    I'm loving the racer x plus aftermarket bushing combo as well 👌 good stuff as always!

      Seems to be the consensus favorite among GR Corolla owners.

    So how has it performed? better than the iforged SS? I was going back and forth between the newer DC shifter bushings and this.

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel that the Racer X SS and spherical bearings are the best available. The spherical bearings allow the cable to rotate a little so it doesn't bind and giving a better shifter feel. I like the design of the Racer X SS more than the Forge but the Forge does give you the ability to adjust the throw. That being said I find the throw of the Racer X SS to be excellent.

    With the way you started installing the shifter plate to the cable head, you end up having to rotate it 180 deg from the original OEM position before anchoring it to the cable post; I did the same thing, but worried this might cause some issues with binding. Have you had any issues since the install?

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      None at all, that was more just to help make it easier to stack the pieces onto the shaft.

      @@fliposopher You should be fine. I've help several others install them too and done it the same way and every one of them is doing great.

    Hey Jim - Have you considered changing the GR Shift knob.
    I ask as I am not a fan of a knob covered with some sort of material. (in the GR or 993)
    Decisions would include
    - round or taller (cylindrical)
    - metal - plastic - textured
    - weighted or not

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question but not really. I actually like the shift knob that came with my GRC. I have big hands and it fit's my hand nicely. I'm not a fan of metal ones being cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Plastic is okay but looks cheap compared to the leather. I do like weighted knobs and this is weighted in comparison to the one that normally came with the Core. The only way that might change is if I was able to fell one that somebody had in their car and I loved it. I do have a round plastic covered CF TRD shift knob in my 2009 Corolla Turbo S that I really like so it just depends.
      Just out of curiosity? What made you ask me that?

      @@jimsgaragetoys I asked as I'm not a fan the leather covered shifter in my GRC Circuit - it is fine but I do no love it. I owned my 993 (for 10 years) with a leather covered knob - again - it was ok but I did not love it. I did however like the shifter in my 07 GT3 a bunch - It was round - weighted - metal top the rest was.tightly covered with alcantara. (It is hard to say exactly but my liking the GT3 knob may have been the beautiful rifle bolt tranny in that rig?) I also have no issue with my Fiesta ST cheap @$$ shifter .
      I posed the question to you cuz you appear to have your finger on the pulse (hence your channel & the research you likely do with all the modifications) and you may have more of a connection to other like minded drivers - which I do not!
      I'll be going to a local autocross next week end - to test my skills and check what other drivers run in their rigs.
      I also watch several YT video where they rave on how good XYZ shifter knob is.
      So I thought - I might enjoy the GR even more if I had a shifter that I liked since it is an important contact point...

      @@TerryManitoba I do agree that having a shifter you like can make a big difference. To be fair, I haven't tried a different one in my GRC but that's because I do like the one I have now. In my local GRC group nobody has really explored different shift knobs for me to see how they feel.

      @@jimsgaragetoys Fair enough...
      I figured since you've installed a short shifter a/w bushings & pitch mount (these mods invariably change the way the shifter feels in hand). I'm thinking the knob might be a natural progression of mod to consider?
      However - if you're good you're good👍

      @@TerryManitoba You're not wrong and on some of my other cars I have changed the shift knob as I had stated. I'm not against something different if I find something I like but since I haven't been looking. I did look at some shift knobs online but it's hard to know how a knob feels from a picture.

    Will this work on my 2020 Corolla SE six speed no hybrid

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Check with RacerX and email him to make sure. I know that the pitch mount works on the standard 6-speed manual Corolla E210 bit I'm not sure about the short shifter and bearings. I would guess that they may though.

    Ever since first seeing these bushings/bearings, I've wondered if they might benefit from a little grease. Partly for protection, partly to allow all those metal-on-metal interactions to have a little smoothness added to them. I reached out to Racer X last night, but I've not heard back from them yet. I may do it, just for shits n giggles, post the results on the grc forums.

      @@jimsgaragetoys Just got the email back from Jeff. It says, verbatim:
      "Lubricating the bushings would not be necessary, but if you chose to it wouldn’t hurt. I think you will be quite pleased with the performance once installed. My only area of concern would be the grease collecting dirt and debris which could cause the bearings to prematurely wear. "
      Which is a valid point. It would get pretty grimy there, floating in the engine bay. Far moreso than if it were hanging out on the shifter side of things, under a shift boot. Still, if regular maintenance of the grease on it were something one would be willing to do...

      @@jimsgaragetoys Figured I'd chime in, with Teflon spherical bearings it's a self cleaning joint. I too had reservations using them on my A80 re suspension, and wanted to use grease just on the top and bottoms to help keep grime and dust out, but the better of the options is to put a loose fabric dust boot wrapping the bearing and secured to the rod/assembly. the fabric needs to be something similar to the hydrophobic intake bags K&N sells. Alternatively, there are rubber boots, but hard to get good quality ones and even one that will fit this small shifter cable assembly properly.

  • @Ttamlin
    @Ttamlin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Also, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe there's supposed to be a cotter pin in that vertical post that runs through the bearing and top and bottom bits of the short-throw plates.

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I have one in there too. It was giving me fits trying to get it in but I finally managed. TBH though I don't think it would matter as there is no way for it to rise up and off the post with the bolts holding on that piece.
