he was in the back of a police car when I went to get him...5th grade and scared to death..option was truancy on his record which would damage him going to college someday....so instead of a fine ,truancy etc was to go to a weekend boot camp...he had to be there at 8am and was the youngest in the room...first day was classes to help control his anger etc...second was mowing older folks yards etc..the other boys looked out for him...after those two days which he even said was ok being there, never got in trouble again tho..but due to my abuse, stuck in my bdrm hiding under a blanket....mom running it like a military with a wire flyswatter to hit me with the wire end...would go to school with bruises...she broke my nose at around age 5 yrs old....she passed away but three yrs before she died she apologized for all the abuse...said she wish she had given me a chance and a mom like I was...told her she taught me what not to be....on full ssdi due to her with bone issues, severe anxiety stress disorder,depression,ptsd due to the abuse growing up...am 56 yrs old now and still trumatized from her abuse..my dad is 92 yrs old and still in denial about the abuse I went thru....wonders why I have the mental issues I have...I still stay in my room....watching this documentry hit home due to I was sent away last two yrs of high school...it's traumatizing...they need a better system to help these kids..locking them up for 40 yrs is just wrong etc
I can’t even imagine. I have been estranged from my dad since 2004. A major reason for it was due to accumulated abuse over the years, both physical and emotional. There are still some people who have tried to tell me that it wasn’t all that bad, and I always tell them they weren’t around all the time. This all started in first grade, and that was in 1983 and things happened on and off for years until in 2004 when I finally got the courage to stand up to him and tell him that I wasn’t anyone’s property, and that I couldn’t be forced to do anything. In my first grade year was when I really started to hate school, and things got worse over the years. I didn’t really appreciate school until high school when I was taken out of a school for the blind and put into public school. I went to a school for the blind for a few years, and I was glad to leave as my last year there it became more of a reform school with a level system as opposed to a regular school. What had brought that last final argument on was my mom had wanted me to try something and I had something else I had just started. This was after I left a training program for the blind that places people in with the IRS in a customer service job. As a whole, the early 2000’s were bad for me, and I even attempted suicide in 2008,and things finally got better after I moved out of state.

@@angelaschalz9937 it just so happens that everything I need is right near me in my room. This includes the phone and other pieces of entertainment. When I had cable, I could operate the TV in my living room in my bedroom. It is great. I am looking for work though, and hopefully will find something in 2023!
Ironic when they claim that there’s a zero tolerance against drugs in schools, but you find it easily in every prison! 😂 The “drug free units” are proof of their failure. The whole jail should of course be drug free!
Locked up 23 hours a day only allowed to get out during showers and only 1 hour in the week for recreation yeah wonder why there is so much aggression and mental health problems.

This is just insane... I grew up in a horrible environment. alcoholic mom, drug addict dad that died at 4, abusive step dads (I can go on and on). it ended in me, by the age of 12, stealing high value items and money from friends, girlfriend, strangers, a step dad and stores. one time someone found out it was me and I spend about a week talking with an officer trying to coerce me into admitting that I stole it, but I stood my ground and just denied. he eventually gave up and I learned that this is not the life I wanted to live. What got me on a good path of good grades, jobs, money and a very happy life was the idea that I could make something of myself out of the adversity. I ended up having TH-cam channels, businesses, tons of research and learning on the way. If I had gone to one of these programs or a prison like this, I doubt I'd ever really end up in a good place. It would feel like the end of the road, the same way I was feeling when I was doing all that stuff. I would immediately feel like my life is over and never stop.

They can arrest them at any time, without parents present. They just can’t question juveniles until they have a parent/guardian or attorney. They mentioned that the kid that was arrested under a warrant, at school for drugs, is not considered a juvenile any more. And what of the kids who are raping, murdering, stealing cars, breaking into houses & businesses, assaulting people unprovoked & robbing people with violence etc? Do you think they should not be arrested but just told not to do it again?
If I were put into that situation I would most likely have a panic attack and try to kill myself on the spot, not even joking. Whoever organized this should go to jail

It's meant to be a reality check, to show the teens what the conditions were (mostly) really like, and trying to convince them to stay off the wrong path. It's hard truths, but I'd imagine the program was created with good intentions. Those officers are psychos though.
This is the way a jail/prison is supposed to be like. Not like a 5 star prison resort. It's supposed to be so bad, that you will NEVER want to go there again. Not an AC climate controlled, 3 meals a day bulls__t!!!! How are you to learn in an environment like that?!? You get a place that is safe (as far as jail/prison goes), central AC, nice bed to sleep on (as far as a metal bed with a piece of foam to sleep on), relative security for violence, get to go outside for a time. Real jails are nowhere near that level of privilege. Jail is punishment, not 5 star resort hotels. Clean floors, walls, smell good. That is why, I believe, is the reason people go in and out. Like I said before, jail/prison is supposed to be nasty, cramped, hot, insect/rodent infested. It's punishment, not a resort vacation!!!!
because by the point theyre placed in custody theyve had numerous chances to shape up, jail for juveniles is legit the last line a judge will take unless the charge is a serious felony charge
@@gryphon8023 yes, but they are children still. There is no rehabilitation in this type of punishment. Since the ability to think long-term isn't fully developed until 25/26 years of age, this only makes them more angry, more willing to act out. They need opportunities to better their lives with therapy, education, support. They do not need to be locked alone in a small room.

It leads to them being life-long offenders who never learn how to manage their emotions. This also harms fully developed adults in major ways, what makes you think that it wouldn't do permanent damage to a child?
I don't understand how putting these kids in jail is going to help. These kids can't sign a legal binding contract,. We think it's a good idea to put them with adults! We should be ashamed of our jail system.
It's really troubling to see this video. A kid got in a fight with another kid because of a girl. This is wrong, but instead of putting him on probation, making him do community service and getting professional help (therapy), they instead make sure this kid has this placed on his record for life... which prevents him from going to college, getting a job or doing anything that is productive to society. Basically what they do almost ensures that he goes to jail as an adult. One of the kids I grew up with used to get in trouble in his teen years, used to be in a gang, used drugs, etc... Today he is married, has a child, and is a registered nurse. Had they kept those records from his teen years and put them on his adult record, he probably would be in jail today. Teenage boys without fathers are a serious social issue in America... and let's not forget the fact that their brains do not fully develop until the age of 25... This is why guys under the age of 25 are more likely to take huge risks.
While I agree everyone should be held accountable, housing a child with adults is a recipe for future turmoil for the child. Nothing positive can come from that. Kids should be with kids

My parents threatened to send me to one of these. Why? My mother was beating me up every day while my Dad was at work and telling him that I was hitting her. I was defending myself and trying to stay out of her way. I was so tired of it that I told them that I did NOT care where they sent me. Since I hadn't broken any laws, their little plan didn't work. Eventually, they lost custody of me for abuse. They kept me out of school AND work, wouldn't feed me, my mother's beatings got so much worse.... But God saved my life by letting my Grandparents get custody of me. I got to to school where I was on the Honor Roll, work where I excelled, graduated, got my DL, 2 speeding tickets in my whole life. Got married and have been married for 26 years. I miss my Grandparents every day of my life. I thank God for them and the 2 hospitals that saw the abuse. My bio-mother has narcissistic borderline personality disorder. She hasn't spoken to me in 24 years. This is best for everyone. I don't ever need to see her again.

@@RandysRides The same strength putting into believing that there is no God is far more strenuous than believing. I had a hard time coming to grips with it too man. And I did question God. We're not to question God but I did. He showed me by putting me in a place where I could help children one on one who were being neglected and abused, parents on drugs etc.... I fed and took care of them. When they watched their Dads died from ODs, I was there. The one thing they always wanted to know was if their parent was in Heaven. I'm so sorry that you went through that my dude. You didn't deserve any of it. I didn't deserve it. We didn't deserve it. No one deserves it. Big hugs. You're making it so as you do, make it right. In the US a person is considered too young and immature to consume alcohol or tobacco until the age of 21. The scientific research says their brains aren’t fully developed. The US laws regarding “minors” are completely hypocritical. Juveniles cannot make decisions regarding substances, they cannot sign a contract because their brains aren’t developed, but juveniles can be treated as adults by the criminal justice system. And the jails are supposed to be for people awaiting trial. They have not been found guilty. I don’t think folks in jail should be living high on the jog, but basic accommodations should be provided. People shouldn’t be sleeping on the floor. They shouldn’t have to huddle together to stay warm…

I remember when I was almost sent to a Psychiatric hospital by my school principal without letting me explain my story which caused me to follow the dark path and become the person I am my parents stopped them from sending me there they got me help and I have been getting better slowly recovery is brutal but is the only way I can heal from everything I been through I hate how broken the system is instead of helping someone you break they destroy them even more badly I also was nearly sent to juvenile for beating multiple students in self-defense they physically and mentally abused me for two years straight my life was made a living hell I had to starve to death cause they would throw my food away and none of the security guards would care so many horrors happened and I even told the school principal multiple times to save me from them but they didn’t believe me but when I had enough of everything I am the monster I never did smoking, vaping, drugs, skip school, or anything bad was a good student and had good grades but I had terrible mental health and physical problems from the abuse I didn’t tell my parents in fear of being caught by my bullies they got away with everything and I had live with everything I hope the system changes to stop cases like mines from happening instead of helping the victims they help the monsters escape from there crimes I wanna break down in frustration as this is way to common nobody cares about us victims into we have enough of it and we stand our ground
My heart broke when I saw the 13 year old boy Mike have a meltdown about not having melatonin because I know what it’s like to have so serious sleeping problems that you need a combination of different pills in order to sleep even a little. I have 5 different meds for sleeping that I take every night plus melatonin which isn’t really a medicine, it’s a hormone that helps you with sleeping and your body actually makes melatonin so yeah. But the point was that I really felt that kid’s pain. I really hope the best for him.
The other problem is each state or judge/ jury all have different punishments/ prison sentences, which is ridiculous. One person can get 1 year and another doing the same gets 40 years?!??!
It wouldn’t be as ridiculous, if people would go and vote like they should. But a bunch of people don’t unless it’s a presidential or congressional election. A lot of state laws are passed by the state legislature representatives that are often elected on off year election cycles. As well as passing state mandated laws on those cycles. In fact just about every state does this doesn’t matter which party is in control. They really do count on people not coming to vote especially the opposition to whatever they are trying to pass into law quietly.
I've always said I'm NOT the same person mentally after getting myself locked up...! My longest time locked up was 284 days in Sarasota County jail in Florida... I'm 66+ months sober now from a 22+ year long heroine addiction and got locked up too much back then...! It 100% changes your brain...!

This system is creating damage to help kids reach a potential where they can be at their best. Limitations likes these for a fight is crazy. I can see if a kid murdered or severely injured someone then I can see where they need to be incarcerated. Why not help open doors and deter kids from crime instead? I do like the drug free programs and keep encouraging children to attend classes to graduate and go towards a higher goal to reach for success. Programs that distract kids from crime have been found more successful than the prison programs. I agree with the rehabilitation programs because evaluating the entire situation may pose an insight not looked into previous times. A prime example of the boy that is in prison for murdering his father after surviving life long abuse from his father. That is self defense at its finest. The kid 25:20 based on his body language he has anger issues that need resolving. There are flaws there too such as teaching about DNA easy way for them to think of ways to attempt to get away with a crime. Point system for good behavior is good.

I believe that Austin got the very bad end of the deal. Maybe 15 years, but 40 YEARS??? THIS young man was physically, mentally, and EMOTIONALLY ABUSED by HIS OWN DAD. Exactly! DOC’s make over $7k a month in my town and they feed the inmates bologna sandwiches and release the addicts back to the streets early- days before treatment starts… just so they can be re-incarcerated when they relapse before making it to treatment. Insanity.
Meditation & relaxation exercises should be used in all prison systems & schools. Even workplaces. Until you actually do it (& often enough to really be able to relax your body & mind), you don’t realise how much tension you constantly hold in your body.
😂😂😂 Glad that works for you! It doesn't work for everyone. A lot of people use exercise for stress relief. Personally, I'd be pretty ticked off if someone cornered me and made me "meditate and do relaxation exercises".

As much as I believe in holding them accountable for their actions, they're also minors. They need guidance, they need positive role models and giving a kid a criminal record over a fist fight is wild. I do think we should have more scare programs or reality check programs, teach them there is real life consequence to their actions and yes there are some kids or minors who commit atrocious acts and should be treated appropriately but a lot of times those minors didn't have examples that would keep them from places like Jail and all that. That sheriff just blindly believing their officers over the minors is crazy. Do proper investigations, get as much information as you can and make an informed decision there are a lot of things that can go wrong with just accepting whatever they report.
It would be good if all the young offenders places like the one in Utah can be spread out nationwide. I feel hard prison for young people isn’t effective

Our reporter gained access inside some such 'juvies', and met with minors in the system. In Utah, the authorities are rethinking the conditions of detaining minors. In Texas, on the other hand, the principle is simple: major crime, major penalty. No excuses. Either way, the US justice system is very strict against crimes committed by juveniles.
I would think that both Texas and Utah would be really getting strict on things seeing as these are both rather conservative states.
Why go hard on a first time juvenile,he is just going to get worse. Teach them ,work with them ,an hour a week exercise is inhumane ,90% of the world's jails give you at least 2 hours a day 1 in the morning after breakfast and 1in the evening ✌️

My daughter is a juvenile defense attorney in Baltimore. She has dedicated her life to serving these young kids navigate their way through the system fairly. Most of them, neatly all of them, come from terrifying family situations where the parents are on drugs, incarcerated or just very poor. They are in bad school systems and can’t afford the things they need to go to school. They struggle with parents who abuse them and mental instability, along with many different diagnosis they can’t get help for. They are lost with no guide. My daughter recently spoke before the legislature on behalf of these kids, begging the laws be changed so that when a kid is arrested, they must have an attorney present before being questioned. The law passed and on my daughters first weekend being on call for a juvenile suspect, she got a call that the suspect was 12 years old and being charged with murder of his father. My daughter told him not to speak. He didn’t. I’m time it was revealed the kid was being sexually abused by his father for years. The kid broke. Thank God he had representation and people like my daughter are there to fight for the rights of kids like this. My daughter says she does not want kids as the kids she represents are like her own. She is a beautiful light in this dark world and I thank God for her and her mission everyday.

Students who get their act together and prove to the court they learned and have taken steps to correct their lives they can ask the judge to seal their record. It’s up to them if it destroys the rest of their life. I highly doubt that this is this kids first time in trouble.
Teenagers are being allowed to go on birth control, have abortions, take hormone supplants, medical castration, change their gender all without their parents knowledge. If they can make those type of life altering decisions they are certainly capable of being held responsible for assault. Toddlers know that there are consequences for hitting someone.

Felt SO BAD for the guy Austin. They didn't even care for the torture and humiliation done by his dad. They directly sentenced him for bloody 40 years, this is RIDICULOUS. When he'll be released at the age of 55 he won't be able to connect to the real world, everything will look unfamiliar to him. 40 years sentence is WAY TOO LONG. The minor that killed his father was screwed by a lazy court appointed attorney. If he was being beaten daily and he finally lost it, a Texas jury would have shown mercy. He might have gotten something but nothing like 40 years. The justice system is so scary because it is so very far from flawless. I hate to even think about how many innocent people there are sitting in prisons around our country.
I'm lucky to have been born in western Europe. In my country, the Netherlands, we don't have a jury but instead we have three judges. A jury is easily swayed by emotion whereas the judges only listen to logic and what is the legal truth.
If you don't have money for attorney you get one appointed by the government, this could mean you'll get an average skilled attorney but it could also just as well mean you get one of top 10 criminal attorneys in the country, as the appointed attorneys are basically random and I believe every attorneys office is obliged to do a fair share of these appointed cases a year.
Also whenever you get an atyorney that forgets something or isn't doing his job properly, the judges makes sure to fix the mistakes so you will always have a fair trial.

I grew up in fostercare and spent time in juvenile detention, had loads of issues and didn't care if I lived or died. Luckily for me when I became a dad I made the changes in my life so my son never ended up with a life like I had. He's on his way to college a year early for engineering. Kids need people who care about them and not just saying I love you but showing with actions, taking the time to teach them. I never hid my childhood for my son but wanted him to learn from my mistakes and I couldn't be more proud. Sadly some people just have a bunch of kids and don't care about their future or think about what kind of life they will one day have if they aren't focused on education. If you focus on education early and put the time in younger, you'll be able to have a much better life when older, taking trips, not having to work for little pay. Makes me sad to see these kids. They're in jail for doing wrong but they never had a chance. They were robbed of childhoods at a very young age. If they can't learn now from this, they will end up a lifer or dead from street violence.
Exactly. Ran away from a abusive foster care and ended up having to be rescued by police on a mountain from there I was done could care less. I was lucky and turned my life around and my children never endured what I did.

My heart hurts for these kids...I was adopted at age 3 by a minister's family....adopted mom hated me and beat me almost daily....my dad trained minister's so was gone alot...when he was home my mom acted like I was awesome...she was always threatening juvie..accusing me of drugs when I didn't even know what weed was til I was 20 yrs old....was always in my room due to trying to stay away from my mom...she even wrote me a 7 page hate letter saying I wasn't a dog she could return to the pound.....so was determined not to be a mom like her...my son when in 5th grade was staying off and on with his dad...leaving my son and daughter to get themselves to school til one day got called from the grade school that my son had been skipping school to play video games with his friend....he got truancy....he was in the back of a police car when I went to get him...5th grade and scared to death..option was truancy on his record which would damage him going to college someday....so instead of a fine ,truancy etc was to go to a weekend boot camp...he had to be there at 8am and was the youngest in the room...first day was classes to help control his anger etc...second was mowing older folks yards etc..the other boys looked out for him...after those two days which he even said was ok being there, never got in trouble again tho..but due to my abuse, stuck in my bdrm hiding under a blanket....mom running it like a military with a wire flyswatter to hit me with the wire end...would go to school with bruises...she broke my nose at around age 5 yrs old....she passed away but three yrs before she died she apologized for all the abuse...said she wish she had given me a chance and a mom like I was...told her she taught me what not to be....on full ssdi due to her with bone issues, severe anxiety stress disorder,depression,ptsd due to the abuse growing up...am 56 yrs old now and still trumatized from her abuse..my dad is 92 yrs old and still in denial about the abuse I went thru....wonders why I have the mental issues I have...I still stay in my room....watching this documentry hit home due to I was sent away last two yrs of high school...it's traumatizing...they need a better system to help these kids..locking them up for 40 yrs is just wrong etc

I can’t even imagine. I have been estranged from my dad since 2004. A major reason for it was due to accumulated abuse over the years, both physical and emotional. There are still some people who have tried to tell me that it wasn’t all that bad, and I always tell them they weren’t around all the time. This all started in first grade, and that was in 1983 and things happened on and off for years until in 2004 when I finally got the courage to stand up to him and tell him that I wasn’t anyone’s property, and that I couldn’t be forced to do anything. In my first grade year was when I really started to hate school, and things got worse over the years. I didn’t really appreciate school until high school when I was taken out of a school for the blind and put into public school. I went to a school for the blind for a few years, and I was glad to leave as my last year there it became more of a reform school with a level system as opposed to a regular school. What had brought that last final argument on was my mom had wanted me to try something and I had something else I had just started. This was after I left a training program for the blind that places people in with the IRS in a customer service job. As a whole, the early 2000’s were bad for me, and I even attempted suicide in 2008,and things finally got better after I moved out of state.

This is just insane... I grew up in a horrible environment. alcoholic mom, drug addict dad that died at 4, abusive step dads (I can go on and on). it ended in me, by the age of 12, stealing high value items and money from friends, girlfriend, strangers, a step dad and stores. one time someone found out it was me and I spend about a week talking with an officer trying to coerce me into admitting that I stole it, but I stood my ground and just denied. he eventually gave up and I learned that this is not the life I wanted to live.
What got me on a good path of good grades, jobs, money and a very happy life was the idea that I could make something of myself out of the adversity. I ended up having TH-cam channels, businesses, tons of research and learning on the way. If I had gone to one of these programs or a prison like this, I doubt I'd ever really end up in a good place. It would feel like the end of the road, the same way I was feeling when I was doing all that stuff. I would immediately feel like my life is over and never stop.

It's meant to be a reality check, to show the teens what the conditions were (mostly) really like, and trying to convince them to stay off the wrong path. It's hard truths, but I'd imagine the program was created with good intentions.

This is the way a jail/prison is supposed to be like. Not like a 5 star prison resort. It's supposed to be so bad, that you will NEVER want to go there again. Not an AC climate controlled, 3 meals a day bulls__t!!!! How are you to learn in an environment like that?!? You get a place that is safe (as far as jail/prison goes), central AC, nice bed to sleep on (as far as a metal bed with a piece of foam to sleep on), relative security for violence, get to go outside for a time. Real jails are nowhere near that level of privilege. Jail is punishment, not 5 star resort hotels. Clean floors, walls, smell good. That is why, I believe, is the reason people go in and out. Like I said before, jail/prison is supposed to be nasty, cramped, hot, insect/rodent infested. It's punishment, not a resort vacation!!!!

Since the ability to think long-term isn't fully developed until 25/26 years of age, this only makes them more angry, more willing to act out. They need opportunities to better their lives with therapy, education, support. They do not need to be locked alone in a small room.

It's really troubling to see this video. A kid got in a fight with another kid because of a girl. This is wrong, but instead of putting him on probation, making him do community service and getting professional help (therapy), they instead make sure this kid has this placed on his record for life... which prevents him from going to college, getting a job or doing anything that is productive to society. Basically what they do almost ensures that he goes to jail as an adult. One of the kids I grew up with used to get in trouble in his teen years, used to be in a gang, used drugs, etc... Today he is married, has a child, and is a registered nurse. Had they kept those records from his teen years and put them on his adult record, he probably would be in jail today. Teenage boys without fathers are a serious social issue in America... and let's not forget the fact that their brains do not fully develop until the age of 25... This is why guys under the age of 25 are more likely to take huge risks.

Hobbies are important. After school programs are important too. Give them something to do watch who their friends are.
My parents threatened to send me to one of these. Why? My mother was beating me up every day while my Dad was at work and telling him that I was hitting her. I was defending myself and trying to stay out of her way.
I was so tired of it that I told them that I did NOT care where they sent me. Since I hadn't broken any laws, their little plan didn't work.
Eventually, they lost custody of me for abuse. They kept me out of school AND work, wouldn't feed me, my mother's beatings got so much worse....
But God saved my life by letting my Grandparents get custody of me. I got to to school where I was on the Honor Roll, work where I excelled, graduated, got my DL, 2 speeding tickets in my whole life. Got married and have been married for 26 years.
I miss my Grandparents every day of my life. I thank God for them and the 2 hospitals that saw the abuse. My bio-mother has narcissistic borderline personality disorder. She hasn't spoken to me in 24 years. This is best for everyone. I don't ever need to see her again.

We're not to question God but I did. He showed me by putting me in a place where I could help children one on one who were being neglected and abused, parents on drugs etc.... I fed and took care of them. When they watched their Dads died from ODs, I was there. The one thing they always wanted to know was if their parent was in Heaven.

In the US a person is considered too young and immature to consume alcohol or tobacco until the age of 21. The scientific research says their brains aren’t fully developed. The US laws regarding “minors” are completely hypocritical. Juveniles cannot make decisions regarding substances, they cannot sign a contract because their brains aren’t developed, but juveniles can be treated as adults by the criminal justice system. And the jails are supposed to be for people awaiting trial. They have not been found guilty. I don’t think folks in jail should be living high on the jog, but basic accommodations should be provided. People shouldn’t be sleeping on the floor. They shouldn’t have to huddle together to stay warm…
So you think that a teen should be let go if they commit a crime, what if they murder someone? Still think it’s absurd.

I remember when I was almost sent to a Psychiatric hospital by my school principal without letting me explain my story which caused me to follow the dark path and become the person I am my parents stopped them from sending me there they got me help and I have been getting better slowly recovery is brutal but is the only way I can heal from everything I been through I hate how broken the system is instead of helping someone you break they destroy them even more badly I also was nearly sent to juvenile for beating multiple students in self-defense they physically and mentally abused me for two years straight my life was made a living hell I had to starve to death cause they would throw my food away and none of the security guards would care so many horrors happened and I even told the school principal multiple times to save me from them but they didn’t believe me but when I had enough of everything I am the monster I never did smoking, vaping, drugs, skip school, or anything bad was a good student and had good grades but I had terrible mental health and physical problems from the abuse I didn’t tell my parents in fear of being caught by my bullies they got away with everything and I had live with everything I hope the system changes to stop cases like mines from happening instead of helping the victims they help the monsters escape from there crimes I wanna break down in frustration as this is way to common nobody cares about us victims into we have enough of it and we stand our ground

My heart broke when I saw the 13 year old boy Mike have a meltdown about not having melatonin because I know what it’s like to have so serious sleeping problems that you need a combination of different pills in order to sleep even a little. I have 5 different meds for sleeping that I take every night plus melatonin which isn’t really a medicine, it’s a hormone that helps you with sleeping and your body actually makes melatonin so yeah. But the point was that I really felt that kid’s pain. I really hope the best for him.

The other problem is each state or judge/ jury all have different punishments/ prison sentences, which is ridiculous. One person can get 1 year and another doing the same gets 40 years?!??!
It wouldn’t be as ridiculous, if people would go and vote like they should. But a bunch of people don’t unless it’s a presidential or congressional election. A lot of state laws are passed by the state legislature representatives that are often elected on off year election cycles. As well as passing state mandated laws on those cycles. In fact just about every state does this doesn’t matter which party is in control. They really do count on people not coming to vote especially the opposition to whatever they are trying to pass into law quietly.
I've always said I'm NOT the same person mentally after getting myself locked up...! My longest time locked up was 284 days in Sarasota County jail in Florida... I'm 66+ months sober now from a 22+ year long heroine addiction and got locked up too much back then...! It 100% changes your brain...!

This system is creating damage to help kids reach a potential where they can be at their best. Limitations likes these for a fight is crazy. I can see if a kid murdered or severely injured someone then I can see where they need to be incarcerated. Why not help open doors and deter kids from crime instead? I do like the drug free programs and keep encouraging children to attend classes to graduate and go towards a higher goal to reach for success. Programs that distract kids from crime have been found more successful than the prison programs. I agree with the rehabilitation programs because evaluating the entire situation may pose an insight not looked into previous times. A prime example of the boy that is in prison for murdering his father after surviving life long abuse from his father. That is self defense at its finest. The kid 25:20 based on his body language he has anger issues that need resolving. There are flaws there too such as teaching about DNA easy way for them to think of ways to attempt to get away with a crime. Point system for good behavior is good.
They are really proud of this. Has it affected crime? I doubt it. Look at how crowded that place is.

Meditation & relaxation exercises should be used in all prison systems & schools. Even workplaces. Until you actually do it (& often enough to really be able to relax your body & mind), you don’t realise how much tension you constantly hold in your body.

As much as I believe in holding them accountable for their actions, they're also minors. They need guidance, they need positive role models and giving a kid a criminal record over a fist fight is wild. I do think we should have more scare programs or reality check programs, teach them there is real life consequence to their actions and yes there are some kids or minors who commit atrocious acts and should be treated appropriately but a lot of times those minors didn't have examples that would keep them from places like Jail and all that. That sheriff just blindly believing their officers over the minors is crazy. Do proper investigations, get as much information as you can and make an informed decision there are a lot of things that can go wrong with just accepting whatever they report.

it’s insane that they’ll give kids criminal records for just fights. kids fight it’s just something that happens. it’s a teaching moment not a moment to ruin their life. same for drugs and theft. it’s something a lot of teens end up doing and it’s something they need help with not punishment. they’ll just reoffend in the future when treated like this.

She went from a kind, giving Atheist, who would help anyone who needed a hand-up, as long as they were willing to help themselves, to a mean, racist Christian, who won't help anybody unless they look and act just like her. It's hard to even talk to her.
