Do Dyson Fans Cool Your Room?

  • In this video we clarify some myths around the cooling power of Dyson fans and look at two great ways to stay cool in the heat by increasing the effectiveness of the cooling power of Dyson fans. Of course the techniques work with other fans too. I use the Dyson AM06 and the Dyson Pure Cool Me in this video.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    What's interesting about Dyson fans though is that their marketing team seem to have convinced a lot of people that Dyson fans actually cool your room - i.e like an air conditioning unit. Which isn't true. I'm not saying they are doing this deliberately as they actually reply to the reviews to clarify that they don't cool your room when someone makes that point in a review.
    However fans can cool 'you' and can actually help cool a room indirectly using two different cooling mechanisms which we explore in this video.
    I also touch on the science behind these processes which is quite fascinating. Newton's law of cooling explains the formula behind how things cool down which reveals which things we can change to increase the power of the cooling.
    The fun one is how we harness the power of evaporative cooling and that's a great trick to stay cool if you're working in front of a computer all day.
    I also reveal one promising technique that I tried but that had a disastrous side effect so don't make the same mistake I made there!

    And one of the most important tips: if the air outside is warmer than the air inside, keep your windows closed. There's no point in sucking warm air into your house/apartment. Also try to cool your home during the night as much as possible since nights are cooler than days. If you manage to cool down the air and structures of your home during the night, it'll take longer for everything to warm up again during the next day.

    Hello! You might try placing the fan into a cake pan, then place the ice blocks around the fan in the pan. You can put a small block under the fan base to lift it up a bit so it doesn't get wet. You might also try placing ice and water in the cake pan. By doing this, you've essentially created what we call in the states a "swamp cooler".
    You might try adding rock salt to the ice water, although it could corrode any electronic parts that aren't sealed.
    Great video!

      I don't know why anyone would expect anything else. Since when do fans cool the air temp in a room? There is no refrigeration system in a fan; evaporative, pressurized or electronic.
      I think my Dyson Pure Cool is neat, but it's not that good of a tower fan, it's loud, and isn't a very effective air purifier. Expensive conversation piece and nothing else.

    You could also try to open a window in a hot room and put the Dyson fan a few meters away from it while the fan is blowing air towards the window. It will create low pressure and will allow additional air to move with it. Think it is called Bernoulli's principles. The TH-cam channel "Science made easy" has a short video explaining it called "Filling a Large Bag in One Breath" the principle is the same. It is pretty cool.
    Also the video was greatly executed and had great tips!

    The process you described of wetting your shirt and letting the fan cool you, is actually an age old trick housewives used to use before electricity. They would take their curtains down at night, dip them in a tub of water and ring them just a bit, hang them back up and the air movement through the window will cool the room. No fan needed. Also a squirt bottle to mist your top sheet before sleeping will do the same thing.
    Thanks for the info on the kitten and windows. We just got 2.

    I put a wet wrung out t-towel in the freezer until it hardens and then place it round the back of my neck. As it unfreezes, the water moistens around the t-shirt. Also wack it on my head sometimes, that and a good fan helps a lot. If I ever get rich, I'll just get air conditioning but until then, it's a t-towel.

    Thanks for this. I became briefly interested in these dyson fans when someone said they had one and “it really cools the room down”. Looking at the product I couldn’t see how it could possibly do this, and the Dyson website didn’t help - just loads of woolly and misleading claims that all their fans do cooling.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem. There can be a room cooling aspect if the outside air is cooler than inside and you use the fan to suck in that cooler air, but then it is just down to cooling you directly. I actually do really rate them (just bought another one!).

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It should also be noted that the amplifer models move a lot of air around with very minimal noise so the ability to bring in cooler air as well as the cooling effect on your skin is all very high for the given noise. Then there is the smoothness of the airflow which is actually not to be underestimated!

    A compressed gas that is then released and the gas expands will cool down. A fan blade compresses the air (even if just a very, very short period of time) and then it is pushed away and it expands again, cooling down. Is this process so tiny that it doesn't even matter? I would like to do an experiment where we make a circle (think tiny Hadron Collider) and the fan pushes the air around and around and around. The idea being the air will go through the fan, be compressed and then expand and cool off and by the time that air comes back around again (the circle is closed) maybe it's 0.1 degree cooler or more and doing this over and over again could cool off the air. Maybe I'm way off, but it would be a fun experiment.

    This shouldn’t even be a question. It’s in the title when it says “fan.” A fan in a closed room will not cause any form or temperature change. Unless the fan is in an open window exhausting hot air or intaking cold air, all it’ll do is blow a breeze on you that’ll give you the illusion of feeling cooler.

    • @jorislal
      @jorislal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not an illusion. As long as your body temperature is warmer than air it will cool your body down by transferring the heat from your body to air faster. It should in theory increase the temperature of air because it moves some energy from objects like your body into air. Air conditioning is of course a lot more effective at cooling your body.

      @@BenVallack What exactly are you getting? It's a $600 fan that does the same job as a regular $20 one. Actually, even as a fan it's pretty bad. You can only feel the wind if you're directly 1 metre in front of it and it's loud as hell. Also dyson is censoring negative reviews so most people who buy it have no idea that it doesn't actually blow cool air, it's just a regular fan that blows wind that you can feel of you're directly in front of it. This is product is beyond bad, it's a downright scam.

      Why spend £400 on a style fan then wrap a few cheap ice blocs round it that mimic air con (till they get warm) ! You could do this with any cheap fan and get identical results as it's exactly what an air cooler is a fan unit that blows over a tank or container containing water or ice blocs creating an evopouritive effort as the breeze passed over it ,just save ,a couple of hundred and buy a genuine portable air con unit our 2 cost us around £400 between them ,used carefully there not that as exspensive to run as people think ours used for limited periods of times keeps us cool just gave to make sure the pipes are vented properly outside the window to vent the excess warm air and doesn't cause us any energy bill shocks ,we also have a£20 tower fans that we use when it's only moderately warm as like the Dyson they circulates the air in the room but there actually more powerful

    Basically Dyson fans just move air around, doing no more cooling than regular fans. Calling them "cooling" is a marketing trick to intentionally confuse buyers into thinking that it also works as AC, so this is on the verge of being a scam. As far as cooling, they are no better than a $15 regular fan. They are a little quieter though, if that's worth extra $600 to you. You can buy an amazing, easy to install, portable AC unit for half that price though, so to me this Dyson fan is just overpriced junk.
