Zenigata is a bizarre character because he is often Inspector Clouseau levels of bumbling and idiotic while simultaneously having not just occasional, but FREQUENT moments where he demonstrated Sherlock Holmes levels of capability. He is literally a walking paradox; a man who misses the dumbest and easiest things to notice but sees obscure, tiny things that aren’t visible to a single other human being
I know most criminals if zengiata wants to or shows interest them he could bring them down with little or no effort, either he to naive in their operations or, their covered up by people high up, or his hands tied behind his back cause red tape. Regardless if guy wants take you down he do it, lupin only one able stay one step ahead of him, why keeps going after him he only one keeps managing to allude him.
Funny thing is half the time Lupin needs his allies to save him. They are all on the same level with Zenigata. Its just 4 vs 1, so its not surprising he loses. Guy is playing against a massive handicap.

From exposing the Money-Laundering ring of Cagliostro to a bomb factory built into an antique airplane, Zenigata has proven his commitment to bringing justice wherever he and Lupin both wind up at.
There's actually an episode in the first series where the set up is that Lupin actually gets caught by Zenigata and is sitting in prison for something like a year awaiting execution. It's been awhile... I should re-watch that series.

What I find even more hilarious is that he says "probably one of those sex dreams I've heard about" almost like it's some sort of illegal activity that seems to be all the rage these days, but he has to rely on hearsay because he's never had one himself. XD And that part near the end is downright heartbreaking. Despite all his yelling, we all could tell he never actually wanted Lupin dead. It's kind of sad that he's come to care so much, but they stand on opposite sides of the law... The guy must be really lonely.

What I didn't like was its treatment of some of the characters, especially Zenigata. Like, I'm sorry but his "deal" with Fujiko and how he behaved towards her in episode 4 ? To me, it just seemed extremely out of character and I couldn't imagine the "real" him ever stooping that low, considering how ridiculously honorable and by the book the man has always prided himself to be in every other adaptation I've seen. My problem isn't that the series tried to show a darker side of him, but that it seemed to rob him of his most defining values and personality traits, to the point that I no longer recognized him. If the intention was to flesh him out, I think it would have made more sense to take a closer look at something truly characteristic, like his enduring obsession with catching Lupin, and maybe explore the possible reasons behind it, or the consequences of that on his life (or apparent lack thereof), instead of bringing Fujiko into it in such a random, needlessly crass manner... and I won't even get started on that Oscar dude. In contrast, I loved the series' take on Jigen's backstory and his more melancholic demeanor in it. I think it successfully added more depth to his character and actually made it even easier to empathize with him, instead of making him come across as a total jerk for no good reason and ruining everything that usually made him likeable, the way I feel it did for Zenigata.

Jigen and Goemon are the same, they just kill more. And Fujiko is very sexuallised but that's always been her character, it's just that her destructiveness is upped to 11. Zenigata on the other hand is a whole different character! And it's a shame cause I love a serious Zenigata who doesn't fuck around and is competent and an actual threat to Lupin. I don't even mind if he's ok with killing Lupin and not just capturing him. But being a dirty cop, groping Fujiko for no reason and accepting to fuck her just to reduce her sentence? That's 100% against what the character stands for, as he's always been a man who was obsessed with enforcing the law and cared not for money or women. To me it just felt like edginess for the sake of being edgy. Thank god they improved him a lot in Goemons Blood Spray.

I feel when writing Zenigata, you need to carefully balance His goofy, hot headed, maniacal, clumsy & sometimes moronic Character with him being an Honorable & Highly Competent Detective. Lupin may be a genius with cartoon plot armor, but Pops is always just one step behind, being the first to figure out Lupin's plan even if at the last second. & every so often arrests & or uncovers the criminal scheme of what ever Super Villian Lupin happened to be stealing from (He manages to keep his job somehow)

Lupin is just my comfort food anime and Pops is a big part of it. Easily my favorite character with part 4-6 being my favorite incarnation. The right balance of goofy but incredibly competent Did try TWCFM though and while I'm down for a serious Zenigata, he's just so.....scummy to the point I just can't finish it

Jigen and Goemon are the same, they just kill more. And Fujiko is very sexuallised but that's always been her character, it's just that her destructiveness is upped to 11.
Zenigata on the other hand is a whole different character! And it's a shame cause I love a serious Zenigata who doesn't fuck around and is competent and an actual threat to Lupin. I don't even mind if he's ok with killing Lupin and not just capturing him. But being a dirty cop, groping Fujiko for no reason and accepting to fuck her just to reduce her sentence? That's 100% against what the character stands for, as he's always been a man who was obsessed with enforcing the law and cared not for money or women. To me it just felt like edginess for the sake of being edgy. Thank god they improved him a lot in Goemons Blood Spray.

I normally have a lot of affection for Zenigata, not only because his clumsy, hysterical presence largely contributes to the more lighthearted series' charm, but also because you gotta respect the man's determination to do what he believes is right. Despite how Lupin (being so clever and slippery) keeps making him look like a bumbling idiot, Zenigata has often proven to be actually quite competent and a lot more perceptive than he gets credit for. There's gotta be a reason why he's the only cop able to see through Lupin's schemes and even anticipate some of his moves. That's the kind of content I would have liked to see explored in a more serious light. And even though I especially love the fact that he and Lupin have this sort of almost friendly rivalry going on where neither one truly wants to harm the other, I too would still have found a colder Zenigata willing to stop the thief and his gang at any cost more believable and interesting than the absurd display of corruption and sexist talk we got from him in The Woman.
You're right though : Goemon's Blood Spray thankfully got him mostly back in character and it was much better ! I really do enjoy seeing a darker interpretation now and then, when less censoring and filtering allows a deeper character development and a more realistic continuity. But stuff that glaringly tries, as you said, to be edgy just for the sake of being edgy, by randomly adding in some needless "mature" elements, only exasperates me.

I feel when writing Zenigata, you need to carefully balance His goofy, hot headed, maniacal, clumsy & sometimes moronic Character with him being an Honorable & Highly Competent Detective. Lupin may be a genius with cartoon plot armor, but Pops is always just one step behind, being the first to figure out Lupin's plan even if at the last second. & every so often arrests & or uncovers the criminal scheme of what ever Super Villian Lupin happened to be stealing from (He manages to keep his job somehow)
Its those super criminals. Plus its shown. Lupin is the ONLY criminal who can escape him

Lupin is just my comfort food anime and Pops is a big part of it. Easily my favorite character with part 4-6 being my favorite incarnation. The right balance of goofy but incredibly competent
