I actually super dig this channel. Its like all the other video/photo channels out there, except that you bring up topics about stuff I really care to learn more about. You have got me thinking outside the box more when I approach my shoots. Great videos. I refuse to unsubscribe.
@@EpicLightMedia I have been trying so hard for a year to copy your set up. The outcome is not even close compare to yours even I got the wall color the lamp light the tube light the 300ii led light the diffuser reflector with black magic pocket cinema camera 6k

You are one of the best teacher that I have in TH-cam. Thanks for teaching and sharing us everytime. This incredible knowledge that you are giving us, help us the most.
Dude you're the BEST for saying what you said about subscribing to other channels. I found this channel after a long search for good diffusion videos, and just that statement alone makes me want to watch everything. good job man
One interesting note: take a look at the colors when they the bedsheet and the cheap shower courtain. They have a slight purplish blueish tint character to it. And when you check the bleached muslin, there’s a much more balanced color of light, being the explanation of why it’s used in professional sets. Amazing video, really
Many white sheets (and vinyl curtains) use a blueing agent that makes them appear 'ultra-white', and helps delay the inevitable UV yellowing that naturally occurs. As long as you account for that when white balancing, it will look okay on camera.
I only use muslin for bounce on interiors… and it’s lovely to see your brother chilling. I could not have had mine do the same without at least one good cup of coffee.
Watched so many videos about softbox and etc. This is the only video that touched on the difference between the diffusion materials from two worlds, photography and film making. It would be nice to have a side by side comparison of the natural light and other diffused light, and point out what exactly you are looking for or what you don't like to see, and in the end a quick summary. For instance, my takeaway from this video is the diffusion material also matters. Before I stumbled on this video, I thought the size of the diffusion was the only thing matters, since pros must have figured out the best material long time before.
I am sorry. I have watched soooo many of your videos and I have learned more than I ever thought possible, and I haven't liked or commented on these. Thanks! And last shot was amazing!
@@EpicLightMedia Oh and btw. Just realized I faced the same problem as you with the bad background on my latest upload. Hopefully someone can help us out with that.
14:39 now I understood why you are saying about don’t subscribe. Thought you are saying a joke. But I just read about the recommendation system of the TH-cam algorithm and recognized you are serious about it. I’m struggling with getting subscribers now but your explanation helped me to settle down. Thanks
I'm using black voile as an ND alternative, you can't really shoot through it but its great if hung or taped outside a window to drop the exposure level if you are lighting with natural light. I also use black and charcoal grey shower curtains as negative fill or to completely block out a window or to flag light spill. Thanks for the awesome content!
This is absolutely my kind of video. I'm all about using stuff from a high-street store that cost about the same as a couple of coffees, so many thanks for pointing me to several things I should have thought of myself already!
When youtube first suggested this I thought it was an imitation of Red Letter Media (by name mostly)but now I see its a combination of the film making and honesty and editing I like in RLM, combined with the gear reviews from DSLRvideoshooter. Great channel, happy I found it.
So I found you via TH-cam's algorithm but I have to say that I really appreciate your breakdown of diffusion. It is something that I try to explain to many new people coming in to video and film. Also I will be subscribing and hopefully we can collaborate in the future.
The more corporate projects I take on the more I appreciate ease of setup and speed. Modern's stuff is great, I love setting up large frames, but the speed and ease of using something like the Aputure lantern just works so well for those small office spaces. The inclusion of a skirt is icing on the cake for spill control. My favorite diffusion though is Half Soft Frost. Basically similar to a frosted shower curtain. It doesn't eat much light output and is perfect for diffusing bright light sources like the sun outdoors without looking too shaded.
I primarily shoot photography. I have been doing more and more video and loving the challenges it comes with it. I have been watching your channel for some time now and have taken some of the knowledge to apply it to both my photography and videography. Love the channel and am glad to see it has grown because I can tell you guys put a lot of effort into making these videos.
Thanks ELM, this is really helpful! I’ll will be doing my own diy light diffusers for a shoot next week and I’ll be really happy to share the results or even the bts! Thanks for inspiring
Lol I searched all my life for a channel like this, so it’s funny that you referenced a searcher like me at the end of this video... like imagine years of asking for answers 🥲and finding this channel which ALSO reminds me of my favorite show, ‘The Office’. The universe is a funny place. Anyway, glad I’ve had fun during the years of search because this was so worth the wait.
I've been learning so much from this channel over the last couple of weeks - great stuff and always a joy to watch! I'd love to see you guys buy one of the cheaper budget lighting kits from Amazon, like the newer LED version of the "Mountdog" softbox, and modify it 5 different ways with budget modifiers to make it even better :)
My go-to diffusion setup has been either to T-bar the diffusion piece in my 31"x47" 5-in-1 reflector and shine a godox sl60w through it, or use a 65" photography shoot-through love your videos!
I’ve gone to Joanns which is a fabric store and got 3 yards of nylon ripstop and added some grommets on the corners and use it as a DIY scrim. Works beautifully
When I'm on the street at night? A small lantern capable of 1.000 lumens against a white wall or one with a warmer color. Never fails. I loved your content!
I use some 48inch softboxes but have just gotten into larger sources and love my Magic Cloth 8x8. I've double diffused the magic cloth and OOHHHH MMYYY the soft light is something else!
Ending with the shower curtain, nice, you dirty dirty man. Loved the variety, techniques used, model's patience, video/audio production and editing. Well done. Adding a shower curtain to my next Walmart run.
This is amazing! I’ve been using a 5 in 1 reflector with diffusion as my main set up, but I really like the shower curtain! Going to try it on an upcoming shoot
Funny thing is, I found this channel just how you wanted me to find it :-D I was looking everywhere for a really good channel that could teach me alot of valuable knowledge, and I found the video of "screen direction" and I knew right there, whom I was going to learn alot from. You all are wonderful. Thank you for all that you've taught me, and teaching me.
Great video : D, I really liked the muslin bleached and unbleached. I often use a thin white fabric used to cover plants in the spring so they get protected against the frost. You got a sub : D even if you don't like it!
well the general rule of thumb when it comes to lighting is the bigger the light source the softer the light. i think the curtains and paper are the most portable solutions as you can slip them anywhere. but you may need additional clamps and stand. or you can bounce them if you have a white ceiling as long as you have a strong light source with high output. (thats what i do sometimes)
My tots fav was the roll of paper. Super affordable, easy to mount, and I liked the light a bit better. Right now, I am using a LED light with an umbrella for diffusion. I just got a key light so I can match the lights in the background. It's a super cheap set up but it's all I have for now. I also missed Lynn in this video.
I am using simple led bulbls with umbrella diffusion and sometimes i diffuse light with 5 in 1 reflector diffusion sheet. As a hair light I use ulanzi small rechargeable led light. in background some practical led lights.
So. First, another great video. So great it probably shouldn’t be free. Ok, so I loved the bleached white muslin as well as the shower curtain. Foe me the deterrent for both of those is not the amount of time it takes to set up, but the much more amount of time it takes to control background spill.
I'm guessing I need to try out the shower curtain. Only recently started using Aputure Lightdome ii, but wanted to figure out to modify the light further for a softer look without spending more money and this was it!
@@EpicLightMedia Its definitely allowed me to be a bit more ambitious with some of my videos. Especially enjoy it for product videos. The top down shots make it easily worth the money.
I recently had a look around and a 4x4 muslin frame like you used here will cost you about 60 dollars, but if you go to a fabrics/textiles store you can get muslin for like 8 bucks for a 4x4 piece. Just gotta make your own frame if you really want it, but it's a super affordable way to get some super nice looking diffusion!
Great video! I've been using the space light, lantern, and light dome. For massive windows, i use bleached muslin with suction cup clips and this all works great!
These are all great. I'm more in the photography side of thing, how would you work this kind of lighting in a very small room ? Getting that milky diffuse light while not spilling everywhere ? I'm thinking flags but if anyone would have any input or ideas, they would be appreciated !
I use the light dome 2 but I've always wanted to test shower liner or a cheap bed sheet to get a larger diffusion area. The Aputure Lantern looks really handy (Light Dome is a little clunky and I often don't bother to bring it)
I've never looked up the cost of C-Stands. HOLY WOW XD That was an odd surprise for the price. Ive been using an ElGato KeyLight as my key light for a little bit now. It's a soft side lit LED panel and it's been doing an alright job. Usually I have clamp lights with some type of thin soft white paper over them. Ive even used paper towel before XD
Love the video! Learned a ton!!! However, if you want the light to be motivated by the practical, why do we put a the key-light on opposite side of the frame?
The bathroom sheet I will use with 30 Euro 40 watt bright LED light source that I have. Great idea, thanks for sharing. I will say, finding your channel was very useful.
