  • Review of APEMAN H40 Mini Wildlife Camera
We use field cameras at home to monitor what happens in our garden overnight and when we're not around and have caught an array of wildlife including hedgehogs, badgers and a large fox. We also once spotted a prowler so have additional hidden cameras incase he should ever return. A few miles from home we also have a small piece of woodland frequented by deer, foxes and the occasional wild boar and, less welcome, a few regular trespassers and we plan to use our ApeMan camera there once we're released from Covid-lockdown. Field cameras are brilliant for recording visitors, wildlife and human, welcome and otherwise.
Of our 16 cameras, this ApeMan camera is by far the smallest, neatest and most compact design while also being robust and weatherproof, having been left out in rain, frost and snow to date. We also particularly like the micro-SD memory card slot being on the top of the camera where is it accessible. Most other cameras place it on the underside where it is very fiddly to reach once in situ and has led to several dropped and a few lost memory cards. This is also the first camera we've used which displays the remaining battery capacity percentage. Although alkaline or lithium batteries are recommended for best performance, we used four rechargeable AA batteries and, after recording 170 still images and 170 videos of 10 seconds duration in pitch black conditions between -5°C and +2°C, 80% battery capacity still remained which is excellent and battery performance exceeds all of the other cameras we've used. Used over a month in rain, hail, frost, snow and sleet, 65% battery capacity remained in photo-only mode using Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries suggesting battery life could be 3 months, or longer using alkaline.
The set-up menus are completely different on this camera. Firstly, this camera has only two power button positions, ie On-Off rather than the usual additional centre-button to access the set-up mode too. To access the menu, the up arrow is pressed for about 5 seconds to access the highly intuitive menu with a wide range of settings for photo size (up to 16MP), video resolution (up to 1080p) and length (up to 3 minutes) along with time lapse, security password, clock and other routine settings. The camera can record both still photos and video simultaneously. Playback is accessed by long-pressing the down-arrow. A webbing strap is supplied to fasten the camera to a tree truck, plus a plate with tripod mount for fixing it to a post or shed roof and a standard tripod screw fitting on the rear of the camera, rather than the base for easy fitting. Either are recommended because the camera is a little wobbly and needs to be propped on its base or it easily topples over in breeze.
I have been very impressed by the sensitivity of the camera and the clarity of both still images and video even though I set the camera to just 5MP and video at 720P with bright, clear daytime images even in our cloudy, murky January weather and crisp images with good definition at contrast in complete darkness. The results are of a much higher quality than some of our field cameras at more than 3x the price. At present, the camera is under £40 on Amazon UK which is exceptional value for money and I would happily pay double for it.
This is a camera I would happily order again and would recommend to anyone looking for a field camera.
