      haha don't worry about it i know every cinema youtube channel under the sun, but this is the only one that beautifully combines quantity and quality EFAP is great and tony is very articulate and all that but clint just oozes cool.
      PS: check out Lessons From The Screenplay if you don't already know it

      For me the ranking goes (if I had to rank these great efforts at visual literacy):
      1. EFAP
      2. Nerdwriter's Understanding Art playlist
      3. Cinefix Top 10s
      4. Channel Criswell
      5. Lessons from the Screenplay
      I love them all. For anyone looking for outstanding reading material on film commentary, check out websites like Cinephilia and Beyond, davidbordwell dot net and the writings of Fim Crit Hulk and David Ehrlich (my two favorite film critics). I also love The Dissolve, but that shut down in 2015. The old reviews are still up in the website.

    I love how you don't shy away from showing clips of summer blockbuster movies in this artful subject. It's become such a cliche for film enthusiasts to simply dismiss all popular entertainment as 0% art. The majority of the latter may not come anywhere close to such lists, but at least you qualify them as examples.

    I know you guys already work stupidly hard to make these videos, but damn son, the two-shot needs its own video, if not series..
    So many films are practically made for the the two-shot - the hero finally confronting the villain, two lovers (in any state of their relationship), a conversation between friends, the rich man and the poor man, parent and child, two strangers, dying in someone's arms, "my martial arts are better than your martial arts", etc, etc, etc.
    If film is an attempt to communicate the human experience, there's nothing more human than our relationships to the people and the world around us. #deep

    Cant wait for some more upcoming shots - some ideas/inspirations:
    - The OVERCRANKED shot (Wes Anderson films)
    - The CONTINUOUS shot (Russian Ark)
    - The FRAME WITHIN A FRAME (PT Anderson films)
    - The LOW ANGLE (KNEE) shot (Taratino films)
    - The ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE shot (Kubrick films)
    Great series so far.

    The shot in "Shallow Hal" when Hal can now see reality again. And he realizes that the little girl he's been speaking to earlier in the film is in the burn unit. Then she comes out and greets him. We don't see what she actually looks like. But Hal now can. And we know he can. The expression on his face as he tries not to react to what she actually looks like, and pretends nothing is wrong; is both heart-breaking and disturbing at the same time.

    A shot I think is super underrated, because of the general hate for The Village, is the shot where Ivy's hand is in the foreground and the creature is coming up on her hand in the background. There's a little pillar of shadow that the creature passes under before being re-illuminated in light, which gives the illusion that it's moving much faster than it actually is, which makes it look very close to Ivy, and feels very tense whether you know the twist at the end or not.

      Austin's Obsession Productions...The Village isn't bad whatsoever. There are issues in the script but Cinematography and Direction wise its amazing..

    • @austinsop7434
      @austinsop7434 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree, I don't think it's bad at all. It's actually one of my favorite movies of his lol. People call it a mess, or a train wreck, but I thought The Village was very underrated and got a lot of unwarranted hate. Unbreakable's still my favorite though :)

    • @duvan.deschain
      @duvan.deschain 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I believe the hate was born out of the awful marketing it received. To me the only big issue with the film was Ivy's father giving away the twist a little too soon, and that might have been the only big editing issue with that film because it is shot beautifuly. The shot you picked... Hell Yeah!!!

    My favorite two shot is in The Godfather when Michael and Vito are speaking in the garden. They are arranged so it looks like they are seeing eye to eye, when in reality they are looking past each other, signifying the difference between the two men and their use of power. Although they are speaking to each other and agreeing with each other in their dialogue, the shot itself shows that they are on different planes. Love it.

    As a film student myself I have to say I am impressed. Not only do you guys manage to summarise the main theoretical knowledge, giving an example and showing how it works is a hands on approach, I have always been looking for. As much as it pains me to say it, with a channel like this, you don't need to waste four years studying film. Because anything that awakens your interest and you want to deepen your knowledge in, you can find literature and work it out and through by yourself. By the way there is a book called "Film als Kunst" by Rudolf Arnheim which I want to recommend to you very warmly, Thank you for this channel! I have a learned a tremendous amount in so little time! You guys donÄt only know your shit, you also manage to present it in a comprehensible way. And as much as I love the classics, it is so refreshing to find examples which are not only from old masters like Yasujiro Ozu (whom I love) or Fritz Lang (whom I love as well). Keep it up!

    "The Fall" could've at least get an honorable mention at no. 3 because of the numerous scenes of Catinca & Lee Pace having face to face conversations with both of them in the frame. One that strikes out for me is "Are you trying to save my soul?" convo between Roy & Alexandria, that's the key point for both the characters & the overall plot of the film.
    That being said, happy to see a "The Fall" glimps on no. 5 Pre-mentions. Thank you for that! You always make incredible lists of movies & I've learnt so much from them. Thank you so much making such amazing videos, it's always a pleasure to watch & learn from it. X

    I have nothing but respect for you guys but I beg you to include the overhead shot [parking lot blanketed in snow with the dark planters contrasting as Jerry slowly and sullenly makes his defeated walk to his car] from Fargo where Jerry has just had his idea stolen from his father in law. Its cold and isolated, magical and yet defeated. It is the crux of all the action to come. Its the reality of Jerry feeling he needs to literally kidnap his own wife and essentially creating the film. And visually it is absolutely beautiful; stunning really. Thanks for listening and also, once more you guys are really amazing! perhaps my favorite channel. Keep up the great work.

    Agreed, one of the best channels on TH-cam by far. While I don't always side with their top picks, I am continually impressed by the extremely thorough and thought provoking analysis. Way better than a film class. Now I need to go back and reexamine every single movie I've ever loved from multiple new perspectives.

    One of my favorite crowd shots comes from the tennis scene in "Strangers on a Train". Everyone in the crowd swivels back and forth as they follow the ball while Bruno is completely locked in on Guy Haines. It's similar to the shot in the shot in this video from Oceans 11, but a lot creepier. I love it! Definitely one of my favorites!

    I'm so happy that your mentioned Metropolis in this list! One thing I want to bring attention to that I think got left out is how Lang portrays these large groups in terms of shapes. The shot that you mentioned has all of the workers in a rectangle, suggesting their aimlessness and inability to think for themselves. They are orderly as a result of the oppressive above-ground society that dictates how they live. That shot is beautifully contrasted by a particular shot at the end, when the working class charge up the cathedral steps. They are not square-shaped, but rather shaped like a triangle, or an arrowhead. They are now focused and oriented, refusing to stand down from their demands for respect and equality (though whether or not they actually achieve their goal is questionable).
    I love this channel, by the way. As someone who studies film history, I love channels that ache over minute scenes and subtle movements. Keep up the great work!

    These are actually really informative and inspirational to anyone who is a visual artist. Paintings, dancing, photography, comics. You have to see the whole picture yes, but you have to acknowledge that the details are important and should all lend themselves to whatever the one point of the piece is, what its supposed to evoke or translate. The great thing about visuals that get to involve movement, or before and after bits like comics, is that if there isnt a way display the entire story in one photo or shot, you have a shot before or after that can at least add to it. (Like that Kubrick scene where the step son has the reluctant walk before hand that visually translates that hes not a servant in the next shot.

    The analysis on the TWO SHOT from PTA's The Master was just...holy...incredible. After seeing this shot, I paused the video and tried to extrapolate the manners in which you guys would analyze it; but damn, that imbalance, framing, horizontal lines, and height breakdowns just demonstrate how the seeming minutiae enhances every frame.
