You guys really did a great job presenting it with much fun, esp with the “saxophone”, near the end. I had a huge laugh, and it also convinced me that this thing actually is worth buying. There is a lot of other gear that can do more for the same price, but this is hard to beat in terms of how much joy and simplicity it brings in a very small form factor, while still being able to crank out complete sounding pieces.
@pshearduk It's dope, but I can almost get a top-tier keyboard/workstation for that price. This is a designer beat machine. I'm enjoying my ableton move, though.
I do find it interesting how many comments here already mention it being a cheap plastic toy, when it's really a dense, aluminum enclosure, solid feeling device. It's definitely expensive, but it doesn't really make sense why so many people are losing their minds over it. Just move on if you think it's too expensive?
What do you expect? There are genuinely more people whose only interaction with TE products is complaining about TE products whenever one is released than there are actual TE customers. It’s insane. I’ve never seen anything like it with any other brand, except maybe Apple.
@ I like to remind people that my first pro-level trumpet was somewhere around $1500 in 22 years ago money. That same trumpet is $3400 now. All it does is make toots. There are plenty of guitars and basses that I want and will never buy. That doesn’t mean they’re too expensive, it means I’m not the market they’re selling to. If it was too expensive, it wouldn’t sell at all. People REALLY don’t seem to like the idea that someone is making something that’s not marketed to them, whether it’s cars or boats or instruments or computers or anything else.
I love Will. He was so great with the KO II roll out, and I am so happy to see him back with XY. One of the best company reps out there. Love my XY and this is exactly the video I was looking for to help me dive deeper. I must say I'm in love with mine. If you're willing to give it an actual chance, I think you'll find something very special.
Incredible amount of engineering and custom software work in a tiny and well made package. As someone who has owned nearly every other groove box out there, I challenge folks criticizing the price to watch this video in its entirety - it definitely helps rationalize it. Not saying there isn't incredible gear out there at a lower price point (Dirtywave M8 M:02 for one), but this thing is on a completely different level vs. other groove boxes.
An Akai Key 37 absolutely throttles this thing in any & every way. It's not quite like comparing an actual airplane to a paper airplane but it's about on par w/ comparing a remote control toy plane to a real 1. As an electronic repairman if u brought me both & had me match the price to the gear I'd certainly choose opposite. I've never, EVER guess this costs what it does if u had me take it apart & I didn't already know. I'd probably guess $200 bucks in 2025. When I repaired the 1st OP-1 I still remember saying it wasn't gonna be worth it because a new keyboard was going to be a $180. I genuinely thought tht was more than what the unit cost new. I was floored it was $800 12 years ago! If the software is tht inspirational & great more power 2u!
This video has confirmed my feelings for this device, it is absolutely worth it for me and my interests and I am definitely going to get one soon. You guys really killed it with this one!
They really do make Great music gear, I love my KO2 and pocket operators, and have used most of them since release day. The XY has just arrived at the perfect time for me.

The products themselves are brilliant but their humanity is what truly sells it for me.

Thank you very much Andertons and this guy from TE is a gem.
It just reminded me of the first time I got the OG OP-1. Pure excitement and instant creativity & joy from making music on the spot that so many times gets lost with modern equipment and only sometimes money can buy. Great to see another chapter in the already great book of the OP.
I think that Will from TE does an incredible job of conveying the concepts of the op-xy and also has he has created its documentation, he must be a very clever guy indeed. ** and I purchased it today 😊 **
Wow that was awesome!! Well worth the extended play what a beast of a box. Thanks for going so in depth on it. Jack + Oz crushed this, and Will pulled out an amazing track to show all these features off

1:19:11 "Just learn one chord, that's all you need. This does the rest. You're good." I'm impressed by the device, but that statement exemplifies the Teenage Engineering mindset that bothers so many. Much like Apple, they build in comfortable guardrails that guide users to do things Their Way, and even basic capabilities TE doesn't value are omitted. Example: the lack of undo on OP-1 and OP-1 Field. You can actually do undo by lifting before a take, then you can drop if you don't like what you added. But TE doesn't think you should undo, so they don't make it easy; forgetting to lift first prevents you from undoing. You can practically hear TE chiding you: "we told you the spirit of OP-1 is creative experimentation, not multiple takes. Limitations are freedom, limitations are creativity, limitations force the simplicity that leads to happiness." I like their hardware and own more than a little of it. It's fun, but I always feel they're much more interested in their vision than in my productivity. "That's cool" trumps "that's useful" in every design meeting. 1:21:44 Red means recording... where have I heard that before? Isn't it trademarked? ;)
All I want to know is if there is a sustain button? Or at the very least if external sustain buttons work like on an external keyboard that has a sustain button. That is one major thing I miss with the op-1 field which is annoying not having. Multi sampling is another huge thing missing on the op-1 field so was really hoping this may have both, looks like the multi sampler is there but not the sustain?
Watching so many videos about this since the launch; This and Will just sold it like no other. It’s such an amazing and capable product. So immediate and distraction free compared to a laptop which many compares it to pricewise #addtobasket
Vocal fry was making this a tough watch at the start...but then something happened and energy levels jumped...and it all becomes very clear...it’s certainly making the predictability, dullness and rigidity of step sequencing intriguingly fun for once. Had the OP-Z, was great but having to use a phone as a screen killed my excitement at the awesome sounds and creativity...but this does indeed make it better in almost every way. Brilliant demo irrespective of your take...and many of the features discussed were news to me despite watching a lot of others! Thanks both...I can hear the thuds of people falling off the fence thanks to this demo
So it's a modern portable goovebox with tons of connectivity. And super sounds. Pretty cool, price point is gonna keep it away from some of the groovebox crowd.

Oh man! So tempted. Id love to see a bounce to disk or some kind of song audio bounce function and streaming long samples from disk. Even without that though this thing is AMAZING!
turning both drum channels down as shown at 59:44 by holding the drum track buttons unfortunately also soloes them. meaining while reducing the volume of the drums, you ironically hear nothing but the drums getting quieter. would be nice to be able to opt out of muting by holding. because right now only one of the features makes sense: either mute by holding multiple or holding and level multiple with one knob

I've been a massive critic of TE in the past, and frankly I stand by all that I've said about them and their previous products. But this thing is different. I feel like they have finally made this one do enough really useful stuff to justify that price tag. It's still wild, but you can really write a piece of high quality music entirely on the go now, in a genuinely portable format. The only things that come close to this are trackers, and I just dont like that workflow. This thing looks like it will be as at home on a train journey as it would be in a studio. Fascinating stuff and fun results. This is exactly the sort of thing, though, that I'd rather watch someone else use than own myself. I just know I'd stare at it and be like.. what do I do with this 😂
I've been a massive critic of TE in the past, and frankly I stand by all that I've said about them and their previous products. And I've never been a critic of their aesthetics, and this doesnt disappoint there either.
GG Teenage Engineering, you finally snagged me lol 👍
I feel you on this. I keep hearing the M8 is a good alternative, but for me, I don't want to "program" music, such as a tracker workflow.
I love that they always have a microphone on the device to record vocals or guitar
"Can you brain Oz?"
If it can do then maybe £2k doesn't seem a bad price after all...
Not having the fun features of the op-z (I love motion, photomatic, etc) Is a bummer
This product if for people who drive Teslas, order Uber eats, wear an Apple Watch, owns a Peloton and believe *AI* is a positive thing!
