Dude you're the BEST for saying what you said about subscribing to other channels. I found this channel after a long search for good diffusion videos, and just that statement alone makes me want to watch everything. good job man
When I'm on the street at night? A small lantern capable of 1.000 lumens against a white wall or one with a warmer color. Never fails. I loved your content!
One interesting note: take a look at the colors when they the bedsheet and the cheap shower courtain. They have a slight purplish blueish tint character to it. And when you check the bleached muslin, there’s a much more balanced color of light, being the explanation of why it’s used in professional sets. Amazing video, really
Many white sheets (and vinyl curtains) use a blueing agent that makes them appear 'ultra-white', and helps delay the inevitable UV yellowing that naturally occurs. As long as you account for that when white balancing, it will look okay on camera.
I'm using black voile as an ND alternative, you can't really shoot through it but its great if hung or taped outside a window to drop the exposure level if you are lighting with natural light. I also use black and charcoal grey shower curtains as negative fill or to completely block out a window or to flag light spill. Thanks for the awesome content!

I use some 48inch softboxes but have just gotten into larger sources and love my Magic Cloth 8x8. I've double diffused the magic cloth and OOHHHH MMYYY the soft light is something else!
I recently had a look around and a 4x4 muslin frame like you used here will cost you about 60 dollars, but if you go to a fabrics/textiles store you can get muslin for like 8 bucks for a 4x4 piece. Just gotta make your own frame if you really want it, but it's a super affordable way to get some super nice looking diffusion!
I primarily shoot photography. I have been doing more and more video and loving the challenges it comes with it. I have been watching your channel for some time now and have taken some of the knowledge to apply it to both my photography and videography. Love the channel and am glad to see it has grown because I can tell you guys put a lot of effort into making these videos.
My tots fav was the roll of paper. Super affordable, easy to mount, and I liked the light a bit better. Right now, I am using a LED light with an umbrella for diffusion. I just got a key light so I can match the lights in the background. It's a super cheap set up but it's all I have for now. I also missed Lynn in this video.
Honestly, I've been shooting a video every day since the beginning of the pandemic, and my go-to method for softening lights has been to blast them against walls and ceilings. I've been experimenting each day with my positioning vs the spot the light hits and how far the light is from the wall or ceiling it's pointed at. I seem to have the best luck in rooms with higher, vaulted ceilings, which put the light source at a similar angle to what you'd typically aim for with more traditional lighting styles. Great video! I'm probably gonna go buy a shower liner now 😂
I've never looked up the cost of C-Stands. HOLY WOW XD That was an odd surprise for the price. Ive been using an ElGato KeyLight as my key light for a little bit now. It's a soft side lit LED panel and it's been doing an alright job. Usually I have clamp lights with some type of thin soft white paper over them. Ive even used paper towel before XD
I’m using a DIY ringlight of 1 meter of diameter with 10 leds bulbs. And 2 leds reflectors of 50 W each. I´m starting in videoghaphy. Thank you so much for your amazing videos!
So. First, another great video. So great it probably shouldn’t be free. Ok, so I loved the bleached white muslin as well as the shower curtain. Foe me the deterrent for both of those is not the amount of time it takes to set up, but the much more amount of time it takes to control background spill.
I like Rosco or Lee 1 stop diffusion and will often do multiple layers of it. In a quick pinch, I'll tent it loosely over a panel with masking tape. Will also blast HMI, tungsten or LED through a ScrimJim with 1 or 2 stop diffusion. I've even used white tee shirts directly over strobe heads for 2 reasons. Depending on the thickness, it can act as neutral density to take stop off and add softness. Various frosts are good too if the skin is young enough to take it. Aesthetically, the most flattering professional diffusion is Elinchrom's. Chimera is 2nd. Love unbleached mus too. I shoot beauty ads mostly for what it's worth.
I use the FotodioX EZ-PRO softbox (direct competitor to the Aputure dome) except it's easier to setup and about $100 cheaper at only $120 on B&H. I use that on nearly 90% of my shoots. If I'm filming anything with food/appliances and I need to fill an entire room, then I definitely go the route of scrim jims on c-stands. But I imagine a sheet would work just as well as a scrim jim. I only use framed scrim jims because of the pro look that some clients expect on set. Other clients don't give a rip.
Thanks ELM, this is really helpful! I’ll will be doing my own diy light diffusers for a shoot next week and I’ll be really happy to share the results or even the bts! Thanks for inspiring
The bathroom sheet I will use with 30 Euro 40 watt bright LED light source that I have. Great idea, thanks for sharing. I will say, finding your channel was very useful.
I'm guessing I need to try out the shower curtain. Only recently started using Aputure Lightdome ii, but wanted to figure out to modify the light further for a softer look without spending more money and this was it!
@@EpicLightMedia Its definitely allowed me to be a bit more ambitious with some of my videos. Especially enjoy it for product videos. The top down shots make it easily worth the money.
Great video! I've been using the space light, lantern, and light dome. For massive windows, i use bleached muslin with suction cup clips and this all works great!
For corporate interview shoots, a 3x4' softbox with internal/external diffusion and grid (if I'm going for spill control). It's very quick to setup, easy to direct, and doesn't take up too much space when set at the typical height just over the talent's head. Having a grid is crucial if I'm in a white-walled room, or limited space. 42" umbrella is quicker, but spills too wide. Octobox took too long to setup, but was more flattering in terms of catchlights. When spill isn't an issue, go big for beauty, 4x4 book light or larger if I'm working with an assist.
I've been learning so much from this channel over the last couple of weeks - great stuff and always a joy to watch! I'd love to see you guys buy one of the cheaper budget lighting kits from Amazon, like the newer LED version of the "Mountdog" softbox, and modify it 5 different ways with budget modifiers to make it even better :)
This is amazing! I’ve been using a 5 in 1 reflector with diffusion as my main set up, but I really like the shower curtain! Going to try it on an upcoming shoot
You can also replicate Rembrand's atelier setup. He had a muslin hanging horizontally above his window, basically a key light with a bounced top light. Gorgeous.
I use the light dome 2 but I've always wanted to test shower liner or a cheap bed sheet to get a larger diffusion area. The Aputure Lantern looks really handy (Light Dome is a little clunky and I often don't bother to bring it)
I am learning so much from you channel! I love the shower curtain but I think the light dome ii is the best bet for quick setup, I just ordered the light dome ii and the mini ii, for interviews - going to try using them with a black pro mist 1/4 on the a7siii and see if that look is soft enough for older women with wrinkles during interviews. Im a one man setup so can't see myself bothering with multiple light stands
See I don't know what your speaking about unsubscribing thing but people out there yt holds to a single situation and describes it... But u literally divide topics in an organised and point which makes these videos like lessons.... Which is much more helpful for me!
Ending with the shower curtain, nice, you dirty dirty man. Loved the variety, techniques used, model's patience, video/audio production and editing. Well done. Adding a shower curtain to my next Walmart run.
I use neewer diffusion fabric. I bought it for $20 like 4 years ago after a watched a ‘DSLR video shooter cheap light kit’ video. I instantly subscribed to his channel. This channel though, not quite yet.
Can we get some video production tips for the business side of the industry? I love all the content but I think this "business content" would add so much more to this channel!
Love the cheap hacks, something about getting a lot more than expected out of a throwaway that appeals to the amateur filmmaker in me. Nothing sucks worse than spending a fortune on a piece of gear that works half-assed, It's a real motivation killer. The one thing I did stumble on that looks killer is to use a well diffused cool blue white (5500k) for the keylight and a warm background (3200k) or an light orange gel on a bounce for the fill. It makes faces really look good!
I like how you said that most cinematographers won't use a soft box and that it's more of a photography thing because it's true, they are using 4x4 diffusions and using flags to control spill.
Funny thing is, I found this channel just how you wanted me to find it :-D I was looking everywhere for a really good channel that could teach me alot of valuable knowledge, and I found the video of "screen direction" and I knew right there, whom I was going to learn alot from. You all are wonderful. Thank you for all that you've taught me, and teaching me.
I like the Muslin, but I’m interested in trying the shower curtain especially if it’s that cheap. Thanks for the video I like how helpful and funny they are.
well the general rule of thumb when it comes to lighting is the bigger the light source the softer the light. i think the curtains and paper are the most portable solutions as you can slip them anywhere. but you may need additional clamps and stand. or you can bounce them if you have a white ceiling as long as you have a strong light source with high output. (thats what i do sometimes)
Great video : D, I really liked the muslin bleached and unbleached. I often use a thin white fabric used to cover plants in the spring so they get protected against the frost. You got a sub : D even if you don't like it!
I've been using a bedsheet with my Nanlite Forza 60. Works great. I think I'm gonna try and find a thinner shower curtain though. Both really great options! Some people I work with don't understand that the size of the light source determines the softness not the plastic/paper you put on the light. It's whatever though. lol
I've always liked bleached Muslin but never really tested it compared to Rosco/Lee Signature 216, I can't tell if it's just because the Muslin sucked more light away and balanced the image more but it looked incredible... There's a reason Roger Deakins uses it all the time.
I watched this video a couple of months ago and shamelessly stole the shower-curtain idea. I can confirm that it works a treat, and what's more I can often get away without carrying a stand to support it as most of the venues I work at have a wardrobe rail sitting around somewhere.
This might have saved me a ton of money. I produce yoga content which is mostly full body wide shots. I need a better key light. Currently using godox vl-300 and a 48” parabolic softbox. I have a studio so portability doesn’t matter but I want a big source and I’d prefer if it also adds light to the background. I think I’ll give the shower curtain a try, but it certainly seems that shoot through diffusion is the way to go. Love this channel! Love it so much I unsubscribed and refuse to tell my friends about it. Also, make sure you eat at Someburros!
Hey I shoot video for Yoga as well. Getting enough light has been a problem for me too. Right now I mount a Godox sl150ii and two sl60ws onto a “baby triple header” on a light stand shooting through an umbrella for my key light, as well as another sl60w through an unbrella for fill. If I have window light I will throw up a reflector to bounce some in also. I have to really watch my framing and get the lights as close as I can without messing up the shot.
@@mitchlazorko that’s a really cool option. I’ve never rigged multiple lights together like that. Seems more economical than trying to get all that firepower in a single light. The wide shots are tough. I much prefer shooting a meditation or restorative class where the framing is much tighter.

Man...that unbleached muslin looks good. I may have to pick some up.
Unbleached and Bleached muslin from Joan's Fabrics... you will thank me later.
Can confirm. Just got some the other day my guy and used it on a shoot. So good.
@@JakeHGuy amen, muslin is muslin, the film companys dont do anything different so neither should you
Great video guys! I usually just throw up a lantern but watching this i'm seriously considering the shower curtain.
Exactly the video I needed to watch right now! Only thing is I don't have time :D
Great as always!
I use baking paper to soften the light from my LED panels and create a bigger lights source - and it works well for the most part.
I like how you said that most cinematographers won't use a soft box and that it's more of a photography thing because it's true, they are using 4x4 diffusions and using flags to control spill.
THis is SOOO helpful. Crazt that the shower curtain is just as good if not better than everything else
Because Lynne is gone, I'm subscribing just to punish you.
DANG! We better find her. FAST!
#LynnBack #SaveLynn #FindLynn I’m searching so hard in France 🇫🇷 she is not there ! Anyone have seen Lynn ?!? Please tell us !!
@@KevinMK She is in Poland neer my house. Miłego dnia!
I love Lynn, but is it possible to bring back michelle on some occasion ? :D
Hey Hun, it must be difficult having such an achingly good looking brother! Great video as ever!
Could you try testing this diffusion with a smaller more portable light source? Something bright but that could even be handheld?
well the general rule of thumb when it comes to lighting is the bigger the light source the softer the light. i think the curtains and paper are the most portable solutions as you can slip them anywhere. but you may need additional clamps and stand. or you can bounce them if you have a white ceiling as long as you have a strong light source with high output.
It's whatever though. lol
Awesome Job man!
Best video @epiclightmedia
@@altmanator I agree, shooting a meditation is such a relief
