I will say that I disagree with many of you points so instead of just leaving a comment. I will make a video rebutting some of you points. I probably will use parts of this video if that’s okay with you.
I feel like the only way for SOME of theses issues to be fixed is through the anime. I hope that when the anime adapts the later parts of the story, bones is able to change some of the plot. Not by much, but make it better than what we got in the manga. Or even better they can add in some filler episodes to add on to the story and add in new plot points that weren't in the manga.
The fact that this entire series takes in place in one year of the students school highlights how badly Horikoshi paces the story. By now, Class A should be seniors and it would show that they're finally ready to become heroes. Instead of freshman who just keep getting lucky or sporadically power boosted
Bruh what? In universe it’s been nearly three years sense the start of MHA. Izuku and Bakugo start the serious off in their last year of middle school and are stated to be 14 year olds. Currently Izuku is 16 going on 17 while Bakugo is 17.
Seconded. The story should be paced like Harry Potter - we see the characters grow physically, mentally, and emotionally with each year, culminating in the final school year being the final arc. Had Hori went with this route, it would utterly avert the need for a timeskip because we see 1A and 1B grow. Instead, he wrote himself into a corner by making 1A being the entire center and having arcs resolved very rapidly while not giving us not much time to feel the aftermath.
I think the largest problem the show and maybe even shonen at large is their inability to go through with serious consequence and that just gets worse as mha continues. Once u start bringing dead characters back it’s the point of no return
That’s what I’m thinking too. I always think back to Full metal alchemist whenever I see this happened. Nina happened at the very start of that series. (All versions/manga) Same with the failed attempt to revive their mother. Both are traumatic events that stick with the characters. When the brothers comment about not being able to save even a little girl. Literally months after it would of happened. You feel the impact that had on them. When Al questions his reality, you feel Ed anger as we know what he went through to save Al. Hell the title “‘full metal” alchemist’ is literally titled after the title (take a shot when I type title) Ed gets since he lost limbs at the start and got metal prosthetics. There much more that happens and continues to impact the plot later one. The rebellion you see in the first few episodes come back towards the end. But there aren’t many shows I can think of that do this as well. Avatar the last air bender is the only other one I can think of. Both build up to a perfect conclusion imo.
Exactly. I honestly think Bleach was ahead of it’s time, since people actually stayed dead and there was consequences that actually occurred in the series. If C46 actually did something about Kikyo’s death, Tosen never would’ve rebelled. If Yamamoto actually killed Yhwach during the first war, he never would’ve came back. Hell, the Hell arc is a perfect example. The Shinigami has sent people down to Hell repeatedly, and without Aizen and Yhwach, the balance of the universe is now beginning to collapse.

I was kinda hoping we'd get Class 1A going from Year 1 students all the way to Year 3, mastering their powers and getting a lot of character growth and development while the villains slowly attain power and become a legitmate threat, and just take out the pro heroes slowly while the students improve. Certainly would've made the final battle more interesting with everyone at their peak against the villains at their peak with the stakes escalated with almost all the pro heroes getting killed or taken out.
@@dragoncat5767 I don't think this is fans and more executives breathing on creators necks to produce stuff without any pause and trying to follow an already made path, what makes any creative work sucks by a lot, and let's not forget the magakas have zero control on their stories many times being telled to change characters because "X is more popular than Y" and like the structure of MHA feels incredible artificial and paint by the numbers, and I doubt this isn't a sigh of the creator being too tired to even think what he should do next so they just copy what already worked from other series, these stories should have a pause of at least some months so the creator can recharge not only physically but mentally and have new experiences they can put in their stories.
I mean I think even the timing of the war would have been fine if we gave it some room to breathe, and gave the students time to finish the school, it would narritively satisfy the idea that the old system is failing ang only those who fully became heroes in the darkest hour can fix it
By the way, I cannot BELIEVE we skipped over the students reaction and “recovery period” after the war arc. We NEEDED to have a bit of time with the students together or something. Or hell! Midnights funeral! God damn man.
Oh yeah, my biggest issue with bnha is the fact how they put aside traumas and such, like with everything that happened I'm surprised that no one got therapy or dropped 1-A after feeling the danger for real.
It confuses me how so many people will complain about the license exam arc cause "why do we care about these story details when there is a clear and present villain threat" basically asking for a time skip and then they actually go through with a short time skip and just as many people complain that the story details everyone bitched about wasting time with are now being skipped over. I think the story and pacing are doing just fine. I think too many people have been complaining about every narrative choice MHA makes or could have made and that no matter what choices they make they are going to get a vocal backlash for it. Tempering my expectations for the story with that knowledge has let me enjoy the story for what and why it is.

No one's gonna mention the one-shot he made before MHA? It's basically the same premise (no-quirk guy wants to be a hero in a hero society), but the main character never gets a quirk. He works together with others to be just as useful as other people in society and its a really touching and fun story that highlights how disability makes you no less ambitious and no less of a person. I feel like MHA held this theme early on and came close to expanding on it, but lost its way and became a generic super-hero comic.
I kinda feel weirded out when I first started this series, Deku is part of this oppressed group that get get bullied cuz they're different and I thought the series was gonna go for one of those "don't need powers to be a hero" stories but he gets one and the whole quirkless thing with the show just...evaporates? Like the quirkless still exist but the whole shtick is just brushed under the rug. I hated it cuz it enforces the fact that the quirkless really can't be anything without a power message that was drilled to Deku but then later the show does a 180 when it showed that support items could out right beat quirks during the tournament arc. There's also the fact that most in Class-A students are pretty much under-leveled compared to Deku cuz if they wanted to make him an underdog guy who needs to catch up to his peers with his given power, they should've made his classmates be prodigies who leaves him in the dust, cuz not even a few chapters later he already dogpiles lot of them despite just receiving his quirk that it didn't even look like a challenge for him.
What I hate is Deku is just like All Might. He ignores the Depressed and Suicidal. There was a Deadpool comic where he rescues a Girl from committing suicide and it was really good. Couldn’t even have Deku meet a Quirkless. He faced Real discrimination and yet when he got Power. He abandoned his fellow men and woman. He knows how hard it is for Quirkless Kids yet because he has a Quirk and is a Superhero he forgets about them and let’s them wallows in Depression and Suicide and dosent care. And thus he can’t Ever be a Superhero because he actively ignores the most Suicidal.
@@devildolphin2102 Tbh, All might was kind of a douche when he told Deku he can't be a hero(despite good intentions). For one he himself was quirkless and likely knew the discrimination Deku faces and how damaging it is to say to a kid who obviously worships you. The there is also the fact that All-Might could actually help him since we have been shown in the show, support items can beat quirks in this world, and who is All-Might connected to? The Shields...so yeah both of Deku and All-Might sucked and reinforced the belief that having no power means you are useless.

And I think it showcases Horikoshi weakness. He can’t let Characters suffer for their actions. They will always get a get out of Jail free card and Will never face consequences.
I wish Horikoshi, after AM lost his quirk, had the power to just say “f%#$ it, I’m taking a few months off to rest and plan the rest of the series, see you all next year.” Would probably have helped a bunch with the pacing and overall structure.
Pulling a HxH a few years ago would've been the move. I know most people would complain about it but I genuinely think the end of the war arc should've been when he went on hiatus to get recuperated.
There was a solution to the All For One problem that was so obvious that it immediately raised red flags to me when the story didn't do it at Tartaros: Shigaraki killing All For One. Were this to happen, it certainly wouldn't solve every problem, but it would provide a semi-coherent compromise between maintaining the element of All For One not wanting to give up his place in the world and letting Shiggy maintain his agency. Had this happened, several important things would have been different: 1. All For One's relationship with Shiggy would have been strategically made parallel to All Might and Deku's. While All Might accepted that his time was past and worked to let Deku take on the mantle, All For One held on past his prime for so long that it killed him. Shiggy exacts his agency and kills his master, completing his journey to becoming the series big bad. 2. Saving Tenko is neither predicated on beating up All For One nor the only possible end. It's suddenly up in the air whether that could happen at all, and if Deku does decide to do it, it becomes a lot more complex of a problem to solve. It would have to involve confronting the inherent issues with the hero system and society at large now that the BBEG is not around to be the scapegoat anymore. 3. The League's character traits continue to be front and center. Spinner, Dabi, and Toga have more or less been sidelined since All For One reentered the story, so giving them real character motivations for the last two arcs would have been a lot easier. Not only that, but Shigaraki would have had to deal with the fallout of each of them having different goals and the consequences of letting his companions do whatever they want. 4. As the UA traitor, Aoyama's position becomes a lot more complicated. All For One is no longer hanging over him, so now the only thing keeping him from telling his secret is his own conscience. This would make his role in the story more personal and satisfying. This act wouldn't solve the problems with pacing and Deku's characterization, but it would make the stakes of the final war a lot more interesting, to the point where I was shocked when it didn't happen and genuinely believed it still would until recently.
This is exactly right, and it would make the traitor arc all the more fitting as well. The traitor story vanished because, Aoyama had nobody to report to. He was a spy without a handler; only held down by his own shame.
@@downix I’m personally sad we never got a Kurogiri reunion with Shiggy and AFO, yeah he’s compromised after the reveal that he’s Oboro and Aizawa’s old friend but we still knew him as Kurogiri long before he was revealed to be Oboro so it kind of sucks we didn’t get that reunion in Tartarus. Even if it’s to ditch him since he’s compromised.
I'd freaking Loved that Idea!! If Shigaraki broke into Tartarus , gathers up the escape prisoners into his and meets his Sensei one last time before dusting him with Decay. AFO’s final moments being laughing insanity knowing he’s created a true Demon Lord with nothing holding him back anymore. This Shigaraki growth parallels with Deku’s growth with their powers reaching new levels but now they both have to start over in a new playing field.
You could even have all for one as threat around via his quirk and talking to him and whispering to him. But one less body to take care of and challeng for shigaraki, that it truely could e a battle of wills going one, not afo taking over. And the ones dont accepting shiggy and the ones who do and ensuring chaos could even e a reason to strik fast. as long as he isnt solidified.
I do agree that they really glossed over details in the villain hunt. Like we never even got real reactions from Enji on what his thoughts were with OFA. He's just moved past and works to help Izuku.
I feel as if it would have added nothing to his character. By the time OFA is revealed, endeavor was already over his obsession with All Might and power.
@@mangamandrew true. But the bigger one skipped is the downward spiral and exhaustion Izuku burns himself into. Let alone the other heroes. Like we see him taking down Muscular, but he looked tired before then.
@@jfb173jb It’s not that it was skipped. We see the spiral and it was fast. A downward spiral is not always slow. And for a character like Deku, the spiral can’t be slow. When he took down Muscular, he was not really tiered. That was the start of him leaving Japan. And the other heroes are exhausted but Deku pushed past his exhaustion and that was the issue.

I won’t say the writing in MHA is the best; their are faults but I don’t think that the stuff with Deku is bad writing.

@@Dragonds53 true. All Might was taking like he was planning on killing All For One in their fight. Endeavor easily switched from prioritizing capturing to just killing the Nomu. The entire operation of a Paranormal Front war being to make sure Shigaraki stays dead. Etc. It seems like it's pretty accepted when you just have to kill certain people. Deku and Ochaco seem to be the only ones that have emphasis on not killing villians.
Same. I also hate how Hawks didn't get any sort of backlash for basically murdering an individual in cold blood. Like yeah, sure, Twice is a villain, but he's still a human being who needed help. There also isn't any law that stated heroes are allowed to kill in their universe. And Hawks is the No. 2 Hero and a famous public figure- I figured we'd get to see more mixed reactions from the public about him killing someone, particularly from the UA students.
Wow, after you pointed out how basically every chapter now is just a setup for another “epic moment” cliffhanger it’s impossible to unsee. Every. Single. Chapter. Is like this now. Also, the artstyle has become an undistinguished mess of shapes and faces, where there is no way of telling what is even happening.
This part is a huge aspect for me. Half of the time I just don’t even understand what is happening with shigaraki and his body parts lol. I just scroll through and hope someone will narrate it and I’ll get it
i get the feeling this is shounen jump's fault once again, rushing their artists to pump out something "safe" rather than experimental, at least thats what happened when we saw promised neverland. its kind of unrealistic for someone to continuously update a story on a constant basis with no break, hence hxh togashi takes years long breaks
Deku's power development also peaked way too fast. Watching Deku slowly progressing through the percentages of one for all was a long but to be-satisfying journey. We all hoped to see him reach 100% with no repercussion, and that painted to be a part of the story that would take inside-years to master, and when he would finally get there, it would seem earned, both to Deku and to us by sticking all the way from 5 to 8 to 20 to 35. During the first war when it was mentioned that Deku could use 35% and 45% at impact, it was a sign that the heroes wouldn't win the war but that also meant that we would've been in a while new ride with Deku until he gets to 100%, and little by little, the story of One for all would be fully revealed to Deku, giving him more mentality for battling. But when fighting Lady Nagant, fa Jin came in and threw that out the window. It's a cool fight, sure, but fa Jin making Deku on par with all might already with faux 100% makes the journey underwhelming. We spent hundreds of chapters watching Deku increase his percentages and got excited when he did because it meant something special for him and for us. Having that suddenly replaced with something that has "faux" in the name is disappointing. It's also frustrating that, fajin could've worked as a bonus for Deku, but that's the thing, a bonus, something for when after he's reached 100% It's not an abismal problem, but it was something that made the series what it was.
Yeah I think speed is the problem. Of course Deku flexible the OFA muscle at higher numbers would strengthen that muscle. 5 to 45 makes sense given the events that pass, but not the time frame.
Kind of disagree? Fa Jin allowing Deku to do a fake 100% is pretty on point and in line with the rest of Deku's moves. Before he could control the % he would instead sacrifice fingers and limbs for "one time" (until healed, like how a gun needs to be reloaded) powerful shots- and when he did control his % he gradually stretched the muscle of OFA and proceeded to develop techniques based around the strengths and weaknesses such as using a lower % for attacks but increasing it far more just before impact- Fa Jin, while suffers from the same issue as all the past OFA users's quirks do (introduced too quick, not enough practise shown, etc), is still very much in line with the story and Deku's mindset. He didn't have full control over it and instead applied it in an intelligent way (he basically had two boosts, one for each leg. One to leap at Nagant and another to blast forwards while using the whips to change his trajectory) and just like his early application of OFA it was limited (instead of fingers however he was limited to his legs and would need to remain static for a prolonged amount of time to recharge.)
Nobody complains about Mary sure male characters, they only get more respect because males are supposed to be strong. Females are supposed to be weak so any power they have that isn't long drawn out and realistically developed will be scrutinized regardless.
The fact that deku's arms were able to get adjusted to the strain from one for all really annoyed me. I thought horokoshi was going to follow through with deku not being able to use his arms anymore and would have to learn to use blackwhip to move his arms.
What? That's how One For All works. His body gets more used to it as he gets stronger, we're told this from the very beginning and it's why he had to train for like 10 months before getting the quirk.
@@willycheez7218 ...No, we're told that he had to do that so that his limbs wouldn't fall off when he used One For All. It's been made clear through the whole series that Midoriya would lose his arms if he kept pushing his limits and that didn't happen. It's not "how One For All works" that's just how it works for All Might since he's an Anomaly.
What I feel with MHA now is the same feeling I felt with Tokyo Revengers. Nothing. I don't get excited for new chapters anymore, I don't care about these characters. It's just not fun to read anymore, man.

Fr, I wait for like 10 chapters before reading either. Tokyo revengers really messed up the whole thing with continuing the last arc.. ending before it was so nice and bittersweet.
I personally dropped MHA after season 2 and I could not be happier. I am so glad I didn't get attached to Shigaraki because I would've been devastated to see that they just wrote him out of the story after he peaked
This reminds me of how I felt when Naruto’s quality started to decrease towards its end. It’s sad that MHA is doing the same and that Horikoshi just wants out when he finally made my hero’s world feel big. Wish he got a 3 month break like Tabata.

I'll never forget that one scene where Jiro got with all the others from the School Festival band, said something about bringing everyone together, and it's just....never followed up on. Would've been a brilliant catalyst for the Aoyama reveal too.
MHA’s problem is that it is rushing the War Arc consistently, with characters changing their minds on a dime (like Deku and his “lone wolf” idiocy), constant battles that fail to be impactful because they’re lined up one after the other with no proper intermissions of development or interactions between, and no given reasons as to why first year high school students are the ones making the biggest battles against the League of Villains. AFO long overstaying his welcome and becoming like a vestige is also a serious swing-and-a-miss. OFA having vestiges makes sense because it is a stockpiling quirk. All For One, on the other hand, was simply (somehow copied, which is also never explained) into Shigaraki and somehow this allows AFO to hijack Shigaraki’s body? It makes no sense, really, and it kinda destroys the impact of Shigaraki’s character development over the course of the series. All of the moments of his growth and his direct parallels with Deku are now mulch since AFO is once again returning for a tired and exhausting story of how he’s just evil because he likes it and how he’s totally gonna get OFA this time. All of this, of course, with no emotional development or character connections to AFO as a character, or even a more involved backstory for him. Legitimately the only way I can see this decision making sense is if AFO really IS Deku’s dad. And it would kinda be a sham revelation if they pulled that card so late in the game, too. This series became the new Naruto Shippuden wayyyy too quick.
I don't like shiggy, not even they way we are supposed to dislike shiggy. I always hoped it would be AFO vs deku. Also lone deku was some of the best stuff in the story.
@@gaeron1305 How was Lone Deku a good plot? It just shows how much Deku hasn’t grow since the beginning, always recklessly running into problems without any thought and arrogantly (albeit unintentionally) thinking that he alone can solve the world’s problems and that such things are too dangerous for his classmates. By now, Deku should know that his classmates are formidable and are growing just like he is. He should know that abandoning them would mean nothing, because AFO could’ve just targeted them anyway because Deku would be too heroic to not run to save them immediately. Also, how would going it alone against a city and country full of escaped and empowered villains make Deku or anyone else any safer? He was legit endangering OFA by doing so, as he could’ve easily been killed when he was wandering the streets alone and without any backup. Narratively, it makes no sense. It showed no growth in Deku’s character, it ended far too quickly and without much lasting effects to have any impact on the story, and Deku didn’t even lose anything from it (which might have justified it for teaching him a lesson). Overall, it was a lazy attempt to satisfy those who love those Vigilante Deku fanfictions online. And, in a story where most of the other characters are either given zero individual or personal storylines and very little depth at all, it gave Deku’s classmates and teachers literally nothing to do in the story as he ran around playing hero. And it showed Deku’s greatest flaw in an unrestrained and obnoxious way: his selfishly selfless belief that he should protect everyone alone and that he needs to protect even his fellow heroes. That whole arc, after the series having already shown how All Might made those mistakes and indirectly caused all of this by doing so, only showcased Horikoshi’s lack of creativity and his lack of continuity. And it succeeded in showing just how little Deku’s mistakes and trials throughout the series have actually helped him to grow.
Probably the biggest flaw the author could have and did make was with the pacing. The story unfolding in just one year? Please, like someone else in the comments already mentioned, class A should have been 3rd years at this point in the story. Making the finaly battle some sort of a final test, showing everyone that these teenagers are infact ready to become fully fledged heros As for Allmight? Leave him as he is, having to come to terms with the fact that he will never be the single symbol of peace and having to rely on others was a smart move. Having Eri rewinding his body wouldnt really change much if I'm honest. Sure, he'd be stronger with his muscular body, but still only human. Especially without OFA flowing through him All in all, let's just see where the author is taking the story. The past can't be changed, after all Sure, he'd still be quirkless, but
Yeah the Final chapter was out and…Yeah Horokoshi and the story just can’t recover from that ending. No matter how people try to make sense of it, that ending is just…depressing
51:08 I get the sense that Horikoshi never fully thought through just how insane Overhaul (the Quirk) is. We have a Quirk that could be used to perform miraculous healing, create new species, and build entire cities in the blink of an eye. Overhaul should have been able to bring the Yakuza back single-handedly (hah), ruling over a criminal empire that rivals AFO’s with, or without, Eri.
I mean for Overhaul we only see him use it for reassembling eri, instant kill magne/minions, bringing back his arm, fusing with people and controlling to some extent the terrain. Overhaul was singularly focused on raising the Shie Hassaikai and not caring for the organization that he wouldn't have gotten far regardless of his power.
Many shows and series end up overstaying their welcome but MHA is the opposite. It's so determined to end that it's dropped so far in quality. Many of us probably would have loved to have seen several more years and see these characters grow up and evolve further. AFO is a big factor in this. Seems that the story has no idea how to continue after him which is sad really. Almost like they can't justify going more powerful than him
what annoys me is that like this could have become the next longstanding flagship series for shounen jump. Like imo the way this story is and how like intricate it could be is that this could have been a next one piece although I dont see it going on for as long as One Piece has been/will go but like it had the potential to be especially with introducing the world outside of Japan. Like I saw an article about how Shounen Jump will never have a a series like One Piece ever again and like I sort of agree with series that could come close either getting cancelled or in this case the suthor seeming to want to move on.
40:50 for this specifically, in the fight against Star and Stripe it switches between AFO and Tomura speaking several times. IIRC at the start of the new fight where the Hero's teleport Tomura's body away, it also momentarily switches between AFO and Tomura but it is mostly AFO in control. These things are not conveyed clearly in English, unfortunately.
Huh, neat. Other than that the only thing that really stuck out to me about their fusion was after his defeat, how AFO pointed out that his personal dislike of All Might mixed with Shigaraki's overall intense hatred as he uh, continuously seethed on the floor. Still find it neat, but it's kinda weird that at this point it's hard to get a total grasp on the main villain since stitching two characters together ironically makes you understand the end result less. Wait now that I'm thinking about it, did he even point that out? Hmm, I remember him talking about how much he hates All Might at least, but, well, I guess that's there either way?
i want to say, that AFO turning out to be a stereotypical villain and was planning to posses shigaraki, was the worst move possible. i adored the idea that AFO had, over the course of his career, decided that he just diddnt have the drive to keep up his battle with OFA, that he hit his limit, and he was inevitably going to lose, just like every single villain in every single story. so why not try and take a page from those books? went out, found a successor of equal if not greater potential and will, and decided to build him up and hand him his power when he was ready for it, make them the new demon king, who will inevitably slay the hero that he has struggled against for so long. the villainous application of the old hero mentoring the successor, the passing of the torch. it was a legendary idea, and had so many genuinely interesting questions that we would have to ask about such a contradictory character. and he pissed it all away. i don;t know why, but he did. that is a cold hard fact.
What an eye-opening video. Watching Shonen N' Chill week to week ever since the villain hunt, I see how yours, mine, and the community opinion as a whole was and is shaped by the reaction to individual chapters. How short run issues pile up in the long run, while hype moments fade and are forgotten. That's why the majority of the audience who reads the story just for the hype still loves it BECAUSE of the hype, which Hori now specifically made his target. This video made me more critical and worried for the future. To think that I'll soon be finishing MHA with "ugh, finally" rather than this the feeling that the journey has reached its destination, it just makes me sad.
With what I’ve been hearing about BNHA, these all really feel like symptoms from Horikoshi being pushed to finish the manga. This was touched on in several interviews with him wanting to end BNHA, because he’s been getting pressured to. Pressure from fans, critics, likely from his publishers and editors too. I really think Horikoshi wanted to take his time with it, Hori clearly loves BNHA and is really passionate about his story, but deadlines are deadlines. And I think that’s ultimately the saddest thing about this.
I know your comment is a bit old by now, but I kinda doubt that. When a series gets axed, you can quite feel that; everything feels suddenly rushed and weird choices were made in that recent (final) arc. As for BnHA, you can feel the motivation in writing lacking overtime. More, as stated in the video too, like moving from cool moment to cool moment instead of actually developing these moments and its characters within it. I personally feel like Horikoshi kinda got burned out by the story of BnHA and wants to wrap it up in a decent way.

I 100% agree with everything said in this video. MHA got me back into anime after a period of not watching anything. I've been keeping up with this series week to week for a couple years now and it will always have a special place in my heart. The dip in quality the past 2 years has sucked, but don't think that will taint the enjoyment I've had with this series all these years.

I don’t like or want to give into the decline BNHA has had despite agreeing with admittedly a lot of the video’s points above, but I still will like BNHA for what it did introduce. You couldn't have said it better! The selling point for this anime in 2016 was the premise that although they live in a super powered society, there were people striving to become their best selves(Deku). The whole point of this was to show the struggles of the human heart in situations that normal humans don't go through. What is it like being super powerful and disconnected of your human emotions? What is it like being powerful and feeling empty/inferior? I can't stress this enough: audiences are not interested in a super powerful being with no internal struggle. For example: One punch man (season 1 at least). He completely obliterates his enemies, but at what cost? HIs hair? His emotions? The thrills of battle? When Deku gets his new powers, it feels like he has new found responsabilities. Learning them without destroying his body, as it had been established previously. At one point he is shattering his bones and in the next: HAHA I CAN MOVE AT 100% 'CAUSE I'M EMO NOW. What???? It was just so he could be leveled up? that's annoyind as heeeell. Deku no longer cares if he hurts his mother or not by destroying himself. (and then he can fight without repercussions). HIs relationship with all might is forgotten, he doesn't need to learn nothing more. His friends are side characters that don't matter shit in the protagonists life. No fight has consequences, not even Eraser Heads sacrifice (his leg) means enything, cause it is all SKIPPED so we can see omnipotent figures fighting. I dropped the manga when they threw in a super powerful american hero who DIED FOR NOTHING.
What really makes sad about all of this is that we get a huge reveal centered around Hawks, who quickly became a very important character to the series, and its literally just one line. Then afo brought it up in one line only recently. Like, you're telling me Hawks has probably killed around the same amount of people as dabi and we're NOT going to talk about it? For real? Okay. It's just really disappointing especially since he's my favorite character and everything else about him is so well written but this is just dropped in there and never explored again.
I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. The Paranormal War Arc especially felt like it would be a turning point. For the Heroes, for society and especially for the Villains. I always felt that it should've been followed up by something much longer, that really dives into how broken Japan is right now. How the Heroes are coping with this new world where everyone doubts them. If what happened during the war was a step too far for some Villains, like Spinner or perhaps even Toga, and not at all what they had envisioned when they joined the League and they realize it's worsening the problems they hoped to solve by joining. But then nope, we watch Deku run around for a bit and not getting anywhere because quintessential "friendship is great" shonen thing, Aoyama is the traitor, AFO and Dabi magically corrupt everyone so there's no more moral ambiguity, now on to the final fight! I will never like the Villain Hunt Arc, but if it was perhaps followed up by another few arcs that let us stew in the new status quo for a bit and wrap up all the emotional plotlines before getting to the big final fight, it certainly would've been more tolerable. I really think Horikoshi is just burned out and just wants to get it done. Especially Bakugo's death really feels like an author deliberately self-sabotaging because he just wants to be rid of the series.
@@makoaatlas4782 I know, right? I mean, if you are going to kill off one of your leads, commit to it; go Kamina or go home. Don't use it as a cheap two-week shock only to then immediately undo it. I personally think the only way they could still make it work is 1. Edgeshot fails; Bakugo stays dead, 2. Bakugo is revived, but way too late to still make a difference or 3. We'd get an entire arc where Bakugo has to deal with the trauma of what he went through and the fact Edgeshot died for him to be revived. And let's be honest, Horikoshi isn't going to do any of those.

MHA was a real iccuras moment. it just needed more time to develop everything, characters, themes, arcs, plot all of it. the worst of it all is that it really felt like it was all going somewhere but now it's official it's going to end this year. But man a lot of MAH is still so good. it's gonna turn into a naruto now. It's legacy being defined by how it ended, not how it got there.
What I liked about MHA at the beginning was how One For All had its limits and Deku was seriously injured when using it, the scenes where he had to plan to use or not the OFA in some ways were great and with good tension because i didn't know if Izuku could outsmart the problems or take the risk and end up in a serious state that affects his next mission, but he went from being vulnerable to almost invincible, and worse that his improvements are off-panel, it lost the satisfaction of how he tried so hard but despite everything was not enough
just imagine if we thought dekus arm was fine the whole arc until he was confronted by class 1A and when he took his suit off he did not have an arm the whole time. He was using black whip and covered it with his suit. I feel like that would have made things more interesting and he could have some cool attacks
Thank you for so eloquently putting in words every single critique I have made about this manga/anime when MHA fans ask me why I don’t really care for this anime/manga in any sense and become insulted when I tell them I’m only keeping up with it out of curiosity where and how it will end. I’m legitimately curious if it will make any impact or if it will end in a cookie cutter way and fizzle out of existence.
Yeah. I was an avid reader until the TOURNAMENT ARC but everything fell out. It's not even about heroes anymore. It's like a constant cat and mouse chase.

I feel like the students fought each other more than they fought the villains lmao and it seems like this series wants desperately to prove the villains point about talking their way out of everything and not really solving any of their society’s issues. It’s super boring and you can’t even enjoy the action cause it’s always interrupted by some kind of flashback or talk no jutsu.
My interest in MHA gradually dropped the moment Overhaul got written out of the story at the end of his arc. In my opinion, Overhaul is the best antagonist introduced in the series and brought up to the surface very interesting questions regarding the world and quirk : the fact that quirk were a recent apparition and whether it's a genetic degeneracy or not, if quirk are a good thing or not in the first place, etc. Overhaul felt like so interesting because his point of view, that quirk were inherently a problem and had to be fixed, was valid and could be interpreted as right. However, after being defeated, Horikoshi decided to have Shigaraki litterally shit on Overhaul for no reason other to remind us that he was the main antagonist as well as never bringing up those questions once more regarding quirks. And I've always interpeted that as Horikoshi having blown his load regarding the deepest part of the world building he could've explored as well as having introduced a more nuanced villain that Shigaraki. Because of that, I never had this moment again in the series where my expectation and understanding of the world was challenged and it came back to the fairly black and white concept of villain versus hero dichotomy. After that, I just fell off gradually until I stopped around Endeavor fighting the Nomu.
this was an incredible video. As a longtime fan of MHA, I agreed fullheartedly with so many of your points. I was there, live, when Dabi's Dance came out, and I also remember vividly how the manga lost all that adrenaline and hype right after. I wish they lingered more on the recovery arc/saving deku. MHA, at its core, is also partially a slice of life, and ever since deku went vigilante that element has been missing more than ever. The whole class have been so separated/isolated, and that just doesn't work for the story. They should've had more time to comfort each other and talk things out. Besides that, there are also a lot of ideas that got abandoned when Deku just magically started gaining quirks. Obviously, you mentioned that he lost all possible consequences for overworking/going too far. But, I also think that at the start the story was very much about learning to rely on people. All Might stepping down after kamino hit hard because he was the one and only symbol of peace. I really thought the manga would go for the "one for all" theme and show the strength in unity, have all the students work together to make up for deku's flaws, but no - he just?? copies their moves?? with his new quirks?? it downplays his classmates so disgustingly and urgh it's horrible the traitor arc, too, I have no idea what happened with that? there were some really good theories out there about the potential traitor, but then in the story it just comes up once and is immediately??? idk??? Also, when Katsuki dies, everyone predicts right away that he wouldn't really die, but I actually legit thought his fake death would at least have more impact. Even though he was dead for a long time irl, in the story it's like. not even a day. I though, okay, they won't have time for midnight's funeral, but maybe they'd include a lot of grieving/mourning scenes for katsuki, give some real weight to the war and the stakes at hand, show that they have no choice but to grow up - but nah (wrote this like midway thru the video so i have no idea if they'e brought up later on lol). gosh, there are so many messy things about this series. I love it, still, but mostly because it's fun to think about rather than read now lol. This video obviously inspired a lot of thoughts in me so I just wanted to say that it was really well made and fun to watch. For the hour you gave me I actually felt like a proper MHA fan again talking about the manga instead of just watching everyone's disappointed and disinterested reactions. thank you so much for making this video
I really hate how much I agree with you. Though I love MHA and ended up really enjoying Villain Hunt somehow, its really where all the big fumbles started and hasn't felt the same since.

The irony is that if the story has remained consistent with its own model of storytelling and resolved its plot-threads organically, it would probably be over by now. YuYu Hakusho has always been the manga I compare other battle manga to, and what’s fascinating about it is that it wasn’t remotely as long as contemporary manga and resolved everything while still managing to allow a tremendous amount of breathing room and heart. Meanwhile, MHA became an exhausting, overlong mess that can’t get out of its own way.
This is honestly such a good video, not only did you show the problems but also brought solutions. Listening to you turned out to be both helpful and entertaining, and I'm glad I decided to watch it whole
I feel like this is practically a retread of how People felt about Naruto’s Forth Great Ninja War Arc/Final Arc. And feeling something similar to the Kaguya twist overshadowing Mahira Uchiha twist just screams ruining the story.
i feel sad about villain hunt being like that because it had the potential to be one of my favorite arcs solely because i want dekus mental state finally addressed and preferably i want all might to be the one to do it. honestly i think villain arc could have been a little longer and a gradual progression it just felt like too fast i think this arc would work better if it was taken a little slower. plus the idea of deku having consequences would have been nice commit to the bit and give him prosthetic arms or something. it just sucks bc honestly even if deku is my fave in the series i wouldnt say he is the most interesting character in the series like i feel like he got fumbled a bit and an arc displaying his virtues into flaws should have been a good exploration but it was far too short and shoddily paced
I am reminded time and time again that one of Horikoshi's favorite manga was Naruto. At the end of Naruto, it was revealed that him and Sasuke where the reincarnations of some dudes who had been fighting their whole lives and they were brothers (I never bothered to remember their names, the plot point is stupid). Deku, is a vessel for OFA's younger brother AFO, meaning that, in the end, Horikoshi is pretty much making another family drama just like Kishimoto did. Dissapointed.
Not only that, basic most important characters are worse iterations of those from Naruto. Ever noticed Bakugo's and Deku's rivalry? It's basically the same thing as Naruto and Sasuke, down to how frustrated Sasuke became, seeing Naruto grow. Heck, Deku is basically Naruto, but without all of the struggles and payoffs Naruto went through. While Midoriya had to train to use OFA, it's NOTHING compared to having to learn how to live with the society rejecting you because of the power you have inside of you, then learning you need to learn how to use this power. Deku has been given a blessing, while Naruto has been introduced with a curse - a curse that through hard work, he'd forge into a blessing himself. Seeing Naruto using Nine Tailed cloak for the first time was awesome, because he had to spend time training for it, while being essentially locked up and watched. Deku just sorta happened to be able to use OFA at basically 100%, which is handwaved in the chapter he says so to All Might. You'd think there would be a grand reveal and celebration whenever he'd reach 100%, but no - it just happens in the Vigilante arc. And that's just the tip of the iceberg honestly. I've never been into MHA too much, it's a good, brainless fun for me since the very beginning (despite having potential I could see), but nothing more. Yet I am still disappointed.
@@belle3679 And that's why its fanfic community is so proactive and theres so many au's and "what if" stories, even crossovers as well. It's just such a good base for writing, it's a concept with a solid enough ground.

Instead of creating some y/n stories in my head though I am creating the story further. Mostly I like to merge mha universe with other Plots, also use Inspirations from other animes. For example my favourite mha merge Plots are with AVATAR last Airbender - whereas there exist 2 kinds of people in the mha universe - The ones that developed quirks bc of Mutation AND having an ancient population of Element- benders on earth. There are conspiracies whereas a powerful lobby of people did a genocide of the ancient and natural Element benders, only to leave the quirks users on earth, demolishing the Avatar state and such. But this Information is deep underground, none of the normal people even have a clue what happened and these ancient Element benders people even exist. For better or worse There are people in U.A. even, that get to know this Info and learn that they do in fact Belang to this ancient nation. Some of them get actually invited to the "secret" Element bedingt school, where they travel to train There. This ancient knowledge school is basically hogwarts inspired - where the 4 houses instead are - air, water, fire and eart tribes. There one of them suddenly realized that he/she has the Power of the Avatar, which was assumed to be dead for 10 years. So after learning their own abilities and through vigorous Training and spy Missions they finally Exposé the rich powerful and evil Corporation that wanted to take over the world by abolishing the ancient "real" people with the quirk people. The truth is, that all the quirk people in reality are the result of Experiments from a sus EXTRATERRESTRIAL Tribe that wanted to colonize the earth by allowing them to develop powers just like quirks among other things. The evil aliens plan was to draw the attention from much more sinsiter things that they do on eart by allowing them a whole hero/villain System in the mha Worldbuilding. Yeah and bc some pupils from 1 a and 1 b class that deviated and went to the Element school afterwards got together again with the u.a. school and Students, they made an alliance and went to explore and Exposethe truth about the world, fight the world governments and stuff. In between there are ofcourse also character developments of each mha character, there are actual romances and couples that don't leave us blue balled . Yeah that's one of the examples of my "fanfics" - it's rather a shonen/seinen continuation/ development of the worldbuilding without the frustration of your usual anime tropes and totally unsatisfying romances/ finale of the story
AFO represents what MHA is now: Some lines here and there that you find funny or cool at the cost of years and years of build up. Nice video, Ocean man. Glad that there is some people out there sharing similar thoughts to mine.
god i remember how massively let down i was when it was revealed that dabi knew hawk's real name because......he asked his mum??? how the hell did he think that far ahead for something as trivial as a name (ironic for me to say considering mr todoroki touya over here but you get what i mean). maybe it was partially my fault for being so invested in the theory that dabi and hawks went to the same secret hero training programme (all the fanart from that was amazing as well) but could you blame me and the rest of the fans for expecting something like that from the guy who had built up the dabi reveal for years? it was in a way the successor to the dabi is a todoroki theory after that was confirmed except it fell flat on its face.
Stopped caring about the series when it was clear that there was no real plan for it's development. Author just goes with whatever tickles his shmuck in the moment and fuck the consequences.
Came back to this video after a month and one thing that I feel has been pretty understated is your music choices throughout the video, especially the transition at the final section with the "Odd Future" title card, just immaculate editing that perfectly gave off the vibes you intended, truly well done
As someone who really enjoyed AFO's character, I truly do find it a shame to see how he's quickly become the absolute worst part of the entire series. Right up until the point when there were suddenly 2 AFO's, his character was solid and he served as perfect thematic counterpart to All Might, but now every time he appears he just retcons himself (and Dr. Garaki) more and more and now he's nothing but an incoherent mess; a pure joke of a character that isn't even intended to be taken seriously (by readers or the characters). Absolutely amazing video Oceaniz, I can't wait to see what your future content.
I've felt since shigarakis awakening (with some significant exceptions) that everything has been really rushed. It had to be because of the introduction of the power of shigaraki, you couldn't have him sit on his hands for a bit while we have a school focused arc. It needed to reach the end but it still had too much to do
My favorite quirk in the franchise is Koichi's quirk "slide and glide". It started off kinda lame and became one of the best out there with some ingenuity. I wholeheartedly believe that Koichi's quirk should have been Midoriya's as it would have made alot of things better in my opinion. And I understand the whole "Midoriya didn't have a quirk at first, that's the point", But we haven't seen ANYONE ELSE in the series without one. All MIGHT doesn't count since we are only TOLD and SEE him with the MOST POWERFUL one. I like Shigaraki's new and improved quirk with his augmented body WAY more than I like AFO, as both it and OFA(AVATAR STATE) fell off in my opinion.
@@ashflake5318 I would agree but Deku was born without a quirk even though at LEAST one of parents had one... possibly both as we don't ever hear anything about being quirkless being hereditary(something they would have brought up at least once). Plus Deku says that more and more people started to gain quirks over time cuz only a few had quirks at first before the amount grew larger, meaning that with current affairs as well as the info I added up top... I would be hard pressed to believe you unless the creator said so himself.
I think I heard something about how the authors mental health needed to be taken care of by himself, I don't know if thats the reason, I can understand if hes working hard for a series that gain popularity, and it affects his health, I just think its fine for him to take breaks if needed and still keep up the work without ruining the story, because I wonder if he was disappointed in having to giving the animators the true ending of MHA for the second movie and had to come up with another arc series to come up with another ending to truly end the series.
i'm glad this video just confirmed i am not going crazy. i agree with every point made because these are points i also made before on why bnha went downhill. i especially love how it addresses the issue with afo coming back. i've been saying afo might've single-handedly ruined bnha ... kind of ironic, a little meta that the biggest evil in the story destroyed the story itself, really. i cannot accept what happened to shigaraki and i will naively keep hoping that in the end it somehow pays off and he annihilates afo. what i truly do not hope for is for shigaraki's entire conclusion is to sit back and wait like a damsel in distress for deku to save him from the big bad afo. he didn't grow from who he was to who he became for his entire character to be watered down into becoming princess peach.
We see shigaraki become a beast by getting his masters Bodyguard to respect him and be handed an army by the man who tried to kill him, only to be robbed of all his feats by his predecessor. WHY! I would've found it better if they worked together, this time AFO teaching him how to rule once on top.
This arc reminds me of one from Gurren Lagann (spoilers) After Kamina's death, we see Simon break emotionally. He fights with no regard to his own life and spends the next few episodes in a deep depression. As Nia gets to know and tries to help him, Yoko warns her that if Simon doesn't snap himself out of it, it won't mean anything. I think that's what's missing from Deku's arc here. His internal conflict is solved externally, which makes it feel empty to me, at least

When you mentioned the Arc that broke MHA, I wondered if we had the same thought and I see I'm not the only who hated villain arc. I personally dropped the manga when his whole class went after Vigilante Deku, I just felt like it was becoming too lame and going the road of typical shounen crappy ending.
Nope. What made MHA special at the beginning was its heart as Deku's underdog story. Back then everything beat of the story derived from and ultimately fed back into Deku's journey to become the greatest hero. Once the story stopped being about that, it was no longer building the narrative, but degrading it. That moment was when Mirio made his very first appearance. From that point on narrative momentum was no longer being put into the story, but being taken out of it. Anything else is basically just a question of _when_ a person first noticed that the story had strayed beyond the point of being what had made it great in the first place. With Mirio's perfection and greatness completely lamp-shading Deku, the core of the story is never really about him ever again. We're basically shown that All Might made a mistake in not giving OFA to Mirio, and told with a hand wave to just not worry about it.
Here's one thing I'll always defend the series for, one it was never an underdog story, the series literally opens with Deku saying not all men are not created equal and the first chapter ends with Deku saying this is the story of how I became the world's greatest hero. Not to mention All Might says pretty early on that OFA is an immensely powerful ability and that Deku's destiny is to face off with AFO.
@@mikemorro140 You seem confused about what an underdog story actually is. It's exactly what you just described btw; going from the very bottom to the very top in most cases.
@@phatpat63 Underdog means all the odds are stacked against you and there's little chance of you coming out on top but from a lot of hard work you do. A lot of shounen go for this but then by the end establish that the MC was always special and had a lot of things going for them. One of the things I liked about MHA, is they kind of just get rid of that idea early by not only saying Deku will be the world's greatest hero but it's also explained that OFA is an immensely powerful ability and he has a greater destiny with it. Even Overhaul's arc is about whether he's worthy of such a great gift and the answer is that there are actually other people like Mirio who is more of an underdog and could've gotten it.
@@mikemorro140 The hard work for Deku is to learn to control this immense gift, and the weight of it tearing him apart. That's what makes him an underdog and an interesting pov to follow. The consequences of going from no quirks to having to deal with personal + societal ramifications of getting OfA in an unequal society. The themes here are much more interesting, mature and complex than most Shounens are willing to deal with. But my god did the story drop the ball and just like naruto grossed over what makes it so good in earlier days...
@@justalostlocal Except Deku already was able to use OFA by the Stain Arc which wasn't even a hundred chapters in and again the whole point was though he had to train it Deku still got a very powerful ability, it's not like Naruto where they present Kurama as a burden to him. Not to mention they still do actually dig into the personal ramification of having OFA, again the point of the Overhaul arc is for Deku to see there was someone else worthy of it and as much as Oceaniz is complaining about it the vigilante arc was Deku pushing himself to the brink because he felt as the holder of OFA it was his responsibility alone to keep the peace on and stop AFO
Absolutely great video. I always love how you articulate your feelings to this series (and I love the edited footage) I feel bad that a series I grew loving will end up having rushing some of the most interesting plot lines I've seen in a while. I'm hoping Hori hadn't fallen out of love with the series.
Hey all, stopping by from the future Fall 2023. Basically jackshit has happened since this video was released. The final battle has dragged on for more than a year. All of the problems outlined in this video have only gotten worse.
I feel like Star's death should have been what finally pushed All Might over the edge into forcing Deku to accept that suicidally throwing yourself at an enemy solves nothing. Like All Might was almost there, but thinks the other students solved that issue so he becomes complacent. Then Star dies and Deku still talks about throwing himself suicidally at Shigaraki and that's where All Might finally breaks down and just berates and lectures and does everything in his power to force that idea out of Deku's head as even the slightest possibility. Then I think she could have actually had more relevance. Not that it excuses her being brought in and then immediately killed.
I fell off the fan train as soon as it began to go down hill. You could feel it mid villain hunt. I just didn't see what I wanted from the social commentary. I fell out of the fandom, and then got into genshin. I have no intentions on finishing this series. It just... isn't worth it anymore. A shame. The Boys gave me what I wanted commentary-wise from this concept better than I think BNHA could give me, anyways

Hi oceaniz! I just finished the video, as someone who's been watching all this go down from afar, all this it was super insightful. Incredible video, thank you and keep it up!
The timeline is way too crammed in. It should never have been just one year, the amounts growth they’ve had would be much more satisfying if this played out over the course of the 3 years they are supposed to be training to be heroes rather than having a terrorist attic every 2 or 3 weeks and giving them power boosts that yes, they worked for, but should have taken much longer even under such extreme pressure. It would give more narrative room to build up to a better climax, instead of having this really wonky pacing. Shigaraki should have killed off and replaced AFO. AFO is all might’s parallel, shiggy is deku’s parallel. Let it be that way. Don’t keep forcing AFO into everything when he should have been irrelevant for such a long time now. If the super important backstory of Aizawa, present mic, and kurogiri was going to be hidden away in vigilantes, reference vigilantes more in the main seres. Have characters show up, have events from vigilantes hold weight here. There’s a lot of major problems, but a lot of it comes down to bad pacing and probably down to horikoshi working too hard without enough time to properly think his story through and getting burnt out and rushing to the ending in the past few months.
I think what happened was he caved. He always had anxiety and then everyone started hating on mha and harassing and he grew to hate the story and just wanted to end it
I find it weird how deku sort of changed through the series, i think the one thing that I liked about deku is that despite his heroism he had a personality other than all might fan, what i mean is he has Alot of character that I thought would make being a hero very very hard, quirk or not, he's only had this power for a year, but lets be real, shigaraki is not a train for a year to beat threat, why is deku so comfortable with fighting so many people that can kill him? When we met him I thought instead of being the greatest because of the power to be he'd actually use his knowledge of all the heroes to sort of one up them all, while not having a complete mastery over one for all like all might did
As an average shonen n chill viewer, I always like to see your view on the chapters. AFO being a quirk-crazed, boomer who can’t differentiate between basic motor functions and a quirk is hilarious. It’s sad that your version of AFO is more entertaining than the one we have in the story right now. I really really hope the anime can correct most of the little mistakes that were listed because THERES SO MANY LITTLE MISTAKES. Edit: now that hori has a new editor, I hope the story finds a good pacing like is used to have.
No you guys, this is obviously intentional and very genius. He’s a very big fan of comic books so the declining quality of his manga is obviously a metaphor on the declining quality of the superhero genre as a whole
EDIT: I want to say it clearly - I specifically avoided speculating on Horikoshis health and the involvement of his editors because while some signs are there, we simply don't know anything yet. You are free to discuss it obviously, but in a video like this, which can easily and quickly spread its information, I didnt want to accidentally propagate false or incomplete assumptions about real people. This is about the observable, structural changes and tendencies of the media product, not about judging and analyzing the people behind it. It is a willful omission on my part.

I will say that I disagree with many of you points so instead of just leaving a comment. I will make a video rebutting some of you points. I probably will use parts of this video if that’s okay with you.
I feel like the only way for SOME of theses issues to be fixed is through the anime. I hope that when the anime adapts the later parts of the story, bones is able to change some of the plot. Not by much, but make it better than what we got in the manga. Or even better they can add in some filler episodes to add on to the story and add in new plot points that weren't in the manga.
I mean, there are plenty of reasons to not be a weekly mangaka

The fact that this entire series takes in place in one year of the students school highlights how badly Horikoshi paces the story. By now, Class A should be seniors and it would show that they're finally ready to become heroes. Instead of freshman who just keep getting lucky or sporadically power boosted

Izuku and Bakugo start the serious off in their last year of middle school and are stated to be 14 year olds. Currently Izuku is 16 going on 17 while Bakugo is 17.

Seconded. The story should be paced like Harry Potter - we see the characters grow physically, mentally, and emotionally with each year, culminating in the final school year being the final arc. Had Hori went with this route, it would utterly avert the need for a timeskip because we see 1A and 1B grow.
Instead, he wrote himself into a corner by making 1A being the entire center and having arcs resolved very rapidly while not giving us not much time to feel the aftermath.
I think the largest problem the show and maybe even shonen at large is their inability to go through with serious consequence and that just gets worse as mha continues. Once u start bringing dead characters back it’s the point of no return

I always think back to Full metal alchemist whenever I see this happened.
Nina happened at the very start of that series. (All versions/manga) Same with the failed attempt to revive their mother.
Both are traumatic events that stick with the characters. When the brothers comment about not being able to save even a little girl. Literally months after it would of happened. You feel the impact that had on them.
When Al questions his reality, you feel Ed anger as we know what he went through to save Al.
Hell the title “‘full metal” alchemist’ is literally titled after the title (take a shot when I type title) Ed gets since he lost limbs at the start and got metal prosthetics.
There much more that happens and continues to impact the plot later one. The rebellion you see in the first few episodes come back towards the end.
But there aren’t many shows I can think of that do this as well. Avatar the last air bender is the only other one I can think of.

Exactly. I honestly think Bleach was ahead of it’s time, since people actually stayed dead and there was consequences that actually occurred in the series. If C46 actually did something about Kikyo’s death, Tosen never would’ve rebelled. If Yamamoto actually killed Yhwach during the first war, he never would’ve came back. Hell, the Hell arc is a perfect example. The Shinigami has sent people down to Hell repeatedly, and without Aizen and Yhwach, the balance of the universe is now beginning to collapse.

I was kinda hoping we'd get Class 1A going from Year 1 students all the way to Year 3, mastering their powers and getting a lot of character growth and development while the villains slowly attain power and become a legitmate threat, and just take out the pro heroes slowly while the students improve. Certainly would've made the final battle more interesting with everyone at their peak against the villains at their peak with the stakes escalated with almost all the pro heroes getting killed or taken out.

@@dragoncat5767 I don't think this is fans and more executives breathing on creators necks to produce stuff without any pause and trying to follow an already made path, what makes any creative work sucks by a lot, and let's not forget the magakas have zero control on their stories many times being telled to change characters because "X is more popular than Y" and like the structure of MHA feels incredible artificial and paint by the numbers, and I doubt this isn't a sigh of the creator being too tired to even think what he should do next so they just copy what already worked from other series, these stories should have a pause of at least some months so the creator can recharge not only physically but mentally and have new experiences they can put in their stories.
I mean I think even the timing of the war would have been fine if we gave it some room to breathe, and gave the students time to finish the school, it would narritively satisfy the idea that the old system is failing ang only those who fully became heroes in the darkest hour can fix it

By the way, I cannot BELIEVE we skipped over the students reaction and “recovery period” after the war arc. We NEEDED to have a bit of time with the students together or something. Or hell! Midnights funeral! God damn man.
Oh yeah, my biggest issue with bnha is the fact how they put aside traumas and such, like with everything that happened I'm surprised that no one got therapy or dropped 1-A after feeling the danger for real.

It confuses me how so many people will complain about the license exam arc cause "why do we care about these story details when there is a clear and present villain threat" basically asking for a time skip and then they actually go through with a short time skip and just as many people complain that the story details everyone bitched about wasting time with are now being skipped over.
I think the story and pacing are doing just fine. I think too many people have been complaining about every narrative choice MHA makes or could have made and that no matter what choices they make they are going to get a vocal backlash for it. Tempering my expectations for the story with that knowledge has let me enjoy the story for what and why it is.
I remember the memes that were immediatly after the war arc were like:hahaha. Mha therapy. And thise aged badly as the average 2000's comedy movie

No one's gonna mention the one-shot he made before MHA? It's basically the same premise (no-quirk guy wants to be a hero in a hero society), but the main character never gets a quirk. He works together with others to be just as useful as other people in society and its a really touching and fun story that highlights how disability makes you no less ambitious and no less of a person.
I feel like MHA held this theme early on and came close to expanding on it, but lost its way and became a generic super-hero comic.
I kinda feel weirded out when I first started this series, Deku is part of this oppressed group that get get bullied cuz they're different and I thought the series was gonna go for one of those "don't need powers to be a hero" stories but he gets one and the whole quirkless thing with the show just...evaporates? Like the quirkless still exist but the whole shtick is just brushed under the rug. I hated it cuz it enforces the fact that the quirkless really can't be anything without a power message that was drilled to Deku but then later the show does a 180 when it showed that support items could out right beat quirks during the tournament arc. There's also the fact that most in Class-A students are pretty much under-leveled compared to Deku cuz if they wanted to make him an underdog guy who needs to catch up to his peers with his given power, they should've made his classmates be prodigies who leaves him in the dust, cuz not even a few chapters later he already dogpiles lot of them despite just receiving his quirk that it didn't even look like a challenge for him.
What I hate is Deku is just like All Might. He ignores the Depressed and Suicidal. There was a Deadpool comic where he rescues a Girl from committing suicide and it was really good. Couldn’t even have Deku meet a Quirkless.
He faced Real discrimination and yet when he got Power. He abandoned his fellow men and woman.
He knows how hard it is for Quirkless Kids yet because he has a Quirk and is a Superhero he forgets about them and let’s them wallows in Depression and Suicide and dosent care.
And thus he can’t Ever be a Superhero because he actively ignores the most Suicidal.

For one he himself was quirkless and likely knew the discrimination Deku faces and how damaging it is to say to a kid who obviously worships you. The there is also the fact that All-Might could actually help him since we have been shown in the show, support items can beat quirks in this world, and who is All-Might connected to? The Shields...so yeah both of Deku and All-Might sucked and reinforced the belief that having no power means you are useless.

Pulling a HxH a few years ago would've been the move. I know most people would complain about it but I genuinely think the end of the war arc should've been when he went on hiatus to get recuperated.

With how Japan's media industry is. That's not an option.
There was a solution to the All For One problem that was so obvious that it immediately raised red flags to me when the story didn't do it at Tartaros: Shigaraki killing All For One.
Were this to happen, it certainly wouldn't solve every problem, but it would provide a semi-coherent compromise between maintaining the element of All For One not wanting to give up his place in the world and letting Shiggy maintain his agency. Had this happened, several important things would have been different:
1. All For One's relationship with Shiggy would have been strategically made parallel to All Might and Deku's. While All Might accepted that his time was past and worked to let Deku take on the mantle, All For One held on past his prime for so long that it killed him. Shiggy exacts his agency and kills his master, completing his journey to becoming the series big bad.
2. Saving Tenko is neither predicated on beating up All For One nor the only possible end. It's suddenly up in the air whether that could happen at all, and if Deku does decide to do it, it becomes a lot more complex of a problem to solve. It would have to involve confronting the inherent issues with the hero system and society at large now that the BBEG is not around to be the scapegoat anymore.
3. The League's character traits continue to be front and center. Spinner, Dabi, and Toga have more or less been sidelined since All For One reentered the story, so giving them real character motivations for the last two arcs would have been a lot easier. Not only that, but Shigaraki would have had to deal with the fallout of each of them having different goals and the consequences of letting his companions do whatever they want.
4. As the UA traitor, Aoyama's position becomes a lot more complicated. All For One is no longer hanging over him, so now the only thing keeping him from telling his secret is his own conscience. This would make his role in the story more personal and satisfying.
This act wouldn't solve the problems with pacing and Deku's characterization, but it would make the stakes of the final war a lot more interesting, to the point where I was shocked when it didn't happen and genuinely believed it still would until recently.
This is exactly right, and it would make the traitor arc all the more fitting as well. The traitor story vanished because, Aoyama had nobody to report to. He was a spy without a handler; only held down by his own shame.
At this point someone would have to make a fanfic AU about that happening now.
@@downix I’m personally sad we never got a Kurogiri reunion with Shiggy and AFO, yeah he’s compromised after the reveal that he’s Oboro and Aizawa’s old friend but we still knew him as Kurogiri long before he was revealed to be Oboro so it kind of sucks we didn’t get that reunion in Tartarus. Even if it’s to ditch him since he’s compromised.
I'd freaking Loved that Idea!! If Shigaraki broke into Tartarus , gathers up the escape prisoners into his and meets his Sensei one last time before dusting him with Decay. AFO’s final moments being laughing insanity knowing he’s created a true Demon Lord with nothing holding him back anymore.
This Shigaraki growth parallels with Deku’s growth with their powers reaching new levels but now they both have to start over in a new playing field.
You could even have all for one as threat around via his quirk and talking to him and whispering to him. But one less body to take care of and challeng for shigaraki, that it truely could e a battle of wills going one, not afo taking over.
And the ones dont accepting shiggy and the ones who do and ensuring chaos could even e a reason to strik fast. as long as he isnt solidified.
I do agree that they really glossed over details in the villain hunt. Like we never even got real reactions from Enji on what his thoughts were with OFA. He's just moved past and works to help Izuku.
I feel as if it would have added nothing to his character. By the time OFA is revealed, endeavor was already over his obsession with All Might and power.
@@mangamandrew true. But the bigger one skipped is the downward spiral and exhaustion Izuku burns himself into. Let alone the other heroes. Like we see him taking down Muscular, but he looked tired before then.
@@jfb173jb It’s not that it was skipped. We see the spiral and it was fast. A downward spiral is not always slow. And for a character like Deku, the spiral can’t be slow. When he took down Muscular, he was not really tiered. That was the start of him leaving Japan.
And the other heroes are exhausted but Deku pushed past his exhaustion and that was the issue.

AFO: “Alright Doctor, now that Tomura has become and independent leader who thinks for himself, has proven himself to Gigantomachia, and assembled his own villain organization, we can at long last enact my plan to have an entirely separate copy of my memories take control of Tomura’s body so that it can use his hatred to steal OFA so that this other me will at long last be strong enough to defeat Star and Stripe and steal her quirk, allowing this other me to become the sole provider of oil, electricity, and other resources in Japan.”
Dr. Garaki: “… Master, I’m starting to think that losing the top half of you head might have possibly caused some minor brain damage.”
AFO: “What makes you say that?”

@@Dragonds53 true. All Might was taking like he was planning on killing All For One in their fight. Endeavor easily switched from prioritizing capturing to just killing the Nomu. The entire operation of a Paranormal Front war being to make sure Shigaraki stays dead. Etc. It seems like it's pretty accepted when you just have to kill certain people. Deku and Ochaco seem to be the only ones that have emphasis on not killing villians.

Same. I also hate how Hawks didn't get any sort of backlash for basically murdering an individual in cold blood. Like yeah, sure, Twice is a villain, but he's still a human being who needed help. There also isn't any law that stated heroes are allowed to kill in their universe. And Hawks is the No. 2 Hero and a famous public figure- I figured we'd get to see more mixed reactions from the public about him killing someone, particularly from the UA students.

Wow, after you pointed out how basically every chapter now is just a setup for another “epic moment” cliffhanger it’s impossible to unsee. Every. Single. Chapter. Is like this now. Also, the artstyle has become an undistinguished mess of shapes and faces, where there is no way of telling what is even happening.
This part is a huge aspect for me. Half of the time I just don’t even understand what is happening with shigaraki and his body parts lol. I just scroll through and hope someone will narrate it and I’ll get it
i get the feeling this is shounen jump's fault once again, rushing their artists to pump out something "safe" rather than experimental, at least thats what happened when we saw promised neverland. its kind of unrealistic for someone to continuously update a story on a constant basis with no break, hence hxh togashi takes years long breaks

When u discover that decay IS a modified version of overhaul things became even more dumber
Deku's power development also peaked way too fast.
Watching Deku slowly progressing through the percentages of one for all was a long but to be-satisfying journey. We all hoped to see him reach 100% with no repercussion, and that painted to be a part of the story that would take inside-years to master, and when he would finally get there, it would seem earned, both to Deku and to us by sticking all the way from 5 to 8 to 20 to 35.
During the first war when it was mentioned that Deku could use 35% and 45% at impact, it was a sign that the heroes wouldn't win the war but that also meant that we would've been in a while new ride with Deku until he gets to 100%, and little by little, the story of One for all would be fully revealed to Deku, giving him more mentality for battling.
But when fighting Lady Nagant, fa Jin came in and threw that out the window. It's a cool fight, sure, but fa Jin making Deku on par with all might already with faux 100% makes the journey underwhelming.
We spent hundreds of chapters watching Deku increase his percentages and got excited when he did because it meant something special for him and for us.
Having that suddenly replaced with something that has "faux" in the name is disappointing.
It's also frustrating that, fajin could've worked as a bonus for Deku, but that's the thing, a bonus, something for when after he's reached 100%
It's not an abismal problem, but it was something that made the series what it was.
Yeah I think speed is the problem. Of course Deku flexible the OFA muscle at higher numbers would strengthen that muscle. 5 to 45 makes sense given the events that pass, but not the time frame.
Kind of disagree? Fa Jin allowing Deku to do a fake 100% is pretty on point and in line with the rest of Deku's moves. Before he could control the % he would instead sacrifice fingers and limbs for "one time" (until healed, like how a gun needs to be reloaded) powerful shots- and when he did control his % he gradually stretched the muscle of OFA and proceeded to develop techniques based around the strengths and weaknesses such as using a lower % for attacks but increasing it far more just before impact-
Fa Jin, while suffers from the same issue as all the past OFA users's quirks do (introduced too quick, not enough practise shown, etc), is still very much in line with the story and Deku's mindset. He didn't have full control over it and instead applied it in an intelligent way (he basically had two boosts, one for each leg. One to leap at Nagant and another to blast forwards while using the whips to change his trajectory) and just like his early application of OFA it was limited (instead of fingers however he was limited to his legs and would need to remain static for a prolonged amount of time to recharge.)
Nobody complains about Mary sure male characters, they only get more respect because males are supposed to be strong. Females are supposed to be weak so any power they have that isn't long drawn out and realistically developed will be scrutinized regardless.

The fact that deku's arms were able to get adjusted to the strain from one for all really annoyed me. I thought horokoshi was going to follow through with deku not being able to use his arms anymore and would have to learn to use blackwhip to move his arms.
At the very least, Deku could have lost one of his arms but Hirokoshi could not even give us that! What a fucking waste

What? That's how One For All works. His body gets more used to it as he gets stronger, we're told this from the very beginning and it's why he had to train for like 10 months before getting the quirk.
We were also told if Deku pushes himself he would be a bloody cripple! Or did you forget that because Hirokoshi clearly forgot@!!
@@willycheez7218 ...No, we're told that he had to do that so that his limbs wouldn't fall off when he used One For All. It's been made clear through the whole series that Midoriya would lose his arms if he kept pushing his limits and that didn't happen.
It's not "how One For All works" that's just how it works for All Might since he's an Anomaly.
What I feel with MHA now is the same feeling I felt with Tokyo Revengers. Nothing.
I don't get excited for new chapters anymore, I don't care about these characters. It's just not fun to read anymore, man.

I personally dropped MHA after season 2 and I could not be happier. I am so glad I didn't get attached to Shigaraki because I would've been devastated to see that they just wrote him out of the story after he peaked

This reminds me of how I felt when Naruto’s quality started to decrease towards its end. It’s sad that MHA is doing the same and that Horikoshi just wants out when he finally made my hero’s world feel big. Wish he got a 3 month break like Tabata.

I'll never forget that one scene where Jiro got with all the others from the School Festival band, said something about bringing everyone together, and it's just....never followed up on. Would've been a brilliant catalyst for the Aoyama reveal too.
MHA’s problem is that it is rushing the War Arc consistently, with characters changing their minds on a dime (like Deku and his “lone wolf” idiocy), constant battles that fail to be impactful because they’re lined up one after the other with no proper intermissions of development or interactions between, and no given reasons as to why first year high school students are the ones making the biggest battles against the League of Villains.
AFO long overstaying his welcome and becoming like a vestige is also a serious swing-and-a-miss. OFA having vestiges makes sense because it is a stockpiling quirk. All For One, on the other hand, was simply (somehow copied, which is also never explained) into Shigaraki and somehow this allows AFO to hijack Shigaraki’s body? It makes no sense, really, and it kinda destroys the impact of Shigaraki’s character development over the course of the series. All of the moments of his growth and his direct parallels with Deku are now mulch since AFO is once again returning for a tired and exhausting story of how he’s just evil because he likes it and how he’s totally gonna get OFA this time. All of this, of course, with no emotional development or character connections to AFO as a character, or even a more involved backstory for him.
Legitimately the only way I can see this decision making sense is if AFO really IS Deku’s dad. And it would kinda be a sham revelation if they pulled that card so late in the game, too.
This series became the new Naruto Shippuden wayyyy too quick.
I don't like shiggy, not even they way we are supposed to dislike shiggy. I always hoped it would be AFO vs deku. Also lone deku was some of the best stuff in the story.

It just shows how much Deku hasn’t grow since the beginning, always recklessly running into problems without any thought and arrogantly (albeit unintentionally) thinking that he alone can solve the world’s problems and that such things are too dangerous for his classmates.
By now, Deku should know that his classmates are formidable and are growing just like he is. He should know that abandoning them would mean nothing, because AFO could’ve just targeted them anyway because Deku would be too heroic to not run to save them immediately.
Also, how would going it alone against a city and country full of escaped and empowered villains make Deku or anyone else any safer? He was legit endangering OFA by doing so, as he could’ve easily been killed when he was wandering the streets alone and without any backup.
Narratively, it makes no sense. It showed no growth in Deku’s character, it ended far too quickly and without much lasting effects to have any impact on the story, and Deku didn’t even lose anything from it (which might have justified it for teaching him a lesson).
Overall, it was a lazy attempt to satisfy those who love those Vigilante Deku fanfictions online. And, in a story where most of the other characters are either given zero individual or personal storylines and very little depth at all, it gave Deku’s classmates and teachers literally nothing to do in the story as he ran around playing hero. And it showed Deku’s greatest flaw in an unrestrained and obnoxious way: his selfishly selfless belief that he should protect everyone alone and that he needs to protect even his fellow heroes.
That whole arc, after the series having already shown how All Might made those mistakes and indirectly caused all of this by doing so, only showcased Horikoshi’s lack of creativity and his lack of continuity. And it succeeded in showing just how little Deku’s mistakes and trials throughout the series have actually helped him to grow.

The story unfolding in just one year? Please, like someone else in the comments already mentioned, class A should have been 3rd years at this point in the story.

As for Allmight? Leave him as he is, having to come to terms with the fact that he will never be the single symbol of peace and having to rely on others was a smart move.

We have a Quirk that could be used to perform miraculous healing, create new species, and build entire cities in the blink of an eye.
Overhaul should have been able to bring the Yakuza back single-handedly (hah), ruling over a criminal empire that rivals AFO’s with, or without, Eri.
I mean for Overhaul we only see him use it for reassembling eri, instant kill magne/minions, bringing back his arm, fusing with people and controlling to some extent the terrain. Overhaul was singularly focused on raising the Shie Hassaikai and not caring for the organization that he wouldn't have gotten far regardless of his power.
Many shows and series end up overstaying their welcome but MHA is the opposite. It's so determined to end that it's dropped so far in quality. Many of us probably would have loved to have seen several more years and see these characters grow up and evolve further. AFO is a big factor in this. Seems that the story has no idea how to continue after him which is sad really. Almost like they can't justify going more powerful than him
what annoys me is that like this could have become the next longstanding flagship series for shounen jump.
Like imo the way this story is and how like intricate it could be is that this could have been a next one piece although I dont see it going on for as long as One Piece has been/will go but like it had the potential to be especially with introducing the world outside of Japan.
Like I saw an article about how Shounen Jump will never have a a series like One Piece ever again and like I sort of agree with series that could come close either getting cancelled or in this case the suthor seeming to want to move on.
The edgy deku arc was such a good point for a fucking time skip man, they are all still in the 1st year of fucking school.
40:50 for this specifically, in the fight against Star and Stripe it switches between AFO and Tomura speaking several times. IIRC at the start of the new fight where the Hero's teleport Tomura's body away, it also momentarily switches between AFO and Tomura but it is mostly AFO in control. These things are not conveyed clearly in English, unfortunately.
Huh, neat. Other than that the only thing that really stuck out to me about their fusion was after his defeat, how AFO pointed out that his personal dislike of All Might mixed with Shigaraki's overall intense hatred as he uh, continuously seethed on the floor. Still find it neat, but it's kinda weird that at this point it's hard to get a total grasp on the main villain since stitching two characters together ironically makes you understand the end result less.
Wait now that I'm thinking about it, did he even point that out? Hmm, I remember him talking about how much he hates All Might at least, but, well, I guess that's there either way?
Gotta love watching this in 2024 when the story is still in its final arc and AFO was the root of Tenko's trauma.
Vigilante deku arc as people call it can be summed up as a kid leaves school fights sniper and goes back to school that is pretty much it.
i want to say, that AFO turning out to be a stereotypical villain and was planning to posses shigaraki, was the worst move possible.
i adored the idea that AFO had, over the course of his career, decided that he just diddnt have the drive to keep up his battle with OFA, that he hit his limit, and he was inevitably going to lose, just like every single villain in every single story. so why not try and take a page from those books? went out, found a successor of equal if not greater potential and will, and decided to build him up and hand him his power when he was ready for it, make them the new demon king, who will inevitably slay the hero that he has struggled against for so long. the villainous application of the old hero mentoring the successor, the passing of the torch. it was a legendary idea, and had so many genuinely interesting questions that we would have to ask about such a contradictory character.
and he pissed it all away. i don;t know why, but he did. that is a cold hard fact.
What an eye-opening video. Watching Shonen N' Chill week to week ever since the villain hunt, I see how yours, mine, and the community opinion as a whole was and is shaped by the reaction to individual chapters. How short run issues pile up in the long run, while hype moments fade and are forgotten. That's why the majority of the audience who reads the story just for the hype still loves it BECAUSE of the hype, which Hori now specifically made his target. This video made me more critical and worried for the future. To think that I'll soon be finishing MHA with "ugh, finally" rather than this the feeling that the journey has reached its destination, it just makes me sad.
With what I’ve been hearing about BNHA, these all really feel like symptoms from Horikoshi being pushed to finish the manga. This was touched on in several interviews with him wanting to end BNHA, because he’s been getting pressured to. Pressure from fans, critics, likely from his publishers and editors too.
I really think Horikoshi wanted to take his time with it, Hori clearly loves BNHA and is really passionate about his story, but deadlines are deadlines. And I think that’s ultimately the saddest thing about this.

I know your comment is a bit old by now, but I kinda doubt that. When a series gets axed, you can quite feel that; everything feels suddenly rushed and weird choices were made in that recent (final) arc. As for BnHA, you can feel the motivation in writing lacking overtime. More, as stated in the video too, like moving from cool moment to cool moment instead of actually developing these moments and its characters within it. I personally feel like Horikoshi kinda got burned out by the story of BnHA and wants to wrap it up in a decent way.

I 100% agree with everything said in this video. MHA got me back into anime after a period of not watching anything. I've been keeping up with this series week to week for a couple years now and it will always have a special place in my heart. The dip in quality the past 2 years has sucked, but don't think that will taint the enjoyment I've had with this series all these years.
That’s good to hear some people are being positive. I’m trying to be positive too since I consider BNHA my first “real” anime. I don’t like or want to give into the decline BNHA has had despite agreeing with admittedly a lot of the video’s points above, but I still will like BNHA for what it did introduce. The selling point for this anime in 2016 was the premise that although they live in a super powered society, there were people striving to become their best selves(Deku). The whole point of this was to show the struggles of the human heart in situations that normal humans don't go through. What is it like being super powerful and disconnected of your human emotions? What is it like being powerful and feeling empty/inferior?
I can't stress this enough: audiences are not interested in a super powerful being with no internal struggle. For example: One punch man (season 1 at least). He completely obliterates his enemies, but at what cost? HIs hair? His emotions? The thrills of battle? When Deku gets his new powers, it feels like he has new found responsabilities. Learning them without destroying his body, as it had been established previously. At one point he is shattering his bones and in the next: HAHA I CAN MOVE AT 100% 'CAUSE I'M EMO NOW. What???? It was just so he could be leveled up? that's annoyind as heeeell.
Deku no longer cares if he hurts his mother or not by destroying himself. (and then he can fight without repercussions). HIs relationship with all might is forgotten, he doesn't need to learn nothing more. His friends are side characters that don't matter shit in the protagonists life. No fight has consequences, not even Eraser Heads sacrifice (his leg) means enything, cause it is all SKIPPED so we can see omnipotent figures fighting.
I dropped the manga when they threw in a super powerful american hero who DIED FOR NOTHING.
What really makes sad about all of this is that we get a huge reveal centered around Hawks, who quickly became a very important character to the series, and its literally just one line. Then afo brought it up in one line only recently. Like, you're telling me Hawks has probably killed around the same amount of people as dabi and we're NOT going to talk about it? For real? Okay. It's just really disappointing especially since he's my favorite character and everything else about him is so well written but this is just dropped in there and never explored again.
I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. The Paranormal War Arc especially felt like it would be a turning point. For the Heroes, for society and especially for the Villains. I always felt that it should've been followed up by something much longer, that really dives into how broken Japan is right now. How the Heroes are coping with this new world where everyone doubts them. If what happened during the war was a step too far for some Villains, like Spinner or perhaps even Toga, and not at all what they had envisioned when they joined the League and they realize it's worsening the problems they hoped to solve by joining.
But then nope, we watch Deku run around for a bit and not getting anywhere because quintessential "friendship is great" shonen thing, Aoyama is the traitor, AFO and Dabi magically corrupt everyone so there's no more moral ambiguity, now on to the final fight! I will never like the Villain Hunt Arc, but if it was perhaps followed up by another few arcs that let us stew in the new status quo for a bit and wrap up all the emotional plotlines before getting to the big final fight, it certainly would've been more tolerable.
I really think Horikoshi is just burned out and just wants to get it done. Especially Bakugo's death really feels like an author deliberately self-sabotaging because he just wants to be rid of the series.

@@makoaatlas4782 I know, right? I mean, if you are going to kill off one of your leads, commit to it; go Kamina or go home. Don't use it as a cheap two-week shock only to then immediately undo it. I personally think the only way they could still make it work is 1. Edgeshot fails; Bakugo stays dead, 2. Bakugo is revived, but way too late to still make a difference or 3. We'd get an entire arc where Bakugo has to deal with the trauma of what he went through and the fact Edgeshot died for him to be revived.
And let's be honest, Horikoshi isn't going to do any of those.

MHA was a real iccuras moment. it just needed more time to develop everything, characters, themes, arcs, plot all of it. the worst of it all is that it really felt like it was all going somewhere but now it's official it's going to end this year.
But man a lot of MAH is still so good. it's gonna turn into a naruto now. It's legacy being defined by how it ended, not how it got there.

What I liked about MHA at the beginning was how One For All had its limits and Deku was seriously injured when using it, the scenes where he had to plan to use or not the OFA in some ways were great and with good tension because i didn't know if Izuku could outsmart the problems or take the risk and end up in a serious state that affects his next mission, but he went from being vulnerable to almost invincible, and worse that his improvements are off-panel, it lost the satisfaction of how he tried so hard but despite everything was not enough

S1&S2 are sooooooooooooooooooooo good. Those two back to back are goated. Even the first half of S3 is within that level of quality.
S1, S2, first half of S3, S4, were all so good. It drops in quality after that.

just imagine if we thought dekus arm was fine the whole arc until he was confronted by class 1A and when he took his suit off he did not have an arm the whole time. Thank you for so eloquently putting in words every single critique I have made about this manga/anime when MHA fans ask me why I don’t really care for this anime/manga in any sense and become insulted when I tell them I’m only keeping up with it out of curiosity where and how it will end. I’m legitimately curious if it will make any impact or if it will end in a cookie cutter way and fizzle out of existence.
Yeah. I was an avid reader until the TOURNAMENT ARC but everything fell out. It's not even about heroes anymore. It's like a constant cat and mouse chase.

I feel like the students fought each other more than they fought the villains lmao and it seems like this series wants desperately to prove the villains point about talking their way out of everything and not really solving any of their society’s issues. It’s super boring and you can’t even enjoy the action cause it’s always interrupted by some kind of flashback or talk no jutsu.
My interest in MHA gradually dropped the moment Overhaul got written out of the story at the end of his arc. In my opinion, Overhaul is the best antagonist introduced in the series and brought up to the surface very interesting questions regarding the world and quirk : the fact that quirk were a recent apparition and whether it's a genetic degeneracy or not, if quirk are a good thing or not in the first place, etc. Overhaul felt like so interesting because his point of view, that quirk were inherently a problem and had to be fixed, was valid and could be interpreted as right.
However, after being defeated, Horikoshi decided to have Shigaraki litterally shit on Overhaul for no reason other to remind us that he was the main antagonist as well as never bringing up those questions once more regarding quirks. And I've always interpeted that as Horikoshi having blown his load regarding the deepest part of the world building he could've explored as well as having introduced a more nuanced villain that Shigaraki. Because of that, I never had this moment again in the series where my expectation and understanding of the world was challenged and it came back to the fairly black and white concept of villain versus hero dichotomy.
After that, I just fell off gradually until I stopped around Endeavor fighting the Nomu.

There were way more moments that actually raised questions about MHA's society after the Overhaul arc.
One of them is the Gentle fight.
My favorite bit was where he stated how just because the product is making a point doesn't make the point good or effective.
this was an incredible video. As a longtime fan of MHA, I agreed fullheartedly with so many of your points. I was there, live, when Dabi's Dance came out, and I also remember vividly how the manga lost all that adrenaline and hype right after. I wish they lingered more on the recovery arc/saving deku. MHA, at its core, is also partially a slice of life, and ever since deku went vigilante that element has been missing more than ever. The whole class have been so separated/isolated, and that just doesn't work for the story. They should've had more time to comfort each other and talk things out.
Besides that, there are also a lot of ideas that got abandoned when Deku just magically started gaining quirks. Obviously, you mentioned that he lost all possible consequences for overworking/going too far. But, I also think that at the start the story was very much about learning to rely on people. All Might stepping down after kamino hit hard because he was the one and only symbol of peace. I really thought the manga would go for the "one for all" theme and show the strength in unity, have all the students work together to make up for deku's flaws, but no - he just?? copies their moves?? with his new quirks?? it downplays his classmates so disgustingly and urgh it's horrible
the traitor arc, too, I have no idea what happened with that? there were some really good theories out there about the potential traitor, but then in the story it just comes up once and is immediately??? idk???
Also, when Katsuki dies, everyone predicts right away that he wouldn't really die, but I actually legit thought his fake death would at least have more impact. Even though he was dead for a long time irl, in the story it's like. not even a day. I though, okay, they won't have time for midnight's funeral, but maybe they'd include a lot of grieving/mourning scenes for katsuki, give some real weight to the war and the stakes at hand, show that they have no choice but to grow up - but nah

gosh, there are so many messy things about this series. I love it, still, but mostly because it's fun to think about rather than read now lol. This video obviously inspired a lot of thoughts in me so I just wanted to say that it was really well made and fun to watch. For the hour you gave me I actually felt like a proper MHA fan again talking about the manga instead of just watching everyone's disappointed and disinterested reactions. thank you so much for making this video
I really hate how much I agree with you. Though I love MHA and ended up really enjoying Villain Hunt somehow, its really where all the big fumbles started and hasn't felt the same since.

The irony is that if the story has remained consistent with its own model of storytelling and resolved its plot-threads organically, it would probably be over by now. YuYu Hakusho has always been the manga I compare other battle manga to, and what’s fascinating about it is that it wasn’t remotely as long as contemporary manga and resolved everything while still managing to allow a tremendous amount of breathing room and heart. Meanwhile, MHA became an exhausting, overlong mess that can’t get out of its own way.
This is honestly such a good video, not only did you show the problems but also brought solutions. Listening to you turned out to be both helpful and entertaining, and I'm glad I decided to watch it whole

i feel sad about villain hunt being like that because it had the potential to be one of my favorite arcs solely because i want dekus mental state finally addressed and preferably i want all might to be the one to do it. honestly i think villain arc could have been a little longer and a gradual progression it just felt like too fast i think this arc would work better if it was taken a little slower. plus the idea of deku having consequences would have been nice commit to the bit and give him prosthetic arms or something. it just sucks bc honestly even if deku is my fave in the series i wouldnt say he is the most interesting character in the series like i feel like he got fumbled a bit and an arc displaying his virtues into flaws should have been a good exploration but it was far too short and shoddily paced
I am reminded time and time again that one of Horikoshi's favorite manga was Naruto. At the end of Naruto, it was revealed that him and Sasuke where the reincarnations of some dudes who had been fighting their whole lives and they were brothers (I never bothered to remember their names, the plot point is stupid). Deku, is a vessel for OFA's younger brother AFO, meaning that, in the end, Horikoshi is pretty much making another family drama just like Kishimoto did. Dissapointed.
Not only that, basic most important characters are worse iterations of those from Naruto. Ever noticed Bakugo's and Deku's rivalry? It's basically the same thing as Naruto and Sasuke, down to how frustrated Sasuke became, seeing Naruto grow.
Heck, Deku is basically Naruto, but without all of the struggles and payoffs Naruto went through. While Midoriya had to train to use OFA, it's NOTHING compared to having to learn how to live with the society rejecting you because of the power you have inside of you, then learning you need to learn how to use this power. Deku has been given a blessing, while Naruto has been introduced with a curse - a curse that through hard work, he'd forge into a blessing himself.
Seeing Naruto using Nine Tailed cloak for the first time was awesome, because he had to spend time training for it, while being essentially locked up and watched. Deku just sorta happened to be able to use OFA at basically 100%, which is handwaved in the chapter he says so to All Might. You'd think there would be a grand reveal and celebration whenever he'd reach 100%, but no - it just happens in the Vigilante arc.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg honestly. I've never been into MHA too much, it's a good, brainless fun for me since the very beginning (despite having potential I could see), but nothing more. Yet I am still disappointed.

For example my favourite mha merge Plots are with AVATAR last Airbender - whereas there exist 2 kinds of people in the mha universe - The ones that developed quirks bc of Mutation AND having an ancient population of Element- benders on earth.
There are conspiracies whereas a powerful lobby of people did a genocide of the ancient and natural Element benders, only to leave the quirks users on earth, demolishing the Avatar state and such.
But this Information is deep underground, none of the normal people even have a clue what happened and these ancient Element benders people even exist.
For better or worse There are people in U.A. even, that get to know this Info and learn that they do in fact Belang to this ancient nation. Some of them get actually invited to the "secret" Element bedingt school, where they travel to train There.
This ancient knowledge school is basically hogwarts inspired - where the 4 houses instead are - air, water, fire and eart tribes.
There one of them suddenly realized that he/she has the Power of the Avatar, which was assumed to be dead for 10 years. So after learning their own abilities and through vigorous Training and spy Missions they finally Exposé the rich powerful and evil Corporation that wanted to take over the world by abolishing the ancient "real" people with the quirk people. The truth is, that all the quirk people in reality are the result of Experiments from a sus EXTRATERRESTRIAL Tribe that wanted to colonize the earth by allowing them to develop powers just like quirks among other things. The evil aliens plan was to draw the attention from much more sinsiter things that they do on eart by allowing them a whole hero/villain System in the mha Worldbuilding.
Yeah and bc some pupils from 1 a and 1 b class that deviated and went to the Element school afterwards got together again with the u.a. school and Students, they made an alliance and went to explore and Exposethe truth about the world, fight the world governments and stuff. In between there are ofcourse also character developments of each mha character, there are actual romances and couples that don't leave us blue balled .
Yeah that's one of the examples of my "fanfics" - it's rather a shonen/seinen continuation/ development of the worldbuilding without the frustration of your usual anime tropes and totally unsatisfying romances/ finale of the story
AFO represents what MHA is now: Some lines here and there that you find funny or cool at the cost of years and years of build up.

god i remember how massively let down i was when it was revealed that dabi knew hawk's real name because......he asked his mum??? how the hell did he think that far ahead for something as trivial as a name (ironic for me to say considering mr todoroki touya over here but you get what i mean). maybe it was partially my fault for being so invested in the theory that dabi and hawks went to the same secret hero training programme (all the fanart from that was amazing as well) but could you blame me and the rest of the fans for expecting something like that from the guy who had built up the dabi reveal for years? it was in a way the successor to the dabi is a todoroki theory after that was confirmed except it fell flat on its face.
Stopped caring about the series when it was clear that there was no real plan for it's development. Author just goes with whatever tickles his shmuck in the moment and fuck the consequences.

Came back to this video after a month and one thing that I feel has been pretty understated is your music choices throughout the video, especially the transition at the final section with the "Odd Future" title card, just immaculate editing that perfectly gave off the vibes you intended, truly well done
As someone who really enjoyed AFO's character, I truly do find it a shame to see how he's quickly become the absolute worst part of the entire series. Right up until the point when there were suddenly 2 AFO's, his character was solid and he served as perfect thematic counterpart to All Might, but now every time he appears he just retcons himself (and Dr. Garaki) more and more and now he's nothing but an incoherent mess; a pure joke of a character that isn't even intended to be taken seriously (by readers or the characters).

I've felt since shigarakis awakening (with some significant exceptions) that everything has been really rushed. It had to be because of the introduction of the power of shigaraki, you couldn't have him sit on his hands for a bit while we have a school focused arc. It needed to reach the end but it still had too much to do

My favorite quirk in the franchise is Koichi's quirk "slide and glide". It started off kinda lame and became one of the best out there with some ingenuity. I wholeheartedly believe that Koichi's quirk should have been Midoriya's as it would have made alot of things better in my opinion.
And I understand the whole "Midoriya didn't have a quirk at first, that's the point", But we haven't seen ANYONE ELSE in the series without one. All MIGHT doesn't count since we are only TOLD and SEE him with the MOST POWERFUL one.
I like Shigaraki's new and improved quirk with his augmented body WAY more than I like AFO, as both it and OFA(AVATAR STATE) fell off in my opinion.
To be fair, having no quirk in Dekus generation is EXTREMELY rare. The farther you go up in age, the more likely there will be someone quirkless.

@@ashflake5318 I would agree but Deku was born without a quirk even though at LEAST one of parents had one... possibly both as we don't ever hear anything about being quirkless being hereditary(something they would have brought up at least once).
Plus Deku says that more and more people started to gain quirks over time cuz only a few had quirks at first before the amount grew larger, meaning that with current affairs as well as the info I added up top... I would be hard pressed to believe you unless the creator said so himself.

I think I heard something about how the authors mental health needed to be taken care of by himself, I don't know if thats the reason, I can understand if hes working hard for a series that gain popularity, and it affects his health, I just think its fine for him to take breaks if needed and still keep up the work without ruining the story, because I wonder if he was disappointed in having to giving the animators the true ending of MHA for the second movie and had to come up with another arc series to come up with another ending to truly end the series.
i'm glad this video just confirmed i am not going crazy. i agree with every point made because these are points i also made before on why bnha went downhill. i especially love how it addresses the issue with afo coming back. i've been saying afo might've single-handedly ruined bnha ... kind of ironic, a little meta that the biggest evil in the story destroyed the story itself, really. i cannot accept what happened to shigaraki and i will naively keep hoping that in the end it somehow pays off and he annihilates afo. what i truly do not hope for is for shigaraki's entire conclusion is to sit back and wait like a damsel in distress for deku to save him from the big bad afo. he didn't grow from who he was to who he became for his entire character to be watered down into becoming princess peach.

We see shigaraki become a beast by getting his masters Bodyguard to respect him and be handed an army by the man who tried to kill him, only to be robbed of all his feats by his predecessor. WHY! I would've found it better if they worked together, this time AFO teaching him how to rule once on top.

This arc reminds me of one from Gurren Lagann (spoilers)
After Kamina's death, we see Simon break emotionally. He fights with no regard to his own life and spends the next few episodes in a deep depression. As Nia gets to know and tries to help him, Yoko warns her that if Simon doesn't snap himself out of it, it won't mean anything. I think that's what's missing from Deku's arc here. His internal conflict is solved externally, which makes it feel empty to me, at least

When you mentioned the Arc that broke MHA, I wondered if we had the same thought and I see I'm not the only who hated villain arc. I personally dropped the manga when his whole class went after Vigilante Deku, I just felt like it was becoming too lame and going the road of typical shounen crappy ending.

Nope. What made MHA special at the beginning was its heart as Deku's underdog story. Back then everything beat of the story derived from and ultimately fed back into Deku's journey to become the greatest hero. Once the story stopped being about that, it was no longer building the narrative, but degrading it. That moment was when Mirio made his very first appearance. From that point on narrative momentum was no longer being put into the story, but being taken out of it. Anything else is basically just a question of _when_ a person first noticed that the story had strayed beyond the point of being what had made it great in the first place.
With Mirio's perfection and greatness completely lamp-shading Deku, the core of the story is never really about him ever again. We're basically shown that All Might made a mistake in not giving OFA to Mirio, and told with a hand wave to just not worry about it.
Here's one thing I'll always defend the series for, one it was never an underdog story, the series literally opens with Deku saying not all men are not created equal and the first chapter ends with Deku saying this is the story of how I became the world's greatest hero. Not to mention All Might says pretty early on that OFA is an immensely powerful ability and that Deku's destiny is to face off with AFO.

Underdog means all the odds are stacked against you and there's little chance of you coming out on top but from a lot of hard work you do. A lot of shounen go for this but then by the end establish that the MC was always special and had a lot of things going for them. One of the things I liked about MHA, is they kind of just get rid of that idea early by not only saying Deku will be the world's greatest hero but it's also explained that OFA is an immensely powerful ability and he has a greater destiny with it. Even Overhaul's arc is about whether he's worthy of such a great gift and the answer is that there are actually other people like Mirio who is more of an underdog and could've gotten it.
@@mikemorro140 The hard work for Deku is to learn to control this immense gift, and the weight of it tearing him apart. That's what makes him an underdog and an interesting pov to follow. The consequences of going from no quirks to having to deal with personal + societal ramifications of getting OfA in an unequal society. The themes here are much more interesting, mature and complex than most Shounens are willing to deal with.
But my god did the story drop the ball and just like naruto grossed over what makes it so good in earlier days...

Except Deku already was able to use OFA by the Stain Arc which wasn't even a hundred chapters in and again the whole point was though he had to train it Deku still got a very powerful ability, it's not like Naruto where they present Kurama as a burden to him. Not to mention they still do actually dig into the personal ramification of having OFA, again the point of the Overhaul arc is for Deku to see there was someone else worthy of it and as much as Oceaniz is complaining about it the vigilante arc was Deku pushing himself to the brink because he felt as the holder of OFA it was his responsibility alone to keep the peace on and stop AFO

I feel like Star's death should have been what finally pushed All Might over the edge into forcing Deku to accept that suicidally throwing yourself at an enemy solves nothing. Like All Might was almost there, but thinks the other students solved that issue so he becomes complacent. Then Star dies and Deku still talks about throwing himself suicidally at Shigaraki and that's where All Might finally breaks down and just berates and lectures and does everything in his power to force that idea out of Deku's head as even the slightest possibility. Then I think she could have actually had more relevance. Not that it excuses her being brought in and then immediately killed.
I fell off the fan train as soon as it began to go down hill. You could feel it mid villain hunt.
I just didn't see what I wanted from the social commentary. I fell out of the fandom, and then got into genshin.
I have no intentions on finishing this series. It just... isn't worth it anymore. A shame.

It’s scary how accurate this is with how I feel about mha recently. You worded everything perfectly. Great video
The timeline is way too crammed in. It should never have been just one year, the amounts growth they’ve had would be much more satisfying if this played out over the course of the 3 years they are supposed to be training to be heroes rather than having a terrorist attic every 2 or 3 weeks and giving them power boosts that yes, they worked for, but should have taken much longer even under such extreme pressure. It would give more narrative room to build up to a better climax, instead of having this really wonky pacing.
Shigaraki should have killed off and replaced AFO. AFO is all might’s parallel, shiggy is deku’s parallel. Let it be that way. Don’t keep forcing AFO into everything when he should have been irrelevant for such a long time now.
If the super important backstory of Aizawa, present mic, and kurogiri was going to be hidden away in vigilantes, reference vigilantes more in the main seres. Have characters show up, have events from vigilantes hold weight here.
There’s a lot of major problems, but a lot of it comes down to bad pacing and probably down to horikoshi working too hard without enough time to properly think his story through and getting burnt out and rushing to the ending in the past few months.

I find it weird how deku sort of changed through the series, i think the one thing that I liked about deku is that despite his heroism he had a personality other than all might fan, what i mean is he has Alot of character that I thought would make being a hero very very hard, quirk or not, he's only had this power for a year, but lets be real, shigaraki is not a train for a year to beat threat, why is deku so comfortable with fighting so many people that can kill him? When we met him I thought instead of being the greatest because of the power to be he'd actually use his knowledge of all the heroes to sort of one up them all, while not having a complete mastery over one for all like all might did

As an average shonen n chill viewer, I always like to see your view on the chapters. AFO being a quirk-crazed, boomer who can’t differentiate between basic motor functions and a quirk is hilarious. It’s sad that your version of AFO is more entertaining than the one we have in the story right now. I really really hope the anime can correct most of the little mistakes that were listed because THERES SO MANY LITTLE MISTAKES.
Edit: now that hori has a new editor, I hope the story finds a good pacing like is used to have.
