PLEASE READ: I noticed something I think you'll find interesting. back in "do princesses dream of magical sheep" you commented on how it was suprising that Big Mac dreamed of using magic considering since he never expressed that desire. but in the first scene, when Granny Smith pointed out the old toy to him she mentioned how much Apple Bloom loved how he made that toy fly and it "was like she thought you used magic". what if Big Mac's desire to secretly use magic is just from being idolized by his sister

    On your questions:
    1. My reaction was 20 seconds of shocked silence, trying to get what was going on, before a 10 second uncontrollable giggle fit.
    2. Big Mac was HILARIOUS in this episode. I loved his 'antics' to death!
    3. As I don't have any siblings at all... No. However, I can say that it was still meaningful and heartwarming, despite the un-relatable circumstances.
    4. I don't thing honestly that we'll see much more of these two together, but if we shall, then I'd say that I'd love to see an episode where they discuss the conflict of "the pen is mightier than the sword," or "actions speak louder than words," with them being in so,e kind of situation where applebloom takes the diplomatic approach, and Big Mac goes for a more direct tactic. Not sure what exactly, but i think that that could really work.

Well, when I first saw "her" I simply left the phone and went out for a walk (laughing like an idiot, of course)
I loved this episode: funny, touching, weird -as hell- and not that predictable. I like Big Mac overall; he's such a good guy

+DRWolf001 When I first saw Big Mac, my mouth dropped wide open until the commercial break started. My step father was watching a few yards behind me, but this was our exact dialogue from the both of us:
    Me: "Adam?"
    Adam: "Yes?"
Me: "You just saw what I just saw, right?"
    Adam: "E'yup."
Both of us: "Big Mac is a crossdresser."

It was impressive as we have gotten the most dialogue out of Big Mac in the history of the show. Up until now, he was always the strong silent type who didn't have to say much for others to understand what he's talking about.

  • @MikeDragon

This has got to be one of the funniest episodes in the entire show so far! XD I always liked Big Mac but I never realized how awesome he actually is. The fact alone that he'd put himself under such trouble and embarrassment (and perhaps even some humiliation) just so he could make his little sister happy (besides making himself feel better, as well. But mostly making his sister happy) shows how much he cares about his family. And honestly? Hear him on a speaking role alone is always a big amusement, but hear him doing something so unexpected and speaking all throughout while at it completely broke me. I completely lost it in so many occasions while watching this episode. XD
I wish we'll get more episodes in which Big Mac has a larger speaking role beyond his traditional eyups and nopes. Wouldn't hurt to give him more screen time more often!
P.S: And on that note, I still wish for a Celestia and Luna-centered episode. Or at least Celestia (since Luna sorta already had her Luna-focused episodes but not Celestia). I'd LOVE to see more of them interacting as sisters. What we saw from them in Slice of Life only left me wanting more.

I really hope that, if it doesn't already exist, they put on an actual brotherhooves social in addition to the sisterhooves. It would be great to see more interaction with the main characters and their family members plus it would be a lot of fun to see AJ and Big Mac go up against Twilight and Shining Armor

Great review, Doc. :3 You mentioned Mac's princess dream and how no one saw this coming. I have to agree there but it's interesting to think of it in reverse.
Now that we've seen that Mac's been dealing with the feeling of being in his sister's shadow with his ordinariness, to me it gives a whole new context as to why that might be his dream self. Just food for thought~!

The last time Big Mac ever spoke more than two words at a time was... Ponyville Confidential.
    Episode 49!!!
59 episodes since a solid Big Mac speaking role (as singing doesn't count since it's a rehearsed song and not singing as exposition or anything similar).
Also, 108 episodes before Big Mac gets his own monologue, and EVEN THEN it's at the end of the episode. I'm pretty sure Big Mac's Monologue is going to become a video of its own just to show Big Mac speaking.

I was actually kinda scared that this episode would make big Mac more of a softer male, compared to spike, and other males in mlp. They did that, but with a mature way, and made it look like family would be the only reason he would change to...a...Orchard Blossom.

This episode had me going "wut" more times than I've ever done before. It all made sense but my mind had an extremely hard time wrapping around it. Even when I was telling what happened I couldn't stop saying "wut". It was a nice for him to do it but I keep on remember when Granny said "the term "sister" is rather loose for this" or something and I couldn't stop questioning why he dressed up if the word "sister" is meaningless.

I was shocked when I first saw "Orchard Blossom" via a preview clip a couple of days before the episode aired, but my reaction quickly turned to laughter as I thought it was just hilarious. Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo's respective reactions to seeing this cousin of Applebloom's is just priceless, for I don't think they were prepared to see something like that.

One thing that I thought was funny was the bit at the beginning, where Granny is having Big Mac help her look for a prize ribbon. By itself it's only mildly humorous, but the way those two were in that scene was so much like how my mom and I were while trying to pack and unpack for an interstate move that, to me, it was HILARIOUS!

Actually looking back at the princess bigmac thing....... It actually makes more sense now. Alicorns are basically heroes to ponies. They are the most powerful of their kind and typically exist to defend them against terrible fiends. Bgimac wanting to be an alicorn would make sense then if he has feeling unimportan.t

+D HAROLD () I disagree. The only one that really seemed a bit humiliated, was Applebloom, while Big Mac was committed to the cause of giving her a win in the event! I personally don't like cringe humour, but in this episode, I found none! ********************************************************************************************** I found it hilarious with the contrast between Big Mac's size, regular manners and speech, and the mannerism and speech of "Orchard Blossom", as well as the attempts on not getting revealed as a stallion, more for the risk of getting disqualified than for any humiliation.

This has become my favorite episode. Being a big brother myself this episode shows how far siblings will go to help. Also the feelings that come when your younger siblings start to find other role models and broaden their horizons. It also provides one of the most honest and touching scene's I've seen to date in mlp with the final Big Mac and Applebloom talk. As for Orchard Blossom this is something I'm sure is going to provide inspiration comedic and otherwise to the fandom. I have to Agree entirely with you Dr Wolf for a another spot on review thank you :-)

I am so happy that they finally showed one of the males in the series, well one of the regular males, as something other then a flat window dressing. And overall the drive he had to try and make his baby sister happy was very heart warming. I think this one is going to be my new favorite episode of the entire generation.

I am the oldest of my 2 other siblings like Big Mac, so this episode really hit me hard. That last scene almost caused me to tear up, which isn't hard to do, but coming from MLP? Almost unheard of. I felt myself connecting with Mac on so many levels and it really added a new layer to his character and caused me to love him even more. This episode was by far one of my favorites this season.

I would like to see Apple Bloom and Big Mac have a stand alone episode based on them both taking up Bowling for the first time and this will be the perfect time for them to make their bonds grow even stronger and as for them both they will have the best day ever.
Who knows what lies around the corner.
Maybe Big Mac is the only one who can help Apple Bloom earn her Cutie Mark by rewarding her with a "Apple Shaped Bowling Ball" Cutie Mark as a symbol of her skill with a Bowling Ball and you can just imagine the joy Apple Bloom would feel if Big Mac helped her achieve her long lost dream of having a Cutie Mark.Apple Bloom will always look at her flank knowing her Big Brother got her the Cutie Mark and she will always cherish it and to respect him a lot more.
I know this is just my theory but there is no harm in discussing it.

I did see that coming after I read the description on wiki. I thank that the writer should create a new team of hero, which mean that we already have main six and CMC, so is time to create a new team. My suggestion is Big Mac that should be part of the team or Spike, so they will have a chance to be hero.

Hey DrWolf love your content, this is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Not because of Big Mac dressing as a mare (while that was funny that was more awkward than anything) no, what I enjoyed was toward the end with Big Mac's speech, that made me tear up. Definitely woth the wait for a Big Mac episode. I could see where Big Mac was coming from and at the same time I could see why Applebloom was acting that way as well, which is awesome. And I loved the scenes between Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo, they were great!

I was grandly entertained by the episode. And it did strike home for me a bit. As a big brother to lots of sisters, I've had some moments when I've felt marginalized or unappreciated in the family, especially as my siblings grew older. But I've been comforted to know that my efforts are still appreciated and that I'm still a good big brother in their eyes.

Best episode of the season for me, right in front of the three Rarity episodes we just had. Sadly, it triggered a bunch of hatred from trans activists on Tumblr and other websites and they're currently tearing a new hole to the writers. Since when is drag considered "transmysoginist?" Drag queens, crossdressers don't mean to insult transwomen. They're two, three even, groups of people. People are just people. If a silly cartoon is triggering you, than I swear you need to review your priorities.

Probably because I had more the feeling that Big Mac would not be humiliated if revealed, just disqualified. And eventually that assessment proved kind of correct, but he wasn't even disqualified, he and Applebloom was instead disqualified for lacking sportsmanship!

OH. MY GOD!! I cried tears of joy during that scene at the end. I LOVED this episode! It was funny, it was sweet, and it was SO MOVING at the end! I LOVE it! Your highlighting of Sweetie Blooms lack of observation, and Big Mac's noticing it (with his TRUE observation skills) was very observant of you, Doc. :D How fitting! ^_^

I really enjoyed this episode, the ending was a very good one and its really the most we've had Big Mac talk at all (Outside the Southern Belle voice that is) and it was very sincere, I hope that Big Mac carries the lesson from this episode with him and learns to open up more, maybe it'll reflect in other aspects of his life and he'll have more speaking parts for it ^ ^
Per usual, great episode, Doc! Keep up the great work!

Overall, this episode definitely through me for a loop. I can honestly say I did not see it coming when Big Mac showed up in drag (which literally made me stare with my mouth hanging open). Perfectly executed with that one, especially the voice he chose to sell the act. It's good to know that every pony still managed to see through his ruse, but decided to go along with it anyway out of respect for his noble intentions. That's excluding that one older guy who seemed to be genuinely taken with Big Mac's performance. Seriously, I love the fact that the big guy finally got an episode devoted to him, as well as his relationship with Apple Bloom. That and the fact that he got a lot more dialogue here than his usual monosyllabic lines of eeyup and nope. I always enjoy episodes that allow him to speak full sentences. Definitely one of my favorites of the season. On a tangentially related note, this is the third episode we've had in a row that has not featured either Pinkie or Fluttershy. I hope they both get some love in the next one.

It's an episode that will really play with your emotions. It has scenes that can make you laugh out loud and scenes that can make your eyes tear (tbh, I teared a little). It's nice having episodes like this from time to time, giving focus to other than the Mane 6. Most sincerest episode so far for me, followed by "Amending Fences". Amazing Job to the writers!

I love how Big Mac seems to have an easier time expressing his thoughts in the guise of Orchard Blossom. Either he feels more comfortable when he feels under cover or he simply is method acting as a character he created. Still it seems relatable to me that it's easier to say what you're thinking when you're not yourself. Take, for instance, when you're commenting under a user name verses speaking up in a group of people who know you and whom you see often... ;)

This is the only episode of this show that legit made me cry. It makes up for the boring episodes of this season. I was starting to lose hope in season five but this episode single-handedly restored my faith in it. Rarity Investigates was also a good episode and gave me hope that the season would change itself around. But this episode convinced me to hang out for a great season finish. I also have a personal connection to this episode for various reasons. This episode was an animated masterpiece. It has a timeless message for all ages and generations. This is the kind of episodes that should be coming out of the show, not stuff like Princess Spike. I think we can all agree Princess Spike was the lowest point of MLP history.

I'm the oldest of three siblings and the second oldest of six SUPER close cousins (So close they might as well have been siblings as well). My brother is currently in the marines but was always good at sports. My sister was heavy into music and always got really good grades. My cousins have also been excellent at music, grades and sports. This left...me, the basic black sheep. I was smart, but my grades didn't show it. I played the violin for awhile, but it never really went anywhere. There were a couple of sports I loved, but never got a whole lot of support for. It was hard. Nobody ever really noticed my own creative side, since my siblings and cousins also had a creative side. I haven't been feeling very noticed or appreciated for the past several years since they've all gotten older. And then I saw this episode. It kept me on the verge of tears the entire time. And then the ending was what got me. It helped me realize that, even though we're all growing up and getting out into the world, they may not say so but my siblings and cousins do love and appreciate me for what I have done. Where I am going in my life. And how I've helped them in the little ways I can. Honestly, I think this episode will stay with me for a LONG time.

hey dr wolf! I'm on a bit of a mlp reviews marathon right now and had to stop and comment on this. I am the middle of 3 girls. Recently, my younger sister and i had sat down and talked about our futures, i'm getting certified on medical billing and shes going for her degree in computer science. She showed me where she could be possibly interning for this summer and I told her what my grandmother had told me about medical billing, how it' always going to be needed, from dentist offices, to specialists. She said to me something that I always wanted to say "I'm going to be better then [my older sister]". sure we will both make more money, and I finally know what it's like to have all A's on my report card, but the idea of surpassing my sister is an added bonus. We had always been compared to her and it would aggravate us to the point of depression. Our one grandmother(different one then the one before) always talks about her and never talks about us. Now that we feel confident in doing something she can't, we feel better. With that being said, my older sister has paved an incredible path for us and I thank her for it.

While I at first found myself profoundly disturbed for the first moment of seeing Big mac acting COMPLETELY unexpectedly as this different ponysona, I gave it a moment to sink in by pausing the video and relaxing a bit. At first I was wildly confused, but now I am extremely grateful for watching this episode, while also having a giggle.
Simply put, It takes a lot of determination and integrity to stand up and being a brother or sister to your siblings. Big Mac is a Shining apple in the orchard for this, as he displays his love and appreciation for his sister Applebloom in this episode.
This even speaks to me at a personal level with my sister and step brother, and I definitely view this as a great episode. Very comical, informational, heart warming, and it just goes to show the dedication one's family member can have to make someone smile.

While I loved this episode, I can't help but feel it's kind of ironic that Applejack's the one getting all of the praise (regardless of how it was from her sister) since she's seen outside of the show as the most forgettable member of the Mane 6

I can't say I connect with the aspect of one sibling outshining another (we're both polar opposites when it comes to talents), but as an older brother to a younger sister.
What really hit home was the part when Big Mac told Apple Bloom that she used to look up to him when they were younger. As they got older, it appeared she didn't see him the way she used to, which is exactly how I feel now. My sister admits that I taught her more than just how to kick butt at video games, and because of that connection, the ending to "Brotherhooves Social" was downright brilliant and almost brought a tear to my eye. Well done, Mr. Polsky and nice review Doc.

I think Orchard Blossom was a great addition to this episode. In that role we got a nice hint to the little moment between him and Pinkie Pie in Pinkie Apple Pie where she said she never saw it that way, now we can realy see that he can express himself very well, also the part with the song was pure gold. While Applebloom was worried because it took Applejack so long Big Mac memorized the lines way faster, probably thanks to his experience in the Ponytones so a few subtle hints to continuity as well

I felt so much for Big mac this episode, especially at the beginning. I'm the oldest of ultimately four kids, but since two of my siblings are only half, and they lived with my dad, growing up it was mainly my little sister and me. My sis and I were insanely close when we were little; we did just about everything together, but when my dad came back into our lives so did my other siblings, and since they were closer in age to her, my sis started spending more time with them, and we started to drift apart. I felt like I lost my best friend, and I definitely empathize with big mac here. I'd do anything for my sister, and I wish we could be as close as we used to be.

I have to agree. I was waiting and hoping for a Big Mac episode since I read the IDW comic and since Granny Smith had a couple episodes surrounding her, he was the only Apple member left to do. This episode did not disappoint. We not only saw how determined, dedicated, - and let's face it - desperate he was to make his sister happy that it did wonders for his character. Not only that, but he's quite articulate isn't he? Sure he was playing a character, but I think this makes sense why he's so quiet most of the time. This sort of reminds me of me and my big brother. Unlike you, Dr. Wolf, I only have one sibling. He went on to be a doctor, so I guess I can relate to Big Mac as he's the "hero" of the family (not that my folks put us on pedestals or anything). While he does like to tease me and play mind games with my head (he was a valedictorian. They do that...), he is still one of the greatest brothers I could ever hope for. One time, he helped me scratch an item off my bucket list: Seeing a living Beatle live in concert! Sir Paul McCartney!!! This is a memory I will cherish forever. He likes the Beatles too, but I'm the die-hard fan of the family. The minute he saw he was coming to where he lived, he immediately got tickets and texted me to take the time off.
Sure, he drives me crazy and I drive him crazier, but I know that no matter what, he will always be there for me. There was a time after a bad breakup that I was scared I'd end up old and alone (I'm dramatic like that). He assured me if that if something happened to Mom and Dad and I was still alone, he'd let me live with him and my sister-in-law, no questions asked.
Sorry for the long winded bio, but I love sister-brother stories. I guess I can relate more to Twilight and Shining Armor more that Big Mac and his sisters, but the love is there nonetheless, even if we don't always "like" each other. ;)

This might be my favorite episode of season 5.
This is what I've been hoping for for so long, and it's something that Mr. Quill brought up awhile ago, saying that they usually focus on the bonds between sisters because this is a girls show but he said how little girls can have brothers too and I can't think of a better episode for that. Sure Twi has her BBBFF but I don't think Shining could carry himself through a whole episode of him and Twilight, there just isn't much to his character as far we've seen. But with Big Mac, I've always loved him and his personality has been expanded upon a lot as of late, like him being in a band or being sports buddies with Spike and other stuff too, but I had been hoping for an episode about him with either AJ or Applebloom and this one was just great. It wasn't perfect but no episode is and I don't think any other heart to heart talk has gotten through to me as much as Applebloom's and Big Mac.
It was a lot of fun to hear Big Mac talk some more and see how great a voice actor Mr. New is.

I consider this similar to Baby Cakes (i forgot my reason) but instead of cute babies torturing Pinkie with adorable schadenfreude, we had Drag Macintosh and cringe humor that just is knee slapping humor, and instead of ending on a note of crying to cute in 3 mins we had a beautiful moral that goes into tearjerker territory because we got to experience many of the emotions with Big Mac and Apple Bloom through the whole episode. And +DrWolf001 you mentioning appreciation of heroes at 4:55 makes think that this moral is an evolution of the moral from Princess Spike; of how anyone can make a difference to the solution, but this is closer to families. perhaps this season is going to show the moral of how each of us can all help to make great things even if we are not all together or do not have much time.
