Farmhouse doesn’t have to be trendy for people to still love it. People should stop following trends and think about what they love and what makes them happy. Life’s too short to worry about what others think.
I agree. Buy what you like but keep an eye towards timeless silhouettes and quality. One can’t afford to throw out multiple decor pieces every time the wheel turns!
I feel like I’ve never been able to fit in a particular category... I like traditional with modern and farmhouse touches and lately I’m loving vintage... I’m like all over the place 😁
Great video. Sadly I feel like the "modern farmhouse" is leaning more towards the boho trend. I will stick with my hardcore farmhouse style even if it is no longer trendy. Thanks for all the great info.
I have been more cottage farm house for my entire adult life, since so do live on an actual farm. I so miss Cottage Living Magazine. Beautiful antiques, rich woods, vintage linens, vintage dishes. Natural materials and nothing mass produced. It is such a comfortable lived-in look, and oddly everything works together.
Buy Country Living from England. My daughter bought an annual subscription for me. Wonderful. I reread them seasonally and randomly. Nothing new under the sun. English Heritage rules.
Yes! I too miss Cottage Living magazine. It was my favorite home magazine. And I do think that British decorating seems more authentic somehow. Fewer chains stores maybe?
Never really gone for trends , I just pick and choose bits I like from everything. I guess if you had to nail me down it would be Transitional Rustic Modern? I am a minimalist, love clean lines but am crazy for natural wood . I feel Navy blue and gold finishes need to stay in yachts and out of the kitchen, at least in my house. But people should just pick their own styles what fits their life
I feel like Mcgee is their own style and barely nods to farmhouse anymore. Is very preppy and i don’t think off farmhouse anything as preppy. It’s like, structured natural. Natural colors and materials, but with nice tight lines.
😳 I’m modern farmhouse?! Who knew? I live with what I love and don’t worry about what to call it. I like the ancient urn looks, but that comes from my art history side. I’ve been using baskets for over 25 yrs. I like a clean, uncluttered look.
Modern farmhouse is always for me…Love Joanna Gaines…the feel is cozy, …reminds me of home with my family and that I’m always home with hugs and kisses …Thank you for your prospective
Like you, I like some of the elements of the style combined with some traditional decor. I'm kind of an old soul so I like to combine older elements with some new looks mixed in.
Not a fan of modern farmhouse. 🙈 I watched half of the first season of fixer-upper and lost interest. 😁 I find ‘trends’ to be too easily replicated, and therefore the majority of homes {on IG and Pinterest} begin to look the same. I do think trends are helpful to begin learning how to put a home together cohesively. I love classic, traditional cottage style… my lake house leans more granny chic I suppose, my home in town more English cottage/colonial American with some country vices? I don’t like labels I guess 😉 I must have antiques and vintage, tho, with soft bits of color, always some black, and a neutral base.
I am old school, I have always loved light/sheer window coverings simply because they let the light in. I purchased 2 wine barrel chairs about 5 years ago (think gentle lines and arches, and very comfortable despite the wood). Everyone laughed when I put them in my living room, with a 1900s steamer trunk between them with a piece of lace over it, a plant and some quilting books...or they used to laugh. Lol. I love this look, I agree with your thoughts on the lighting, no modern lights!
Could you at some point discuss Traditional decor style? With farmhouse, modern farmhouse, mid century modern and bohemian style being so prevalent, I’m sort of at a loss as to what is considered Traditional.
Traditional is, basically, any style of decor before WW2. In reality there wasn't a clean break before and after the war, but it's a good rule of thumb. Part of it had to do with anger at Europeans after another world war, and the USA wanted to develop its own sense of identity instead of copying the styles of European kings and dictators. That's one big reason why we have more modern here than in Europe. The more modern European cities were generally also the ones that suffered the most damage during WW2.
Joanna Gaines’ style has also evolved more this direction. I love their new studio building with the natural wood cabinets. It feels so cozy and approachable. Studio McGee is very chic and balanced, but too modern for me.
I just found your channel! I'm recently widowed, just sold my farm, and am moving to a condo in a small city. The condo was built in '96 and still retains the sad ghost of 'golden oak for everything'. So, now I'm updating the interior and I've found I really don't know what I should do because I've don't rustic farmhouse for 18 years. Aaaaack! I'm so excited yet so daunted. Lots of decisions to be made and I'm happy to have found your channel. Very helpful and informative.
The nice thing about Farmhouse that I think makes it classic is that the essence is about utility. You can design farmhouse any direction but the key is how it functions. I think one of the culprits of why farmhouse “went out” is because it got out of control being too cluttered with cutesy. Hence why it has split into Cottage (where people like character and layers) and the modern streamline that makes it look less busy.
One way I found to get around the clutter and be more minimalist, is to not paint everything white. If you use a cozy color, you only need a few pieces. It's easy to keep clean and feels comfortable.
Love modern farmhouse! I think I've been gravitating this way for a long time, rustic, and mixing old and new. It's nice that it has a name and that it's gaining popularity.
Sarah you look beautiful in that dress!! Yes! LOVE Studio McGhee! I have been following them for a couple of years. I take the elements that I’m not in love with & put something that I do love in its place. I’m eclectic - always will be! ☺️
trends could go on for 10 years for me I don't go by that if I like it it's going to stay and if I don't it's going to go whether it's 10 years or not. love the way you style your house thank you for sharing
So glad you said all that you did! I am not into modern or contemporary or fads. I love timeless antiques, vintage and yes still cottage touches but not white. Intresting thst you said 10 yr trends.
Would you ever want to do a rustic primitive or Americana look one day on your tube? I would love to see those designs and what they have to offer someone. I love watching these videos they are really great at explaining the different styles and how they look in a home.
I think true farmhouse will endure for the many of us with rural roots (and I confess I live in the Waco area so Jo is still a thing here). Just as the '80's blue and mauve Welcome Friends geese look died, the kitchy faux Joanna too-wordy manufactured pretend farm goods will pass. Actual farm products and tools, natural fibers, and warm practical finishes in a simple style won't ever go out of style for us.
Hey Sarah, Thanks for the updates! I’m not a fan of the end tables, the chunky modern lighting over the peninsula, nor the subtle watercolor art work. I do love the splashes of black, the nice woodwork walls, and the rugs; I’m a farmhouse girl, but some of these new elements can be incorporated for an updated look. I would say def get rid of anything you don’t love for a cleaner look. Love your videos! 🙂
I’m really enjoying your channel, found you off Pinterest that led to your blog then to your you tube channel. ❤ The first farmhouse inspiration picture you put into this video was a mobile home! I’m a small “mobile home” channel with love for design, so I thought that was awesome! I’d say I’m into the modern farmhouse, modern organic style. Always tying to find that balance between old and new incorporating blacks, not too much or too little of decor… etc. Totally appreciate all your work to collect all this inspiration and making such wonderful videos. I will stay a fan of Farmhouse-not liking the modern , not yet at least. Sadly one thing about a trend is when it's over it's hard to find or more expensive. I do enjoy looking at other styles though. My home always had white walls. But hubs won this round when it was time to paint I gave in on a very soft tan on the walls. It's growing on me. My kitchen has been white for 22 years. I kept my hunter green for so long it almost came back into style. I think for me I like to rearrange things and collect vintage items. So it doesn't get boring. Chip and Jo will always be my favorite. I love your youtube page and always checkout updates from u. God bless u. :)
I'm not one for clutter and never got in to the full on farm house style. I mix and match all styles, if I love it I put in my house and it all blends seamlessly. Love watching you. You never disappoint!
Spot on in the timing of this video for me. I just took the quiz to discover my design style and sure enough, transitional came up for every room. Since I had never heard of this style, I had to google it. I am very drawn to the uncluttered look of this, but I don’t think I could achieve it in my home. I am a collector of things and I would have to hide it all behind cupboard doors. Big sigh….
I also love the traditional style with a touch of vintage farmhouse items. I don't like copper, brass or gold...just silver or black. Thanks for informing me about how to decorate my home for years to come!
This was a very helpful and interesting video. Thank you. My goal is to ensure my home and its contents/decor reflect who I am, what is important to me so that someone can walk in and look around and get a sense for the person that lives here. Rather than confine myself to a specific category, I like to blend various elements of form and function (such as farmhouse, modern technology and industrial), using natural elements to create a peaceful and joyful experience.
Thank you for this series! I've never been able to figure out what my design style is (and my house shows my lack of focus). This is definitely helping me narrow it down!! Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the info on the update trend in farmhouse decor. We recently moved in to a 1904 farmhouse and I live the character here! Interestingly enough I have mixed in a few things that lean towards the “new trend” but did so because I liked those pieces💕 Like you I am a traditionalist at heart. Just want to keep the feeling of this treasure of an old home true as well as functional. NO FARMHOUSE signs here LOL! Thanks again for another great video💕
I am enjoying the “modern farmhouse”. I’ve like that minimal look for the past 10 years. I basically like anything that looks like a shaker in this day and age would have designed and built. I also like to add touches of West Indies to this look- there’s something about them together that my eyes like
I love this look! I was feeling ready for farmhouse to move in a different direction, but not such a drastic move that we couldn’t keep up. I’m with you on the full-on contemporary look 👎🏻🚫😂.
I just love mixing and shaking it up if love a piece I make it my own thrifting is favorite way to find things love old things not one for clutter but I do like lot stuff I just can’t change that about me I try but it feels to empty love the tips
None of that looks like any kind of farmhouse, but it sure does look boho. I live in S/W Missouri and I can't even give a piece of black painted furniture away. We're all about super soft Interiors here and Joann's look is still red hot here, and I'm grateful for that. But, it is interesting to see what is trending in other areas.
Any tips on what to do if you love farmhouse design? I hear everyone saying it's out of style now, but I love farmhouse style - grew up on a farm, love antiques and anything farmy. Would love a video on just sticking with what you love!
I think knowing what you love is the majority of the battle. If you love farmhouse and what you've already put together in your home, then you're set! If you still feel the draw to update or change things out, I have a video about the differences between following trends and sticking with classics, and when to do each! That might help you: th-cam.com/video/ePQk3gvFtDw/w-d-xo.html
love this one! Would you do another on Granny chic Cottage core? I would say I am a blend of both Granny Chic and farmhouse if that is even a thing. Love your channel!
Sarah, you are so helpful and I love your style. I thrifted 2 slipper chairs from 1983 (flexsteel). They are lime green velvet and faded. I plan to reupholster or slip cover them in a linen type fabric What style would you consider them to fit in? Thanks!
They sound very traditional, but I would need to see a picture. The fabric choice could make the difference between exactly which traditional style they could be used in.
@@SheHoldsDearly thank you, I ended up buying canvas duck in natural, so they will be pretty casual. I'll try to remember to post a picture on be they are finished. I may also look for furniture legs that will make them a bit taller. I just love being a part of this group!
I live in a 1954, single level farm cottage with deep windowsills and hardwood floors. I think my style lands somewhere between American farmhouse and European cottage.
I know hard flooring is on trend with this look, but I definitely prefer carpet in the bedrooms. Any suggestions on carpet styles/colors to fit with modern farmhouse?
It’s actually a top from Walmart, it has been discontinued. But, you can find it on Ebay sometimes. I just found one in a small rstyle.me/+WYjSLJb_5L0Hyw5T9_aTPg Note : I removed the buttons on mine.
Lone Fox is a talented decorator. Check him out. Very fast paced speech as excitable. Also tips from House of Valentina. Can see you in the H & M belted fall coat in fawn from Valentina's haul.
I love the shaker style kitchen cabinets. I have that dated gold oak, arch type, cabinets. It isn’t feesable for me to replace the cabinets at this point. Any suggestions appreciated.
We do as well. We decided to embrace them. New black pulls. new tile floor that was handmade. We looked for awhile because we wanted that cottage look. We just added thin painted bead board backsplash. Used QUALITY paint. It is possible to work with them. Our kitchen looks amazing!
I really wish this style would be more referred to as rustic luxury. Simply because I rarely find a real farmhouse thats simplistic in style and architecture. But regardless, to be positive the vibe you’re trying to achieve should be authentic to you. That’s what’s important:)
What happened to the term, "eclectic"? ....That's me. I love bits of everything, but have always gravitated towards vintage items and antiques, (as long as it's not "musty" smelling. Lol.) ...Enjoy your channel!!!
I love your style more than McGee. Seems almost all the TH-camrs have a cookie cutter/Target esthetic. I live thrifting unique pieces ( vintage, antique, artisan, and sometimes coastal) Does that make my style eclectic?? Is there such a thing as eclectic traditional??
SS countertops are extremely expensive and look way too modern and commercial to me. But people do like them because they will stand up to corrosion and will resist the deleterious effects of food stains and meat juices, as well as, withstand the harsh cleaning products used in commercial kitchens.
@@SheHoldsDearly I just have one counter that needs replacing that's over the dishwasher. It was added in after we moved here. Part of the front has peeled and broken off and somebody put a hot pan down on the counter from the stove which melted part of the counter-top. It's about 28 x 28 1/2 inches square (without including the back splash,) so didn't know if would be good to replace it with stainless steel too as it is between the stainless steel sink and a stainless steel cookstove. That countertop was black, but the rest of the counter-tops are cream colored and are still in fairly good shape. The dishwasher is white, although hubby is thinking of getting a new one with a stainless steel front. He's been looking at a stainless steel microwave too and a stainless steel kitchen-aid mixer. He's gung-ho for the stainless steel look. 🤓
Thank you for your input. Always real. Wishing you warmth into Fall. Think turmeric favoured pumpkin soup. Getting so hot in Johannesburg. Parched for rain. Sending all love. Nigella Lawson does turmeric recipes. Enjoy. Watch Nicolas Fairford in Edinborough.
I always take away ideas even though I am not in a "style". In the 80's farmhouse, Victorian (like cottage) was the thing and I lived in an 1904 bungalow. Then in the 90's it seemed to be a mix and the type of house you live in. My now 50's house ranch low ceilings etc, screams modern-mix and so I put together what works. Hard to let go of some sentimental pieces so I guess my stye is clearly eclectic and I do my best to not be a theme (trend). I have MCM, Victorian and Swedish modern furniture and one piece from 1700s. So I try to use scale and accents to bring together and keep it from looking cluttered. Loved your mom's room you did for your church. It too was a mix and worked
I'm interested in your course, but can't find the link. Great video, I enjoy your style. I'm a mix of traditional, French country and farmhouse. Maybe that's why I need your course! 🤣

I am loving the clean look of modern farmhouse and currently transitioning from the more shabby/cottagy look of farmhouse. In my opinion, it gives your eyes some rest. Having said that, I don't see myself ever leaving the farmhouse style, whether modern or traditional, because it's just a classic, timeless look.
I am not a fan of farmhouse or modern farmhouse. I am still a primitive style decor fan. I like to be different and there is really not much on primitive decor out there. Would love for you to do a video on primitive. 😊
I love modern farmhouse. I love contemporary sofa with traditional side chairs. I helped my sister redo her living room with contemporary sofa, traditional chairs, modern table with traditional lamp, & a traditional end table with a modern lamp. And we removed every darn sign in the house. The whole family knows it's "HOME" & where the "LAUNDRY ROOM" is. I'm so over signs inside houses.
Off topic..When did Karate chopping the pillows become a fad? I can’t quite get into it. It makes me think my pillows have been walked across by my cat..
:'D Hahaha, Shara! There are debates across this idea all through the design community, you're not alone in disliking it. It's a pretty split decision.
I need help! I just moved into a beautiful home but the home is covered with honey oak wood trim and paneling. I actually don’t mind the wood (love to change the color), but changing is not within my budget, how do I work with it? Love to know if anybody would be willing to give me some tips and tricks on working with this style?
Hello Daniela! I have one on one consultations called Power Hours available! This is the sort of thing we could work through together that way. :) finding-time-to-hold-dearly.teachable.com/p/power-hour
Great video! Thank you so much! Love moden farmhouse and beginning to decorate a new home. I'm in the floor and wall stage and could use ideas on that if you have a referral source. Thanks for the plaid rug tip. Loved most if your loves and we dislike some of the same things. Dislike the gold and brass. Still prefer black and brushed nickle wood frames. Thanks again. So helpful!!!
Hi! This is one I did about a a year ago, and I'm excited to be working on some projects that will be leading to an updated tour once they're finished! th-cam.com/video/D3HlxnEWkFs/w-d-xo.html
I love modern farmhouse but lean toward the antique look. I also don’t like a lot of the ultra modern lighting and some of the furniture is a little to modern for me.
It's 2024 and we are building a modern farmhouse in rural Indiana. It is a life-style, not a "style". If it's running out of steam, whatever. We're still going to do farmhouse, lol. I was into "farmhouse" before Joanna Gaines was born. Just saying,
I love this video. I don't like some of the modern looks in farmhouse. I like the sofas, lamps and pictures. I don't like the chairs ,the frame part showing. I'm still stuck in Joanna Gaines era but I'm going to check out Sara McGee for sure
I kind of disagree about pegging Mcgee into modern farmhouse style. It's more like an approachable transitional. Lots of traditional and modern elements mixing but still manages to stay very warm.
I don't like any of it, except the European style ovens. 😂 To each their own. One thing that bothers me about all the white and the linens on the couches is having animals and dirty clothes in a real farm house. No matter how hard you try, someone or something will come in dirty.🤣
I’ve always loved the modern farm house. If you to any of the old school people that actually lived on a farm, white wouldn’t be their choice. With all the mud and gunk on a farm being brought in on boots, coats, and gloves white was the worse choice.
Farmhouse doesn’t have to be trendy for people to still love it. People should stop following trends and think about what they love and what makes them happy. Life’s too short to worry about what others think.
Absolutely agree.
I totally agree

Agree! I think she’s off when it comes to the queen of farmhouse … Joanna Gaines is still “in style” and will continue to evolve.

Yes I see lots of useless clutter in many videos. Cute nonetheless! Just useless and no use IMO

I love how farmhouse style can be so timeless!
Thank you so much for sharing your talent! You are my favorite!❤️
I’m so glad you said that about the black windows! I always cringe when I see Instagram accounts spray painting their window frames black.

I do like the modern farmhouse style but also do like the cozy cottage look.
Thank you for this series! I've never been able to figure out what my design style is (and my house shows my lack of focus). This is definitely helping me narrow it down!! Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️
You are so sweet!!☺️☺️
Thank you for all this precious videos!🤗🤗❤️
Thank you for the info on the update trend in farmhouse decor. We recently moved in to a 1904 farmhouse and I live the character here! Interestingly enough I have mixed in a few things that lean towards the “new trend” but did so because I liked those pieces💕 Like you I am a traditionalist at heart. Just want to keep the feeling of this treasure of an old home true as well as functional. NO FARMHOUSE signs here LOL!
Thanks again for another great video💕
Lol def no Farmhouse sign 😂
Agree! I think she's off when it comes to the queen
of farmhouse ... Joanna Gaines is still "in style" and
will continue to evolve.
Would you do a black roof?
No, I wouldn’t, for the same reason I wouldn’t purchase black windows. They last too long!😂
None of that looks like any kind of farmhouse, but it sure does look boho. I live in S/W Missouri and I can't even give a piece of black painted furniture away. We're all about super soft Interiors here and Joann's look is still red hot here, and I'm grateful for that. But, it is interesting to see what is trending in other areas.
So glad I found you!
This was a great video ! I’m all white modern farm. With little splashes of navy
love this one! Would you do another on Granny chic Cottage core? I would say I am a blend of both Granny Chic and farmhouse if that is even a thing. Love your channel!
Great video!
Farmhouse is still totally in.
The only thing that matters is what you, the homeowner, like. My modern farmhouse was built in 2018 and it needs a few updates, but overall I like it.
I love your style
I live in a 1954, single level farm cottage with deep windowsills and hardwood floors. I think my style lands somewhere between American farmhouse and European cottage.
I know hard flooring is on trend with this look, but I definitely prefer carpet in the bedrooms. Any suggestions on carpet styles/colors to fit with modern farmhouse?
Thank you for the video! Where is your dress from please?
It’s actually a top from Walmart, it has been discontinued. But, you can find it on Ebay sometimes. I just found one in a small

Note : I removed the buttons on mine.
Could you do an 'all about French/Victorian farmhouse' ? I often find Modern Farmhouse lovely but some touches are a bit too modern for me
Miss your old style of videos!
Just curious, where did you get background guitar music? 😆 I really like it!

Lone Fox is a talented decorator. Check him out. Very fast paced speech as excitable. Also tips from House of Valentina. Can see you in the H & M belted fall coat in fawn from Valentina's haul.
What do you think about whitewashed tile for the flooring? The tile looks like blackened raw wood that was whitewashed.
I would use it checkered maybe in one room, the most classic flooring is medium tone wood floors.
Agreed!
What happened to the term, "eclectic"? ....That's me. I love bits of everything, but have always gravitated towards vintage items and antiques, (as long as it's not "musty" smelling. Lol.) ...Enjoy your channel!!!
Eclectic is still around, for sure! :)
Hope you go back to these style of videos.
Yes, I ❤️
I would like to join your design class:)

I open again for new members in September! :)
I love your style more than McGee. Seems almost all the TH-camrs have a cookie cutter/Target esthetic. I live thrifting unique pieces ( vintage, antique, artisan, and sometimes coastal)
Does that make my style eclectic??
Is there such a thing as eclectic traditional??
What are the pros and cons of having stainless steel countertops?
I am sure we could all make a sculptural end table with cement/concrete mix. Auctions however have real tables with drawers.
I'd love to have you join us! Here's the wait list link! We'll be open for registration (at this same link) on Wednesday of this week: finding-time-to-hold-dearly.teachable.com/p/behind-the-scenes
I hope we’re moving far far away from all the sign decor I.e. ‘eat’ ‘live, love pray.’ Too much is sometimes too much.
My husband does NOT understand all the word sign decor...AT ALL. 😄

I have Power Hours available if you'd like to plan a consultation with me!

Can you do a tour of your house? Thanks
Hi! This is one I did about a a year ago, and I'm excited to be working on some projects that will be leading to an updated tour once they're finished! th-cam.com/video/D3HlxnEWkFs/w-d-xo.html
I love Studio Mcgee style ~ much better than Joanna Gaines look.
I think you'll really like Shea McGee! :)
@@SheHoldsDearly lolol..after I wrote Sara and posted my comment I thought..that's not even her name...lol. thanks
No matter how hard you try, someone or something will come in dirty.🤣
my old ears can't take the music background - sorry
sheholdsdearly.com/all-about-modern-farmhouse/ - You might appreciate the written version! :)
@@SheHoldsDearly how sweet - love watching you but as we age, the ears start to go :)
We a 1910 Edwardian home. My decorating style is vintage French cottage with beige, warm white and spa blue hues. Not a fan of modern.
I’ve always loved the modern farm house. If you to any of the old school people that actually lived on a farm, white wouldn’t be their choice. With all the mud and gunk on a farm being brought in on boots, coats, and gloves white was the worse choice.
