Everytime I watch something on the XY the gravity gets stronger. Glad I caught this! I’m a big field user but the XY seems to hold a missing link. I love Modular too, so I have sequencers and all of that, but the immediacy is what always gets me with TE. Great video👍🏼
I am currently in EXACTLY the same situation - I bought the XY, then made a video of the OP-1F as a final lap of victory and now I don’t think I can sell it…
I think the synths are very complimentary. There's nothing like Dimension on the OP XY, no straightforward subtractive synth. And there's nothing like the electric piano or organ on the OP1F.
What firmware are you on? I'm having trouble with the USB interaction. OPXY isn't sending MIDI nnote off to my OP1F over USB C. I really think they thought through using them both together. The XY is a little short on effects and sound design I think there's a lot of potential for using the XY as a sequencer and then recording onto the OP1F's tape with overdubs and track effects and so forth. But my transport sync and note_off commands are buggy.
I downloaded the latest firmware for both off the TE website before doing the video, but are you sure you have all your settings configured correctly? It took me a couple tries to get it right since the OP-XY has midi settings in at least two places - the overall system settings and the midi track
@@pocketspell Yeah, updated firmware and there's still a bug. If you change the midi settings, the OP1F isn't taking note in until you change the MIDI channel on both units. Kinda strange. Anyway, minor bug and hard to imagine it won't get sorted out eventually.
I was basically looking for any reason to sell my op-1F because I never used it and the workflow was NOT for me. I do find the op-1F more elegant than the XY tho, both ascetically and synth engine wise. It’s a bit frustrating because I find the op-xys workflow and overall UI to be much more my style but sound and visual aspects of the op-1F’s synth engines and samplers are so much better imo. I wish they would at a minimum add the dimensions synth to the XY. Prob will never happen tho.
@@PatrickTJohnson there’s a slight variation in the bass pattern due to the sequencer having been pressed between recording and playback but the reason it SOUNDS different is because of the tape reel style and effects and mix/master settings that happened to be on that OP-1 tape reel at the time, which is part of what’s fun about the combo
I think if they added proper sample chopping to the OPXY the OP1F could go. The tape could be easily replicated via another app or plugin. I definitely could use a midi controller for the Keys 🎹.
@@pocketspell I did! Finally just bought new and have loved it. I have the XY on order because I think the workflow will help me actually finish projects rather than just tinker with ideas but as a Canadian in the middle of a postal strike, local shops getting inventory will be a while yet :(
As a FIELD owner I was excited when I began hearing the examples of the OP-XY performances out there (there are crappy ones but there are some really good ones, as with anything). And I was in your same boat as to which I would prefer.. I do like the 16-step sequencer for quick creative basis (missing on FIELD). But the IDEA of these canned punch-in-effects notion ruins it for me a bit. They are a bit of candy that will I'm seeing get overused already - and they dominate the fascia of the unit. I love the organic nature of the FIELD tape and the synths; I think it's my preferred model and I cancelled my pre-order for an XY. But it's still intriguing.
@@Station2Station-du2gh I hear what you’re saying but will argue that punch-in fx can be sequenced very tastefully to help quickly do mutes, fills, etc. without sounding at all generic. Same with step components
@@pocketspell Possibly - but I'm hearing these "canned" effects in dozens of videos now - and I'm starting to tire of them even before ownership. They should add deep editing so you can customize the effect to taste. Right now I can pretty much "pre-hear" what the effect is going to sound like before the demonstrator taps it. Then the person taps it and I roll my eyes. Otherwise I like the other aspects machine.
That would’ve been cool. In some ways I feel like it’s still possible since XY is really a combination of OP-1 and OP-Z, and we have OP-1 OG and field, stands to reason there could exist both versions of the Z. The question then is would you still choose it over the XY?
@ From what I’ve seen, yes. The coolest things about the z besides immediacy and sequencing are the photomatic and motion features. The dmx lighting is cool too, I never used it though. The xy has none of that, and it’s less immediate.
Congrats you’re the first to comment here on it haha! It’s an actual op-z tattoo. Search “op-z tattoo” on Reddit to see me get absolutely pummeled in the comments
@pocketspell you're one step ahead of me brother, I've got both the Op1 field and the new opxy... And I'm eyeing that mixer... Great video thanks for sharing your experience
@ thank you! Yeah, the mixer is fantastic, I typically use all 12 (mono) tracks hooked up to my full synth rig, and it’s the only device available with a desktop footprint that can do so. Not to go full-GAS, but I also use the TP-7 to record the output of the TX-6, which I can later drag and drop into my daw to spit out 12 separate tracks!
Is this kind of collaboration possible between the op-z and the field? Like sequencing a synth from the op-1 on the op-z? Please tell me I don't have to buy the xy 😅🫶🏼
Yes you can absolutely use the op-z to sequence the field, route audio and do all kinds of fun tricks. What I like about the xy and field duo is that the sonic character is similar so it’s a nice combo if you’re using both as sound modules.

Keep these videos up man! Enjoying them!
Thanks man means a lot coming from the master!
Great stuff! I think in combination these two are fab! :)
I'm in the same spot, except I haven't bought the XY .. yet. I'm going to try to keep both. Great stuff!

Both devices are definitely a keeper. 🔥🔥
They are way to awesome together. the XY makes the Tapedeck totally shine.
Perfect partners, ying and yang
Yes, definitely discovering that to be the case! So many possibilities

Great, now I want to buy the xy again. Goddamnit.

I have had the same exact thoughts even though I don’t own any of the two
They’re specifically designed to work in partnership so no chance, but you can just weld the Fields engines into sequences with the midi
Why does the pattern sound different after you recorded on the OP-1? Cheers
