A few (more) minutes of fun - with a mixed media butterfly quartet

- In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
Today I'm creating some dimensional collaging over last week's crackle backgrounds. Join me for a mixed media collage journey that gave me several surprises along the way, and ended up with one of my favourite art series sets ever. I can't tell you how much I love the final butterfly quartet... I hope you do too.
See last week's backgrounds come to life here: • A few minutes of fun -...
Tim Holtz Distress Crayon in Phantom Mist; Idea-ology Trimmings - lace; Idea-ology Clippings word stickers; Distress Ink - Walnut Stain
Metal buttons from my stash
Butterfly acetate stickers - found online
(For details of the products used for the backgrounds, see the previous episode, linked above.)
I bought everything used in this video myself.

Thank you so much for that wonderful comment, Erica - I read it with a big smile on my face. And yes, I've learned that the hard way with twigs!

What wonderful videos! So very glad I've found them because you are so inspiring to a beginner who is just feeling her way and learning to trust that feeling of "this is it!" ❤❤❤
Oh, that's such a good feeling - and yes, trust it! I'm delighted you're finding inspiration here... I've only been adding videos regularly to TH-cam for a couple of months so there's plenty more to come. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.

These are scrumptious ❤. I definitely need to add more twigs to my work. Your color pallette is so soothing and uplifting. Thank you for sharing a few minutes of fun!
Twigs are great... and they're free! So happy you enjoyed the fun - thank you for taking the time to let me know.
Stunning masterpieces! So much LOVE to see your creating process and hear you talk to them! ❤
So happy you love them and yes, it's a bit disconcerting that my internal monologue now just seems to happen out loud with less and less censorship from me!! Ah well, I'm happy others seem to find it interesting/helpful/hilarious (delete as appropriate!). Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Hello Alison! YAY on seeing more FUN finishing these amazing butterfly cards! It’s such an interesting process to watch as there are times when I really agree with the direction you’re going and yet there are other times when I’m being an armchair quarterback so to speak and second guessing your decisions… I would not have thought to use actual twigs to put the butterflies on and now I almost can’t imagine not using them! I love the element of lace and the filigree button style accents are just lovely. Thanks for sharing your creativity and inspiration! Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
PS: thanks for the detailed answer about ‘rust’ that was both interesting and informative. Although I’m excited about the card tin project, I think today’s play for me will probably be doing various background techniques as I received my amazon order for 1,000 heavy weight #8 tags! =)
Thanks so much for that... and I'm pleased to hear there are times you'd have gone in a different direction. Wouldn't life be dull if we were all the same!? I do love incorporating natural elements like twigs, but they don't always want to cooperate.
Hope you have lots of fun playing with your 1000 tags... I really hope, having got that many, that they are good ones!!! Have a great weekend.
@@w0rdsandp1cturesHi Alison… I had my play today and really enjoyed it. The tags are 13 pt Manila and worked perfectly especially since I still have a tendency to overwork sprays & inks with too much water. I went for the large quantity because I could get 1000 for $50 yet would have had to pay $20 for just 100… I wanted enough tags to not have to worry about ‘wasting’ them when my experiments and practice efforts go awry. =)
I’ve been doing mostly collage for the past 2 or 3 years other than a quantity of greeting cards for various reasons so I’ve been missing playing with paint and sprays, etc. Your videos have inspired me to play again and to enjoy the process so I sincerely thank you for that. My plan for those cards in the tin are to use my Fresco Finish Paints for the backgrounds, etc. I just love those paints and I’ve missed them! LOL Take Care and have an awesome day! 🙂
@@suebouch4074 All sounds like a perfect way to play! I'm so happy that these videos have tempted you back into some mixed media fun and experimentation. And yes, I totally get that on the bulk quantity... no stress about wastage that way. (And the same way I get lured into buying spring bulbs - why buy 25 for €20 when you can have 100 for €30?!) Happy Sunday!
Loved it all, a big THANK YOU for sharing! 💚💙
You're very welcome! Happy you enjoyed it - thank you for taking the time to let me know.
So beautiful 😍 thank you
So happy you like them - thanks for taking the time to let me know.
Same !! Twigs beat lace hands down in my world as well !! 🤍🤍🤍
Yup!
Beautiful color combo 😍
Thank you - I usually take nature as my inspiration, and she never gets it wrong!
The small scraps can be hung on bulb pins on dongles for your journal .glue several together at the bottom of a tiny tag.
Thank you... good idea. I know there are endless uses for scraps, but there's a limit to my storage space!!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
Thanks so much .. ❤ I'm going out to buy crackle paint today and looking forward to following your video .
Excellent - I don't think you'll regret it... it's lovely stuff. Just remember to be patient and let it dry!
These are amazing 😊😊
Thanks so much - happy you like them.

That's great - welcome! I've only been sharing regularly here on TH-cam for a few months, so there's plenty more to come. Thanks so much for watching, subscribing and taking the time to comment.
I love this and am getting all manner of ideas from those twigs. I just received my order of your quotes stamps yesterday (Happiness and the Magic & Wonder sets) and can’t wait to play around with those in conjunction with the Perspective Moth die that you inspired me to buy.
My husband, upon seeing me using said new Perspective Moth die was all a flutter (yes, that bad pun was intended), and blurted out “wait, what? ….YOU didn’t BUY that! I can’t believe….but you HATE moths!!” Oh no, not I. Not anymore. I love moths! 😂 I even liked the butterflies in this project. I am finally getting right with the Lepidoptera suborder. 😂 🤓Your surname is totally apropos because you are the bomb Alison!
That's so funny about the moths... welcome to the world of lepidoptera! That's lovely to hear that the quotes have arrived - I hope you will have a great time playing with them (and some twigs). Thanks so much for another lovely comment.
Lovely!
Thank you!

@@specialhandsartists Thank you!
Thanks so much for inviting us in for another session if pure fun. So satisfying to watch you place things where my mind’s eye tells you to. As a side note…what are you using as a craft mat to squirt your paints on?
Happy you enjoyed it - thanks so much for taking the time to comment to let me know. The craft mat I'm using here is a Premium Craft Mat by Wow Embossing Powders in the UK... but any silicone craft mat will do the job. You can also use those teflon baking sheets which are available most places www.amazon.co.uk/Tabanzhe-Pieces-Reusable-Baking-Mats/dp/B0CQMLJKS7 I usually put one of those in my travelling craft stash if I'm on the move. Hope that helps.
Yes, that helps tremendously! Thanks😊
Gorgeous! Love the backgrounds and the added details after. Do the twigs and butterflies make the tags to fragile to put in a journal?
The butterflies would be fine - they're on acetate backing, since I didn't remove the stickers, and fairly sturdy. You'd have to glue the twigs in flatter positions to avoid the risk of them snapping in a journal, which would be possible (unless you're okay with snapped twigs, of course). Or use them in a journal like the one I was flipping through in Books, Books, Books the other week... which is so full that it doesn't really close any more!
Just found your channel and love your creativity. Thanks so much for sharing. The sets go together so well- how do you store/display them? Do they eventually go in a journal?
Happy to hear you are enjoying the channel - I've only been adding videos regularly for a few months, so there's plenty more to come. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
For your question, yes, you could certainly use them in a journal (though you'd probably have to leave off the twigs in that case - they'd get crushed). You could frame them as a quartet or in four individual frames. You can use them as card toppers. For the most part, it's the process that interests me, not the final display, so usually I keep mine in little crates or boxes around the studio, to flick through in the future for inspiration or just for pleasure. If you take a look at some of the Shorts on my channel, you'll see some of what I mean in the tag crate videos - here's a quick example: th-cam.com/users/shortsC2b0fhr2EGQ
I am a new subscriber and I will definably be back and will be looking at other videos that you made!! I so very much enjoyed this video and listening to the why of things!! One question though, Why did you use the buttons? I was confused to the need. Please keep making the magic for you are very artistic and the world needs you!!
Happy you decided to subscribe - welcome. I don't think the creative impulse is very good at answering "why" questions... it wasn't so much a need as a want. I think I wanted a circular element - a regular geometric shape to contrast with the natural organic shapes and components - and I love different materials, so metal is always tempting to me (usually rusted, but not always!). Is that enough of a "why"?!
If you like to keep it simple (deduced from your name!) then no, you absolutely wouldn't need them. But I did.
Thanks so much for watching, subscribing and taking the time to comment.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures Thank you!! " I wanted a circular element" answered the "why" and now I understand and see it!!
I don't like to keep it simple so I need to write it everywhere to remind me to keep it simple,, giggles
And, keep it simple susan is the KISS method which I like!!
And I ask me if we would ever see the face behind the lovely voice 😊😉🤗
😆😆The face has been out for various things... My live stamp launches and Friday Fun sessions on the PaperArtsy People Group over on FB (a place I prefer not to hang out, but there are work commitments that have to happen there), as well as for the Fodder Challenge and Fodder School classes I am teaching. You can catch some of those PaperArtsy videos here if you join the PaperArtsy People Group (or maybe even if you don't? - don't know): facebook.com/groups/paperartsypeople/learning_content/?filter=3918108605082203

New subscriber here!
Great - welcome on board! I've only been adding videos regularly here for a few months, so there's plenty more to come. Thanks so much for watching, commenting and subscribing.
Really beautiful. What do you do with them?
Happy you like them - and thank you for taking the time to comment. I'm interested in process rather than results so I'm afraid the simple answer to your question is that I make them... and it's that creative process that is the bit that matters to me.
They could become card toppers, or go in a journal as a focal point on a page (as long as I don't mind the twigs getting crumpled), or be framed either individually or as a quartet. For the most part, I tend to keep things in little crates or boxes around the studio for flipping through for inspiration or for pleasure. (If you take a look at some of my Shorts, you'll find the tag crates there.)
But as I say, it's the making that matters as far as I'm concerned - being in that state of creative flow, playing, experimenting, learning.
That's awesome. I do the same.
Where are the Shorts? I made a couple of these and I'm so happy with the way they turned out. Thank you for the inspiration!
