I decided to delve back into the genius of Phil after listening to the tribute on the Carvey/Spade podcast. He has got to be in the top 5 all-time SNL performers!! How no one broke down laughing in this sketch is the definition of self-control!
You are absolutely right. He is definitely at the top of that list. And he was there during overlap from two core groups that were absolutely a murderer's row of comedic talent.
Me too! I grew up in the 70/80s watching all these guys. Always loved Phil Hartman, I was just a teenager so didn't realize how amazing he was, now looking back, what an absolutely talented incredible person. He was gifted in so many facets of life. Also, people today revere him and never ever a negative word about the man, so so so tragic.
I studied under Bobby Coldsman for years until I got my big break when I landed the starring role in a Maytag commercial. I dedicated my performance to Bobby and he described my work as "regrettable."
I was going to write that comment using almost the same exact words. I don't like thinking of peoples' deaths from a selfish persepctive, but with Phil I can't help it. Just like with Norm, we were cheated of perhaps decades of more brilliance. And they were cheated of life itself.
I know it’s been said a thousand times, but I’ll say it a thousand more times WHAT A LOSS Phil Hartman was on his way to do movies , big things were up ahead for him, his talent was undeniable, huge talent in every respect , still miss him dearly, the joy incredible humor he put in my life, made me laugh like no one else, what a tragedy and for what ?????? RIP my dear Phil Hartman, adored you.
I've been an SNL fan since I was a little kid in the late 70s. I've watched every single season. Phil Hartman was the most versatile and brilliant cast member ever! Even the most horrible skits, he was able to make funny!
I’m 33 years old and been a fan since I was a kid too. I’m watching every season now. I’m on season 22. I definitely agree, Phil is the best cast member so far.
Some of these videos have so little views despite being uploaded 7 years ago because they were restricted in most countries for the longest time. Guess SNL learned where a lot of their audience come from
Harrison Ford spoke about this on Inside The Actors Studio. You only learn how to be good in class, to please the teacher. … the class scenes in Kominsky Method are spot on.
Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and Molly Shannon wrote the sketch, according to Will on Fly on the Wall podcast this week. It’s a tribute episode to Phil and reminded me of this sketch, so great!
Not really, he most likely got it from Second City theatre in Chicago. I dont think he came to NYC until he got hired on SNL. But trust me, theatre people are the same.
@@telluryeThe person talking about the Fly on the Wall podcast was correct. And unless I'm mistaken, Phil was from Groundlings, not Second City. Edit: perhaps the writers did get the idea from a Second City sketch. I won't debate you on that part, something I can't confirm.
This was great! Loved this. This is so true for acting classes. I took acting classes years ago at the Lee Strasberg school for acting in LA. Sometimes the teachers would act like this. To create that “deepness” inside of you. To then come out. Especially in Method Acting. I learned so much while there. Phil did a great job here as the acting teacher.
It's fascinating to get an inside look at the craft of acting and the process of character development and storytelling. It demystifies the artistry that looks so effortless in the great performances of the masters.
This was when Phil hosted the show, two seasons after he had left the show. It's amazing how he just slipped right back in like he'd never left, teaching those newbies how it's done.
Took an acting class in NYC back in mid eighties, this was basically how it went, Phil H was and still is a comedic masterpiece, no one tops him to this day. What a loss.
Phil Hartman's unreal talent is on full display in this sketch - a fairly obscure sketch in the SNL pantheon I might add. Lord knows what he would have done in all these years since his passing. What a senseless loss!! :-(
I love these acting class sketches! Reminds me of when I took classes. The name-dropping, manipulating your insecurities, the weird exercises - all so true!
@@voiceOfReason16 I never appreciated Phil Hartman much way back when, though he's absolutely perfect here. I especially love his partnering with Dana Carvey--McLaughlin and Buchanan, Carson and McMahon--there's a very real love there. It's so obvious when they work together.
@@jennifergersch9126 I remember getting tired of his schtick when he was on SNL. His last intro with Chris on their last night was hilarious and this sketch was one of his best imo. His murder shocked and saddened me. We were truly robbed of a brilliant comedic presence and anchor with his untimely death.
I can only imagine the wacky characters and fantastic voices Phil Hartman would be doing in movies and tv if he were still with us today! Such a brilliant and funny man!
Easily, Top 10 Sketches in the show's history.. Phil giving a masterclass, to not only us, but also the cast of home run hitters he was playing off of. How no one broke, given how spot on those classes can be, is perfection..It's the most Meta, SNL sketch lol
My god it's so crazy to see these, I remember this so well I loved it because he shouted and then brought it back.. what comedic genius..what SCARY ! genius.
Phil was the greatest of all time, he was the ultimate, and there will never be a greater comedic loss than losing him, I'll never forget that day. RIP PH

Who are the other 4? Don't answer.
Sad, those were great episodes
Top 1 for talent and range...best of the best of the best
"David Hasselhoff... Knight Rider, Baywatch, Baywatch Nights... the list goes on"
Yet it was the Pringles commercial that made him a star.
Does it, though?

Work with it.
Regrettable, but workmanlike.👍
This is our absolute favorite skit. We use “this is something, this is nothing” whenever we get our way or are confused. It works and is hilarious.
we meaning you and george clooney's favorite skit, i'm assuming
WE also agree and WE all find it to BOTH be mutualy good for BOTH of US

that's super cute
as someone with many years of theater/drama classes under her belt this is hilariously accurate.
You should watch the Kominsky Method. it’s about an acting teacher and I’m sure you will relate
Wait…I’ve never done anything like theatre/drama classes. Is it accurate-ish?
@michaelcameron5531 As someone without any formal acting experience or training whatsoever, I can tell you that this is an eerily accurate depiction.
Totally agree!! On point and hilarious
Yes! The incomprehensible directions! Confusing criticism! Gobbledygook! It’s all there!
Phil..Still mourning this loss so many years later. I miss his genius.
Phenomenal natural talent. He had the voice for it, and he could get in character very easily
Good lord. The pain of losing the genius of Phil will never go away. The amount of talent we lost is stunning.
100% with you on that!

This was one of Phil's greatest skits. He probably wrote it all. He knew about the NYC "theater" people.

"Quick note: I don't like women, they shouldn't be in the business. Now go." Perfect characterization. And no cue card reading. RIP Phil. 💔
That's the line...

t would never fly today. Sadly.
OMG as someone who studied acting, Phil Hartman's impression of an acting teacher is so spot on it's cringeworthy!
What showed the world my range as an actor? The Pringles commercial.

Chris Kattan wrote a great sketch and cast it perfectly. Phil Hartman was amazing.
If it wasn't for Hartman rarely glancing at the cue cards, I feel this was a completely improvised performance.

Yes. Much of the SNL material from that '90's era doesn't age well. This skit is still good, in my little opinion.
Two words “Pilot Season!”

Bobby Coldsman has a reputation for using them up, rejecting them, rehab them, and make them a star.
Eg. Robert Downey Jr.
Well, he did direct David Hasselhoff, after all. “Which only proves my point…”

Bryan Cranston reminds me of Phil Hartman. I was too young but always liked watching old sketches from Phil n movies he was in.
