  • Video of a young Mark Ruffalo acting and being passionately shouted at by legendary acting teacher
    Stella Adler in acting class for not wearing the a costume that fit the scene.
    I do not own this footage and will not be making any money off it. I’m sharing this clip for educational purposes and to aid aspiring actors by showing a great actor as he formed himself as a performer.
    Stellar Adler was an icon teacher who worked with Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Harvey Kitel and many more legendary actors

    This is amazing. What clear, tough love she gave him here. Everything she said here is the absolute truth - total commitment to whatever you're doing - and he obviously took it to heart. He learned the lesson she was giving him - his career as an actor now is a living testament to what she says here.

    One of the best and most influential teachers of acting in America. She really studied Stanislavski and she disagreed with purely method acting. BTW, she could be veery warm and appreciative if you did a good job. I have rarely seen someone who had such insight and understanding of writers like she did.

      I always felt Stella was so so. Made some good points...sometimes. I studied with most of them. And Stella didn't really study with Stanislvaski, she went to Moscow to get a better sense from him about the system, she was there not quite a month. That's not really studying with someone. You don't go to stella for one month and say you studied with her. The problem with all of that approach talk is people like stella was full of it. Instead of just accepting people were different in their way, she went out of her primmadonna way to bash Strasberg. And I'd say there's been more greater actors that came out of Strasberg/Actor's Studio than Stella's school.
      And this is where so many don't really have a concept of what all that means. What is 'purely Method acting'? Do you know? There's no such thing. I studied with Strasberg, as well as Uta Hagen. Strasberg was the most complete. He didn't have 'one way'. He tried everything, and had many tools/techniques, not just one. From Improvisation, relaxation, sense memory, animal exercises, song and dance, emotional recall....and more. Media and the public have made his way just about emotional recall/affective memory. When he himself said only use that as a last resort, if nothing else is working. And it never was about using something 'traumatic' from one's real life. It was to find something that would trigger the same effect, 'without' going into a real traumatic situation. His approach has been bastardized. And he was the closest to Stanislavsky, in philosophy of acting. Both Strasberg never liked the term Method, media created that,and it stuck. He said then it's like there's one Method, one way. And Stanislavsky said similar. He didn't call it Stanislavsky 'system', others put 'system' there. He kept changing, adding on different tools, techniques. When he taught beginner classes, he started out by saying during this course I'm going to give you a variety of tools that hopefully will make you a great actor. Eventually you will find your own way, what works for you, and have your own unique system. I don't really have a step by step system. I have tools. You create your own unique approach. And Strasberg said similar. For yrs he was asked to write a book on acting, which later on he eventually did, but he kept saying I don't want to do that, because then it will be like the actor's 'bible', meaning you have to follow this way. And I have no one way. I'm constantly changing or finding new techniques. Sorry, didn't mean to write a dissertation, haven't written about acting in a long time, just went off on a tangent

      Not her personally... (I'm not that old)... Took classes from her students that became acting instructors...
      I have a Love/Hate relationship with the way she taught Acting...
      IN her day... The Acting Director/teacher was or could be Harsh... Yelling... Cussing and she did to that on many occasions...
      I one of her videos... she was cussing beyond what I would have seen as a Lady in her time...
      I was NOT impressed.
      A Teacher/Coach/Instructor does NOT have to YELL or Cuss out their students to the point of shaming the student actor... or to yell to get their point across...
      Being passionate is understandable... Talking and expressing oneself is acceptable...
      In the 21st Century we now know more about the psychology of how it can hurt one's psyche and sometimes traumatized some students.
      Once when I was very young ... 5th grade... I was with a group of kids singing on stage... (I will NEVER forget this day as long as I live)...
      As I was (trying) to sing and not doing a very good job... (I had never been taught)... a young teacher yelled at me and said, "You can't carry a tune in a bucket... Go sit down, you are hurting my ears!!"
      I was mortified... and thought if I ever got the chance to ever become a Teacher I would Never YELL at them, shame them or embarrassed them...
      I never sang again...
      UNTIL a Great Teacher helped me... and I started singing in the 7th grade...
      Teachers, Parents anyone should THINK before they Talk...
      I don't care how good a Teacher thinks they are a Student/Child will NOT listen if they're yelled at, or embarrassed, or scared of the Teacher...
      Stella Adlar was a great Actress... but I would not want to be cussed or yelled at by her... for any reason.

      Depends how you define making it, I suppose. If you define making it as being world famous and a “star” then that’s definitely true. But there’s also a lot of actors or artists in general who just want to make something truthful and honest regardless of the commercial measurements of success. Someone may consider it more fulfilling to make something on a phone that speaks to a smaller group of people in a more profound way than to be at the helm of some blockbuster movie that has no depth or meaning beyond it’s ability to entertain (still a valid goal)
      When I watch this clip, It serves as a reminder that whatever we do in life, we can learn and grow if we stay open to it. He seems very self assured and cocky in this clip but it’s likely to mask insecurities and fear of being too vulnerable. What’s inspiring, then is looking at his ability now and seeing what an open and honest performer he can be because he continued to grow as an artist and began to understand artistic expression on a deeper and more profound level than he did in his youth.

    • @Scott.Burchell
      @Scott.Burchell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      She does generalise in the clip, although by saying "Those who can't do....teach!" are you not making a generalisation about acting teachers? Not only did she have a successful acting career in her youth, Stella Adler was a hugely influential figure who helped shape a lot of the great American actors. Marlon Brando even went on to live in her home while he was studying and although it wasn't her alone, she clearly played a huge part in his development as an actor. Robert Deniro also took certain aspects of her teachings on with him as a young actor, as he has said in recent interviews. I understand why you would be upset at her generalisation, but to dismiss her credibility on the grounds of one subjective comment seems a bit unfair.

    • @joseluisanaya5738
      @joseluisanaya5738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      what an ignorant response... very ignorant. Stella's main goal in life wasn't to be a recognized actor... it was to pass on Stanislavski's teachings on the next generation of actors who went on to become recognized. clearly you haven't been in a Stella Adler or a regular acting class... ever. don't talk about what you don't know. I have had teachers who're recognized stage directors and also renowned actors, as well as actors who don't care for fame or awards. and its not their goals. I've had teachers who've yelled at me and that's the way they teach, not because they're traumatizing you. They're confronting you so you can get it because they won't repeat it twice. And don't be such an ignorant: James Franco is one of those, who has an Academy Award nomination, 5 master's degrees and a respectful career as an actor (before scandals took him downhill) who has taught at NYU, Columbia, UCLA, USC, CalArts and others. There are those who can do and can teach. Don't generalize either. and do a little bit more of investigation: Stella had a SUCCESSFUL career as an actress in her youth years before becoming a LEGENDARY ACTING TRAINER and her alumni reflect her teachings in their work as Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Mark Ruffalo, Benicio del Toro, Salma Hayek, Sean Astin, Holland Taylor, Henry Winkler, etc., a long history. A lot of American theater and cinema has been shaped and been influenced by Stella's teachings.
      Plus, I'm an award-winning actor and filmmaker in my country and I'm an acting teacher in college. So get some respect for those who TEACH and learn some manners first, get educated in the first place.
