Storytime: I have been working overseas off and on the past decade. I met a elderly African-American woman ex-pat, in her late 60s, last year, living in Istanbul, Turkey. Intellectually, she was brilliant, fluent in Russian, French, Turkish and Kurdish! She spent her 30s, 40s, and 50s traveling the world working in development and education, and having plenty of "romantic" international lovers over the decades. Unable to settle down, incapable of submitting to any man- Russian, Turk, African or Arab. But the past couple of years have been tough. Work overseas is drying up for women her age. She lost her last teaching job and translation job during the pandemic. She also broke her leg and was dependent on friends (like me) and neighbors to get errands done. Her health is getting worse with age and she is living in a crappy apartment in a bad neighborhood in Istanbul. In her prime (30s, 40s) she had PLENTY of chances to settle down with a man, but she's too feisty, stubborn, combative, and no matter how "brilliant" you might be intellectually, no man wants to put up with that from a woman. My opinion that I didn’t get to share since my pets became the conversation: I can’t speak for all women, but I do believe there are still many women like myself who want to be loved and respected, coming from a place of love. Feeling like you have power over someone, operating in your masculine energy and being controversial does NOT gain you any respect. People who respect you out of fear don’t really respect you at all. I understand feminism, I own my own dance/fitness studio and was raised to make school and independence a priority. But I was also raised to be humble and respectful, being told that you have to give respect (submission) to get it. My mom is the breadwinner, very independent and could’ve said and done many things to make my dad “fear” her, but she instead chose to respect him and not make him feel like a lesser man. They’ve been married 39 years. Ladies, men do not fear us and doing ratchet sh** and being loud/controversial is definitely not going to make them respect us, but love will.
