That’s edgy and all but it’s true
Cerberus Well... Not really since actual monsters exist, but you’re not technically becoming a monster (meaning you aren’t infected. Which is what allows you to be a hunter. And what you’re killing... Yeah, no, there isn’t any reason to feel sorry for them really -_- Hell, why do I feel like the last interesting boss in this regard was in DS1 ? Maybe DS3 with Abyss watchers, but even then there is really not enough either build up or obvious heart wrenching clues. Maybe Dancer ? You have to read the item description though, so it’s not as impactful as it could be) so there isn’t really a point in saying that.
Cerberus I get that, that’s why I said that the monsters you kill have no reason to be pitied (meaning that it’s sad good people were transformed into monster, but killing them isn’t anything to lose sleep over, since at this point they are but mindless beasts).

How the hell can you be described as a metaphorical monster ? If anything, given how rude Yarnham’s inhabitants are, the fact that you even take the time to get rid of monsters to save their asses makes you a freakin saint.
They try to make it more morally ambiguous with people like Gascogne or the dude atop the tower that protects the monsters, but given the fact that he is basically as full of sh*t as Priscilla, and that monsters are indeed just monsters, even when compared to the (sane) locals, why should you be described as a monster for killing these beasts ? Because they used to be people ? Okay but the problem here is the key word « used to ». They were people, they aren’t anymore, not killing them won’t bring any good, and killing them will at least protect innocent of insufferable people.
Compare that to killing Maiden Astrea, or encountering one of the siren octopus head things in Seath’s castle, or killing Oscar, or having Siegfried die on you, or killing Sif, or killing Queelag once you can speak to her sister, or in DS3, compare that to killing the abyss watchers, which you can see are still trying to uphold their duty even when corrupted by the abyss and brought back by the first flame, or having to... Kill a certain someone in order to bring about the age of man, or even killing Dancer of the boreal valley, even though you have to wait and read the description of her items, or remember everything you read about Sullyvan’s knights and what he did to them.
Basically, you are much more of a monster in DeS, DS1 and DS3... And maybe DS2 I’d have to replay or reread the lore but I can’t remember anything comparable right now, than you are in bloodborn, because of the broken story.

Even if this was true, I’m pretty sure most of those people would agree that actually looking a Nazi in the eye and killing him wouldn’t be simple.
But what you say is irrelevant because we have other games in a similar series, the soul series, to compare that assumption to.
In the souls series, there are plenty of bosses and NPC that will take a toll on people by their mere existence.
Even now, just say « maiden astrea » in a soul comment section and you’ll find players to tell you how sad it was to kill her, and if you manage to talk to Queelag’s sister, I’m pretty sure that you’ll feel pretty uneasy, the same goes for killing the aforementioned NPC in DS3.
These monsters give you no reason to pity them. They don’t talk, they attack you relentlessly, they don’t seem to suffer, the music doesn’t give you any cue, etc.
Overall, apart maybe from Gascogne if you talked to his daughter, you have no reason to think of yourself as a monster, and I say that IN COMPARISON to other souls games, so I don’t care about your hypothetical situation, I’m talking about the end result in the game we were given.
Hell, I don’t even know if there is a mob that flees you (except one boss that you will find really morally easy to kill seeing how he taunt you and hit pretty hard).

Just to be clear, again, we have reference, so we can know, empirically, that it’s not particularly difficult morally speaking to kill these monsters from the perspective of the player when compared to the souls games where there are multiple bosses and NPCs that are memorable precisely because they are extremely hard to kill without feeling uneasy, sad, or down right guilty, either during or after the fight.
Also, yes, it would be really easy to kill them, because they don’t look anything human anymore. They have barely any trace of humanity left, they attack me, and I don’t know personally any of them, so killing them wouldn’t make me uneasy, except maybe the gore, but that’s not moral uneasiness, that’s just gut level revulsion.

Key word « monsters ». They aren’t people anymore, your brain doesn’t have any reason to emulate them. The reason why we emulate others, including their bad behaviors, is because consciously or not we are trying to fit in, or at least we’re trying to navigate a certain social environment and in order to do so we adopt their codes.
These monsters will attack me on sight, I can’t talk to them, the only thing that won’t attack me are other non infected humans, hence these are the ones I’d (if I or a man average human, was thrown into BB) try to emulate, if I tried to emulate anyone.
To say it otherwise : a wolf child will emulate his pack’s behavior. But a lone hermit that is constantly attacked by wolves won’t start howling at the moon.
Well, not unless he actually goes insane, but that’s not what you’re talking abou, and this doesn’t appear to be your character’s case, because they messed up the story.

And I totally agree on you with that, the problem so that this never happens in the case. At no point do you lose your sanity.
Besides, that’s not what we were talking about, you’re completely off topic.
We were talking about the mental toll THE PLAYER receives because of the moral burden of killing monsters. THE PLAYER, not the character.
The fact that neither do makes it worse, but even if your character somehow did (which is never indicated, even though I agree it would make sense), you (or at least most players) won’t feel bad for killing monsters because there is nothing for the average human to hang on to in order to feel sad or guilty when killing BB’s monsters or bosses, and we know that it doesn’t have to be this way since in other very similar games, there are mobs and Bosses that are mentally taxing to kill because of who or what they are, their story, the arena, what they say or do during the fight, and the music.

Eh, yeah, except we weren’t discussing the horror element.
I agree that it would be mentally taxing from the perspective of the fact that these monsters are really scary, so maybe in some sense you become a monster because your psyche is eroded by the monstrosity of what you encounter.
But there are two problems to that :
1) it doesn’t happen to the player, generally speaking (by which I don’t mean that players are never scared, I just mean that nobody has gone mad because of having to encounter BB’ creatures)
2) it doesn’t happen to the character.
The character doesn’t appear to give a flying heck about his situation, which is a big problem in a horror game of this type, especially in lovecraftian type of story.
It would be fine if at least the player was given reason to, if not go mad, at least feel conflicted and bad and revulsed by his actions and his discoveries... But mostly the player doesn’t have any reason to.
Not to say that it can’t happen, but again, in terms of existential horror... BB is pretty bad. Your actions aren’t morally horrifying, the monsters you encounter aren’t morally horrifying, and the gods that tower over Yarnham... Don’t have any reasons to scare you. They can’t affect you as a player, or your character, except by killing you which is... I mean it’s a soulsborn game, it’s not anything special for something to have the ability to kill you -_-
Think back on what you actually do, read the story of DeS or DS, in terms of existential horror they are much better.
(NB : I have to say hat BB’s setting is good existential horror : a town that went to hell because of the expérimentations of mad scholars on the blood of dormant gods found deep within the earth ? That’s great. The problem I have with it is that this isn’t the story, that’s the backstory. Your story isn’t nearly as interesting or terrifying since you have no stake in this world, you know barely anyone, Yarnham is nothing to you, and the gods in question aren’t any different from your point of view than any other monster, etc)

The original question was « what makes you a monster at the end of BB figuratively » ?
I agree that a real person would miss a few screw if he had to go through what your character do, though I’m not sure if he would qualify as a monster still.
But this doesn’t answer the question.
Because you aren’t someone who actually went through this, so you have none of the experiences that would make you miss a few screw.
And your character has no apparent sequel, and the story wouldn’t make your character morally ambiguous either.
This is why I compared to DeS, or DS1 or 3, because some the actions you take in these games *are* morally ambiguous, wether by intent or because the story is too vague for you to be sure you made the morally right choice.
In comparison, in BB, you have no reason to feel guilty or sad about what you did, and your character didn’t do anything that would make him morally ambiguous or evil if you didn’t decide to kill an NPC for no reason.
I may be wrong, but if I am, can you cite me an action of yours (except maybe father Gascogne) that you had good reason to feel sad or guilty about, and/or that would warrant your character being morally ambiguous or downright evil ?

I love the line "elightenment can drive you mad", because it's so true! The more insight you have, the harder things can become, some enemies gain new attacks and some even change shape!
There are actually some hidden things revealed at a certain amount of insight. For example, at 30 insight (I think) winter lanterns (those brains that give you frenzy) will actually sing a tune that's a bit off.
At around 70 insight(Might be a little off), the Lesser Amygdala that hang around Cathedral Ward become visible even if the Blood Moon has not yet risen.

What I love about this song is that it captures the hunt more than the game. It focuses on actually being a hunter, a damn near unlikable machine of death and destruction. A being powered by a Great one. It is about the thrill of the hunt and the adrenaline rush inducing fights. Other songs focus more on the sadness, the horror and the over all atmosphere but this? Nah dude. Its about being the single baddest badass in the Bloodborne universe "I didnt come to drop, bars I'll be setting them high! There aint no other hunter better than i!" The first two lines show it.
It does!! But also some undertones of sadness like the fact that you are bound to become one of the monsters eventually but you may as well take lots of em down with you
And then you see my gameplay, the sadness comes back man
I describe songs like this as the "power trip genre". They're less about the game itself and more about being badass and unstoppable. Another good example is his Doom songs

This song is keeping me from ragequitting on the first gauntlet of mobs in Bloodborne. Been playing this game for a week and I have only gotten close to killing the cleric beast (I known it's optional, but I'm still trying.) I restart this song every time I die and it fills me with BEASTY DETERMINATION. Only other soulsbourne game I've played was DS1 (and beat it), and at the time, their song Undead Lullaby kept me from ragequitting in the middle of Blighttown. Thank you for this morale boost
Never give up, bloodborne is a great game at making you learn with every death,chose a weapon that you feel comfortable with and most importantly have fun when i first played the cleric beast was a challenge but once you learn its moves its not that hard believe me anyways happy hunting!

This game alone turned me from a casual gamer to hardcore gamer. I bought the game not knowing a single thing about dark souls or the difficulty. I just bought it because it looked awesome lol. I played through central yahrnum where the mob is in the streets and got my ass handed to me. Not only that, but the enemies seemed to get stronger each time I died. Haven beaten the game twice now I know that they weren't getting stronger, rather I just didn't know that weapons had to be repaired lol. Anyways, after trying to get past the first level for 9 hours I quit the game, said it was impossible and then didn't touch it again for 6 MONTHS!!! Then I randomly ran across a video on youtube where the guy said he almost quit his game of the year (that being Bloodborne of course) and that once it all clicks it's entirely worth keeping at it. I was intrigued, so I said fuck it and gave it another go. I of course struggled with it again for many hours, but then suddenly I started actually learning the controls and getting good. I kicked the tow folks ass and then finally beat the first boss and I can't even tell you how amazing it felt to finally beat the Cleric Beast. I knew from that point on that I was hooked ADDICTED to that feeling. I wanted more and I wouldn't stop until I beat the game. And thank god I gave it another try because I would have quit and completely missed out on my favorite game of all time. Bloodborne is a bloody MASTERPIECE! (pun intended). It's just not a game you can treat like a mindless hack and slash like Devil May Cry and many others. Not to bash games like that because they definitely have their place, but games like Bloodborne require you to actually think strategically and force you to learn. It's a game where you try to learn something from each death so that you get a little better each time, until master it. This is one of those games where I actually felt bad that I didn't buy it at full price. Because it definitely is well worth the price. I'd say it's even worth buying a PS4 for, which many people already have. Anyways, what I mean to say is don't listen to the discouraging comments. I want to encourage you to get this game and just keep at it. If you still haven't found enjoyment after slaying the Cleric Beast then this game truly isn't for you. But if you did find enjoyment, then you will be in for one hell of an unforgettable ride. Because of this game I became a die hard From Software fan and immediately went out and got all 3 dark souls games. I will most definitely be getting Sekiro once it releases.
P.S. this rap is fucking awesome. Once you beat the game you'll get an entirely new perspective on the lyrics.
Wow just found this song and immediately loved it I already was a die hard fromsoft fan but this song made it better I could never get into it just becuase I just got done playing ds3 so wasn't expecting a challenge but now I onow it's super hard and after playing ds1 and elden ring I want to play it again and I might just do that hope the 3 years have been good for you and I also hope the rest of this year goes well (ha) as well

This resumed the final of the game so well I don’t even have words, I first listen to this song before playing the game and get to know the story behind it, but when I actually get knowledge of this I listen to it one more time and damn… this rap is so fking good!!!!!!
I guess "the world of man" is the world at the beginning of the game and transcending it means getting more insight and being more in tune with the horrific cosmic truth of Yharnam
