Courtesy of Jimmy Akin (ex Protestant turned Catholic) ‘Practical Problems of Sola Scriptura’
Simply stated, the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura (“Scripture alone”) teaches that every teaching in Christian theology (everything pertaining to “faith and practice”) must be able to be derived from Scripture alone. This is expressed by the Reformation slogan Quod non est biblicum, non est theologicum (“What is not biblical is not theological,” cf. Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms: Drawn Principally from Protestant Scholastic Theology, Richard A. Muller, Baker, 1985).
An essential part of this doctrine, as it has been historically articulated by Protestants, is that theology must be done without allowing Tradition or a Magisterium (teaching authority) any binding authority. If Tradition or a Magisterium could bind the conscience of the believer as to what he was to believe then the believer would not be looking to Scripture alone as his authority.
A necessarily corollary of the doctrine of sola scriptura is, therefore, the idea of an absolute right of private judgment in the interpretation of the Scriptures. Each individual has the final prerogative to decide for himself what the correct interpretation of a given passage of Scripture means, irrespective of what anyone-or everyone-else says.
If anyone or even everyone else together could tell the believer what to believe, Scripture would not be his sole authority; something else would have binding authority. Thus, according to sola scriptura, any role Tradition, a Magisterium, Bible commentaries, or anything else may play in theology is simply to suggest interpretations and evidence to the believer as he makes his decision.
Each individual Christian is thus put in the position of being his own theologian.
Of course, we all know that the average Christian does not exercise this role in any consistent way, even the average person admitted by Fundamentalists to be a genuine, “born again” believer.
There are simply too many godly grannies who are very devout in their faith in Jesus, but who are in no way inclined to become theologians.
Not only is the average Christian totally disinclined to fulfill the role of theologian, but if they try to do so, and if they arrive at conclusions different than those of the church they belong to-an easy task considering the number of different theological issues-then they will quickly discover that their right to private judgment amounts to a right to shut up or leave the congregation.
Protestant pastors have long realized (in fact, Luther and Calvin realized it) that, although they must preach the doctrine of private judgment to ensure their own right to preach, 👉they must prohibit the exercise of this right in practice for others👈, lest the group be torn apart by strife and finally break up.
It is the failure of the prohibition of the right of private judgment that has resulted in the over 20,000+ Christian Protestant denominations listed in the Oxford University Press’s World Christian Encyclopedia.
The disintegration of Protestantism into so many competing factions, teaching different doctrines on key theological issues (What kind of faith saves? Is baptism necessary? Needed? Is baptism for infants? Must baptism be by immersion only? Can one lose salvation? How? Can it be gotten back? How? Is the Real Presence true? Are spiritual gifts like tongues and healing for today? For everyone? What about predestination? What about free will? What about church government?) is itself an important indicator of the practical failure of the doctrine of private judgment, and thus the doctrine of sola scriptura.

Want Apologia to discuss canonicity and self-authenticity under the principle of Sola Scriptura? Like this comment!
Dr. Phillip Kayser addresses this premise effectively in his book on canon. However, one type of question arises: How do we establish the canonicity of 1, 2, and 3 John? Dr. Kayser seems to focus on Pauline & Petrine scriptures and Revelation. Can anyone provide insight on this? I must be missing something!
Edit: the validity of sola scriptura in regard to consistency really rests on the self-authenticity of the canon we accept as Protestants!

I have only sent her 2 things but she gets irrationally triggered by things especially when she perceives her boundaries are being crossed. But again, my faith is an essential part of me now. That said I would love to see Jeff or Dr. James White debate with real Catholic theologians such as Dr. Scott Hahn or Father David Pivonka - - my guess is they won't but man it would sure be great to see in a true spirit of love for Christ and as such, a love of Truth!@Reformed1646

I agree with Jeff when he says the Church received the word of God and that it was God that preserved it and led the Church to recognize the books that belong to it. But I wouldn’t say that it created the Church. God created the Church at Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit. And then that Church was led to write, preserve and canonize what became the New Testament. Maybe he meant something else by it, but just thought I’d add the clarification.

I have a question have any of you struggled with lust or perverted thoughts or adult content I struggle with controlling those thoughts it's even harder because I'm autistic which has a connection to hypersexuality or perverted thoughts that they can't control there's been many studies proving this
I mainly get tempted at night time when I go to sleep. And when I wake up I have an urge to look it up for some reason but my brain is still not awake but I don't have a reason and I'm not thinking clearly on why I'm doing it it's just pure impulse
Getting those thoughts in temptations in my head it's something I struggled with for a long time especially last night
( this hasn't been going on for really really long time for me and is just a hindrance in my walk with God and maybe the reason he doesn't talk to me or answer my prayers)
It's something I've been struggling with recently the past couple months but lust in private thoughts I've been dealing with for years I don't want it in my life I don't to be away from God because of that sin and I don't want it to stop God from working in my life blessing me and stopping me from living a holy life
And being a good husband because I want a good Godly wife( I'm still a virgin and I've never been in a relationship, and I do get frustrated about that)
this has been going on for such a long time sometimes you feel like God doesn't want to help you because of your failures or that I know there's a way I can be free but I don't know how to get it cuz people say abiding in Christ or walking in the spirit I know that Christ died for everyone meaning meaning everyone can go to heaven that means everyone has the opportunity to overcome those sins they struggle with and get the victory they want

The catholic church of today would be completely foreign and regarded as heretical by Athanasius. The Roman Catholic church has not had a consistent Theology historically speaking and is still coming up with new Dogma and doctrines. Mary being a co-redemptrix for example. I personally will side with the Lord Jesus Christ and his view of scripture over Athanasius. I'll leave you with the words of Martin Luther: " I cannot submit my faith either to the pope or to the council, because it is clear that they have fallen into error and even into inconsistency with themselves. If, then, I am not convinced by proof from Holy Scripture, or by cogent reasons, if I am not satisfied by the very text I have cited, and if my judgment is not in this way brought into subjection to God's word, I neither can nor will retract anything; for it cannot be either safe or honest for a Christian to speak against his conscience. Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen."

@@jacobwoods6153I disagree. I was at both debates and thought both debaters did a good job. As a protestant, I believe James adequately answered every question. Most of the questions he knocked out of the park. I say this while I laughed with (not at) Trent on several of the funny points he made and was impressed with his memory and debating skills.
In my opinion, James won the first debate by showing the contradictions among Catholic traditions and the absurdity of a claim of verbal tradition that can not be defined or identified until it's dogmatically defined by Rome. The only way we can infallibly know first century doctrine is through Scripture. The best point Trent made was not having a Canon without the church infallibly defining what books belong. However, James refuted this point by saying that Trent's argument is standing in opposition to Jesus' use of the OT Canon.
I think Trent lost the second debate for himself when he contradicted his own church's traditional view of purgatory. His Scriptural arguments were weak. I heard no convincing argument from the Bible or early church history for purgatory.

    1. According to 2Timothy 3:1-17, taken in context, Scripture is limited to the Old Testament only, and includes all of the seven Old Testament books rejected by the reformers.
    2. Scripture does not provide the canon of inspired books within Holy Scripture.
Therefore, how does the Scripture believer know which books are inspired and which books are not?
    3. Scripture does not provide us with a list of uninspired books such as the Gospels of Peter, Paul, and Thomas, and does not explain why those books are not in the Scripture believers Bible. How can the Scripture believer differentiate between which books are inspired and which are not?
    4. Scripture does not provide us with the word "Bible". How then can an Scripture believer even use the word?
    5. Therefore Scripture believers have no way of knowing that the book which they call the Bible is the Bible.
    6. Since Scripture believers cannot show which books in the Bible are inspired,
then they have no right to even call theirs an inspired Bible.
    7. Scripture does not provide us with the word "Trinity". So why do Scripture believers even use the word?
    8. Scripture does not define the Holy Trinity. So why do Scripture believers think it even exists?
    9. Do you believe in "Original Sin"?
Well the words "Original Sin", taken together, are not in the Bible, so how can you believe in it?
    10. Do you believe in the "Incarnation"? How can you when that word is not to be found in Holy Scripture?
    11. Do you believe in the "Ascension"? How can you when that word is not even in your Bible?
    12. Do you believe in something called the "Rapture"? How can you when the word is not to be found in your Bible?
    13. Do you believe in "Christianity"? Well that word cannot be found in the Bible either for Scripture believers.
    14. Do "Protestants" not exist at all simply because that word cannot be found in Scripture?
    15. Where in Scripture are the words, 'we are saved by faith alone'? I can find just one verse where the words "faith" and "only" are found together and there is that little word "not" before them,
"You see that by works a man is justified and not by faith only", James 2:24. I cannot seem to find words in support of 'faith alone', except in Martin Luther's German Bible, where he added the word 'alone' to Romans 3:28. The book of James was a thorn in Luther's side, as it contradicted what he taught. That is the reason why he called that book "a straw epistle", meaning it was good for burning.
    16. The words "Sola Scriptura" do not appear anywhere in the Bible, so how can any Scripture believer poScriptureibly practice it? By its very name, Sola Scriptura, if it is not in the Bible, then it simply is not to be believed. I get that answer all the time from Scripture believers who try to tell me that "everything" is in the Bible, in spite of the fact that the Bible in no way says that. However, the Bible does say that everything is not in the Bible, which is just the exact opposite of what Scripture believers tell me. See John 20:30, and 21:25.
Who should I believe, what Scripture believers tell me, or what the Word of GOD says?
    17. Tell me about the workings of Scripture at the very beginning when the Church was founded by Christ in about 30 A.D., and the first book of the New Testament, 1TheScripturealonians, was not written until over twenty years later? If you would read the book of Acts, you will find that the Church was growing very fast during that period. Three thousand were added in only one day in Acts 2:41, and in Acts 2:27, more were added every day. Acts 4:4 mentions five thousand more believers. How can any Scripture adherent explain this fabulous growth without a New Testament to guide these early believers?
Would an Old Testament Scripture suffice for New covenant teaching?
    18. Scripture could not poScriptureibly have worked for the first 374 years of Christianity (aScriptureuming it began in 30 A.D.), since there was no New Testament at all as we know it until 404 A.D..
    19. Scripture could have not poScriptureibly have worked for over one thousand years after the Latin Vulgate of 404, since the printing preScripture was not invented until 1450 and all Bibles had to be laboriously copied by hand before then. It is estimated that each Bible took from ten to twenty years of a monks daily life to reproduce just one copy. A beautiful opulence abounded in those copies, as many were decorated with real gold and precious jewels. The cost for each was prohibitive. Who of the common maScripturees could afford one?
If GOD needed Scripture then why did He wait over 1400 years before creating Gutenberg so that he could invent the printing preScripture?
    20. Sola Scripture could not have worked at all with the prevalence of illiteracy running as high as 95% for so many centuries.
    21. The false man-made doctrine of sola Scripture does not appear anywhere in genuine historical writings before Martin Luther came along in the sixteenth century and "invented it".
    22. How does the Scripture believer know which Scripture interpretation to believe since each one is his or her own pope? One teaches one thing and another teaches just the opposite. That is the main reason why there are tens of thousands of Scripture believer sects* in the world today, all teaching something different, and all saying "the Holy Spirit told me". Who has the authority for the Scripture believer to say, "This is the one true meaning of Scripture"? The answer is that there is no authority. It is every Scripture believer for himself in Biblical interpretation which is forbidden by Scripture itself for any Scripture believer to do so, Acts 8:26-38, 2Peter 1:20, 2Peter 3:16.
*The World Christianity Encyclopedia, a Protestant publication. It lists 36,400 as of the middle of 2003.
    23. If "everything is in the Bible", so I am told by Scripture believers, then why do Scripture believers not believe and practice all of Scripture? Why do they reject large portions of it? Here are some examples of what they reject:
    * The three verses I just listed which collectively say there is to be no private interpretation of Holy Scripture.
    * 1Corinthians 11:2 and 2TheScripturealonians 2:15, which say to hold the traditions. Scripture believers say do not hold traditions.
    * 1Timothy 3:15, does not say the bible is the pillar and foundation of the truth, but it is the Church.
    * John 10:16, that there shall be one fold and one shepherd, and not the tens of thousands that Scripture believers have formed.
    * 1Corinthians 1:10, that you all say the same thing and that there be no diScriptureensions. Well I have just shown that all of the thousands of sects teach different things, and it is diScriptureensions which cause them to split and form even more sects.
    * John chapter 6 which Scripture believers say is #HYPERLINK "symbol.htm"# HYPERLINK "symbol.htm"symbolic, yet the same ones say that the rest of the Bible is literal.
    * Matthew 16:18 that Jesus said church and not tens of thousands of churches.
    * Matthew 28:20 where Jesus Christ promised to be with His one Church every day in every century until the end of time.
    * Luke 1:48, 'Henceforth', means from this moment on. 'All generations', means just that and I presume that it includes everyone who is reading this file. 'Will', is a command and not a suggestion. 'Call me bleScriptureed'. In all of my extensive conversations with Scripture believers, not a single one has ever obeyed the command of this verse. This verse is proof positive that Scripture believers do not follow Holy Scripture, but pick and choose what fits their false beliefs. It is a clear violation of James 2:10,
"If someone obeys all of GOD's laws except one, that person is guilty of breaking all of them."
    * Luke 2:51, Scripture tells us that the creator of the universe was subject to a creature, His Mother, BleScriptureed Mary, for the first 30 years of His life. Why don't Scripture believers acknowledge this fact?
    * Deuteronomy 4:2, 13:1, Proverbs 30:5-6, Revelation 22:18-20, 'Do not add to or subtract from Holy Scripture' (see #24 below).
    * Deuteronomy 12:8, 'You shall not do as we are now doing; here, everyone does what seems right for himself'.
This is yet another condemnation of individual interpretation of Holy Scripture. "If it fits my interpretation it is right for me".
    * Revelation 21:8, 21:27 and 22:15, that liars will never make it into heaven.
    * Romans 1:18 and 2:8, meet with wrath for those who are contentious and do not submit to the truth. Well I have shown from this lengthy list that Scripture believers are guilty as charged for closing their eyes and ignoring the verses I have listed in this section. They certainly do not submit to the truth of Holy Scripture. Isn't saying that they obey Holy Scripture, while at the same time ignoring large sections of it, being hypocritical?
A verse which I have previously listed cries out to be repeated at this point:
"For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it."
    James 2:10, RSV
"If someone obeys all of GOD's laws except one, that person is guilty of breaking all of them."
    James 2:10, GW
Then there is 1 Peter 4:17, a verse of which all Scripture believers should be aware as they keep in mind the many commands of Scripture which I have listed above and of which some are not obeyed:
"For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?"😎😎

The Torah is absolutely inspired. So are the Prophets. Deuteronomy 13 is the test to see if any prophet, teacher, dreamer, or authority is true or false. I believe all of the 27 books of the "New Testament" pass that test. I believe the books that are included in the modern Bible are there because they A: pass the Deuteronomy 13 test and B: pass the historicity tests through the centuries.
That being said, there maybe should be more writings from the apocrypha that could be included so long as they pass the A and B tests. Some of them might, and some of them are very questionable. I am not an expert on that.
I recommend just reading the scripture and doing what it says. Start with Genesis.

Maybe we have all missed some thing - did Jesus not say man cannot live on bread alone but on every word of God.
Many times - as it is written and will remain written -
We have all gone astray even us protestants hold on to more traditions than what scripture alone actually says eg. The Sabbath is the seventh day - Pass Over and easter are not the same feast even though Paul says in Corinthians we should keep the Pass over feast.
Catholics also claims that the bible is the Word of God ( to not know the Scripture is to jot know Jesus).
Check the catechism ( I think 2170 or around there).
We must stop pointing our fingers at RCC and examine ourselves first and put our own house in order.

    in accordance with the Scriptures.
    He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

We do say the Nicene Creed at EVERY MASS...
Here are the things that truly separate the Church and our Separated Brethren ... (well besides Apostolic Succession and Authority...
By the way, when it comes to the schism with the Eastern Orthodox... They are our closest brothers, but they still have apostolic succession and 7 sacraments. Oh wait, there is yet another key objection you have with Catholics and is in the Nicene Creed... We believe in the forgiveness of sins... As it relates to the Sacrament of Penance or aka Confession.
Really the biggest difference between the Separated Brethren and us Catholics is in every day life:
    The 7 Sacraments
which includes those which are the most practical Confession and the Eucharist... but if you read John 6...
you will know the Catholic Church is the one true church. Be have been obedient for nearly 2,000 years...
